The detectives have managed to keep Legatum Continuatum's secrets safe for more than a hundred years, but that could soon change. Amanda and her friends have discovered that the red spiders of Ambleside have a talent that could expose everything.
Unfortunately, Amanda's new stepfather knows about them too, and his plans are deadly. The kids try to get to the spiders first, but their attempt to save them just complicates matters. Then Amanda disappears and it falls to her friends to save the day. If they fail, she could die. The situation has never been more critical. The problem is that only one person knows how to find her, and they don't trust him.
Paula Berinstein is the author of the Amanda Lester, Detective middle-grade/YA series, which features a descendant of the Sherlock Holmes character Inspector Lestrade and is set in the English Lake District.
She is also the author of the Indigo (time travel) and The King's Alchemist (historical fantasy) series for adults.
From 2005 to 2012, Paula produced and hosted the popular podcast The Writing Show (http://www.writingshow.com). She holds degrees in English literature and librarianship from UCLA.
Paula Berinstein has captivated her fans again with the fifth book in her Amanda Lester series - "Amanda Lester and the Red Spider Rumpus". With the investigative skills and dogged determination of her ancestor, Scotland Yard Inspector G. Lestrade Amanda and her friends continue to protect the school's hidden archives while searching for the Detective 's Bible not only tracking the peacocks who appear to have discovered sheets from the elusive book, but deciphering the code on a page that leads to the red spiders at Ambleside whose bite can uncover any truth.
In a thrilling plot filled with twists and turns that make your head spin as startling surprises are revealed about Nick's past, Blixus downfall, and Banting Waltz's nefarious scheme, the action never stops. Intensity and suspense continually mount as the plot thickens with all the duplicity and scheming of Legatum Continuatum's growing number of enemies who are determined to destroy the school and bring down Headmaster Thrillkill. Amid all the chaos a love triangle blossoms as Amanda admits her love for Nick while trying to let love obsessed Scapulus Holmes down gently. Even Simon afraid of Ivy's rejection finally admits his feelings for her under the influence of a spider bite.
Paula Berinstein has a clever knack of building layers within the main plot not only igniting the story with emotion as Nick struggles to prove his worth and be re-admitted to the school but heightening the interest of teens and young adults alike with Amanda's kidnapping as he joins forces with Scapulus to rescue her. Yet at the heart of every story is the abiding friendship and loyalty of Amanda and her friends whose teamwork never fails to unravel a mystery.
With every new story the characters continue to develop, their strengths expanding with every challenge they face. Talented and resourceful Amanda Lester is smart and strong although impatient, feisty and bossy, weaknesses she struggles to overcome. In love with creative, intelligent, patient and tough Nick Wiffle (aka Moriarty) she shows a kind-hearted, caring and forgiving side to her nature especially as she tries to protect Scapulus from being hurt. Nick having discovered his true lineage is determined to change for the better becoming more and more selfless in his need to win trust, safeguard his relationship with Amanda and earn a place in the school. In contrast, darkness seems to be stealing into Scapulus's personality as his jealousy of Nick and regard for the Moriartys grows. These main characters and others continue to infuse every escapade with high energy, excitement and drama, and are vital in making the plot so enthralling that you can't put it down until the end.
I love the mystery and suspense of Amanda Lester's detective work enjoying each adventures as she and her friends bring justice to those who want to undermine the school and its teachers while dealing with the emotional roller-coaster of being a teen. Exciting and gripping with all its undercurrents I can't wait for the next book in the series.
This is the fifth book in the continuing story of Amanda Lester, descendant of Inspector Lestrade of Sherlock Holmes fame, and the student detectives in the secret school Legatum Continuatum.
The school has been divided by the instructors and the loss of the ancient "Detective's Bible" that has been missing. And now they also need to guard the school's secrets. Theories on how to do that are not met with 100% agreement. To make things worse, Amanda's mother is an instructor in the school and her fiance is a man whom Amanda doesn't trust. A meddling mother with whom Amanda doesn't see eye to eye is just what she doesn't need. Then Amanda and her friends discover that special red spiders in Ambleside have powers. If they get into the wrong hands all could be lost. But Amanda's stepfather-to-be is as evil as she feared and he knows about the spiders too. It's a mad dash to get to them first. Then Amanda disappears and with her life in danger her friends have more problems on their hands than they ever thought possible. And perhaps there's some teen love angst thrown in, just in case the story isn't exciting enough...and it is!
This series is best read in order. Every page of each book is filled with excitement. There's interesting new concepts and inventions to intrigue any reader. Ms. Berinstein has a winner with this amazing series!
Packed with twists and turns, and even more surprises, this 5th book in the Amanda Lester Detective series grabs from the first page and doesn't let go until the end.
Now, stuck with the school in hiding, Amanda and her friends run across a new threat: a secret which could destroy their entire detective world. The group of young detectives discovers that the Legatum Continuatum has existed much longer than they first expected. And that the secrets surrounding it run deeper than thought. When they discover that red spiders could disclose it all and the bad guys are on the verge of getting this information, Amanda and her friends are up against the clock to save them all.
This is my favorite middle grade series this year, so I was looking forward to see which mystery would hook in Amanda and her friends next. Amanda and her friends are growing (maturing), and this book reflects that. Although it's packed with adventure, more time is spent on the mystery itself in this book. There's a little more depth and history behind the Legatum Continuatum. Also the character relations are deepening as well. It's a slow coming-of-age in many ways as the characters approach the problems with a tiny bit more calmness and thought than before--but then, this isn't exactly their first, big mystery.
I love the way the book grabs tidbits from the previous mysteries and integrates them into the on-going tale. This isn't a series which can easily be broken down into stand-alones. The characters and story build on the past experiences, making it difficult to dive in somewhere in the middle.
Amanda is a character, which often discovers more about herself as she ingeniously battles through the mystery. She tends to be head-strong and spontaneous, which gets her into trouble. The weaving in of her family problems and the difficulties of balancing the very different personalities of her friends, brings the entire thing home. She's a very real girl in a crazy situation and handles things as best she can, but without her friends, she couldn't do it. There's even some romance going on--kept very cute and sweet--but as with all teens, this isn't a clear cut, smooth ride either.
But the most important thing about this is the mystery. And it's a good one. It's hard to see where the whole thing is headed, and the detectives run across exciting bumps and stumbles along the way. The slight addition of magic gives the story a nice touch of could be's and imagination, allowing the reader to keep hold on to the illogical even when it's logic which guides the detectives through the mysteries.
In other words, I can't wait to see where Amanda and her friends go next.
”An advanced review copy provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.” Truly a delicious and heart-warming mysterious story! “Amanda Lester & Red Spider Rumpus” book took my heart within the first minute I started to read it. Every chapter was absolutely mysterious, well-built, enjoyable and interesting to read. It was hard to take my eyes away from the book until I finished reading. Story plot was brilliant. I wonder how the author built-up all these matters, mysteries, characters, details (Such as details about Red Spiders…., etc) and the solutions. I like all the former characters and new characters introduced in the Red Spider Rumpus. There is only one thing I dislike in the story; Love Triangle between Amanda, Nick and Holmes. It made me somewhat annoying. I hope author will be resolving that bond between them in the next book. [Although I hate this Love Triangle, It made the story even more interesting and delicious to read.] Overall, this book was perfect, excellent and kind of a book that you couldn’t put it down until you finished the reading. Recommended for every reader who expecting to read most curious, adventurous and secretive book.

Amanda Lester and the Red Spider Rumpus is a fun book.
I received a free copy of the fifth book in the series in return for a fair review; OK, now that the niceties are out of the way, Amanda and friends are faced with a new set of challenges. They are trying to locate the detective bible and protect the school’s secret archives from being taken. The school uses a double system for its archives and the individual pieces of information need the meta-data to be understood. There are now several groups trying to destroy the school and problems abound. Amanda loves two boys and is still struggling to determine which one is right for her. The race is on to determine who took some of the archive’s content, how to determine who should be believed, and how to protect those she loves. In addition, the number of enemies of the school continues to increase and they are battling each other for control over the criminal world.
The book is a wonderful addition to the series and builds upon the information from previous books. I would recommend reading the books in order, as I did, and will note that I got the first four books on my own. I will also note that we get a bit more background of one of my favorite “ancestral” detectives from the series.
