Being raised among a race of half-breed Vampires and Lycans has been far from easy for Kira. VampLycans despise humans—and her mother’s human blood runs deep in Kira’s veins. Unable to shift, having few VampyLycan traits at all, Kira is denied acceptance from the clan…and the love of the man she’s wanted since childhood. A little girl’s crush that’s bloomed into a desire so strong, it threatens to consume her. Suffering the pain of Lorn someday finding a mate is not an option.
With their evil clan leader, Decker Filmore, currently on the run, it’s the perfect time for Kira to escape; to leave Alaska behind and attempt happiness elsewhere. Just one more day, and she’s gone for good.
Lorn has a difficult decision to make, one that will change not only his life, but the lives of everyone he knows. He’s been asked to take control of his clan. With Decker gone, the time for such a drastic power play is now. It’s a responsibility Lorn has never wanted—but the choice is made for him when Kira is unexpectedly attacked, changing her in a way that should mean her death. Now, he’ll do what it takes, kill whoever he has to, to keep her from being executed under clan law.
If he can defeat his enemies and gain leadership, Lorn will change all the rules for Kira—or die trying.
I had a rather short area here telling a little about me but then I had more than a few people ask me to expand it so... here goes. LOL. I'm a full time home 'supervisor' which is a nice word for saying I'm a housewife. I'm married happily, I met my dream guy 20 years ago, and we have 4 children. I live in Southern California and I can't function without iced coffee. I believe in romance, I've always been a daydreamer, and I'm a HUGE fan of books, always have been.
No, I didn't know that I always wanted to write. I inhaled books as a child. I read entire series (Pippi Longstocking, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, Trixie Beldon, The Borrowers, etc) in a matter of days at a time. By the time I was nine years old I had an adult library card where I visited often. I moved on to John Saul, Stephen King, Richard Laymon, Agatha Christie, and then found romance. I was hooked. I wrote poetry in my teens and then moved on to short stories. My first book was started after I read a real bomb of a book that ticked me off with really horrible characters and a plot that was shabby at best and I thought... I could do better. LOL.
I wrote my first book which will probably never see the light of day in the early 90's. I wrote a series of a few books from it. I'm a series fan! I kept writing for fun, wrote MANY books and then in 2009 I decided to try to get published. I wrote my first Sci Fi romance and Ral's Woman came to be. I submitted it and with a little tweaking, Ellorascave sent me an acceptance letter. It was kind of a 'Cinderella' experience for me. It's been a terrific ride so far and I'm really happy that I finally had the time to commit to writing full time. It's a dream come true.
This series is proving to be nothing like The New Species Series by Laurann Dohner.
The hero, Lorn was a total twit...............he goes somewhere else to get off with other woman because he can't do it with the heroine, Kira. Kira moons around him...throws herself at him, keeps getting rejected...please girl........get a life and get rid of this twit!!!!
None of the characters made an impression on me!!!!
The plot was just too silly at times!!! All the repetition...over and over and over again...just got on my nerves.....how I actually finished reading this book is a huge surprise to me!!!!
I don't think I will continue with this series. Just going to wait for some new books from The New Species Series.
I was definitely not disappointed with this book. This is the best story of the series so far.
Essentially the book works in two levels. There is the love story of Lorn and Kira on the first level, but on the second level there is the power exchange issues between the members of this particular VampLycan community.
We know from the previous books that evil clan leader Decker is on the run. Thus, the leader’s chair is empty. Lorn is the favorite and the chosen of the other VampLycan clan as well as Lord Aveoth himself to step up and claim the leader’s role. The problem is that Lorn is not entirely convinced that he fits the role. Moreover, his love for human girl Kira who has only minor VampLycan traits is his main problem in his life and not the politics in his clan.
But the time has come for Lorn to decide -if he loves Kira enough in order to claim her as a mate, -if he wants to help his people enough in order to claim the leader’s role and -if he is ready to punish his heartless father in order to be the alpha male in his family.
Between Lorn and Kira, Lorn is the one who hesitates the most, who is afraid he will hurt the person he loves, who does not take the extra step. Kira is more determine to have her happy ending, she is more persistent, she undeniably knows what she wants.
The book introduces a large number of characters and sets the foundation for more future books.
My main concern is that so far we have had 3 books about VampLycans and I am almost certain that the next book will be about VampLycans again. In this way, the GarLycans community which I am sure plays a big role in writer’s vision is still NOT PRESENTED ADEQUATELY.
4 "I'm so happy I liked this because I love LD" Stars!
Ok, Yay!! I want to do a little happy dance! Why do you say? Because I love Laurann Dohner but her last two book were C*R*A*P, CRAP! But you know what!? This one was not crap! It was what I love about Laurann Dohner; some loveable characters in an almost perfect society (there is a little discourse in this one though), some weird/strange/not quite right dialect, and some super sexy sex scenes. Classic LD smut. I loved it!
Lorn was a sweetheart alpha, and Kira was smart and tough. I loved them both! There were tons of side characters just waiting for their own stories to be told. This book gave me hope for this series. Because I really did not like the first two books in this series-mainly because I DID NOT like the heroines in them- I almost didn't read this one but I am so happy I did. Anyone that is an LD fan, but was feeling the same as I was about this VLG series should give this one a try. I'm back in. At least until we get Aveoth's story. Happy reading!
P.S. I really want more New Species, dangit!
P.S.S. This one ends in a slight cliffhanger. Not bad at all, just enough to make you want to read the next book and guess at who the main character may be.
P.S.S.S. ;-) I looked back to my reviews of the first two books in this series and it seems I kind of liked the first one, but thought it has some flaws. So maybe only the second one was crap. :-)
The following ratings are out of 5: Romance: ❤️💙💜💚 Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙📔 World building: 🌏🌍🌏🌎🌍 Character development: 😠☺️😋😍😘 Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙 Narration Type: Solo Narration
The heroine:Kira - she is the product of a VampLycan father and a human mother. When her mother was murdered, her father took her and returned to his pack in Alaska. The pack leader, Decker Fillmore was a brutal man who sees Kira as not worthy since she is mostly human. Though now Decker is on the run from the other packs and the GarLycan leader.
The Hero:Lorn - his father is a first generation VampLycan and was Decker’s closest advisor. Though Lorn and his brother hated Decker and refused to become enforcers under Decker. Lorn is the strongest alpha in the pack though he was reluctant to become pack leader after Decker left because he would have to challenge and kill his father.
The Story: Kira and Lorn used to play together when they were kids. As they got older, she fell in love with him and when she was fifteen, he realized she was growing up, but then suddenly stopped talking to her and she never understood why. Her father told her that due to Deckers laws which strive to keep the bloodlines pure, she could never be with Lorn.
Though Lorn had wanted Kira, his father was determined that he eventually mate with a VampLycan female. Decker had been about to kill Kira when Lorn made a deal with his father that he would stay away from her in order to save her life. Even now, his father says that Decker will return, and his laws are still in place. His father has found a VampLycan female from another clan who will settle with Lorn, though they are not fated mates.
I liked both Lorn and Kira from the beginning. Kira was a strong female heroine despite being a weak, mostly human female. I like the story because it was different and unpredictable in parts. I usually don’t like the friends to lover's trope, but this one was good since they had so much going against them. I also liked Lorn since the previous book when the other clans met with him to talk about him taking over as clan alpha. He had to think about it since he knew it might mean killing his father and that would devastate his mother.
These books have a lot of clan politics, which I’m usually not fond of, but I am liking this series. The world is complex, but it is different than in any other series. Like the first books in this series, this book is told in multiple points of view via solo narration and was narrated by Savannah Richards. After listening to the first few books in this series, I have really started to like Savannah Richards narration. She does a good job and does different voices for different male and female characters.
How to rate this without being too unfair? Well I will start off by saying that the heroine was too weak in her devotion of the hero that she came across as too pathetic. I didn't like her character not because she was horrible (she wasn't) but because she spent years pining for the Lorn knowing that through the years he was taking "trips" to another clan....meaning he was going off to have sex when he was in heat! I hated the fact that he wasn't celibate and that he was in total denial that heroine was his true mate but I did like how he protected her through childhood and the fact that he didn't just desert her when she got bit by a vampire. I def think his devotion to heroine was shown and if wasn't for the "trips" he'd made I would have adored him. The best thing in the book though was when he truly believed she was still a virgin and his anger and disbelief when he found out that she wasn't......that scene right there made me laugh in satisfaction because it was the only thing heroine did which I admired her for (losing her virginity to another guy) well done to her I say!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I have been waiting for this book and I couldn't wait to start it. I loved this book. The story continues with Decker still missing and now many want Lorn to take over his clan but Lorn's father has other plans. Kira has never been treated the same with a human mother and her being closer to her mothers side everyone has let her know she wasn't wanted. Everyone but her father and Lorn. Since she was young Lorn has watched out for her but then everything changed when she turned fifteen.
Kira has always loved him and she has always known he would one day take a mate. Lorn is first born and Kira will never be enough or ever be able to be with Lorn. One day on patrol Kira is attacked by vampires. That one night changed Kira's life. But Lorn may be able to save her, except that Lorn has his plate full with their clan his father and the expectations of everyone else, and though Kira and Lorn love each other it might not be enough.
I love Lauran Dohners writing I always have and I love this series, I am always wanting to know what happens next. I will say that at the beginning of this book I started to hate Lorn, in fact he made me so mad I literally started to treat my husband like he was Lorn. I had to shake my head and remind myself I was reading a book and my wonderful husband hadn't done anything but walk into the room. Kira really suffers in this book and it broke my heart reading all she had to endure, but that also shows how strong and amazing she is but the turn around in this book made me have an evil little smile on my face.
Thank goodness Lorn turns it all around and I easily fell in love with him. I loved Kira and Lorn together and their shared history and him always protecting her just made their story that much sweeter, though I wish they hadn't had to suffer so much. I will say I wish there was a little less of oh we can't be together because we have to think of the good of others. I get it but in my books I don't care about anyone else but the main couple.
We are introduced to new amazing characters and we again see Aveoth(yay). I can't wait to see what happens next. This series has been one I look froward to and can never get enough of. The world building is amazing in this series. Laurann Dohner has created a world I get sucked into on page one of every book. I do wish this book had an epilogue but that isn't a surprise. I really hope we don't have to wait long for book 4.
I love to read almost everything that Laurann Dohner writes but her last two books were awful. I was truly looking forward to this book, and I was not disappointed!
Just like the first 2 books in the VLG series, this book suffered from pack politics, archaic pack rules, and families hating each other.
The romance took a backseat to the maneuvers for pack power. I also had trouble believing the romance.
The hero and heroine have supposedly loved each other since they were kids. He stayed away from her so the pack leader wouldn't kill her. When his "needs" couldn't be ignored, he traveled far away to other towns and screwed other women there, but he always pictured heroine in his mind.
I understand hero is supposed to have these VampLycan instincts and he had to have sex. I can't believe heroine was his true mate because he was able to function with these other women.
In my opinion, that's not how the "fated mate" plotline is supposed to work. Heroine had sex with another man too, because she wanted to have a real life and stop waiting around for the hero.
This upsets me, because when I'm reading a fated mate book, I want hero and heroine (once they find each other) to be the only person they need or want. In the previous books, once hero and heroine found each other, no other lovers for either.
Here, hero and heroine knew each other since they were kids and basically cheated on each other. Yeah, yeah, there were extenuating circumstances where the pack leader said he would kill heroine if he ever found out hero and heroine were together.
So why didn't hero do anything about it? Did he kill the pack leader? No. Did he make any plans? No. He just waited around claiming he was protecting the weaker people in the pack and couldn't run away with the heroine even though she asked him to.
Wow. Heroine meant that little to hero.
I am interested to see how Veso, a VampLycan who was kidnapped by the vampires escaped and who his mate will be. He seemed like a really smart guy since he was plotting against the clan leader and taught heroine how to fight and be tough.
Star Ratings: Heroine (Kira): 3/5 Hero (Lorn): 3/5 Plot: 3/5 Grovel: none Cheating: none HEA: yes but no epilogue Triggers: h has known each time the H has spent time with other women (this was before they got together)
Average score: 3/5
Best Line: “I will fight to the death if anyone attempts to kill her!”
Worst Line: “He’d have to accept some woman his father had chosen for her lineage and suffer in silence. It was expected of him.”
Personal Review: This was an ok supernatural romance between two VampLycons.
Random Ramblings •The treatment of the h by all the clan members was horrific. I wanted to punch Brista in the mouth •I know the H is 2 years older than the h but I don’t know how old they are which is annoying •The repetition was annoying, I just wanted them to get on with the story •Loved how the h stood her ground in light of H’s hypocrisy about her not being a virgin
Another great addition to the VLG series. Yes, these stories are not like the New Species series, but this is a completely different world that is set apart from the NS. To read this series and expect it to mirror another series is unfair to the author. This is my favorite story out of the series so far. I loved Lorn and Kira as a couple. I REALLY want to read Lord Aveoth's story, but I wouldn't complain if the next story featured Lorn's brother.
Lorn and Kira. I kept putting off reading this because I'm not a fan of Romeo and Juliet type scenarios. But the story went in a direction I had not foreseen. So Lorn and Kira grew up in Decker's (the jackass villain from books 1&2) pack. Lorn is the son of Decker's right hand man (who is also a right bastard). Kira is the half human daughter of a member who tried to leave and live among humans. Now she is trapped in the pack. Trapped by her love for Lorn and the fact Decker would hunt her down and kill her if she tried to leave. Yet she is treated like dung by everyone except her father and Lorn. Childhood friends, Lorn is forced to shun her after puberty under threat of her death from Decker and dear old dad. It's all rather dreary and depressing and angsty for the first 15%. Decker is all set to mate with some mean bimbo from another pack in order to keep Kira safe. Then he learns that Kira still cares for him and everything is up in the air again even though nothing has changed. But things will change when vampires attack and Kira is forced into hiding. The intrigue was good and even though the main points get kinda belaboured by the author, the story moves at a good pace. Lorn makes up for his years of ignoring her. The ending is a little bit HFN because the intrigue etc is still ongoing, but Lorn and Kira's love is solid. Really enjoyed this one! I like the author's style of action because the choreography is good and it isn't over done. It is just enough to compliment the plot. I listened to it on audio and the reader who usually does Ms. Dohner's books (Savannah Richards) is fantastic as usual.
Ok when I first started reading this book, I was like oh ok different clan. Lorn we learn about in book 2 and he was intrigued enough to want to read his book.
I am so, so happy I did. You know that saying the bigger they are the harder they fall…Well boy howdy is that true here?
He has always been protective of Kira because her bloodlines are not as strong with her mother being a human. So he felt the need to protect her even if that means from himself.
Not only does he torture himself but it’s killing Kira too because she has been in love with Lorn since she was a little girl.
This story is one of fighting for what you want. And dealing with the consequences later. I love it. I can’t say it’s my favorite because Drantos stole my heart in book one but this is a very, very close second.
I am very invested in this series, I am getting how everything is coming together I need more I say MORE!!
Again Savannah Richards kills it with her voice! I can’t say enough good things I mean it she blows me away with each book I listen to by her.
*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*
I was really looking forward for this book to really change my mind about this whole series because I was this close to give up on it. I absolutely loved the first book -- it's one of my favorites but the second book was just horrendous.
This book had the potential to be great but I'm afraid it didn't work for me. At first I thought the third book was going to be about Lord Aveoth but since this one is about different characters in different community. I thought, "Okay we'll see."
Unfortunately, it just fell short. There's way too much political issue going on that there's barely any romance in it. I mean don't get me wrong, the political part was interesting but it just completely overshadowed everything. I found myself getting bored by the second.
And the Hero's past sex life that was mentioned was unsettling for me. I did not want to know that at all.
P.S. When are we gonna get Aveoth's book? I mean are we even gonna get one?
This series is starting to grow on me. I enjoyed book 3 more than books 1-2.
I wasn't expecting what happened to Kira and it certainly brought some twist and turns to the story. Lorn is a strong leader but he has to remember that Kira is not a weakling. She wants to stand by his side, not be over-protected and over-shadowed by him.
THE BEST ONE YET IN THIS SERIES! I freaking LOOOOOOOOOOOVED LORN! Sexy, loyal, a real bad-ass leader with a gentle, kind soul and Kira was a tenderhearted sweetheart who loved Lorn since she was a child. I SO enjoyed their romance and want another VLG book like NOW! LOL..perfectly written with the kind of heart, romance and sexy men we desire.
Lorn was not LD's best story in the VLG series in my opinion. The banter between Lorn and Kira was repetitive. They kept repeating over and over why they couldn't be together and what happen when they were children. Kira was born of a human mother, her father Davis was VampLycan. Kira had more human traits the VampLycan ones. She wasn't excepted into there clan and was horribly mistreated by the other children and adults. Lorn befriended her at a young age and they grew up together. Lorn protected and defended Kira from all those who would harm her. This is said over and over in many ways and by just about all the characters. I got it the first time. The story does pick up until midway through. The fight scene with Lorn and the elders for clan leadership was exciting. Especially with his brother fighting with him and some of the other VampLycans Kar Garson who believed Lorn should be there new clan leader. The scene with Kira beating the crap out of Brista the clan childcare giver was really good. Brista had tormented Kira when she was a child. I don't really like violence but these were the most exciting scenes in the story.
I also think I would have like the story more if Kira was a virgin and had not given her virginity to a human when she left the clan to go to school. I am old, so I still like to believe some young girls save themselves for the person they love. I understand why LD wrote Kira this way but for me it would have been better left out of the story. It would have been better if Lorn and her had gotten together somehow before she left for school. The swimming incident comes to mind when Lorn realize Kira is at mating age and she is no longer a child. That would have been perfect. LD never writes virgins in her stories. I think she should.
The other problem I had was the abrupt ending. It felt rushed or maybe to lead us into bk4. The romance between Lorn and Kira was luke warm. It was mostly about what could have been rather then what it is now. On the Whole the story is OK.
I enjoyed this story the most so far. It was sad and emotionally difficult to read some sections because Lorn learns how much he has hurt Kira...he apparently didn't realise that she returned his feelings because he had to avoid being close to her for so long. He finds out a little of how she has suffered when he finds out she was with someone else in college. Lorn will do anything to keep Kira safe...sometimes to the point of ridiculous. How he ever denied that she was his true mate is a wonder...but I think he didn't wanted to admit it because Decker and his father already knew she was his weakness. I enjoyed it right up to the point that the pages wouldn't turn anymore and I thought my reading app had frozen, only to discover...I was already at 100% of the book! I hope it's not too long before the next book in the series is out because this one has some cliff hangers...not about the main couple.
I loved Lorn in this book. Being in with the one he loved was tearing him up inside all because he could not be with Kira since she was a human. Kira was in love with Lorn since they were kids and he has always protected her from the other VampLycans because she was defenseless against their kind. Lorn had always been there as her protector but was unable to mate with her due to his own reasons. During his heat he would visit with other woman and never stay only because they were not the ones he wanted to be with and didn't care about hurting feelings in the process and was not looking to mate with any other if they were not Kira. Going out to patrol her area cause to Kira to come up against some enemies which caused Kira harm in the process and Lorn was the one to locate her and stay by her side as always. I was happy with the ending for them both and they were able to finally be able to mate with each other.
Kira was a mestizo, half human and half VampLycan, and she was a renegade in her clan. She was in love with Lorn since childhood, when they first met and he went on to defend her from attacks from other children. When they reached adolescence, his father didn't want Lorn kept his friendship with Kira, and forbade him to stay with her or she would be sentenced to death. For years Lorn obeyed his father. Until Kira was attacked and her human side became vampire, the main enemy of VampLycans. Kira would be killed anyway. It was time to Lorn make a decision: to claim the leadership of the clan. He would have to fight against his father and other elders. He would have to change the law decreeing to death who had strong vampire blood. And above all, he would have to accept that Kira was his soul mate.
Suspense, romance and a plot that holds the reader until the last page. 5 stars
I really enjoyed this book. A big change from the last one. I thought the main characters were - is sweet the wrong word? Kira was a little pathetic in her love for Lorn. Lorn was an interesting mix of crazy scary alpha and over protective. If only they’d talked to each other then all this misunderstanding could have been avoided!! Anyway, the big scenes where they work shit out and reveal what each other was thinking made sense and explained a lot. A satisfying read!!!
Self note doormat h The h chases and moon after the H, while he’s taking trips for his fuckfest with ow. He is mad when he finds the h not a virgin lol.
