The Unquiet Grave: Short Stories

Rate this book

A level 4 Oxford Bookworms Library graded reader. Retold for Learners of English by Peter Hawkins.

If you find a locked room in a lonely inn, don't try to open it, even on a bright sunny day. If you find a strange whistle hidden among the stones of an old church, don't blow it. If a mysterious man gives you a piece of paper with strange writing on it, give it back to him at once. And if you call a dead man from his grave, don't expect to sleep peacefully ever again.

Read these five ghost stories by daylight, and make sure your door is locked.

Atmospheric, gothic, and very creepy. Subject matter of strange creepy figures and ghosts screaming in your ear is what gets me.
These are classic gothic horror / ghost stories. Not violent, gory or vulgar (which I find cheap - not my kind of horror.)

I was given this book as a gift. I didn't have any high expectation about it because I've read ones similar to this before. The stories were alright but they're not scary at all. The charcoal artworks in the book are really great but it didn't really help with the scared factor. My favorite story is the one called " Casting Runes". I think they are much more grotesque than the others. The rest was kinda boring and predictable.

O inglês é excelente e tem um vocabulário espectacular mas não gostei mesmo nada da história em si. Admito que gostei do começo mas como depois começou a mudar de histórias achei um pouco foleiro e confuso.

4 a. Parkins was afraid that the moonlight might wake him up in the middle of the night, so he arranged a blanket and his umbrella to stop the moonlight shining on to his bed. However, an hour later, he was suddenly woken by a loud crash and he realized that bright shine was shining on his bed.

4 b I really was scared. When he found a strange whistle, the some unusual accidents happened to him. As the title wrote, the whistle invited ghosts to the owner. The ghost got into his room unless he locked his room. I finished reading at about midnight and so I tried to go to sleep, being frightened at ghosts.

5 there are many horror stories all over the world, but It is very different between Japan and other countries. It is very scared for me to listen to the horror stories whatever American or Japanese one. However this book told me that everyone in the world are frightened at same point.

This book is about 5 short ghost stories. I thought if the reader likes ghosts, then they will like this book. However personally I don't like ghosts so I thought the book was good itself, I didn't like the contents. Also, there is another problem. The book has been written in old English, (the character's quotes) and that also made it hard to understand it.
