Alyssa Satin Capucilli was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1957. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College, and pursued her interest in dance, becoming a professional dancer and dance instructor. Though Capucilli had written stories, poems, and even puppet shows as a child, she didn't consider a career as a writer until after her own two children were born. To this day she sees herself as both a dancer and a writer, and the two professions complement each other nicely: dancing is, in her words, “telling stories in another way,” and readers of her children's books can attest to the rhythm of her language. Since 1994, she has written more than 15 books for children, and her work has been translated into French, Hebrew, Afrikaans, Greek, and Bulgarian.
Capucilli lives in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, with her husband and children. They have a chocolate Labrador retriever named Huckleberry, who likes to watch the author at work.
Capucilli, Alyssa Satin. My First Karate Class, PICTURE BOOK. Simon Spotlight, 2016. $3.99.
A group kids describes their first karate class together. They learn how to warm up and stretch, block, and bow. They get new colors of belts as they learn even more. At the back of the book are the directions for kids to use with an adult to try some of the different stretches and karate moves provided in the book.
This is a really cute book with real life photographs that are fun to look at. The only problem is that it’s an early reader book meant for kids in kindergarten, first, or second grade and the kids in the book are much younger than that. I think it would be much more appealing for the right age group if there were pictures of kids closer to their own ages, not three or four year olds.
I like this for my seven year old who is a slow but steady reader. He takes karate, so that helps and it offers non-fiction variety while he learns to read.
This a great introductory series to first experiences. Using pictures of kids instead of illustrations gives kids a direct connect to themselves. Accessible language and length.
This book has good info! It is just right for preschool and early elementary readers. It teaches that quality in physical learning is more important than just competition.

It is an amazing book about real live picture for kids practicing Karate. Teach the kids how to make the moves like stretch, bend and balance. Also it is a very good book for physical activates inside the class or outside the class. Also children can learn some colors from this book like yellow, green, blue, brown, and black. I think this book give the children a sense of achievement when they feel that they make the right move. I like the vocabulary in this book like prowl like tiger and slither like snake. Activities in this book teach the kids balance and discipline and how they can control themselves either physically or emotionally. Content: 1- Always have a cool drink of water when you practice Karate. 2- Karate belt called Obi. 3- White Obi is for Beginners. 4- A black belt means you are an expert in Karate. 5- The uniform in Karate called gi.
We can put this book in the pretended play area or dramatic play area . Also we can let the kids imitate some moves from the book.
