Life isn't easy for a young woman alone in 19th Century Colorado, but when Emer Matthews needs to escape an untenable situation, she only has herself to depend on. She has no time for men having seen first hand the high price women pay for love, so she seeks solace with the sister she's never met, Sorcha. But when Emer gets to Boston, she discovers her sister has moved to Clover Springs and she's left alone with no money and no means to go back to Colorado. Lawrence Shipley is bored. He’s fed up of his match making domineering mother. He wants to gain independence by heading up the Shipley Banking Dynasty in Denver. But his mother has other ideas. She decides to go to Denver too, reluctantly agreeing to take Father Molloy’s latest protégée, Emer.
Emer is nothing like any woman Lawrence has met. She intrigues him and excites him but it seems she won’t have anything to do with him. Can he destroy the wall she’s built around her heart? Or will her past catch up with her and destroy them both?
Rachel Wesson was born in Kilkenny, Ireland but considers herself to be from the capital, Dublin as that's where she spent most of her life. Her dad brought Rachel and her two sisters out every Saturday to give their mother a break. He took them to the library and for ice-cream after. It took a long time for her sisters to forgive her for the hours she spent choosing her books! She grew up driving everyone nuts asking them questions about what they did during the War or what side they were on in the 1916 rising etc. Finally her Granny told her to write her stories down so people would get the pleasure of reading them. In fact what Granny meant was everyone would get some peace while Rachel was busy writing! When not writing, or annoying relatives, Rachel was reading. Her report cards from school commented on her love of reading especially when she should have been learning. Seems you can't read Great Expectations in Maths. After a doomed love affair and an unpleasant bank raid during which she defended herself with a tea tray, she headed to London for a couple of years. (There is a reason she doesn't write romance!). She never intended staying but a chance meeting with the man of her dreams put paid to any return to Ireland. Having spent most of her career in the City, she decided something was missing. Working in the City is great but it's a young person's dream. Having three children you never see isn't good for anyone. So she packed in the job and started writing. Thanks to her amazing readers, that writing turned into a career far more exciting and rewarding than any other. Rachel lives in Surrey with her husband and three children, two boys and a girl. When not reading, writing or watching films for "research" purposes, Rachel likes to hang out with her family. She also travels regularly back home - in fact she should have shares in BA and Aerlingus.
Little Sis meets Big Sis...but it takes a long time
Sorcha still dreams of meeting her mother and little sister. She is sure that her mother will be a wonderful person, and that she, her mom, and her sister can live in bliss in an intact family. Emer dreams of a lot of things: being a doctor or a nurse is one of them, but mostly, she sreams of being free...free of the gang her mother has made her grow up in, free of the threat of eventually being forced to bed the cruel and usually drunk Bill, free of her mother's drinking habits, free of her mother plannimg on selling her to be a saloon girl, free of men. She has lived with jer mother being a cruel, heartless woman, a drunk, and living with a succession of men without benefit of clergy. At 15, she escapes, and is hired by a woman who keeps her disguised as a boy because they work in a mining community. She learns from the business investments her employer makes. She spends a couple years working and saving, then heads to Boston to find her sister. She stops in a church, figuring that her sister, having been raised by nuns, will have close contact with a church. She happens into Father Molloy's church. She's still dressed as a boy...after all, it's safer to let people think she's a boy than know she's on a train as an unaccompannied female. Father Molloy is the best source of information ahe could find, as it turns out. And he ends up procurng both their passages to Clover Springs, via a wealthy parishioner, which means the priest's longsuffering housekeeper has to teach her basic manners, then move on to the rules of eating for rich people. Then the elderly priest falls and breaks his leg and can't go. Emer will be stuck with the rich family, who have to buy her dresses for their class of people, and she has to learn to walk like a girl. This is amusing for the young man who is the reason for the family excursion. The family is a banking family, and Lawrence, the younger son, has always been given to know that he is inferior to his older brother..He had always enjoyed summer visits with his Grandpa Joe, his mother's father, a miner turned farmer, and he wanted to go out west and live with his grandpa, not work in a bank. His parents lay down the law: 2 uears working in banking in Boston, and they tell him his grandpa doesn't want to hear from him until he has completed the 2 years. His grandpa dies before he can get out there, and Lawrence finds out he had agreed to no such terms. The family are now planning to open a branch in Denver. The idea had been to have the priest and the girl travel into Denver, and rest the 2 days between the train's arrival in Denver, and the leaving of the train that goes to Clover Springs. Both Lawrence and Emer are feeling an attraction to each other, but aside from his family wanting nothing to do with Emer, she has seen what women do for love, and she's not about to risk her independence to crawl around on her figurative knees begging a man to love her back. She high tails it out to Clover Springs, and hunts for and finds her sister. Nandita, Sorcha's Native SIL, and the freedman Frank, the blacksmith's, affection for one another is still an ongoing thing, on again, off again. Lawrence has gotten his belly full of the cruelty and obstinacy of his rich family's attitudes towards their workers and towards non-whites and small businesses in general...plus, his cousin, Mitchell, is always up in his business. Having an independent source of income from Grandpa Joe, he heads to Clover Springs to do 2 things: first, see if he can stoke up a better relationship with Emer, and second, to survey the area to see about starting his own bank, one for small bisinesspeople and anyone of any color that needs banking services, and he sets up his accounts in a different bank in Denver before he leaves. One thing about Emer was her curiosity - there was a doctor, near her mother's place, who'd come back from the war too shaky to doctor any more. She was the one who came to him with gang members who'd been shot, and he'd told her how to care for them. She has had extensive training in trauma care & herbs. When someone brings in 2 men who've been shot, she makes the sheriff either wash his hands or let her and get out of the way. Katie, the first of the orphanage's girls to be a mail order bride, is with Emer and backs Emer up. The doctor, when he returns, is astounded and wants her to become his nurse immediately. At that point, SHTF for Emer, and indirectly for Sorcha and the rest of their friends. Emer admist to being a member of the gang responsible for the shootings, a bank robbery in Denver, and another caper somewhere else. Things don't look good for Emer, but an unlikely person comes to her aid. A lot of things get resolved all around, Emer undergoes training with the formidable Mrs. Grey, and she is allowed to work for Doc. Since the orphanage girls start to talk about Laura, perhaps she is going to show up soon in one of these books.
Emer is the first of the heroines not to be part of those at the Boston orphanage or on the ship of with the other Irish immigrants. She is, however, the younger sister of Sorcha Matthews, who was in the orphanage. I enjoyed her spunk and her ability to survive. She certainly did not need Lawrence Shipley as much as he needed her. They made a good pair. The author uses some chapters to tell bits of previous stories from the points of view of other characters. This takes the reader out of the tale of Emer and Lawrence. Chapter 11 - Clover Springs has Sorcha fearing Emer's appearance ruining Sorcha's new life. We also leave that Nandita will move to the reservation with the Indians and that Frank was once a slave. Chapter 12 - Clover Springs has Mary and Davy having a baby and Frank being nervous about proposing to Nandita. Chapter 13 - Clover Springs has Nandita saying she cannot leave her Indian family, while Frank accuses her of "choosing" to be a slave. That is THREE chapters in which Emer and Lawrence's story does not progress. I do not understand such reasoning in story telling. Then in Chapter 40, Brian demands that Frank stop Nandita from leaving. Frank then goes to retrieve Nandita, asking Little Beaver, Ama, Mohe, and Salali, to come with him also. Modern phrases such as Mary saying she is as big as a "beached whale" takes from the story also. "Lapdog" actually meant a small dog held in one's lap, not so much of a person controlled by others until after the 1950s.
Emer Matthews has been living with her abusive mother and traveling with a gang of outlaws. Her mother loves one of them, and plans to sell Emer to a madam. Emer overhearing this news, runs away at age 15. She has had some medical training from a Civil War doctor who lived nearby. He helps her escape.
She befriends Minnie, who has had a hard life. Minnie's husband comes into money, and they move to Denver. But life for Minnie isn't better. She helps Emer travel to Boston to find her sister. Once there, Father Molley tells her of her grandmother, mother and sister. He puts her on a train back to Colorado with the rich Shipley family, who will be opening a branch bank in Denver.
Lawrence Shipley is attracted to Emer. She is spirited and intellegent. He loves watching her stand up to his mother. Once in Denver, Lawrence learns of her healing skills as she saves the life of a young boy hit by a wagon. Snobbery comes in when the called doctor refuses to help. At the hospital, Lawrence takes charge making sure the boy gets the best care and pays his bill.
Emer travels to Clover Springs to met her sister, but seeing the happy family is almost too much for her. She feels that her dark past will make them reject her. In the meantime, Lawrence is missing Emer and learning how some excellent customers are refused, because of class. He has had enough and resigns. He gets on a train for Clover Springs and Emer.
Wonderful story of social taboos and love conquering all.
Another fantastic story from Clover Springs series. Emer after having a traumatic time growing up with her mother who keeps company with outlaws is looking to find her sister after learning about her from there mother Patty. Emer runs to Denver where Father Malloy informs her Sorcha her sister is married and living in clover springs. Emer meets Lawrence Shipley from a very wealthy family after father Malloy arrangers for her to travel via train with the Shipley's. Lawrence is instantly attracted to her finding her intriguingly charming and funny. There are two love story's told as Frank and Nandita finally agree to marry after a few issues the characters from previous books as usual make an appearance especially Sorcha and her family Emers sister. It's a delightful series and I have the next book to start my favorite so far was Sorcha's story but I love reading and hearing of the previous characters being kept up to date of their stories in the series.
Rachel Wesson is generally a very fastidious person when writing and editing, but this book had so many skips and drops and writing/spelling errors that I almost gave up on this particular book, and the rest of the Clover Springs series, due to frustration on trying to figure out what was going on and having to go back to re-read pages that had misplaced or missing lines. I do wish writers would read their own stories prior to allowing them to be published so they can catch errors that their proof readers had missed (writers should NEVER submit their works to just one (or even two) proof readers, as that is how so many errors get missed). I sincerely hope that the rest of the books in this series are better as I consider it a waste of my money to pay for something with bad editing, especially when there are so many good books out there that are free.
As I have read this series of books I've enjoyed every one . I'm going to recommend this series to be read by people who enjoy reading about the trials of young women in the past. The Author has made me feel like I have to appreciate the lives we live now.
The narrator is this book is fantastic. I love the Irish accent since it is an Irish heroine in the book. Esther Wane really brought the book to life. I really like the premise of this story. Not far into the book, I knew I wanted to read the rest of the series. I am invested in these girls and their lives.
Somehow Emer grows up in an area overrun with thieves and saloons. Yet she is good kind and caring.she is also courageous. A very good read in this series.
I enjoyed the book after deciding it was all a very big fairytale, fun to read but not based in any real world drama. Fairytales are pretty much all that exist in American History. If you are anything but a white reader, you will see what I mean!!!!
The author has written a story of the ups and downs of life and what happens when the right people meet and how love grows. A story full of love and compassion.
Emer, to me, was a little different from the other bookies in this series. This is a good thing….. it keeps our interest and makes us see that the characters are so very different. This series so far is awesome and I’m looking forward to reading “ Laura “ next.
Emer is unexpected. She’s really loved the the life of hard knocks. She overhears a conversation between her mother and learns she has to run or be a ruined girl. She runs until she finds help and eventually finds more family. Story telling at its best.
This was a really sweet story about overcoming your past. Really great way it showed that it took time and hard work and determination. Made it seem more realistic. Good read.
Started this nice Christian series. Will continue to read the rest. I like clean romances and the plots are different from each other. The characters have ups and downs, but a happy ever after.
Read this as part of the 5 book series. Probably thought this was the most fun of the 5 because she was a part of an outlaw group which made for a little different story. Just have enjoyed all
Emer was brought up by her mother an outlaw but ran away when things got out of hand she wanted to find her sister Sorcha hoping she would be safe. A 5 star read
Emer had a hard life living with her mother, who was never a mother in the true sense, and a ruthless gang. After overhearing a conversation her mother had, Emer knew she had to leave as her mom was ready to sell her off. Emer was determined to make her way without accepting any type of charity and find her sister and finally have a family like she always wanted.
Lawrence Shipley lived a life under wealth and the shadows of the Shipley name. Wanting to prove that he could run his own branch, Lawrence heads up to Denver to the new branch they are opening. However, he didn’t expect his domineering mom and her lapdog, his cousin, to join him. Making the best of the situation, Lawrence tries to get to know Emer better who is traveling with them.
My heart just breaks for all the heartaches Emer had to go through as a child. No matter their age, no child should have to live with the knowledge their mother never wanted them. Sometimes Emer’s stubbornness and thoughtfulness stands in the way of her getting to know her sister, Sorcha, and Lawrence better. I think that the past and the way that she is helps to create the person that Emer is. Even when down on her luck and feeling low, Emer can definitely hold her own when it comes to Lawrence’s prudish mother. I had to laugh at the way Emer and Lawrence mocked and made fun at his mother’s expense.
You feel such happiness at Emer and Lawrence finally admitting what they feel for each other however you never expected anything to happen to come between that. I just wanted to smack Mitchell, the cousin, for being so rude and hateful. I am not sure how to feel about the surprise that Lawrence brought to Clover Springs to help get Emer released from jail. I feel that she lied and spun a fairytale to Sorcha. But I like how it pulled the ending together and put a finale to Sorcha and Emer’s mother.
The writing is smooth and the story does not feel rushed like some mail order bride stories do. The book captivated me from the beginning and kept my attention all the way to the end. It was a sweet romantic read with a lot of emotions mixed in. I can’t wait to read more by this author as she definitely takes the mail order bride books to the right level.
Emer Clover Springs Mail Order Brides Book 4 by Rachel Wesson
I LOVED this story! I have been blessed to read all the previous books and I think I like this one the best! Poor Emer, she has had such a rough life and yet, she is smart, sweet, strong, and still afraid of her past! Can she find her sister Sorcha and have the family she’s always wanted but never knew she had? This is a wonderful tale of survival amongst terrible odds! Lawrence is a rich son, but he is not spoiled! Can he stand up to his super strong willed mother? Can Lawrence put his strong sense of duty aside to do the right thing despite the repercussion? This book is jam packed with hardship and difficult choices that will bring about justice and love that will survive for the long haul! I can’t wait for the next book in the series!!
