'Killing the Sun' is a collaborative work by Mara White and K. Larsen. Before now, I'd never read anything by Ms. White, although I have enjoyed many of Ms. Larsen's works. I will definitely be looking for more of Ms. White's work in the future.

In 'Killing the Sun: Part 1' we meet Aimee Olsen, a young twenty-something that has returned to New York City from San Francisco, deciding to return to her boyfriend of over six years, Danny. Why did she ever leave? Well, here's the kicker -- He's married! Yes, Aimee's pampering boyfriend of SIX YEARS was married the entire time that they were together. Poor Aimee was absolutely clueless. Yet, despite her righteous fury, she has decided that she can't be without him and she's moving back to Danny.

Jumping back and forth between past and present, the history of Aimee and Danny comes to light. Aimee was a young lady that was trying to run as far from her small-town upbringing as possible. She had recently arrived in New York City when she met Daniel Montclair, aka Danilo Bartolini. She was young, beautiful and uneducated. She came across as incredibly naive, but hopeful.

Danny embodies all of the characteristics that Aimee does not. He is dark and dangerous. Danny grew up in the city and climbed his way to the top, fighting for everything he has. He is no stranger to violence or criminal activity. When he meets Aimee, he cannot deny the pull to her wholesome goodness. She is his "Sunshine" and after one night together, he has no intention of letting her go.

Little by little, Danny and Aimee's past is unveiled. Initially, I was rolling my eyes at Aimee's stupidity. The saying, "Fool me once..." was running through my mind. However, I came to see how Aimee got sucked into Danny's orbit. I also grew to believe that Danny's love for Aimee was genuine, despite the fact that he was married to another woman.

While I can't say that I agree with Aimee's choices, I did come to understand her motivations. It was easy to see how she was taken by Danny and his protective persona. Even as Danny's behavior grew increasingly controlling and violent, leaving me wanting to shake Aimee and tell her to "get out", I could not pull myself away. I was absolutely hooked on their story.

The story is told in three serials, each of which had me glued to my Kindle. While many readers struggle with serials and novellas, preferring to read only full-length books, I love a great serial now and again. Sometimes, a quick read between larger, full-length novels, is just what I need.

That being said, my biggest complaint about the 'Killing the Sun' series is that I think that it would have read better as one full-length book vs. three serials. There was no logical "break" in the story or big climactic event that served as a dividing point between each serial. It is almost like the author(s) just decided to end each serial when they hit a certain page number or date, without any regard for what was going on in the story. This was especially noticeable at the "end" of Part 1. I was just reading along and then I flip a page and out of nowhere it says that I've got to buy book 2 to continue. It was abrupt and left me scratching my head.

Of course, the story was so good that I immediately went out and bought the second part. So, while I may not have cared for the serial format, I did enjoy this story quite a bit. I wouldn't let it deter you from reading this story, just be forewarned that you may want to consider buying the compilation of all three at once vs. each serial individually.

This story also has many "dark" elements, as well as cheating. If those are touchy subjects for you, then I'd steer clear of this one. Danny and Aimee's relationship becomes increasingly controlling and abusive as he feels her slipping away from him.

For me, this was a fantastic dark read. I loved every minute of their story. I jumped right into Part 2 as soon as I finished this one. If you're a fan of darker stories, then this one is a great choice!

sym·bi·o·sis n. (pl. -ses ) [BIOLOGY] interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association, typically to the advantage of both.
That is a perfect word to describe the relationship of Danny MontClair and Aimee Olson.
He's a wealthy nefarious Businessman, she's a student
He's almost fifty and she's all of nineteen.
He's a worldly wise married man , she's a naive dollface beauty.
The twain shouldn't have met, but one look at her in the dockyards and Danny is smitten. He lusts after her , entraps her with his obscene show of wealth and false promises.
She comes from a tragic family in trailer park. Dad an abusive drunk, mom a druggie zombie, brothers in jail and a bleak future. Danny 's money and power wows her and she mistakes his lust for love .

I was just a small-town girl and Danny was an incredible fantasy

When she discovers he's a cheater, she leaves him but ends up struggling in San Francisco. One phone call from him and she's ready to be his doormat again. She has very little or no self worth and Danny Humiliates her into submission pretty soon

How do I have so little self-esteem that I got myself here? Why can’t I just leave him? I don’t know how to be Aimee. I only know how to be Sunshine, Danny’s pushover girlfriend

The story starts very convincingly, developes very well , the character of Aimee, though annoyingly spineless, i can relate to. She has her back against the wall and shes comfortable in the world of Quilted bed and lavish gifts. Survivalist tendencies dictate her actions and she IS in love with Danny because he takes good care of her. Nobody has ever done that for her. The writing is slick , jumping from past to present, insightful and couple of scenes are really smoking, esp the club scene ...whoa!!
The uses of metaphors are plenty and short clipped sentences are crisp and edgy. Very Broolynesque :)
The book ends in a ....not cliffy... but mid scene and it seemed incomplete to me. That's what buggered me off. In a flashback , They're sitting having dinner , he asks her to fulfil his fantasy and .......................
Yup ! That's it !
Had there been a situation with a twist or a scene with one thing life changing or catastrophic happening, it'd have been more effective. Knowing mara and katie , obviously I'll be reading next books but I'm just upset with a flash back, mid conversation ending .

When Mara White and K. Larsen put their heads together for a book, I know I am in for a ride!!!
This one is no exception.

Aimee, young innocent, very gullible, addicted to Danny.
Danny, 50 years old, married, bossman, total dick.

description

Aimee Olsen is a small town girl raised by an impoverished family. Learning to live simply was their only option, especially after a certain event changes how her family is perceived in their community. In hopes of starting a new life, Aimee sets out for New York City where she meets a man that offers a sense of security. While Aimee isn’t materialistic, he introduces her to new experiences and she feels fortunate for finding such a nurturing boyfriend.

“You are so vulnerable, and I feel like it’s up to me to toughen you up.”

Daniel “Danny” Montclair (a.k.a. Danilo Bartolini) grew up in Brooklyn and was raised by strict Sicilian immigrants. Rebelling against the normalcy and mundane life of his family, Danny was enamored with the wise guys of the neighborhood. Fast forward, Danny runs an empire but when he sees a girl that exudes innocence and sunshine, he knows he must make her his.

“Some things you can just buy, other things you have to earn.”

For six years, Aimee and Danny have been together but Aimee is no longer happy knowing her place in the relationship. After only having Danny to rely upon for so long, she questions their future and tries to move forward on her own; however, Danny’s influence is far reaching.

“There isn’t much purity in this world, so when you find some, you’ve got to hang onto it like a life preserver in treacherous water.”

In this first episode, the foundation is set for each character and the plot is driven by their circumstances and by their individual choices. Aimee is a good-natured character who likes to see the positive in people despite being treated poorly by her peers. At times she can be naïve, but her decisions show how life just isn’t black and white. With Danny, he is a domineering man with conflicting priorities, especially toward Aimee, as he knows what right decision is but chooses the opposite. While their relationship is loving at times with combustible sex, it is also getting toxic.

“He pounds me until my flesh screams, until my back threatens to snap from the pressure and impact. With one hand coming over my hip he uses all of his fingers to rub flat against my clit until I explode into orgasm and growl out his name. I want to hit him. I want to spit in his face. He grabs my hair and yanks my head back."

Told in dual POV and with a non-linear timeline, the varying perspectives and shifts allow the reader to understand the motivations of the characters that parallel their past and present. The pace is steady and the tone is tense at times since the path Aimee and Danny will take is unknown. At this point, I’m not sure what to expect from either character but understand the choices they’ve made.

Mara White is a new author to me but having previously read K. Larsen, I am familiar with the eerily quiet lull she can create before twists and reveals. Moving forward to book two in this series, I look forward to reading how these characters either progress or digress.

This book would appeal to those who appreciate that life’s choices aren’t always obvious and that good people make bad decisions.

You know how you can tell if a book is amazing? If there are no characters you love or relate to you and you still cannot not put the book down. Every page draws you in a little closer to figuring things out, you think. I devoured this book by these two authors that have become my personal dream team of authors. I want to listen in on their plotting, I want to hear how this all comes together in a way that is gritty and raw. It's not a romance so please don't go into it wanting a pretty little story. This book is smart. It's intriguing. It's addicting. It's not pretty.

You all know how I love not pretty stories. Top of my list of books I've read this year. Bravo to these two amazing authors.

Wow, these two together certainly write intriguing books that have you really using your grey matter to try and read between the lines. This is the first in a series and definitely whets your appetite for what is to come. For a serial this was a really decent length too so certainly gives you flavour of what is to come. Cannot wait for the next one. (full review to come)

K. Larsen and Mara White, a dynamic writing duo, are back for an intense, mind-blowing, 'don't blink' kind of a thriller. Killing the Sun will keep you on your toes as it weaves a tale of love, hate, enemies, lovers, secrets, and lies. It's a nail-biter that'll have you devouring the pages in record time, only to leave you pouting for more when it comes to an end!

A cliffy, a NOT cliffy, but a mid conversation ending????? HOLY HELL! I was like "Where the fuck are the rest of the pages??."

I didn't relate with any of the characters, nor did I love them. But the writing style and the story itself definitely caught my attention.

To say, "I'm intrigued" is an understatement. I have no idea to where the authors are going with the story but I have this feeling that will be something else and I can't wait for it.

I will be here pouting till I get the next book.

Okay I don't even know where to start with this! If you want something addictive, then read this. Once I started, I couldn't put it down. This book is not a romance, but there is plenty of sex; and in a way, it is strangely romantic, because of the heroine's hopeful outlook on relationships and love.

This is the story of young Aimee, who arrives in New York City from Oklahoma to start a new life. She meets Danny, a very powerful, much older man who sweeps her off her feet. There are several other very intriguing characters who may or may not become important in later parts of this story. The synopsis hints at dark turns but the first part is not all that dark; gritty, yes, but no sadism (yet!) The writing is very fast-paced and kept me engaged.

The non-linear timeline of this book threw me off balance and kept me on the edge of my seat. It was a little disorienting but the real kicker is the ending! Or lack of one. I am very intrigued by this story and will definitely read the next installment.

As book one of a novella trilogy, this novella serves as the set up. The story is told in both past and present, mostly from Aimee's POV, and occasionally from Danny.

In the past, we learn of Aimee's less than perfect home life.
An uncaring mother.
An alcoholic and abusive father
And two brothers who end up in prison.
I think there's a twist here, but I haven't figured it out yet.

The past introduces us to Danny. Aimee's sugar daddy.
I didn't like this guy from page one.
He's controlling and manipulative.
Plus, he hides a lot from Aimee and given his supposed love for her, I couldn't figure out why.

The past bleeds into the present as Aimee has recently returned to Danny's clutches after a lame attempt to leave him. But Danny isn't the same man she fell in love with. He's angry and taking it out on Aimee. More reason to dislike him.

This novella also introduces us to Wade, Aimee's neighbor, and Leif, the mysterious guy from the elevator. How these two men will play a role in Aimee's life going forward remains to be seen.

Ending abruptly, I'm left with some questions.
Will Aimee grow a backbone?
Will Danny ever change?
Will Aimee see something better with one of the other men?

We shall see . . .

I read and loved Missed Connection by these 2 authors and it gutted me so I knew I wanted to read more from Mara & Katie. I wasn't sure what to expect with this one but I was intrigued.

I don't want to add spoilers but I will say the story reminded me of a naive little red riding who is lost and falls in the clutches of a bad wolf in sheep's clothing.

Aimee comes from a poor dysfunctional trailer park family and after a traumatic unspeakable event tears her family apart she leaves her hometown and ends up in NYC. There she meets Danny, a much older, worldly man who seduces her. Aimee believes she loves him because he takes care of her. Danny just wants to have his cake & eat it too.

I love these authors' writing style because it's unique and beautiful. I always enjoying reading stories that are different and outside the norm. This book ends in a rather unusual cliffhanger which kind of threw me off but I am definitely hooked. I already pre-ordered books 2 & 3 because I need to find out more....more about her neighbor and more about elevator guy. Who is he? Their 1st elevator ride was HOT!!

I'm not sure about this one. It was just ok for me. Kept waiting for something to happen. I didn't feel a connection with the characters. I'm hoping Aimee comes alive in book two. She has a ton of potential.

Killing the Sun is a different book from any I've read before. The main characters, Aimee and Danny, don't fit the traditional mold for a love story. Aimee had a tough life growing up and ran away to New York City to try to make a better life for herself. Danny was a self-made man, involved in sadistic fantasies and crime. Broken into 3 parts, Killing the Sun follows their story.

I had a little trouble staying focused in the beginning. The story line jumped from the present back to different times in the past and back again. In addition, the story's point of view changed, sometimes as Aimee, sometimes Danny, and possibly others. Once I got used to the changes and was able to adjust as I read, I really got into the book. I found myself getting annoyed with Aimee for staying in the situation she was in but then feeling sorry for her for the lack of choices she had at times. Sometimes I liked Danny and many times I hated him. There were some twists and turns and some obvious events.

Overall, I liked the book. I will agree with some of the other reviews I read - this is not a story for all. BUT if you like books that stray from the norm, this may be the book for you.

"I'll do whatever you want me to, Danny."

A slow unravelling of a girl who is naive and ripe for the picking, perfect prey for the predators roaming the big city. Leaving her trailer trash upbringing to chase a dream of being something more Aimee is the stereotypical small town girl. A tragic back story teamed with high hopes leads her on a path of self destruction as she desperately clings to half truths and only sees what she wants to see. Until the stark reality of her day from is harshly revealed and she slowly awakens from her slumber. Told from her past and her present we slowly see how Aimee evolved into Sunshine and how she is determined to claw herself back.

It's intriguing. I like it. I want to know more. The plot is twisting, slithering, slipping like the serpent Danny is...and I can't get enough. The writing style keeps the reader on the edge of their seat, engrossed in the why's and motivations that make intelligent people dumb. It's darkly sensuous and alluring but eaves you feeling a little dirty for enjoying it as much!

A four and a half star read.

Aimee is in love with Danny, a married man 29 years older than her. He’s the only man she’s ever known or loved. With lots of hot sex, Larsen and White put a unique twist on the classic mistress tale. This book is definitely not the complete story though, ending with a major cliffhanger and lots of foreshadowing about what is to come. I look forward to seeing what happens to Aimee next!

This book is not what you'd ever expect, the description by the authors is very true, however, don't let that scare you off. This was one of the best reads I've had. I loved that it was different, I loved that it made me think, I loved that it made me appreciate my life, but at the same time I was a little jealous of Aimee for her strength.

In part 1 we meet Aimee as she is now (26 years old) coming back to NYC after a short 6 months of trying to leave Danny. Danny is much older (50) and somehow after meeting 6 years ago they fell in love/lust/lies and found themselves in a relationship unlike any other, but one neither seems able to escape from.

This book goes back and forth between present and past, and between povs. At times the transition could be a little confusing, but I found after just a few sentences I was able to pick up the change and go with it with no problems. I really liked how we'd get pieces of the past interspersed throughout the present story, and the pieces would all fall together at the right time in the present story to really bring together the present state of minds, and understanding of how they got to where they are.

No this is not a love story, there is no hero and there are some dark and disturbing, but I just couldn't not read. Had to know more. I can't even describe how I felt while reading as the authors did warn us, but I was still hopeful for a HEA, hopeful for some light in all the dark. More than that though, while reading I found myself connecting to Aimee a girl I have nothing in common with and cheering for her to rise above. This isn't like anything I've read, but I'm so glad I did, part 1 was a great start, now I need NEED the other 2!

Let me first say that this book just ends. Yes ends, mid sentence and you will definitely want to read the next instalment in this series.

We meet Danny, a shrewd business man, a manipulator, smooth talker and takes what ever and who ever he wants. At the age of 44 he stumbles across Aimee and is instantly smitten with her.
Aimee, a sweet naive 19 yr old who thinks the world of Danny until she finds out he is a cheater and dumps his arse. 6months she holds out for and it only takes one phone call from him for her to go back, only Danny ups the anti and he starts to treat Aimee more like a pet than a Girlfriend.

The story is told in dual POV and flicks from past to present and now 6 years from when they first met. While I love to hate Danny, K Larsen and Mara White weave their magic and always redeem Danny for being such an arse.
Aimee is still the naive, small town girl who never forgot where she came from and at times I just wanted to yell and shake some sense into her.

The writing flows and the sex scenes, especially the one in the club, is HOT. The secondary characters intrigue me and I have my own ideas as to who they really are and what their purpose is, especially elevator guy.

This is the first book that I have read from these two authors and I must say I will be following up and reading many more of their books.

This book was given to me in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first book I've read from these two authors and I wasn't quite sure what to expect. The story is told through dual POV and it's told through Aimee and Danny and their story so far. The story is set is the past and the present, allowing you to see how the relationship began and how it ends up at the end of the first book.
I wanted to like Aimee, as she had been so through much in her life, especially with her family. But I just wanted to shake a lot of sense into her, as she was worth so much than she was getting. I loved her friendship with Wade, as he was just wanted the best for her. I liked how she got stronger throughout the book, but I didn't like how she allowed Danny to treat her.
Danny is a man who knows what he wants and doesn't care who he hurts. This is obvious to me throughout the book and I just didn't like him at all. There was something off about him and in my eyes, he doesn't deserve Aimee and her sweetness or innocence. How he treated her annoyed me but his tender side was sweet to read about.

The sex was hot between them, especially the club scene, but I want to know more about the mystery elevator guy. He seems like a better match for Aimee and he's sexy! I'll be reading the next book to see what happens after Aimee gets a new job away from Danny.

This book is a series you will need all three to get the full story. I was so intrigued by the Warning that this in not a HEA , so of course you have to read it. This is a story about Aimee who came from a trailer park in Oklahoma lived with her father who was killed by her twin brothers and they are on death row ( I think their is more to this )and her overweight depressed mother. Aimee at 19 decides to change her life and moves to NYC and starts a volatile relationship with business owner Danny MontClair his is in his late 40s and super wealthy. The first part is about how the relationship is not easy and Danny starts to get violent sexualy with Aimee and he controls the relationship by taking care of her. I really felt for Amiee a young inexperienced kid that gets swept off her feet , if it was me i would do the same. Danny is a dirtbag and is so controlling but then I think he really has feeling for her especially to be having this affair for 6 years .The sex scenes are steaming and they both seem to be all over one another. These authors really get you to feel for these characters, the ending sucked it was a conversation that just ended. On to part 2

Aimee and Danny's story will suck you in from the beginning...and hang on, because it is quite the ride. This story had me stepping out of my comfort zone of romantic love stories, and I enjoyed every minute of it.
Aimee had a very rough upbringing. Once she leaves home, she finds Danny. Their relationship is crazy, dark, and twisted. Their age difference, and the secret Danny is keeping from Aimee, makes for quite the story. There were parts of the story when I wanted to shake Aimee and tell her to quit letting people walk all over her...but then the story wouldn't have been the same. This book is told from both Aimee and Danny's POV. I found that to be a crucial aspect of the book. It's nice to know what each is thinking and how each of their minds view the situation. I will not give away any spoilers...if you want to know, read the book!
I was glad I was given the opportunity to read such a book. Maybe I will dabble a little more into the darker books in the future.

I read all three parts at once so this review is over the 3. This book was a page turner with all that happens throughout the story. You want to yell and scream at Aimee, then at Danny. This book is different than most books I have read because it is not a typical romantic story. I'm used to different bumps in the road or craziness, but this one definitely has some twist to it.

You can help but feel sorry for Aimee and what she endured as a child. Then you see Danny and think oh this is her knight and shining armor. Then that changes and seems more like a puzzle.

Wade her new neighbor seems nice. Leif is also interesting and seems like he could be good.

So many parts make you double think things and then you think you have figured everything out, then surprises and some f'd up stuff happens. After this happens you have to continue reading to see what happens next.

I read as a book, not a series, so I’m reviewing that way. Just a warning.

Aimee Olsen flees to NYC and into Danny’s life under mystery and intrigue that keeps the reader constantly guessing and never quite knowing who is the one that is in the wrong. Danny is a shady guy that runs a shady business but Aimee isn’t honest either and the book unfolds from past to present and there is no knowing what is to come next.

This book is sizzling. Aimee and Danny are explosive, both positive and negative energy spewing everywhere. It is insanity. There is no telling where this will end and how they will get there. I found myself nervous and anxious and I would take breaks just because I couldn’t go on.

They are honest that this is not a romance. It’s not. But it is so, so very good. It doesn’t matter. It makes you feel and it’s so very real. It is so well written it is just an incredible book. I will be thinking about this book for a very long time to come.

So glad this was free

Absolutely nothing interesting happens. There are a lot of pointless flashbacks. You feel bad for Aimee, even though she is kind of annoying. She knows that she needs to leave and she wants to, but Danny always does something nice to draw her back in. It shows the innerworkings of abuse. I honestly don't see the appeal in Danny at all. This book was a waste of time and the only thing I am happy about is that it was free.

Wonderful writing!

Part one left me wanting more!! Aimee had some crap dealt her way and fell for the wrong guy! Lots of sexiness and plenty of sadness can't wait to start part two! Love this writing duo!!
