A New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, she’s renowned for writing heart-wrenching romances with laugh-out-loud dialogue, alpha males, and absolutely sizzling sex.

I met my dearheart when vacationing in the Caribbean. Now I won’t say it was love at first sight. Actually since he stood over me, enjoying the view down my swimsuit top, I might have been a tad peeved—as well as attracted. But although we were together less than two days and lived on opposite sides of the country, love can’t be corralled by time or space.

We’ve now been married for many, many years. (And he still looks down my swimsuit tops.)

Nowadays, I live in the west with this obnoxious, beloved husband and a seventy-pound lap-puppy. I’m a gardener, and I love nurturing small plants until they’re big and healthy and productive…and ripping defenseless weeds out by the roots when I’m angry. I enjoy thunderstorms, collecting eggs from the chickens, and visiting the local brewery for the darkest, maltiest beer on tap. My favorite way to spend an evening is curled up on a couch next to the master of my heart, watching the fire, reading, and…well…if you’re reading my books, you obviously know what else happens in front of fires.

Three years ago, wife had been a four-letter word. Beth had transformed the word into one that meant miracle.

How is it possible that this series just gets better and better? Because with each new book, I just fall more and more in love with these characters. But no characters touched me as much as Nolan and Beth. This couple was first introduced in Breaking Free, which I highly recommend reading before this one. It's a full standalone with a HEA but it builds the foundation you'll need to truly understand the depth of these characters.

Now normally I am not a reader likes continuations, especially if I felt the first book had a perfectly satisfying HEA, but in the case here, I wasn't about to pass up another book by one of my favorite authors. Boy am I glad I read this! This was best sort of follow up you could get for a beloved couple. It manages to strengthen their relationship, show a natural progression of their life, and yet somehow also be that perfect little cherry on the top you didn't realize their story needed.

Protecting His Own takes place three years into Beth and Nolan's marriage. It shows the struggle that Beth still faces with the remnants of the memories of her abusive past and her devastating pain over learning that the one thing she's wanted, she may never be able to have.

As a mother, this book managed to be a one two punch straight to the feels. I spent a good portion of it a blubbering mess. This was brilliantly written with just the write amount of emotion that's guaranteed it won't leave a dry eye in sight. It was also a beautiful story of second chances.

Cherise Sinclair added a secondary POV from one of the two young boys that are introduced in the story. I have to say that this may have been one of my favorite parts. Not only do you get to see Beth fall in love with them, but you get to experience their side of things. It broke my heart to read about their horrible situation, and having the older boy's POV just added that perfect something that this book needed.

Of course beyond all that, this is also the continuation of Beth and Nolan and their relationship. Nolan is still the intense Dom that he's always been; completely and utterly in love with and devoted to Beth. You'll just fall in love with him all over again in this book. Guaranteed.
She'd never found anyone who kissed like him, patiently continuing until she gave him everything he wanted.

Cherise also introduces two new VERY intriguing characters, and their set up is so freaking delicious, that I'm practically salivating for their book.

Protecting His Own is an emotional journey of second chances and love. Written with Sinclair's signature eroticism, it was so far beyond just a BDSM romance. It was beautiful, touching, and one of the most satisfying continuations for a favorite couple that I have ever read. There's a reason this author is on my auto-buy list, and this book only serves to show why. If you haven't yet discovered this amazing author and this series, I'm not sure what you're waiting for. It's an absolute must read.

Past me had no taste, this reread was terrible.

Did you know that’s it’s men’s job to protect and take care of women, even if said men are only six years old and the woman is in her thirties?

But that’s ok women aren’t helpless, they cook food and make sure the cookie jar is full. And when they cry and have trauma you can use bdsm to heal them. But men’s traumas have to be smothered or figured out for themselves.

Sinclair is always doing her part to hold up traditional gender roles and disguise them as kink. In reality kink pushes against traditional roles, but this is white rich people kink so different rules, I guess. 😏

Also does every single female main character in this series have to be incredibly insecure? Is this supposed to be relatable? Because I am not insecure and though all humans have insecurities, most women I know aren’t riddled with them and seeking men to fix and validate them.
And all the male characters are interchangeable, body positivity or portrayals of different shapes and sizes only applies to women. The men are all tall, muscular, with six packs and perfect hair. They are incredibly handsome and have few, if any flaws. Where is the inclusivity for the men? I’d love for Sinclair to write a short king or a guy with a bit of meat on his bones. She always goes on about how men like all different shapes and sizes of women but does she not realize that women do too? Or are women all just shallow and looking for superhero physics?

Also as per usual the villains in this book are one dimensional, moustache twirling caricatures. Absolutely no care was put into making them complex or giving them any kind of motivation for the bad behaviour other than just being bad or crazy. They have no backstory and are just there to torture the main characters. This is a novella and yet we have many bad guys who do bad things that don’t serve them at all.
Why did the social worker actively menace the young boys and lie to them? Why is he a social worker at all if he has no modicum of caring for children? He can’t be in it for the money. And the evil grandmother was taking on children she doesn’t want just to abuse them? Why? Her reasons were flimsy and didn’t hold up to even a small amount of scrutiny. This causes the plot to be extremely melodramatic because bad people realistically don’t exert the themselves to actively be inconvenienced. Is everyone a sociopath in this town? There are also so many small moments of melodrama sprinkled through the book that just serve convenient or lazy plotting. Like Nolan doesn’t want to explore surrogacy because he has three separate personal examples of people close to him dying or having babies stolen from them by surrogates?? Like what? I don’t even know one person in my life who’s ever used a surrogate let alone three people with extremely and dramatically traumatizing surrogacy stories. You really have to wear a tinfoil hat or something to read this book and believe any of the side stories or character motivations. It’s just so cheesy and trite. 🤮.

I’m so tired of this author. Why did I reread this. Delete these from my kindle for me please? Thanks.

This is one of the series I started just for the smut but ended up genuinely caring about the characters. So I'm more than happy with the way the series has evolved and now has a lot less sex, though not less sizzling, and focuses more on the plot and the relationships between the characters. Protecting His Own is a follow-up story of one of the very first couples in the series. It's the first time that we have a couple featured twice. Usually we just get a few scenes here and there to see how the folks are faring now that the major problem has been worked through.

Beth's original story was hard for me to read because of all the abuse she had suffered at the hands of her sadistic ex-husband. But as with all of Ms. Sinclair books we got the HEA at the end. It was in a way too good to be true ending. It's one of the things I originally disliked until I caught a couple of glimpses of Beth and Nolan in the other novels. Sure the major issues were worked though in the original book but Beth still struggles with the programming of her ex and has all the problems that stem from it. Sure it's not as bad as it used to be because she's slowly healing but the trauma is still there and it won't ever go away completely.

And now another result of Kyler's (the ex) atrocious actions has reared it's ugly head and it can't be resolved in a few scenes here and there. So we got another Beth and Nolan book. Hooray! This time we get to delve a bit into other forms of abuse and trauma. Because two little boys with a drug abusing mother and an a**hole of a boyfriend enter the scene. In the previous novels we saw the battered women's shelter and we know that most of the Shadowlands' gang is heavily involved with it. And this is where we met the adorable Grant and Connor. My heart broke for the two little munchkins. After a series of events the two kids get placed in Beth and Nolan's home for fostering. The kids slowly begin to heal Beth's battered soul just as surely as her care and love starts to heal theirs. It's a truly beautiful story that shows that the good can prevail and that some TLC can make a hell of a difference.

While the aftermath of abuse is the main point around which the story revolves and is what drives the plot forward there were some normal everyday troubles that plagued the couple. Jealousy was one of them. I'm happy to report that unlike most romances I've read the jealousy was not a plot device (or rather wasn't just a plot device) and was not confined to just one of the characters. Sure it was more pronounced in Beth because it triggered her feelings of unworthiness left behind by her a**hole ex but Nolan also had his moments. As it's only normal after a long separation. After all they're both just humans. Another almost mundane problem was fighting the system. In this case the Child Protective Services in the face of the uncaring agent assigned to the children's case. He's a representative of all those bored bureaucrats that don't give a shit about their jobs and just do the bare minimum. And those are usually the ones who become malicious if you have the audacity to ask them to actually do their damn jobs. We've all had to deal with one of those at least once in our lives. It's extremely satisfying to see one of them brought to semi-justice even if it's only in a book.

The thing I love most (apart from the requisite happy ending which is the only reason I can stomach some of the more brutal parts of these books) is the friendships and community the characters have build for themselves. I love how everyone of the members of the Shadowlands is always ready to help. They're like an army always ready to go on a crusade for each and every member of the group. That girl gang kicks ass! And that close friendship is the real reason why I return to this series so often and can barely wait for each new instalment.

From the things I've written so far you might have been left with the impression that these are dark and heavy books when in fact they're anything but. There are some dark moments and some heavy themes but the books themselves are mostly light and funny, easy to read and most importantly they leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling inside (and tingling unmentionables :D because let me tell you the sex is HOT) and with a more optimistic outlook.

Loved it. With each and every new release this series gets even better.
Masters Of The Shadowlands is the perfect gateway for romance readers curious about BDSM erotica.
The main focus is always about characters dynamics, men and women finding their soulmates through a common need to serve or dominate. Cherise Sinclair writes such beautiful relationships, it goes much further than basic erotica. The bonds she ties between Doms and submissives as well as the all emcompassing friendship displays will without a doubt make you longing for a Shadowlands membership.

In Protecting His Own, we revisit a couple we met in Breaking Free (MoS #3) Beth and Master Nolan—and although I usually don't really care for sequels, novellas and follow-ups about characters, I was so pleased with how this one turned out! From the moment I started, I couldn't stop reading.

I've read this book in less than 5 hours, I just couldn't get away from all the feels, the cuteness from the kids, the overall tenderness and devotion demonstrated between Nolan and Beth as well as many other Shadowlands characters. It deals with a couple of heavy subjects, and more than once tore at my heart but the exemplary display of emotions and genuine benevolence from Beth and Nolan for the kids soothed any rips and aches. Such an heartwarming read it put me on a book high and I was left with no other choice but to read the next book right after, Mischief and the Masters. (Spoiler alert : I loved it!)

Protecting His Own truly made me reconnect with this series and all the amazing characters the author created. More than smut and BDSM play, MoS is about friendship and love and getting to know those characters will well and truly get you addicted!

Beth and Nolan are living their HEA, though they haven’t had children yet and Beth is desperately trying to find a way, even going through fertility treatments. As they explore their options to build their little family, they grow closer to Connor and Grant, two little boys with a horrible living situation who need someone to love and take care of them. I could ask all the usual ?s, but you know the drill, so let’s get to it.

description
-Ms. Sinclair does it again: I’ve enjoyed The Shadowlands series from the very beginning and Ms. Sinclair manages to mix all the elements I love about it in one lovely novella - the issues are real, these are characters that you’ve gotten to know over a long period of time, and Ms. Sinclair never forgets what brought her readers in the door - good old romance with some damned fine smutty sex.

-Good BDSM: When I read the blurb for Protecting His Own, I was a bit concerned about the balance between Beth and Nolan’s BDSM needs and how it would play out while dealing with more serious issues like infertility, the foster care system, and adoption. I needn’t have worried. The story is engaging, but doesn’t forget the romance. There’s hot, kinky sex but it’s not gratuitous and helps to show Beth and Nolan’s bond. Overall, it’s good balanced storytelling that gave me another emotionally satisfying story, while planting the seeds for future entries.

-Connor and Grant: These two boys rode right in and stole my heart. Their history is tragic, their lives painful, but once they get to blossom under Nolan and Beth’s care, you can’t help but root for them all to win.

-Love after the HEA done right: Beth and Nolan fell in love in book three, Breaking Free and they went through alot to earn their HEA. Ms. Sinclair doesn’t just introduce some random just to create tension (though there’s a moment where it’s certainly possible), but delved into their history and created an obstacle that was believable, emotional and way more interesting than just an old OW/OM plot. I was very grateful for it. That said…

-Not a standalone: The series is up to book 10 (this book makes 11), so there’s alot going on in this ‘verse. It’s why I compare it to a soap opera - part of the fun of watching a soap is, when it works, it’s all about the characters that you come to love, overcoming obstacles (reality based, and sometimes not) and growing in a way that you just don’t get in a standalone book.

Now, I’ve read them all, but even I had to delve way back into the deepest, darkest corners of my addled memory to refresh myself on the details of Beth and Nolan’s romance. I don’t think it would be quite as enjoyable for a reader to dive in at this juncture.

-My only quibbles: It’s a bit of a fairy tale. Now, sweet, sweet, kinky love is in my romantic wheelhouse, so I like this, but it’s fair to say...well, just don’t think too long and hard on the difficulties of adopting in the US, and how everything wraps up a neat, little bow. There’s no depth to the villains and the setup is very clear where the series is going next. I’m fine with it, but if you’re into the super nitty, gritty side of BDSM, this entry doesn’t give that kind of fix.

description
I enjoyed revisiting Beth and Nolan, as well as getting to see a mix of old and new characters from Ms. Sinclair. I would recommend starting from the beginning, if you’re inclined to take a stroll through the Shadowlands. As long as you’re into safe, sane and consensual BDSM, I think you’ll enjoy it.

Definitely one of my favorites in this series. It was so nice to see Nolan and Beth increase their family and the same time address some insecurities.

I love how Nolan and Beth put themselves out there and gave love to two little boys. What they got back made me tear up and smile at the same time. Families don't always come in the form that we anticipate, but as long as there as is genuine love and patience, it will be fulfilling and satisfying.

Great book.

From the heartbreaking first chapter to the last I dont think I ever had a dry eye during this book.

This was one emotional powerhouse of a story. Beth's story was always a painful one. Her scars from her ex-husband's abuse still run deep even with the love of her husband and Dom, Master Nolan. Throw in two little boys who have a drug addicted mother and an abusive boyfriend, just keep that box of Kleenex handy.

I'm not going to go into great detail on the story but this was some great writing from Cherise – such emotional gut wrenching scene after scene. I should say after all this talk of emotions that there is a great HEA that also brought more tears to my eyes..

BONUS: we are introduced to two new Doms.. Cannot wait for their stories.

I know this series is about BDSM,but at the same time,it’s about so much more.
It’s about the lives of the people involved, about their needs and wants in every day life.
About what makes them happy, and yes BDSM helps them when they need that connection,as well as the closeness and understanding.
The dealing with issues, worries and emotions through BDSM helps not just the sub,but the Master, too.
But they all have a life outside of Shadowlands, and seeing them deal with everyday stuff is something i enjoy too.
Because that gives me the whole picture of who they are,and how they live their lives.
In this case,i was happy for Grant and Connor to find a warm and loving home with Beth and Nolan after all they’d gone through.
And i was also happy for Beth and Nolan to have these two sweet boys giving them the family they’d longed for.

Finally,Beth and Nolan have the life they deserved, except for one thing….
Something very important, and Beth is determined to do everything she can to give her Master what she thinks will make their life complete…..a baby.
Only,as it turns out, that bastard of a late husband destroyed that option, too…
So,seeing the two sweet boys at the Tomorrow is Mine domestic violence shelter, who could do with a loving mother, breaks her heart.
She gives them all the love and attention she can,as long as possible, and when Grant and Connor have to go home, back to a bad situation, she gives them her phone number in case they need her help.
And sadly, they do…..when their mother and her abusive boyfriend get into a fight, she lands in hospital.
Beth hurries over to get them to safety, and after Nolan joins them at the police station, they offer to take the boys in.

You’d think that certified social workers always have the children’s welfare at heart, but the one assigned to Grant and Connor only made things more difficult, simply because he didn’t like Beth and Nolan.
I wanted to kick Price several times throughout the story for being a pain in the butt.
For putting those sweet boys in bad situation after bad situation without any care what might happen to them.
How Beth and Nolan put up with him,i will never understand…..i would’ve gone to that bastard’s supervisor a lot sooner!

Once they had Grant and Connor at their house, they made sure to make them feel welcome and wanted.
And just when those sweet boys started to really enjoy being there, their mother died….leaving them yet again at the mercy of Price.
Because apparently, there was a grandmother….and what Beth had heard, she wasn’t the sweet version,to put it mildly.
But Price was adamant they go live with her, even when they obviously didn’t enjoy their time with her.
Finding out what he,and that bitch, had threatened them with, was sickening.
How she’d treated them was even worse…but finding the boys who had run as soon as possible, was their priority though….

Would they find them in time?
And would they be able to keep them once they did?
Not if it was up to Price…..but what about his superior?
If she wouldn’t help, would the Masters be able to pull some strings?

And Grant and Connor thought Beth and Nolan only wanted to take care of them for money…..and only until they found a baby girl…..because that’s what Price had told them.
But they were never going back to that evil grandmother, that’s for sure!

I'm going to be the odd one out, but I didn't care for this. My number one issue with authors is when they write a weak or whiny or self-doubting female. We dealt with Beth's issue in her first book. And now we revisit them again for a good portion of the book.

WHY?!?!?!?!??! I just don't understand why she had to have so much self-doubt. She already pretty much knew she wouldn't be able to have children of her own. I get this is devastating and Nolan still loves her, but yet Beth goes on and on about how he deserves this. Then you add Alyssa to the table and here we go again with all the insecurities. ARGH!!!!!

In saying all of that, I still liked what happened with Grant and Connor and I had a few tears with what they went through. Nolan and Beth are perfect for them as they are for them.

Cherise Sinclair didn’t say much about who the next couple would be in this book so I was a little surprised when I learned it was going to be about a couple we’ve already met before. We first meet Beth and Master Nolan in BREAKING FREE, which happens to be one of my favorite books in the series. If you’ve read that book when you know that Beth’s sadistic ex-husband abused her to the point that she can no longer bear children. It’s a crushing reality for Beth and one that makes her feel insecure and inadequate. Beth does all she can, including taking hormones to try and help her conceive, but the doctors have said that she won’t ever be able to carry to term.

As you can expect, this book is loaded with emotion. There were countless times in this book when I was on the verge of tears. To really get the full experience of this book, however, I would suggest reading BREAKING FREE beforehand. There you’ll see how they meet and fall in love, but more importantly, you’ll get the details on Beth’s past.

Now, she is a landscape designer, but she also spends some of her time volunteering at a domestic violence shelter. There she becomes close to two kids in particular, Grant and Connor, and when the rest of her world is falling apart, so is theirs. Fate brings them together, and what Cherise Sinclair does with this story is truly inspiring. PROTECTING HIS OWN is definitely a new favorite in the series.

In addition to delivering an emotional story, Sinclair also lays down the foundation for two more Doms. The two men are cousins and Sinclair has intrigued me because apparently they like to co-top. Oh my, I cannot wait to read that!

And the last thing I want to talk about is the writing. I think Sinclair absolutely nails this one. I fell in love with the idea of this book, but the execution really is flawless. This book actually reminds me a lot of THE BEAST by J.R. Ward, so if you are a fan of both these series and enjoyed the latest installment to the BDB, I guarantee you’ll also love this one.

PROTECTING HIS OWN certainly exceeded my expectations. Wrought with emotion and passion, this story proves why Cherise Sinclair is one of the premier authors of the BDSM Erotic Romance genre.

This was probably one of the more difficult books I've read on a personal level. I know just how hard it is going through fertility issues and that it's a subject you don't often see addressed in romance. I know, who wants to see a relationship struggle like that, but it's real and honest that not everyone can so easily have children when they choose or not choose. I can actually only think of two other instances where I've seen this addressed, but I digress...

Protecting His Own was heartbreaking at times, no question about that, but it was also uplifting in ways that I've come to expect from Cherise's writing. She always ensures that her characters have the love and support of the other Doms and subs from the Shadowlands, and that despite great adversity that her characters can find a way to make things work for them even if it isn't exactly in the ways they expect. I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried buckets for Beth and Nolan, because I can more than relate to how they feel as far as infertility goes. But, I also cried because I know that Beth has already had to endure so much in her life, and the thought of adding infertility to it physically pained me. I think this is what sets Sinclair apart from other BDSM authors though. Her books are character driven. It isn't so much about the BDSM scenes and the suspense, as it is about the character going through it and the emotions involved. I've seen this series progress into something that is truly wonderful to read, even through the tears, and I admire Cherise's ability to consistently make this series better with each new release. Protecting His Own was another quality installment to this series, and I'm really looking forward to the next book with Uzuri and finally figuring her out.

Ahhhh Nolanman...how I've missed you! It was so FANTASTIC to visit Nolan, Beth, and the rest of the Shadowland's crew. This was a very tough, but very beautiful story. One that gives off tons of love and so much hope. Revisiting the Shadowlands is like coming home.

Shadow's review posted at Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

For the first time, we have a followup book entirely about a couple we have already met in Masters of the Shadowlands. We first met Beth and Nolan in Breaking Free, when Beth was on the run from her sadistic husband and unable to submit to any of the gentle doms she chose as partners. Master Z gave her to Master Nolan to see if he could reach the wary sub. Not only do they connect, but Nolan ensures her safety by killing her husband to save Beth's life. In later books, we find they have married, and that Beth cannot have children due to the damage done to her by her ex.
In this book, Beth finally gives up the hope she can give Nolan a baby of his own, and they agree to adopt a baby girl.

But fate has other plans for the stern Dom and his tenderhearted submissive. Beth volunteers at a local shelter for battered women, one she saved by donating funds she inherited from her late husband. Two of the boys at the shelter have touched her heart, and she is appalled to find out their mother is taking them back to her abusive boyfriend-and her life of drugs. She tells the boys to call her if they need her. When their mother is attacked by her dealer and sent to the hospital, Grant and Connor make that call.

Beth and Nolan take the boys in and after their mother dies, quickly realize that what they want are these two little guys, not a baby girl. But a fanatic grandmother, a vindictive social worker and the abusive boyfriend all stand in their way. That doesn't deter the couple -or their friends from the Shadowlands BDSM club. Are Beth and Nolan going to be able to create the family they want?
Not only do we get to meet some of the familiar faces from the club, we get the set up for the next book, which will feature the prankster Uzuri.

This was a delightful addition to the Shadlowlands series, with characters you want to hang with, a plot that keeps you turning the pages, and lots of hot sex. We get to see Master Nolan do a mummification scene with Beth. While Cherise Sinclair makes it seem normal, I have to admit, as someone with claustrophobia, it freaked me out a bit.

In spite of that, this is a totally feel good book, one that makes you want to join the action and hug Grant and Connor yourself. As always Cherise Sinclair takes you through the emotional wringer and then cuddles you like a well used submissive.

I've loved pretty much all of the Cherise Sinclair books I've read, so naturally I was excited when this book was released, despite it being about an existing couple, instead of a new dom and sub. Sinclair had previously blogged about her troubles with matching Uzuri to a dom anyway, and had gone with this story instead for now. So I was willing to give it a try.
I won't say this story was bad. But I think it was an example of the worst parts of Sinclair's writing style. While I love the relationships she builds, and the community of characters she's created at the Shadowlands, I don't love the weak 'villains' she creates. Their one dimensional evil is generally the weak link in her stories--people are malicious for next-to-no reason, for example. This story had the misfortune of having FOUR of these pointlessly evil characters, with at best nominal reasons for evil. You had two meth addicts, a religious fanatic, and an unreasonably (and unprofessionally) hostile social worker. I realize that the story needed these roles to move forward, but they were so cartoonish and one dimensional that they really distracted me from the story. It was difficult to believe that people like this existed.
That was the weak part. Beth and Nolan have a nice relationships, though--flawed but strong and caring. and the two little boys were sweet and pretty believable in their thought processes and motivations. I enjoyed their interactions, and was cheering for their happily-ever-after. And I like the two new doms, although I really wish they were separate doms, not c0-doms. I have no problem with that arrangement. I just don't enjoy reading about it. They seem to be earmarked for Uzuri, which means I might not be reading her story--also kinda disappointing.
In general, this was a disappointment, not terrible, but not the caliber I expect from Cherise Sinclair. I understood why there was less sexy time in this story--the focus was on the relationships built with the boys. I didn't mind that. But so much else felt shallow and cartoonish in its development that it distracted me. I'm hoping future books will be back to normal. I am certainly not giving up yet.

Well, that was pretty darn perfect! It was packed with emotion, without losing any of the steam. What took me so long to read it?!

Nolan and Beth, the couple from Breaking Free, are back in this book. As they work to expand their family, they take in two boys from the shelter Beth volunteers at when their mother is in the hospital. As foster parents, they know the situation is temporary, but try to give the boys everything they can for that short time. We come to care for the boys as much at Nolan and Beth do and that was a big part of the emotional impact of this book. Grant and Connor had been through so much in their short lives, seeing them blossom and grow only to be thrust back into a bad situation was heartbreaking! Of course all ends well and I couldn't have been happier! I can't wait to see what is coming next in this series!

reread 2022

I enjoyed the return to Beth and Nolan. It was hard to see she was still struggling with her past but also honest. Things are miraculously fixed they take work.
I loved her connection with the boys and how good Nolan was them as well.

Good

4 stars ⭐️

Good return to Beth and Master Nolan. This one tugged at my heart strings as Beth tried to come to terms with her inability to have kids. I loved how Nolan worked with her to bolster her confidence and return her to the Beth he loved.

I enjoyed the kids too. Grant and Connor were nice addition and it was lovely to see how both Beth and Nolan reacted and treated the two boys.

There were a number of cliches used in this one to give the story the angst it needed, from the pushy overbearing master stealing sub, and the bad family member to the bad inept social worker, but I took these in stride and just kept going. It didn’t really take away from my enjoyment

LOVED IT!

I am an exclusive menage romances reviewer but I have a couple of authors that no matter the genre they write, I know without a single doubt in my mind that I will like it, if not love it.

Protecting His Own goes to the LOVE IT category. no question asked.

It is a beautiful family story with BDSM lifestyle. This couple is not new in the series and I guess it is their happily ever after story.

You will fall in love with the kids. And I promise you that you will use tissues a couple of times.

Well done Mrs Sinclair. I loved your story from beginning to the end and I would not change one single thing!!!

Now... cannot wait to read her next story of this series and my gut says two favorite of mine: menage and BDSM!!

I adore the Shadowland series, but I don't feel that this is as sharp as some of the others. Granted to a certain extent the tension is gone because Beth and Nolan are an established couple now, but the real problem is it was too sweet.

BDSM Ms. Sinclair! Yes, there are some club scenes, but the primary focus is on Beth's need/desire for children and how two moppets end up fulfilling that need for Beth and Nolan. It was just a little too schmaltzy and sweet for me. Okay, and not enough Master Z. Yummm. One nice thing is pretty much all the bad people get it good.

Nice set up for the next one which sounds very good.

I finally got around and bought the audiobook.
I’ve read Nolan and Beth’s (or should I say Connor and Grant’s) story before and this is the first time I listened.

As usual Noah Michael Levine and Erin DeWard are excellent.

I love how this book shows a Ds relationship developing and changing. I would have liked for both Nolan and Beth to open up about their problems and insecurities a bit fast, but hey even fictional characters are people, right.

I adored the boys and how the entire Shadowlands’ crew took them in their protective and loving circle.

And I’m very pleased with the insight in Detective Max Drago, but because I know what’s coming next (Uzuri, you’d better hide!)

This is the first book in the Masters of the Shadowlands series that's a follow up to a previous book. Nolan and Beth were first introduced in Breaking Free. Now this book follows up their relationship, as they deal with infertility (due to damage caused by Beth's abusive first husband) and adoption. Beth and Nolan are getting ready to adopt, and they're thinking about a baby girl, but when two boys they know from their volunteer work at the homeless shelter are in trouble, they become their foster parents, and eventually adopt them.

I'd love to see follow up books on all of the Shadowlands couples, since they're complex and interesting characters with intriguing relationship dynamics. From that perspective, the book delivers. Nolan and Beth are at a very different place in their relationship now, but their challenges only make their love stronger. The BDSM scenes are present in the book, but they take a backseat to the emotional and psychological aspects of the characters as they deal with difficult issues like infertility and adoption. The "villains" of the story (especially the crappy social worker) are one dimensional and could use more development, but otherwise, this is a really great book.

I’ve missed reading this series, and I didn’t realise how much until I started this book. These Masters of the Shadowlands are something special.
Nolan & Beth King were a roller coaster ride the first time around, and this read is no less full of feels.
I love when a series with as many titles as this one goes back and gives us another glimpse into the lives of couples we’ve fallen in love with previously, and does it so very well. Yes, sir.

Beth and Nolan where two characters I loved the most; starting when Cherise originally wrote about them in Breaking Free.  I was thrilled that they were getting a second story. I think out of all of the characters, Beth has stuck with me the most.  She was so brave, and to now see her a few years later, living a life we weren’t sure she would ever have, is AMAZING.  Yet, at the same time old scars still tend to rear their ugly head; Nolan being the perfect Dom for Beth, knows how to work things out and silence the demons in her head.

Cherise writes such beautiful relationships, it’s hard not to envy these them, and wish for the closeness her couples have.  Most men are completely clueless to a woman’s emotional needs, my husband included; and have to be given step by step instructions.  Cherise writes the perfect mind reading Doms, if only real life was so simple.  Sigh.

Protecting His Own is such a beautiful story adding a wonderful conclusion to Beth and Nolan’s story. At the same time, it touches on hard issues so heartbreaking, I was in tears. It also has Cherise’s standard erotic flair, and new BDSM scene I have come to look forward to in every book.  Let’s not forget the introduction of the new Masters to the Shadowlands.

There was nothing about this story I didn’t love and I wouldn’t be opposed to reading more books about past characters; I love visiting old friends.  It was truly perfect and I am giving it 5 Huge Boundless Stars.....Sara

A heartwarming addition to the series. I especially enjoyed reading this book since Master Nolan is one of my favorite Masters. Hell, who am I kidding?! I LOVE EACH AND EVERY SHADOWLANDS MASTER! I love how far this series has come and I continue to love each addition to the series.

I can't wait to read Uzuri's book!

Perfection

A perfect addition to the Shadowlands series. Heartbreakingly heartwarming. From beginning to end I loved this story. Master Nolan is so good at not letting problems build and getting everything out in the open. Beth tries to internalize but realizes when she needs help.

Sometimes revisiting couples can change how a reader feels about them but I feel they have grown but stayed the same. A great glimpse at the past couples and how everyone is there to help one another it's nice to read.

Simply perfect.

Awesome new addition to Cherise Sinclair's Shadowlands series. We revisit Nolan and Beth (who we first met in Breaking Free) as they become foster parents to two young boys who have pretty much been screwed over by the system. It's about damn time they caught a break, and Beth and Nolanman are it. At turns heartbreaking and heartwarming, Protecting His Own kept me crying my eyes out! But don't worry, it all works out okay. (I did mention the heartwarming part, didn't I?)
