About a boy who isn’t quite normal and doesn’t see himself as a human being, but is taught differently as he finds out about the world’s secrets. Though not everyone is happy about his existence.
This is inteded to evolve into a full blown space opera with elements of magic thrown into it.
There were some interesting ideas there, but the writing style didn't appeal to me and parts of the premise and plot felt a little overblown.
First of all, this book could use an editor. I found multiple typos, faulty grammar and even wrong vocabulary. The pacing was a little awkward, with several large time skips at times even when you'd expect in-depth descriptions of major events that kinda just happen off screen. There's also this undercurrent of sexism, homophobia and sexual wish fulfilment. While the sex scenes were mostly implied to happen off screen, there was one instance where the main character was used for sex (with nothing actually being written out, which made it a tad awkward) during a dialogue and the consent was a little questionable. Felt a lot like a sexual fantasy of the author.
What almost made me stop was when the main character's grandmother for a second assumes/fears her grandson may be gay, which is apparently way worse than him having just killed a bunch of people. She's in distress, thinking she had failed her grandson in his upbringing and education. He of course isn't gay, perish the thought.
From the way he's described our MC might be somewhere on the autism spectrum, though he might just as well simply be a sociopath. His intellect is a little overblown, apparently enabling him to make revolutionary inventions in fields he has little experience in at the age of 6/10. Sure he's technically older, but still. He does require 16 years to become a pilot. He's also a slightly perverted nerd, making references to current popular culture, even though it's the year 2200+ or something. It's all a bit annoying.
Ultimately I simply lost interest. It was somewhat entertaining and funny at times, but it really wasn't for me.
There is actually a subtle realism to this setting that I really like, even though the characters were rather one dimensional. This story takes place in the distant past galaxies away from the universe of "A Tale of G.O.D.
Great book! This is the second book I've read by Andur and both were fantastic (the other was Beyond). It's so cool that the author self publishes his books for free. The quality of his work is top notch. All it needs is a good editor, but considering he is self publishing the books are just fine as is. Keep up the great work!
