More Yokai friends have been made. He gets up to 36 tokens with them in this volume. Lots of Yokai death in this one. They get quite violent with each other. And over nothing in most chapters! I liked seeing Nate call on others besides just Jabanyan (even if by mistake).

I hated the A Pelican yokai. The mockery of America actually reached offensive levels with what goes on here. Talk about giving Americans a bad rep. Very degrading. And badly stereo-typical. I don't know of anyone who acts/dresses they way it is portrayed. Ugh!

We are also introduced to "Classic" Yokai witch was cool to learn about the original Yokais.

I was feeling pretty great right before I was going to write this review, but then I remembered that I still have thirteen more reviews to write after this one and now I feel very tired. "Well you could just not write reviews for them or you could just stop reading them yadayada blah blah blah-" NO I HAVE COMMITED TO THIS AND I! WILL! SEE! IT! THROUGH!

This book definitely threw things up a bit by introducing some new types of Yo-kai as well as showing our first Yo-kai evolution. I wasn't aware that Yo-kai could evolve, and now it shakes things up a bit. Things have already been shaken up quite a bit, and every volume adds something new to the world of Yo-kai. This was another really fun addition to the series, and I am enjoying myself with these. I didn't know I would like the series as much as I do, and the whole thing has really grown on me since I read the first book.

I also found another really cute Jibanyan picture that I want to share! (Even though no one reads my reviews, so I'll be the only person who sees this)

Here's my 10 thoughts and comments about the volume:

1. Frostina is my love, and she's hands down my favorite Yo-kai in this book. She isn't as amazing as Noko, but she is definitely up there. She's cute, her design is amazing, and she's awkward and constantly freaking out about everything, just like me. She was so ashamed of her ice breath, but she could just become friends with Blazion and then her problems would be solved.

2. Every single chapter in the past books always mentioned which Yo-kai you would meet, but I noticed that chapters 36 and 27 did not have the Yo-kai on the chapter's title page. It's an odd thing to bring up and complain about, but I sat there and stood at the picture of Jibanyan as a balloon and my brain went fuzzy.

3. Timidevil reminds me of a cross between a Zora from (here we go again) The Legend of Zelda games, specifically Muzu, and Dobby. Dobby has those floppy ears and a really timid personality, and Muzu has those pointed thingies on his head while also slouching around all the time.

4. I do really like the whole idea of Yo-kai being able to evolve and devolve, but I am a bit confused on how it works. Can only certain Yo-kai evolve? I assume there's also specific things that cause them to evolve, but I'm really surprised that Nate never made another Yo-kai evolve, and he had befriended almost 30 of them at that point. So with Timidevil, he evolved to Beelzebold when he learned to be bold. So why did someone like Suspicioni not evolve when he learned to not be suspicious?

5. In chapter 37 we saw Nate drop his armful of Yo-kai, and it made we wonder where Nate keeps all of his Yo-kai medals. There's no way they could all fit in his pocket. Maybe he only carries around a few on normal days, and that's why he always calls Jibanyan- not because that's who he wants, but because he's one of the few Yo-kais whose medal he has. But then that makes me think a bit more: how does Nate keep everyone's names straight and how does he remember them. Does he sit in his bedroom with all of his medals out and ask Whisper to quiz him?

6. Faysoff is great and all, but I can't help but imagine him trying to fight Nate and his gang, but he makes them stop every 30 seconds to draw a new face.

7. What was it with this volume being so violent. I said the same thing in my review for the last book, but it still can be said for this book. We had two chapters back-to-back where one of our friends almost died, but then it makes me question if Yo-kai can die. We've seen Yo-kai essentially die a million times, but they never really die. I don't know if it's because Yo-kai are immortal, or if in this world everyone has a million lives. Another minor detail that I couldn't fit into any other comment, but there was also another one of those Yo-kai collages that included Yo-kais that we hadn't met yet, just like with the last volume.

8. I like Happycane a lot, partly because he is sweetheart who would be very useful to have around, but the main reason I love him is because he looks like Smoliv from Pokémon.

9. I love how in the first chapter of the book we saw Jibanyan and Nate try to thaw out Whisper after Frostina accidentally froze him, and because Nate isn't friends with Blazion he couldn't call him. However, Jibanyan's tail is literally made of fire, so why couldn't he have used that to unfreeze Whisper?

10. I saved the best thing for last, and that is Apelican. I saw other reviews for this volume that expressed that the reader felt offended by the character, but I personally thought it was hilarious. I think if they tried to do something like this for almost any other country it would come off as really offensive, but I liked this. It wasn't a true representation of America, obviously, but rather one shaped by media. You have the cowboy clothes (which looked awesome), stars and stripes everywhere, and the actual fitting part of the character, a gun. Not even a gun like what Cupistol used in the last book, but an actual gun that apparently can shoot actual bullets. The two things I am confused about is how Whisper and Nate were able to shake off their "Americanization" so quickly, and I'm also confused about why a pelican was chosen as the animal that influenced the Yo-kai. You would think that a bald eagle or even a turkey would be more appropriate, but somehow a pelican was chosen for the job. Maybe it's supposed to be stupid and crazy on purpose and there isn't a reason behind him being a pelican.

What a story, what a book, and what a ride this was. This was a fun book, but I'm really looking forward to the next book because we have a watermelon Jibanyan on the cover! I love Jibanyan and I'm really happy that we got to see some of our favorite Jibanyan variations, but I'm really really really really really excited for watermelon Jibanyan, whom I have been patiently waiting to meet. Maybe I'll grow to love him more than normal Jibanyan, and maybe even more than Queen Frostine I mean Frostina, but nothing will ever top Noko.

Yo-Kai Watch, Vol. 5 Review

Fun little manga targeted at children, but it's still one of my favorite franchises. Sadly it didn't gain popularity because it unfairly got labeled as a Pokemon rip-off, but it deserves some love as a franchise that is not a rip-off, but can stand on it's own.

Definitely worth a read if you love mythology- especially Japanese, and enjoy a little juvenile humor once in a while.

Good book! Lots of stuff happened in the book. Like the introduction of classic Yo-Kai, which I thought was pretty cool. The American Yo-Kai was very, well, unique. I mean you don’t see a country Yo-Kai in every book. I don’t think it was too stereotypical but that’s just my thoughts. I mean sure no Americans ACTUALLY do or dress like that but it’s just a joke and it’s nothing to get worked up about. Yeah but over all, the book was pretty good.

This is such a random comic. This volume consists of 10 chapter, and in each we're introduced to a new yokai. The stories are funny and silly. It is interesting to see the classic yokai, we were introduced to several this volume. If you're looking for a quick, silly read you won't be disappointed.

Five-star rating still. They slapped some classic yo-kai in there as well! Also this is a bit offensive since Apelican makes you "super American" and i am American! >:( Also its still pretty cool but when so-sorree choked Jibanyan, it made me cringe. Also, try adding some yo-kai from the wicked tribe. (The wicked tribe is something from the future yo-kai watch games and stuff. Also i am commenting on this from way in the future, even though i read this way earlier.) Also i really love this book.

Yokai Watch, what happened? The cleverness of the pictures has faded. The only time I laughed when reading this book was the impression of Jibanyan's body from inside the mouth of another Yokai. Feels much more episodic and rushed than the previous volumes. I sung the praises of this series when I read the first two volumes and this one was so very disappointing. Cheap "jokes" with no surprises.
