Packed with expert advice from former Olympian Jeff Galloway and his wife Barbara, this book deals with everything from how to get started and keep motivated, to the process of fat deposition and burning. With its practical approach it will be perfect for women with a busy schedule.
This book is definitely meant for women who are at the very beginning of their commitment to fitness. There is some great info for those who are new to exercise and healthy eating and the book provides a few success stories for motivation. This book is not for those readers who already regularly exercise.
This came through the book drop with a Marathon 101 "FAQ" style book that, alas, is on hold for someone else, so I could only flip through that one. I laughed out loud when the writer said when he got tired and burnt out during a race, he visualized a rubber band going from himself to the next guys *neck* and dragging the other guy back to him. So that'll go on my to-read list.
Anyway, first, to clarify, this is not just about running, it's about weight loss (in general) for women (specifically).
It is written by (despite the tags up there) a husband and wife duo, and addresses some of the problems women encounter with long workouts. The advice on sports bras alone I think is worth the checkout from the library. My perception of exercise changed dramatically when the girls weren't being jostled around like serfs in a cart on the way to market day (Moving Comfort brand, by the way).
Their goal is to gently nudge anyone looking to lose weight back onto the right path: a healthy diet and exercise, and the right exercise. Their claim (which I agree with) is that fat burning is not achieved by a hard workout, but a longer, steady workout.
I have the impression of reading more of a technical manual here than a normal diet book. I like that. Less extra chat, more useful information. Good stuff. It's a quick read. I'd be finished already if I didn't manage to fall asleep ON the book halfway through. ;)
*edit - finished. Definitely worth a look through. It's a book that's easy to flip here and there and get what you want from it. I like the idea of walk breaks to get more mileage & I'll have to give the extra time a try to see how that works out.
This book has been on my shelf for years. I would thumb through it for specific reasons, but just read it all of the way through. Now I feel prepared to run/walk injury free. Lots of good advice and 26 week training plan.
This was not exactly what I expected. So much of the book focuses on getting started on gentle walking and other gentle exercise that I was disappointed when it hardly got to the running part. I wanted more science and less motivational fluff. So I'm trying a regular Galloway running book and finding more of what I had hoped for in here. Oh well...
I actually didn't finish this book. It was information I'd heard before and a food plan I didn't feel like following. I had only taken it of the library because none of his other books were available. I think I'll try one of his other volumes instead.
Quite a lot of good and helpful information. However, much of the advice/information I was already aware of, and there was a little too much repetition throughout the book.
was expecting more from this book. this is for the serious beginner. book states obvious things anyone that has worked out knows. seems biased as well. did not enjoy and didn't care to finish it.
