This book is apparently the fourth in a series, and I haven't read the first three. However, that didn't affect my enjoyment of the story - it worked well as a standalone, although it was clear the was a history with each of the couples. I enjoyed the other characters and will probably go back and read the first three.
This was a good, well written, second chance, small town story. It had all the requisite features: the couple meant for each other meet again many years after breaking up due to unfortunate circumstances, a small scenic town, meddlesome townspeople and gossips, and a hoard of well-meaning relatives. It has a town square and a diner where everyone meets. And a lot of baked goods. There's an ex- boyfriend who shows up, and in a delightful twist, our hero, Ben, the town doc, has a female gay best friend.
The thing that sets this book apart from most books with this theme is the inclusion of some environmental issues that help drive the plot, as well as the greedy businessman who is also the mayor and happens to be Ben's father. There's also a Hatfields and McCoys type family rivalry, and Kline's history teaching in underdeveloped countries that included a horrific stint in a prison,
So, while this follows a traditional theme, there are a plethora of variations that make this story fresh and interesting. It is well written and edited, moves at a good pace, and has enough suspense to keep the pages turning. And the opening scene is one of the best I've read!
Subjectively, while I enjoyed the book, I just didn't really like the main characters. I couldn't quite figure Kline out. The author laid out very explicitly what her issues were - she just left me cold for some reason, and as I have said, that is completely subjective. Could have that I was in a cynical mood when reading it. I also never quite got why Ben was so anxious to reestablish a relationship with her. And the reason they separated initially seemed...just odd. I couldn't buy it. But this is obviously a good story well told, and I expect most people will have a different reaction than I. I would recommend it to anyone who likes this theme and would enjoy a fresh take on it. And as noted above, I did enjoy some of the other couples and will likely read the first books in the series.
