Plot and Story Line
Her Rogue Alpha is the newest release in the X Ops Series. Now i read this book last night in one sitting and I just LOVED this book so much. There was so many redeeming qualities to this romance and some thrills that keeps you on edge. I have been watching this pair ever since we were introduced to them a couple of books ago and I have anxiously awaiting for their book and it was so worth the wait. Paige Tyler has done a brilliant job with this series, and I really loved seeing where Tyler has taken us with this series. We do get some interesting events happen that start to reveal certain things that have been building slowly through the series. What was most fun was the adventure that Jayson and Layla have especially in helping some innocent teens. They really get to a point where they rely on each other for survival and doing the right thing. We see how much pride can get in the way of true love, and we see how Jayson and Layla learn some important lessons that bring them so much closer than ever before. This is the part of the story I truly adored. Was seeing how their relationship just grows so much in just a few days when they face fears and overcome challenges together.
The Cover
GORGEOUS!! I just love these covers, and their pose is awesome here----intense yet sexy too and I adore the purple theme.

I absolutely love this series (as well as Paige Tyler's SWAT series), I am always excited when there is a new book release, Her Rogue Alpha was no exception!

I loved that this story was about Jason, his background in previous books always held me so when I realised this was his story, I was ecstatic and the book paid off! The book was, as always, exciting, sexy and an amazing read. Paige Tyler is an amazing author that draws me in with every story - my imagination is 'crap' so when I enjoy a book, it simply means the author writes with a clarity and I can 'see' the words in my mind.

Another great story which leaves me wanting more, I am eager to know what will happen with Thorn, those who have read this series will know exactly what I mean!

Highly recommended!

How many of us find that forever love, the one that lasts through thick and thin and even the physical and emotional battle scars of war. Jayson can’t believe that Layla would so willingly stand by his side after he was bombed, broken and discharged for the Special Forces. Layla, a feline shifter knows her heart belongs to one of the finest men she has ever met, but how does she convince him she is there for the long haul?

Desperate to be a “normal” man again, Jayson submits to an experimental drug that will repair the damage to his body and give him shifter capabilities, but will it? It could kill him, but if it works, he will be worthy of Layla and can go back to the only work he has ever known, military black ops. How sad he has no idea that Layla loves him from the inside out.

When Jayson is sent on a supposedly easy mission, everything that could go wrong does and it’s Layla who risks everything for the man she loves. If they live, will they finally find their happily ever after?

Her Rogue Alpha by Paige Tyler may be one of my favorites so far! Two people, struggling with their hearts, one of them struggling with their pride and broken body. Ms. Tyler has created two REAL heroes, not for their military achievements, but for the strength of their hearts and willingness to do anything for each other. Passion exists in the eye of the storm of danger they are in, but it’s in that passion their strengths will be amplified.

A wonderful, sensual romance about life, love and the meaning of being a hero against the odds of survival.

Her Rogue Alpha is the fifth book in Paige Tyler’s X-Ops series, combining military and government forces special operation missions with paranormal elements, specifically characters that are shifters or genetically enhanced hybrids. The combination of tight, action packed sequences with the skills of paranormal heroes and heroines make for some entertaining stories. I read and enjoyed book four of the series, Her Fierce Warrior and I’ve also read two of the author’s SWAT team stories that are built along the same lines, with wolf shifters who work for a special unit of the police force. Each story can be read as a standalone (though with a continuing story arc through the series). The romantic setup for this story is slightly different, in that Jayson and Layla are already established as a couple at the start. But there is trouble in paradise.

Jayson’s last military mission was a cock-up. Ambushed while approaching an innocent looking goat farm in Afghanistan with his team, he suffered serious back injuries that resulted in a discharge from the military and a pretty solid case of PTSD. His girlfriend Layla is supportive of him and hopes to help him adjust to all the changes in his life, but Jayson can’t avoid the belief that she’s not going to stick around with an invalid like him, especially with his depression always at the forefront. He’s got a job on the firing range working for the Department of Covert Operations (DCO), but it’s a gimme job, and he knows it. When the Deputy Director offers him a chance at a new and improved serum that would give him hybrid capabilities of enhanced senses while healing his back injury, Jayson is tempted. But Layla is horrified by the notion, knowing previous participants in the last study are still dealing with the side effects. Heedless of her warning, Jayson agrees to be injected with the serum and is sent on a rescue mission to the Ukraine to test his new capabilities, with Layla in swift pursuit. Meanwhile, back home in Washington, a thief has stolen property belonging to Thorn, a former senator and current member of the DCO committee. Thorn is under investigation over illegal activities related to the hybrid program run by the DCO. Layla’s sister Ivy and her partner Landon have been providing surveillance of Thorn’s home for the Department of Homeland Security and witness the theft. Thorn will stop at nothing to get his property back and Ivy and Landon must work in concert with Hayes, the local police officer assigned to the case to find the missing items. Once again, the operatives of the DCO have their hands full, both at home and abroad.

Jayson is fully engaged in his quest to find a missing teenager when Layla catches up to him. They soon discover the mission is much more complicated than either expected. The area of the Ukraine they are in is fictional and while there is some lip service given to the current political situation between Russia and the Ukraine, it should be taken with a grain of literary salt. The Russians are the bad guys naturally, and there are lots of action packed scenes as Jayson and Layla work their way across the countryside.

There is, however, a distinct lack of sexual/romantic tension in the story. This is rather surprising, given that Layla and Jayson haven’t consummated their relationship yet because of his injuries. You’d think that the fact they’re an established couple who haven’t had sex would make for some super-steamy chemistry but somehow this isn’t the case. We DO get some sexy scenes as they finally connect physically and emotionally during the mission, but it’s due to Jayson’s renewed confidence more than any sexual tension between them. His personal difficulties – both mental and physical – drive his character development and I like how the author delves into his PTSD and the subsequent revelations that help him deal with it. Layla provides the support and understanding Jayson needs while working through his issues and her empathetic nature makes her very likable. Along with her fighting abilities, she is a strong woman in all senses of the word.

While Jayson and Layla work together in the Ukraine, things at home seem equally unstable. We quickly learn that the thief who stole two items (a large diamond and a mystery article) from Thorn is herself a shifter. She has a well-established jewelry shop and has taken to a little breaking and entering on the side because, well, she’s bored. When her friend Rory, a fence and pawn shop owner, mentioned Thorn’s diamond to her in passing, she stole it on a whim, along with what else was in the safe. But the word is out that Thorn wants his property back and he proves his ruthlessness by getting rid of any known suspects. Dreya is on the run – but Ivy and Landon are on her tail. This is also an interesting and action packed subplot, but seems to not really fit with the rest of the plot, other than to have two storylines to switch back and forth and make the page count longer. It’s also left open-ended (while the other storyline in the Ukraine is complete), paving the way for the next story in the series, that appears will focus on Dreya and Hayes, the police officer. I’m probably going to have to pick that one up too, since I want to know what will happen with them (good work, Ms. Tyler). Her Rogue Alpha is light on romance but fits in well with the rest of the series and has some fun action packed scenes in a fast moving plot, providing an entertaining story.

I read this while I was coughing up a lung or six (yay, asthma! :P ) and it was just right - not so deep that I had trouble focusing (hey, you try focusing when you're low on oxygen!) but complex and interesting enough to hold my interest. And while the action was plentiful, it wasn't overly detailed, and it was the characters that really kept my interest. I wanted the various missions to succeed but more, I wanted the people to succeed and I wanted to know more about them. Being me, I didn't read any of the preceding books in this series; oh no, I jumped in with this one, book five. Now there were a few moments of confusion but for the most part, it worked just fine as a stand-alone. Having read the book, I now want to go round up the preceding books and catch up, and get to know everyone better. We met characters who clearly appeared in earlier books and/or had their starring moment already and I want to know their stories.

While this did work as a stand-alone, if you want the whole romance from beginning to end, you need to read earlier books. Which ones, I don't know, but Jayson and Layla are smack dab in the middle of a relationship when this book starts. In fact, the relationship is in trouble. Due to injuries he sustained on a military mission, Jayson's been sidelined and he's having a hard time adjusting. He feels inadequate in general and particularly unworthy of Layla. Neither one has yet said "I love you" to the other one nor have they had sex yet, despite being involved for about a year. I know, I just about fell over! No sex? That just doesn't happen in many romances and certainly not PNR ones! I liked it though, it was a refreshing change. Of course, this book is their HEA so it does happen and it was both sweet and hot and "are you effin crazy? You're in the middle of a war zone and oh yeah, anyone, like enemy soldiers, could walk in on you!" :D I did think that the resolution to their problems was a little too easy but I liked that Jayson wasn't a complete idiot, that he could admit what he'd done wrong and apologize for it.

Despite not being a complete idiot, Jayson was sometimes impulsive. He really didn't think before jumping at the chance to be a guinea pig for an experimental serum that had a high risk of killing him. 'I'm doing this for Layla because I love her so much! Even though it's almost guaranteed to kill me and all my friends say I shouldn't trust the guy offering it to me." Ooooookay, that makes perfect sense Jayson. Uh huh. Maybe you should retire; clearly, logical thinking is not your strong suit. To be fair, he was in a lot of pain and the serum promised not only to heal him but to give him extra powers. Assuming, you know, that it didn't kill him. Does it work? Uh, maybe? Certain events interfere with the serum's full potential and we're left with questions which presumably will be addressed in later books.

There are a couple of other story lines going on, not all of them directly connected to the main one of Jayson and Layla. That usually irritates me but I was so engrossed in that one seemingly irrelevant story line that it didn't bother me. It helped that it clearly sets up future plots while seemingly tying into current ones. And there was a character who I feel sure we'll see again. I sure hope so as I really liked her.

"Her Rogue Alpha" was a busy story, with lots going on. There are intrigues and conspiracies everywhere you turn, love and romance for several couples as well as familial love, betrayal, action, current events, shifters and science fiction, all stirred together into a story that kept me swiping the screen on my Kindle. I was occasionally confused, which was probably a blend of not having read previous books and my illness, but never so confused that I was lost. I liked her world and want to know more about the shifters and hybrids. I enjoyed the story and the people; I cared about them and want to spend more time with them. I'll definitely be checking my library for more in this series.

This was another great book from Paige Tyler. She sure knows how to write an exciting and passionate story that will get you hooked from the very first page.

I absolutely loved Jayson and Layla and how romantic it was that they risked so much for each other. Jayson wasn't exactly a broken warrior but he sure was walking closer to the edge and Layla was trying to save their relationship. But they both felt like they were losing each other. Then Jayson gets an offer he can't refuse. He risks taking the shifter hybrid serum so that he can get his life back and watch Layla's six out in the field. His decision causese some turmoil between them but Layla takse off after Jayson when she hears that he's been sent off on a dangerous mission with a partner who has it in for him. She catches up to Jayson and the two of them are drawn even closer as they end up working together when the mission goes FUBAR. They made a great team, which was what they both wanted, except there was a secret irony that Layla fears will destroy their newfound bond.

This exciting story had a high energy plot and incredible characters that easily pulled me into the story and made me feel like they were real. It was suspenseful with twist after twist and a very interesting side story. There was a mysterious cat burglar that I hope we see again soon and the bad guys set their eyes on the DOC. All around this book was entertaining from beginning to end. I can't wait for the next book in the X-Ops series. I give this one 4.5 flying stars !

This novel was a ‘holy smokes’ hind of intense right from the very beginning. Tyler takes off running and doesn’t stop until the entire plot wraps up. The plot is amazing yet frightening in the possibilities that it presents. The ‘what ifs’ are almost as entertaining as the extremely exciting plot that is developed. Tyler’s innovative storytelling had me hooked throughout.

The intricate plot that Tyler develops was taken to a higher level by the unforgettable cast that she’s created. Jayson and Layla were a complex couple when we first met them in an earlier novel in the series, but Tyler continues to develop them here for an even more hard hitting tale. Their pasts and presents collide in an action packed, adventure filled, danger riddled tale chalk full of romance and explosive chemistry. But for those joining the series here don’t worry, you get to know them well enough here to fall in love with the fantastic cast and the unforgettable world that they find themselves in.

Tyler writes the book on paranormal romantic suspense and does it with flair. This novel is a must read for those who enjoy the genre.

Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

Hot, fast-paced, paranormal romantic suspense!!!

Layla smiled through her tears, "If I'd known that all it would take to get us talking is a romantic getaway to a bombed-out part of Eastern Europe, I would have gotten Kendra to set it up a long time ago."
"Romantic, huh?" He smiled. "I like romantic."

HER ROGUE ALPHA by Paige Tyler is the fifth installment in the author's fantastic X-Ops series in which one covert operative has claws and the other is highly-trained and carries a gun. The series packs plenty of heat into exciting military/paranormal shifter romantic suspense. The X-OPS Series revolves around the missions of the super-secret Department of Covert Operations, the DCO, which operates out of Washington, DC, and the Department of Homeland Security.

This installment includes lots of action on different fronts and favorites from former books in the series play heavily. That said, HER ROGUE ALPHA could be read as a stand-alone, if that is your preference. Paige fills in any necessary background information so a newbie is never lost. However, you should know that the reader's enjoyment will be exponentially increased if the series has been read in order.

I'm so glad that former Army Special Forces Jayson Harmon and feline shifter and psychologist Layla Halliwell finally got their story! AND it certainly does not disappoint! As the story begins, we catch up with Jayson, who took a considerable load of shrapnel in his back in Afghanistan and is having major issues adjusting to being out of the Army and in figuring out what he's going to do with his life since being medically separated from duty. He has sunk so low that he cannot fathom why Layla would ever love and want to be with a broken man like him. Their relationship is teetering as, even though Layla really cares about him, she is tired of fighting with him, and he seems determined to push her away.

When Layla is sent away on a DCO mission, Jason realized that he could never be the one sitting at home waiting for his mate to return. He makes a terribly stupid decision... and, you'll have to pick up the book to find out what happens next!

Jayson's inferiority complex was maddening, but Layla was one determined mate! I wholeheartedly applauded her patience as I wanted to shake him! Once Jayson stopped feeling sorry for himself, I loved their chemistry and how well they synced both romantically and in action. These two have been supporting characters in the background for so long, their story satisfied all my longings for them. I've had a soft spot for Jayson as he struggled with his combat injuries and Layla has been there for the teams through thick and thin. Her own sister was vehemently against Layla becoming a DCO agent, but Layla stuck to her guns, and proved she can kick some a**! Paired with Jayson, they are super heroes!

Following please find a few of my favorite quotes from this read:

She remembered why he'd caught her eye the first time she'd seen him, at Ivy and Landon's wedding. He was absolutely gorgeous. Tall, with broad shoulders and well-muscled arms, he had dark-blond hair, piercing blue eyes, and a square jaw covered with just the perfect amount of stubble. Then there was his mouth... There were books written about lips that kissable.
---
"Can you make the salad while I fix the garlic bread?"
He flashed her a grin. "Babe, I live to make salad."
---
"There was nothing you could ever do that would make me walk away. My only fear was that you would be the one to leave without ever giving me a say in the matter."

Paige writes the most captivating stories. This story had passion, plenty of swoon-worthy moments, humor galore, and dangerous action scenes that will have you holding your seat and your breath. It's a page-turner, for sure!

I can't wait for the next installment, HER TRUE MATCH, coming next March which will feature feline shifter Dreya Clark and sexy detective Braden Hayes. Both of these characters were introduced in HER ROGUE ALPHA... and I just know that their story will be explosive! If you enjoy hot, fast-paced, paranormal romantic suspense, Paige's X-Ops series should be on your read-soon list!

ARC REVIEW

Paige Tyler's Book Five in her X-Ops series. Another great book for the series, like the others it had action, adventure, love. In the other books we met Jayson and Layla well they finally have a book of their own. Layla loving Jayson for exactly who he is and Jayson wanting to be a better man a worthy man for Layla.

When we last saw them, Jayson had just been offered a job as Quartermaster for the DCO and as promised Layla has started to train for field work. Jayson is in more and more pain every day and much to Layla's dismay he has befriended Dr. Dick. Dick has offered Jayson the chance to cure his pain by taking a new and improved Hybrid formula.

Now the Hybrid formula if you are not familiar with the story, started when the crazy scientist tried to make their own shifters, what they got were crazed, wild, and uncontrollable, until they stole some of Ivy's DNA (Ivy is Layla's older sister) and managed to make them less feral and more easily manipulated. But we learned from Tanner that the hybrids could control their feral. Now Dr. Dick is telling Jayson that they managed to create a formula that will give him all the benefits of shifters without any of the added aggression or sharp teeth and claws. Layla freaks when Jayson tells her he's thinking about it and they get in an argument. Layla gets a call that send her on her first mission and she has to leave Jayson. Dr. Dick also promised Jayson he could be Layla's partner so with that promise Jayson agrees. It it wasn't for the quick thinking of Dr. Zarina Jayson would be dead. Zarina is brilliant but unfortunately Dr. Dick has already sent him out on his first mission with a complete douche. When Layla gets back from her mission she quickly goes after him. Layla and Jayson are stuck in a war ridden Ukraine trying to rescue a diplomat's son and his girlfriend. Layla and Jayson finally have the heart to heart they needed to have all along and get their feelings out there.

Meanwhile stateside, Ivy and Landon are still trying to figure out what's going on with Thorn. Also the introduction to a new shifter a cat burgler, Dreya, who stole some very vital information right out from Thorn's personal safe. Thorn has his men killing any known thief that could have pulled this off which lands Dreya right at the feet of Ivy and Landon. Dreya's book is next and I am really looking forward to it.

Overall this was another winner for the X-Ops series. Love Jayson and Layla.

Review originally posted at RabidReads.com.

I really love this series by Paige Tyler. It features animal shifters, but ones that aren’t like what you normally see. For example, these shifters don’t shift into full animals. Mostly, they grow larger teeth and claws. They are all genetic, but there are people who are modifying the shifters DNA to transform humans into what they call “hybrids”. The problem is that most humans don’t live through the transformation and if they do, they are a bit crazy. The shifters in this book work for a secret government agency that is hidden within the Department of Homeland Security. Each shifter is paired with a human partner, usually ex-military. They are not allowed to have relationships, but they do. There are also some really bad guys who are supporting the hybrid research under the table. These same guys really dislike the shifters and think they should be put down.

In this book, we have Layla, who is a psychologist for DCO (Department of Covert Operations). She is also the little sister of the first heroine of the series, Ivy. They are both cat shifters. Layla met a guy at Ivy’s wedding to her partner, Landon (Landon was pulled from military duty to join this organization and partner with Ivy. Their wedding is a secret from DCO because it isn’t allowed). This guy was in the military with Landon until he was medically discharged. Jayson is very much the wounded warrior. He is in pain constantly and feels that his life is useless now that he can’t do the one thing he has lived his whole life for, being military where he felt was helping people. Layla agreed to field work if her boss would hire Jayson in some capacity at DCO. He is hired to run the firing range. Something he is very good at, but still not the same as being on the front lines. Layla and Jayson have been together for a while, but their relationship is moving farther apart instead of closer together. When Layla goes out on her first assignment, it makes things worse.

Okay, remember the bad guy I mentioned before (well, there is really more than one, but this guy is the worst of the bunch), convinces Jayson to try an experimental hybrid drug that could cure his pain and get him out in the field. He then immediately sends Jayson into a war torn Ukraine on a mission before they even see how he reacts to the serum. To add even more fuel onto this fire, they send him out with a human partner that doesn’t have a large amount of field experience. He does have some great kids in the area that help him out.

There is also another plot line in this story that follows Ivy and Landon as they try to catch a shifter that broke into the house of another not-nice DCO top level guy. He mentions that a large diamond was stolen. He doesn’t mention to Ivy and Landon that something else way more valuable was stolen. He will do anything to get it back. Thieves start dying, which sends up big red flags to Ivy and Landon.

This series continues to be action-packed. If you’re in the mood for a really good paranormal, romantic suspense, this is the series for you. I would recommend that you read the books in order. There are more details that are given out about the shifters, hybrids, DCO and more in each book. That information builds upon each story, so you will be missing out on some pieces if you skip a book. Plus, so far, I haven’t read a bad book in the series yet, so there’s no reason to skip one.

I love the blend of paranormal romance and suspense in this series. Each story draws the X-Ops team one step closer and sometimes two steps back from defeating their enemies, but the plots are engaging and the romances satisfying.

This is the fifth installment in the series and I would recommend reading them in order and including the novella because of the suspense plot threading through them all and the main characters sometimes overlapping from the previous book.

This one picks up the story of Layla and Jayson. Layla is Ivy's younger sister and has now just earned her mission-ready status. Unfortunately, that complicates an already strained relationship with Jayson. Jayson was once a special forces leader until his back was severely wounded from shrapnel. Now he is in constant pain and feeling useless. Jayson takes his bitterness out on Layla and knows he will lose her if he doesn't figure out how to be worthy of her. Layla loves Jayson fine just the way he is, even her cat nature side is attracted, but she doesn't know how much longer she can hang on while he pushes her away.

Into this situation, the slimy assistant director insinuates himself with Jayson and promises him a completely healthy body if he takes the untried new hybrid serum. Jayson is desperate. He is thrown into a mission to test him and it deteriorates fast in the war-torn Ukranian streets. Layla no sooner comes off her mission than she turns around and races to Jayson because of the unstable dangerous drug coursing through him.

Meanwhile, Ivy and Landon encounter a shifter jewel thief who unwittingly conducts a heist against the wrong guy and nabs more than a diamond when she cracks the safe. The hunt is on to find her and not all the hunters plan to leave her alive.

This one was pretty exciting and intense. I loved the individual story lines going on in this one. Layla and Jayson's story going on with this new mission on the home front for Ivy and Landon and a surprising new character. I hope we meet her again along with the intrepid police detective.
Very much action-driven, but the passion and suspense elements were blended in nicely.

I love the set up and world of this story. The author's special shifters are unique and I love that this is a military ops group. There is a camaraderie with this bunch and each new story carries several familiar faces that help each other out and form a tight group against those who are hurting and using people and the government for their own gain.

I also appreciate how each new couple even though they are always a shifter paired with a human have their own unique circumstances and conflicts to deal with. Jayson had to figure out that he had worth regardless of his physical ability and Layla had to experience her first mission to see that she could be a true operator and partner. She is a capable woman and I loved how her cat shifter nature helped her on her missions.

All in all, this was another engaging installment. Those who enjoy action-driven paranormal romantic suspense would most probably enjoy this series.

My thanks to Sourcebooks Casablanca for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Jayson needs his head smacked around a few times and then screwed back on right. He should be singing this modified version of the song to Layla.

"What'll you do when I get lonely
And nobody's waiting by my side?
I've been running and hiding much too long.
I know it's just mine foolish pride.
Layla, you've got me on my knees.
Layla, I'm begging, darling please.
Layla, darling won't you ease my worried mind."

That's right. Jayson, get on your knees and beg. This story is so frustrating because Jayson is a jerk to the woman who loves him. He ignores the caution from his friends and believes a bully liar. What is going on in his mind? Jayson's identity as a man let alone a contributing member of society is all based on his physical ability. His desperate need to be physically whole makes him stupid in the brain. Ms. Tyler does an excellent job of showing how a person can make terrible choices and become bitter when they lose a part of themselves. From a character perspective, Ms. Tyler definitely creates a decent anti-hero. Because make no mistakes, Jayson's only medal in my book is one for being the biggest jerk.

Layla on the other hand is a much suffering woman in love. The brutal emotional attacks Jayson throws at her makes a reader wonder why Layla still wants Jayson. It's not like he is great in the sack with his lackluster performance. He doesn't make her life easier. He does everything he can to push her away. Does she have no self-respect? Why does she continue to take this abuse? This part of the story bothered me.
The conflicts in this story are removed with a couple of predictable plot devices which allow this story to move forward. Ms. Tyler reveals a bit more about the different warring factions amidst the angsty love drama. About halfway through the book, the action picks up and Jayson becomes a "man" again. He starts to behave better and make up to Layla. Lucky for him, she is a sucker for his sweet words.

What I like about this book is how Jayson isn't perfect and he acts out based on how he feels. This realistic representation and showing how he's thinking and how he knows he is saying the wrong things is insightful. It shows a different perspective of someone who is hurting so much, they lash out at everyone else. Whilst this story could be deemed as an angry male taking it out on a much put upon female, it is more a story of hope, patience and fidelity. Layla is always faithful and never gave up hope. Jayson's faith may have been shaken but with patience and love, he comes around and finds hope again. I like this feel good happily ever after. This paranormal romance is recommended to those who like angst with their suspense.

Her Rogue Alpha by Paige Tyler is the 5th book in her X-Ops series. I am a fan of Paige Tyler and her wonderful exciting series (Swat & X-Ops). In Her Rogue Alpha, we have been waiting for Layla and Jayson’s story. For a brief refresher: Layla has loved Jason for awhile, but Jason did not feel worthy of her love, as he is a former soldier, who was badly injured in combat. In the beginning, we go back to the time when Jason lead his team in combat, and see how badly he was hurt protecting his team. Back to the present, with the help of his friends and Layla, he gets a job working for DCO, but not as a field agent. With Layla going on her first assignment as a field agent, Jayson worries about her.

Dick, one of the untrusted leaders of DCO offers Jayson a chance to be able to go back on the field, and to become Layla’s partner. All he has to do is take the upgraded hybrid serum, which Dick says will fix his injuries, not to mention giving him some hybrid powers. He accepts, despite knowing that both Layla and his friends tell him not to trust Dick, as it is a high risk that could kill him. He is then sent on a mission with a crooked agent to Russia to rescue a young son of a politician.

When Layla returns from her successful first mission, she learns about Jayson, and embarks secretly to Russia to help him. What follows is an exciting adventure to rescue the young man, his friends and a girlfriend against insurmountable odds. While on the mission, Jayson comes to terms with his love for Layla, and rises above his injuries to prove himself a capable warrior. Only Layla knows the truth that the serum didn’t work, but Jayson is still doing things he did not think he was capable of

On a side story, Ivy and Landon are working to find a missing diamond stolen from Thorn, another villain of this story. The key is the young woman who stole the diamond is a shifter, and they are determined to save her from Thorn’s attacks on all local thieves. This is a story I expect to be continued in the next book.

The romance between Layla and Jayson was very well done, and sweet. I loved watching them work together, and bond their relationship. Together, they will be a team for the future, and protect each other from whatever shenanigans Dick will try to pull on them. Saying too much more will be spoilers, but Her Rogue Alpha continues the trend of very exciting, intense and romantic stories. If you have not started this series, I suggest you do so. You will not be disappointed in anything written by Paige Tyler.

My Review:
I loved where the story of this book started. That first scene was so startling, but so important for understanding just how devastatingly bad Jayson was hurt. Wow.

And then the book jumps to 15 months later, where miraculously Jayson is still alive, although living in horrific pain every day. My heart hurt for him. I've dealt with back pain and cannot imagine the levels of pain that he is dealing with on a constant basis. It's pervasive when it's bad and could see how he could get so low and desperate for some relief.

Layla has only known Jayson since he was hurt. They met while he was recovering at Walter Reed...and he kind of hates that. She's never seen him when he wasn't crippled by pain, so he's willing to do about anything to change that, even risk his life. As a former special ops military dude, it's really hard to sit back and not act. To make matters worse, Layla just became an operative in DCO and is about to go out on her first mission where things could go bad. The soldier in Jayson wants to protect her, even though he knows she's highly trained. So while she's gone, he's offered everything he could want...to be whole and to be able to partner with Layla so he could ensure her safety. There's just one catch...it might kill him.

Overall this was another good installment in the X-Ops series. I wish more time had been spent on the issues that drove Jayson to take those extreme measures just in that I think it could have heightened the emotional impact. But as the book is written, it is one non-stop action adventure after another. I loved how Jayson threw himself into the mission despite the pain. The teenage story line in the war-torn Ukraine was also really interesting...I liked the two additional teens that really stood out in the story. I'd like to think they went on to find their own HEA with one another.

There's a secondary story line about a jewel thief that I found just as intriguing, and am excited that the shifter involved in that story will be in an upcoming book. I liked her and her no-fear attitude.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

Layla and Jayson have been 'teased' as a pairing throughout this series, though their introduction is a soft one: Paige Tyler doesn't do the whole pining-after-each-other rigmarole here and their first meeting and their (somewhat chaste) getting together take place off-screen, so to speak. But the time their book rolls around, they're a couple with obstacles to overcome and 'Her Rogue Alpha' is partially that.

Unfortunately, the book proved to be quite a disappointment. Perhaps the most glaring point was the split between Layla/Jayson's jaunt in Donetsk and a separate plot involving Ivy, Landon and a shifter thief. Set up more like a separate developing plots in an episode of a tv series, having this in print simply made it more distracting than engaging.

I was also left sceptically wondering whether a person with rather severe back injuries could do what Jayson did and continue to do some superhuman feats just because he'd believed he could. Whether the shifter hybrid serum worked or him or not wasn't clear - even the extent to which it worked was deliberately left out - but it felt as though Tyler wanted us to believe that Jayson would and could live with the pain in his back (while doing whatever he could do without a magic cure), exacerbating it on missions and still watch Layla's back like he used to be in the Special Forces.

I wished this could have been a more satisfying read - the potential was certainly there - but so much was set up in a way that had me alternating between frustration and incredulity that I found myself putting down the book and taking it up way too many times.

Her Rogue Alpha by Paige Tyler

Fifth in the X-Op series of shifters in a clandestine government agency taking down the bad guys. This is Jayson and Lalya's story.

As usual with this author, the story was a fast, easy read with lots of action, and sizzling sexual tension. Lots of explosions, gun battles, and romantic encounters. The story included characters from previous books in the larger scenes. It's fun to revisit with them.
This book is better read after other series books for the full back story of the intrigue and government twists along with the complex bad guys.

I wasn't sure I would like Jayson because he starts out at a very low point in his life. He pushes Lalya away. We know he's hurting and it's a good goal to want to team with her on missions, but it's not realistic. In the end, he's brave and shows his love to her.

Jayson’s attitude and behavior frustrated me somewhat in the beginning, but once Layla got through to him, I realized that was all part of the story. And boy, what a jam-packed story it was. There were ops going on all over the place, and with the introduction of Dreya, I wasn’t sure whose romance it would be. My overall opinion is that it seemed a little crowded with two major stories woven together, and I wish there was more romance. That being said, I enjoyed it and cannot wait for the next book to see what happens.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review from netgalley.

Her Rogue Alpha is the story of an injured Special Forces man Jayson and his feline shifter girlfriend Layla. Layla is close to becoming an agent out in the field and for Jayson he's proud of her but unable to walk most days, knowing she is out there in danger is killing him. He loves her but doesn't feel like he's man enough to be the one she needs.

Layla loves Jayson more than anything in the world. Seeing him struggle and pushing her away it's hard, but she will always be there. When an offer for a chance for Jayson to be a hybrid to heal his injuries occurs, it will create a riff between them they may not be able to over come.

Missions overseas to rescue a teen, arms dealers, secrets, and lies....there is so much in this one that you can't put it down.

WOW, I loved this book. From the moment that I started reading this book, I knew that there was no putting it down, no matter what needed to be done. The story will grab you and not let you go till the very end. The characters are awesome and amazing and you cannot help but fall in love with them. The pace at which the story moved along was perfect. It didn't have any slow periods and just flowed along perfectly. This book has to be read, you will not be sorry.

I loved Jayson, you really couldn't help but love him, “you know,” Jayson said as she got to her feet, “I think women who can pick locks are hot.” I liked that he sometimes had his priorities straight, “oh, I’m hungry.” Grinning , he took her hand and urged her to her feet. “But not for food.” I enjoyed this book, there's always lovable characters in this series.

4 Stars... We are introduced to Layla and Jayson earlier in the series and are therefore familiar with their backstories... These characters take center stage in this installment to the series coming full circle in their romance... Due to a severe injury sustained in combat, Jayson is mentally, emotionally, and physically broken... Although he desires Layla, he pushes her away feeling unworthy... Until a dangerous opportunity presents itself and, out of desperation, Jayson makes a reckless decision that could have catastrophic consequences... One event after another leads these two characters into a worn torn country where they must overcome their insecurities, learn to trust one another, and become the partners they were always intended to be... Another action packed addition to this series... Again, the overall storyline continues to be propelled forward and new characters are introduced pushing towards that potential explosive finale:)

Her Rogue Alpha is the 5th book in the X-OPS series. This book is packed full of action and nail biting suspense. Characters and interconnecting characters are wonderful. The plot draws you in and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I recommend this book because Paige Tyler's writing is the bomb and her hunky alpha's and their mates are very satisfying.

Jayson Harmon is former Special Forces and was severely injured on a mission in Afghanistan that turned ugly. Jayson doesn't think he is good enough for his girlfriend, feline shifter, Layla Halliwell. He is a cripple and lives in unbearable pain every day and why would she stay with him?
Layla Halliwell knows that Jayson has so much potential, he is still a hero and he has her heart in his hands so she won't let him push her away. Layla will do anything to make him see that they belong together even going to the ends of the earth to have his back on a deadly mission that may kill them both.

Jayson Harmon spent most of his adult life in military special forces until the day he led a group into an ambush and seriously injured his back. Layla Halliwell is one of the shifters working with the DCO, and Jayson fears that even though she cares about him, she'll never be happy living with someone with no job who suffers from severe pain and a disability. Layla loves Jayson and doesn't care about his disability, but Jayson's insecurities lead him to make some rash decisions that may change everything about his life.

Her Rogue Alpha raises issues of living with disability and what that can mean for the quality of a person's life. Jayson seeks out quick and easy answers to his problems, but it's never really clear if those answers are successful, and if they are, what that means in terms of disability representation in this story. The main female character of Layla is very underdeveloped, making her opinions seem even less significant to the story. As weak as the story is in character development, its plot driven story delivers adventure and excitement. Overall, Her Rogue Alpha tackles a serious issue that gets overshadowed by action and intrigue. 3 1/2 stars.

This guy is so selfish. He only thinks of himself, making the excuse that he wants to protect her, but really he just wants to be healed. Totally a shit guy.

I’m not sure why, but I struggled to maintain my focus (and interest) while reading this. It’s probably more to do with my head than the book itself, but I didn’t find Jayson and Layla’s romance particularly compelling. Plenty happens in this book, there is action and adventure and all that good stuff, but as I said, I struggled a little with this.

Part of that is because Jayson is not in a good place at the start of this book. He has a serious back injury that invalided him out of the military and has completely transformed his life, even though he’s not in a wheelchair. Not only is he dealing with constant pain, he’s also struggling with his own view of himself and his worth. I got that and understood it, even if some of his decisions made me shake my head.

What I didn’t get so much was Layla’s response. Everything she has ever been before this book is essentially thrown out of the window. Instead of being a professional trained to understand and help someone in Jayson’s mental state, she seems pretty clueless. Sure, she’s far closer to him than any of her patients, and has been patient with him, but her lack of understanding about why he is in the place he is kind of baffled me. Not that it really matters, because that old Layla isn’t here anymore, instead she’s out in the field, saving the world and getting along just fine.

Their romance has a lot of issues to deal with at the start – and yet, for me, none of them are actually tackled. Jayson’s depression and lack of self-esteem is dealt with by him doing something reckless and apparently improving, while Layla chases after him, keeps secrets and it’s all love and rainbows and aren’t we a great partnership? Meh, not so much, with all the lying and the shady deals behind Jayson’s back. Even though they do work well together, the romance didn’t really have any impact for me.

On top of what’s going on with these two – at home and in Ukraine – chunks of the story are given over to part of the overarching series plot with Thomas Thorn and what Ivy and Landon are up to. Which is distracting, partly because Ivy’s (pretty poor) view of Layla irritates me and her failure to fulfill her promise to her sister never comes up. More than this, though, the storyline with the thief was actually a lot more interesting than Layla and Jayson, which didn’t help my attention span when it came to them.

This isn’t a bad book, and if you’re a fan of the series and reading them in order, you will find stuff to enjoy here. As a romantic pairing that’s been building for sometime, it wasn’t quite all I’d hoped for, but there’s still plenty of action and interesting stuff going down. The Thorn plot continues to advance, and things with the thief are definitely intriguing, making me curious about the next book. As far as this one goes, though, it just didn’t quite grab me that way I expected.
