Together they heal each other and begin to create a future together.

But not everyone supports them, and outside forces threaten to destroy all the happiness they have worked for. Will Alex and Mikayla be strong enough to hold together the fledgling family they are building?

M.E. Montgomery can’t remember a time she hasn’t had at least one book on the go to read. After years of falling headfirst into the lives and loves of other author’s characters, M.E. decided to write her own. She enjoys creating the kind of realistic storybook friends you wish you could actually meet, and sometimes she finds herself wondering what those characters are up to once she’s delivered their happily ever after.
She’s married to her best friend and has four children and two Boxer dogs. They live wherever the Navy sends her husband, usually the East coast of the U.S., but also once in Japan.
Whenever she’s not writing or substitute teaching, she often ponders the riddle of how the kitchen sink appears to automatically refill with dirty dishes as soon as her back is turned. On the occasions it stays empty, you can find her with a glass of wine or Scotch outside at their fireplace or curled up inside with a book, binge watching TV, or chatting with readers.

‘Life isn’t a romance novel. You can’t count on a knight in shining armor to ride in on a white horse and carry you off into the sunset to live happily ever after. Sometimes, you have to catch the hand he reaches out and jump up on the horse with him. Hell, sometimes you have to pull the fool off his horse!”

Squeee!!!I really do not know how I never had a chance of reading this book years go when it was released. I mean, I feel like I was so left out over a book that is light hearted even with some issues going on with both leads, heart breaking at some point yet sweet, funny, swoony and most of all heartwarming. Yes, North Star is a light hearted read, issues might be there just as what is written in the blurb but the way it was delivered is enough for me to get going in the story. In fact right from the very first page I was hooked. I keep on turning the pages because it keeps getting interesting, that and the fact that this book include not just a beautiful heroine and a hottie hero but an adorable child who has experience a life changing event. Issues? Past experiences? Life altering events? Nah! More like, it's the here and now that matters. And that's what I love about reading this book. It doesn't matter how you were burned from the past, it's a matter of accepting how fate intervened the life you were accustomed due to some painful and traumatic experiences and finally working hard for it.

In the end really, I enjoyed reading the book and finished it immediately. I just don't get to experience a journey full of broken souls but I get to ride in their healing process. And right along with that, despite the heart breaking scenes and painful revelations that had me wanting to slap someone, I cannot deny the fact that reading this book felt like I'm being a teenager again. Damn those feelings of excitement and butterfly flutterings in my tummy in anticipation of the leads next interaction. I was swooning all over and the sweetness, hoot!! As I said, teenager feels is just everywhere. I may have shed a tear or two and get so pained with some scenes but I cannot deny that I did smile and laugh out loud too. But the greatest feeling I get to have with this book is the heart warming feels it brought.
I might have been furious about the cliffy but then who knows, what this book is gonna lead us?

Sometimes our search for love and acceptance falls right into our lap when we least expect it, or in Mikayla’s case, she fell into the lap of the man who could be all she is looking for and then some! Convinced she is doomed to be everyone’s friend, and disappointed and devastated by one too many men, Kayla has declared herself officially not interested in a relationship…as if anyone believed her, gun shy is more accurate.

Alex’s bachelor life as he knew it ended the day his twin sister and her husband were killed in an accident. He now has the daunting task of becoming a father to his six-year-old nephew, Aiden and he vows to always be his fierce protector. With no time or inclination for his shallow hook ups, who knew that a rare night out with his best friend would have angel literally falling into his arms.

A chance encounter for Kayla and Alex, never to be repeated, while haunting their thoughts or does Fate have plans for these two that include the healing of a young boy?
That puddle of goo in front of you? It’s me after reading M.E. Montgomery’s North Star. Her characters are so full of life, and sometimes pain, that I found myself holding my breath at times, my heart in knots or grinning like the aunt that says, “I KNEW it, all along.” This journey is twisted with emotions, misunderstandings and the cherubic charm of a young boy who often sees more than Kayla and Alex.

M.E. Montgomery writes like she is telling a special story to each of her readers, knowing just what strings to tug on for the perfect reaction to her words. I am a dialogue diva and this dialogue is fabulous! Allow yourself to get inside each of the character's heads and hearts as their POVs are told. If you are looking for real romance, this series opener is a rare treat for your heart and soul.

I was fortunate to receive a review copy from M.E. Montgomery in exchange for my honest review.

I was gifted this book for an honest review. Man, so glad when I get to win books like this to make my review so easy!
This book and its story struck right to my heart. I was pulled in and identified with these characters very quickly.
What girl hasn't been stepped on, knocked down, heart broken, and basically left to believe love doesn't exist after a man has done a number on us? This is Kayla in a nutshell, although it didn't take many to put her there. A few special douche bags was all it took. She has had tragedy in her life for sure and hasn't let it define who she is. Time to reinvent who she is.
Alex North....well, ummmm....YES PLEASE!! Can I fall in his lap please? Well this is what happens to our damsel out one night. The night that forever changed 3 hearts.
Yes I said 3 hearts.....not a love triangle silly!
Alex has had his own unfortunate tragedy in his life with the death of his twin sister and best friend. He was appointed guardian of their son Aiden upon their death. This bachelor had to turn his world completely around when this sweet little 5 year old came to live with him. Aiden has always been close to Uncle Alex, but these are unfortunate circumstances for them both.
Can they all find a way to put each other back together again?
There is much more to this story of course, but I will be spoiling nothing here.
If you love a heartfelt, sexy, story then look no further.
On to the next book in this Polaris series and cannot wait!!!

Author's first book? Really? Kept me interested and reading. Young kindergarten teacher, low relationship esteem, meets uncle of one student. This little boy's parents killed in car wreck few months earlier. As caring relationship grows between these three, she finds she has a stalker. Then there is phone call from ER physician and family friend, that Kayla and Aiden are injured. Then TO BE CONTINUED!! I almost threw my ereader!!!! Have to get next book.

A simple, easy read. I absolutely hate first-person novels, and this author spelled out exactly why-- the main character was vapid, stupid, and spineless. It took a long time for the story to get going. Grammar errors abounded. I screamed at my kindle a few times over various tropes. Also, PSA to romance writers, men, and virgins: It HURTS when you have sex and your cervix gets hit.

This Book Shines Bright For Contemporary Romance . . .

The emotional depth of this book was so great that you continued to read page after page and grew deeper and deeper connected to the characters. I loved how the romance became more than just attraction, but about healing and completeness. This couple M.E. Montgomery created is without a doubt one of my new favorites and happy to know there is more than one book on them.

Beaten down by words of being "cold" and "not enough" then finally betrayed by the man she thought was it for her, Mikayla Matthews moves to a new town to live with her best friend and restart her life. Kayla at first resorts to a life of a hermit going to work and returning home not enjoying life in fear of rejection. Until one day she meets a man, who rescues her and literally sweeps her off her feet. However, its her old thoughts of insecurity that keep her from truly letting go and giving into her feeling of more with him, which makes her fear she may lose something truly amazing. Alex North is adjusting to a new life, where he is now the guardian of his orphaned nephew, Aiden. Never did he imagine a life where he would now have to be a lone father figure while searching for something, or someone, to guide him through his grief over his twin sister and best friend's sudden deaths. However, when his prayers are answered by Kayla literally falling into his lap, Alex is set on proving to her that he is willing to wait on her and show her how amazing she is despite her past with men.

Overall, Loved it! OMG, I want an Alex North so bad! He is now one of my favorite literary male leads. That man knows how to adore a woman and be what a man needs to be even when his life is rocked off it's axis and spun upside down and all around. Oh and little Aiden, that kid is too cute and had me in tears with his cute words and sadness at the loss of his parents. Kayla is definitely the glue to that bunch and she is a gracious woman who despite all she's been through is still an amazing female. The cute unit they are building is so sweet which you'll want to read more of especially after the cliffhanger ending. I highly suggest once reading this book you quickly nab the second book.

Alexander North is a successful architect. Aiden is his four year old nephew, who is now in his care for life, hopefully. The prologue starts out with Alex and Aiden at a funeral, for Alex's twin sister and best friend. They were also the parents of Aiden. Fast forward to the chapters, and we meet Mikayla, Kayla to her friends, substituting in a kindergarten classroom for a teacher who is out for 6 weeks from surgery. She goes out one Friday evening with her girlfriends to a bar called Back Draft, started by a former fireman. We get some hints about Kayla's past as we head into the night. What happens at the bar? Why does she need rescuing or saving twice? Who does that saving? What happens when her night in shining armor (from the bar of course) comes in to pick up a student late? What happens? Do Alex and Kalya get a chance to get to know one another? How do things work out. All I have to say is that Aiden's grandmother on his father's side is not a nice woman. All the women that have been in Alex's life before (other than mom and sister) seem to have been real witches. Can Kayla let go of her past, explaining it to Alex so that she can move past it? What happens between Sylvia's snide remarks at Alex and Kayla's dinner and the end of the book is nothing short of a roller coaster ride. Between Sylvia, threats, pictures, Ryan(?), and strange cars following Kayla, what happens that lands both her and Aiden in the hospital? You'll have to read book 2 to find out, because that's one heck of a cliff hanger.

*I was given a copy of this book as a gift from Stephanie's Book Reports in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first book in the Polaris series, and it is the beginning of the love story between Alex and Mikayla.

After suffering a heartbreaking betrayal, Mikayla packed up and moved away from her hometown to start over. She has sworn off all men and decided to focus solely on her teaching career. While out one night with friends, she encounters the most handsome man she has ever seen. When he asks her to join him for a drink, her insecurities kick in, and she walks away without even getting his name.

Following the death of his twin sister and best friend, Alex finds himself in the role of a single father to his nephew, Aiden. When fate intervenes and brings the beautiful and selfless Mikayla into his life, he discovers that she is the key to not only his happiness but Aiden's as well. As they begin to develop a relationship, it appears that they each have found what they have been searching for in one another. However, there are outside forces who want to destroy their chance at happiness. Can they persevere and create a happy family, or will these threats rip them apart forever?

Wow, I really loved this book! The story line was so touching, and I found myself hoping that Alex, Mikayla, and little Aiden would find contentment and happiness as a family. I will warn you- this book does end in the mother of all cliffhangers! The good news is that the next book in the series, True North, has already been published, so you won't have to wait to read how the story continues. This is definitely a series that you don't want to miss out on! So, what are you waiting for? One click it now!!

Let me be completely honest here... When I was asked to beta this book I was super excited because hey! Who doesn't want to put their opinion in a book. Sadly, I found I didn't need to do this. ME Montgomery blew me away with this book. You'd be surprised to find this was her debut book!! It was so well thought out and written that I literally kept having to remind myself it's a debut book from a debut author. This book had me laughing and crying (lots) and falling in love. A typical male, meaning he wasn't alpha, he wasn't an ass and he was coming off a devastating loss.... Alex is what I want to read when I need to feel that while most male heroes are unobtainable, I can have him. Kayla is the woman in all of us. Yes, there's heartbreak but she persevered! She trudged forward and showed me that despite being walked over by the fiancé, she was woman hear her roar. And lord help me, I want to adopt Aiden and love him. And be the mom he needs. Thank god for Kayla. While it ends in a cliffhanger I have full confidence that the author will redeem it with one kick ass follow up book. Kudos to the author for wrenching every tear out of me and making me fall in love with North Star!

This book had me running with every emotion! I smiled, laughed, cried. It was a really good read. It is a cliffhanger though, so I'm off to read book 2!

Kayla has had it rough with men. Past relationships have left her to not trust men. She believes she is damaged goods. Alex is dealing with the death of his sister and best friend and is now left to raise their son. Both Kayla and Alex have dealt with a lot of loss and issues and are struggling to move on. When they first meet there is an instant connection, but Kayla isn't ready to meet a guy. A week later, they meet at Aidan's school. Kayla is his teacher. Sparks again fly. They take things slow and start to date. Eventually Kayla tells Alex her story and he can't believe what she has all gone through. Meanwhile, Aidan's grandmother is trying to break up Kayla and Alex and wants to get custody of Aidan so she can take over her son's wealth. This was a great start to the series. Looking forward to book 2!

I was gifted this book in exchange for an honest review.

This story was truly heartwarming. It was a wonder love story about how two people who had similar experiences found their way to one another. Kayla was heartbroken by her past and didn't ever think that anyone would come along. Kayla is new to the area and wants to be around her best friend. Alex was still struggling with his loss and raising a smart young boy like Aiden. Both seem to lean on each other for support and friendship.

I felt like I knew both of these characters. They were relatable with their daily struggles and their fears. This book was well worth the time to read and I can't wait to read the next in the series. M.E. knew how to engage the reader and keep their attention without adding extra filler. Highly recommend this to anyone that is looking for a love story. Lindsey, Reviewer for MNP.

I'm torn on how to rate this book. I really like the characters, and Alex is the perfect hero. I was intrigued by the plot in the beginning, but the last 20-30% of the story just felt like filler. I knew this book would end in a cliffhanger, but it seems like it probably could have been condensed into one (granted, I have not yet read book 2 so I could be way off base). Also, the cliffhanger didn't totally grip me. To me, a good cliffhanger means that I immediately have to download the next book right away!! While I am interested in what happens, I don't have this consuming need to continue with the next book right this minute.

This debut novel totally blew me away. I couldn't put it down once I started it and just had to read it until it was finished. It is emotional and my heart broke for Aiden having to go through such a terrible ordeal at such a young age. Alex and Kayla find each other when they least expect it and they make such a perfect couple that you can't help hoping it all works out well for them in the end.

Definitely one of my favourite books of this year. Well done M.E. Montgomery, I look forward to reading the next in the series.

North Star (Northstar Duet Part 1) - The Polaris Series #1 - Review

Couple: Kayla & Alex

Author: M.E. Montgomery

Tropes: single dad, tragic past, insta-lust, teacher-parent, sweet roamcen, small town

Review: Tangled pasts and buried sectors clash in this page-during duet from M.E. Montgomery! In book 1 of the duet, we meet Kayla and Alex who at first glimpse seem completely opposite of one another. AS it unfolds we learn more about their pasts, prior pains and heartaches that they keep hidden from everyone.

Kayla is a spirited young teacher who meets Aiden, Alex’s nephew that he is taking care of after a tragic accident. This sets off a series of events that push them together and open up old wounds for Kayla. After experiencing a few horrible break-ups Kayla believes she is not fit for love and at first distances herself from Alex, but then begins to see he is genuine in his pursuit to get to know her.

Alex is a man who lost a sister and best friend in one fell swoop. The book tales place closely after the tragedy and in the first book we see him struggle with grief the most through Kayla’s eyes. After meeting a stunning woman who quite literally falls into his lap, Alex begins to believe inn fate when he finds out a few days later that the mystery woman is his nephew’s teacher.

This first part is tragic and achingly beautiful. It depicts the loss and struggles on faces with losing a loved one and we get to see Kayla’s perseverance since book 1 is from her POV only. AS time goes on we also begin to see her grow stronger and truly believe in love and happiness again.

The couple has great chemistry and the events and flounders of them both make the read real and entertaining. I recommend this for any who loves a HEA that ends with a cliffhanger in part one.

Rating: 100+, this was an achingly beautiful read that makes you want to read it again and again!

This is the first time reading something from M.E. Montgomery. I read this for a reading challenge and it was better than I expected. Kayla and Alex are kindred spirits that found each other. Both have inner struggles. Once Kayla came into Alex's life, things started to change for the better. I kind of liked Kayla. She's a relatable character, but always having her self-doubting made her character weak. I understand that she's struggling with insecurities, and sometimes they're hard to overcome them. But I felt that sometimes the insecurities were there just to cause some conflict between the characters.
The story dragged a little for me. The pace was slow. I felt that there was too much description, especially for the settings. I really didn't care what color of the furniture or curtains were. I think there was more description on the settings than on what the characters looked like. The love scenes are tamed, not explicit. I was more interested in Kayla's roommate, Jen, and Alex's best friend, Tyler. There was something going on with them and I wanted to know more. I wanted to know what was behind Jen's behavior whenever she was around Tyler. There is a big cliffhanger on the end.

This is a debut novel?! Wow!! I have just totally devoured it from start to finish and have been totally swept away by Mikayla and Alex's story.

This book is everything - it is moving and extremely emotional, but also has plenty of humor romance and hope as well.

There is a lot of sadness that surrounds Alex and his nephew Aiden, due to family tragedy, but I loved how they were coping together. How I fell in love with Aiden - he is the coolest, cutest little boy ever! I loved how Kayla entered their lives and how she helped them as well.

Kayla has her own past sadness and insecurities, so as expected there are plenty of ups and downs throughout this book. But there is nso much to this story and so many layers, it really will give you all the feels. And with a bit of angst and some suspense thrown in, it has everything you could want.

And that ending...... I need the next book now!!

At the start of the book, Alex has lost his married twin sister and best friend in a car accident. He becomes guardian of their son, Aiden. He is trying hard to be strong for Aiden, adjust his successful career to fewer hours away from home and give Aiden a comfortable home where he feels loved.
Kayla was badly burned in a relationship the summer before, and it wasn't the first time. She feels she might not be able to hold any man's attraction for a lifetime and isn't interested in trying again. She is a newly graduated teacher, subbing in Aiden's kindergarten class for a few weeks.
This couple has a lot of past to struggle through, as does the adorable Aiden. There are many emotional scenes that will pull you in and make you feel their pain. The love story is very slow growing, but the heat is always there to temper their caution.
This book does end in a cliffhanger. The conclusion is in the book True North.

Warning... this is the first half of a story. It's been a page turner so far! This is my first book by M.E. Montgomery and I really have enjoyed it so far. It's written from the point of view of one of the main characters, Kayla. She's had a history of bad luck with men. Always choosing the wrong ones. She's currently a substitute teacher and living with her best friend in North Carolina. She meets Alex while out with some friends and is instantly attracted. He has recently suffered the tragic loss of his twin sister and his best friend, who were married. He is currently raising their young son, Aiden. Their story is very entertaining and heart warming so far. This book ended in a cliff hanger and I can't wait to get started on the second book to see what happens!

4.5 Stars for North Star!

M.E. Montgomery is a new-to-me author, and I can't believe what I've been missing! North Star was wonderful, yes it's a cliffhanger, but it's a solid read on its own.
It's a story of two people dealing with the hand life has dealt.
Alex is trying to make a home for his recently orphaned nephew. Mikayla is a kindergarten teacher trying to rebuild her self-image and confidence. They meet unexpectedly, then find themselves brought together again by a forlorn 5 year old, Alex's nephew Aiden.
This is an emotional story filled with smiles, drama, and a few tears. I enjoyed it immensely, and look forward to the next book in the series!

A slow burn, romantic love story
NB: This book ends on a cliffhanger. You will need to read True North for the conclusion to the story.
This is the first novel have read from Mary Ellen Montgomery and I found it hard to put down I enjoyed it so much. It was engaging and easy to read and I really got to know the characters in the book; they were so well written and developed and not just Alex and Mikayla, our main characters, but the secondary characters around them who are so vital in adding to the story. This is a slow burn, romantic love story as their hearts are healed by the other from the tragedies of their pasts.

I was honestly bored—extremely.
The book lacked a compelling story, which surprised me, especially since I really enjoyed the author's previous work, Yesterday's Tomorrow.

This one, though, was just too cheesy. The hero was unrealistically perfect, while the heroine came across as dull and irritating. Her issues felt exaggerated—more like a string of complaints than real, compelling struggles. She seemed immature, overly needy, and constantly fragile, which made it hard to connect with her.

Frankly, this story didn’t need a sequel. Everything could have been wrapped up in a single book without dragging it out.

Two broken souls

One little boy brings two broken souls together who are trying to make sense of the loss both have experienced in their lives. Alex and Kayla decide to open their hearts to each other and try to overcome their insecurities while also fighting to keep Alex's sisters son, Aiden. This was a pretty good story and beginning for Alex and Kayla, but the ending was a cliffhanger, darn it, right in a pivotal scene. I have to see what happens next. There were just a few too many ! throughout the story though

I laughed, I cried, boy did I cry. I couldn't put it down. We are all imperfect and the struggles with self doubt and the perseverance to keep going when life kicks you in the teeth make this heroine one I kept rooting for. Her tenderness to a small boy orphaned and in pain made me cry as much as the painful experiences she endures. I was left with a cliffhanger that leads to book two and I can hardly wait. I am already anticipating books 3 and 4 as I have become interested in those characters as well. I Highly recommend this book.
