With A Kick #8

Double Scoop

Rate this book
Where out of disaster comes revelation - and love...

A sudden disaster strikes everyone’s favourite ice cream shop, With A Kick. Not only does it threaten the livelihood of its owner, Patrick, but also his loyal assistant Lee. The last thing in the world Patrick would ever want to do is hurt Lee, either physically or emotionally. Why would he? He’s been falling in love with Lee since the day Lee invited himself into the shop’s business and Patrick’s life. But familiar and deeply-held insecurities hold Patrick back – he’s too gruff for Lee, too old, and his labour-of-love business is never going to make him rich.

Lee is weary of trying to make Patrick see how much he admires and cares for him. To Lee, it’s a very straightforward situation. Patrick is sexy, Patrick is smart, Patrick needs Lee’s help – and Lee needs Patrick in his life as more than a boss. All the characteristics Patrick finds inhibiting, Lee finds attractive. However, if Patrick’s apparently never going to make a move on Lee, how long should Lee wait to make his own move? Maybe Patrick thinks Lee is too clingy, too immature. Maybe Lee should give up his romantic hopes completely. If, that is, he can bear to do it.

The disaster at the shop brings them a whole new opportunity to work – and love – together to make a go of things. They’ve both got to look at each other in a whole new way. With the help of all their With A Kick friends, this could be make or break for the reluctant couple!

Clare took the pen name London from the city where she lives, loves, and writes. She says she likes variety in her writing while friends say she’s just fickle, but as long as both theories spawn good fiction, she’s happy. Most of her work features male/male romance and drama with a healthy serving of physical passion, as she enjoys both reading and writing about strong, sympathetic and sexy characters.

Clare currently has several novels sulking at that tricky chapter 3 stage and plenty of other projects in mind . . . she just has to find out where she left them in that frenetic, testosterone-fuelled family home.

A very enjoyable series, and I'm glad to see Lee and Patrick get their happily-ever-after. Clare London has created an interesting community, and each book has it's own unique flavor... and those ice cream recipes are an inspiration :).

I have really enjoyed all of these stories that take place in and around With a Kick, a charming ice cream shop in London run by Patrick and Lee.

Double Scoop is - Finally! - Lee and Patrick's story. Patrick owns With a Kick, although Lee has been with him since day one and is the true heart of the shop. Their world is shaken when some fault equipment causes a major accident, injuring Lee and putting the future of With a Kick in danger. These two have been dancing around each other since the first book, both wanting more than just a business arrangement but doubts and fears keeping them from speaking up. It takes some help from all of their friends to realize that they need to speak up and not risk losing the great things that they have together.

Joel Leslie, as always, brings his A game to narrate this story. His accents are just divine, and we get British, western American, Turkish, eastern European, men, women, you name it - and you can tell who everyone is. Excellent job!

I have loved these boys from With a Kick - and there's a new story that features Karel that I'm gonna have to get, too! These stand well on their own, but I think you'd get more enjoyment having read the other stories in the series since these guys all hang out with each other. I admittedly didn't read Sue Brown's entries to this series, but have read all of the ones written by Clare London.

I received an audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Finally, finally, FINALLY!! The story of Patrick the oblivious and Lee the adorable! Finally! I am a fan of the With a Kick series but I have been waiting for these two. I was very worried, since these two have been present throughout the series, wanting and not doing anything about it. Would it be as good as I hoped they’d be? Thank ice cream, YES!
Patrick is the grumpy owner of With a Kick, our favorite ice cream shop that is for more than just kids. It is due to Lee’s suggestion that Patrick even started the place and it’s Lee who helps keep it going. So many couples have come together around With A Kick, yet through it all Patrick and Lee just keep dancing around the issue. Who’s fault is that? Patrick’s! While Lee has made it pretty clear what he wants, Patrick has this idea that he isn’t enough, or maybe he’s too much, for Lee. Until that fateful day when a random spark ignites the building, with Lee in it.
The accident that hurts Lee does a number on With a Kick and it takes an army of friends to put it back together. People that Patrick didn’t even realize would want to help, because sometimes he is just so thick-headed. It is a telling thing that while waiting to hear news of Lee, make sure he is okay from the blast, a stranger gives comfort to Patrick. “Hope your son’s well again soon.” And isn’t that a big part of Patrick’s problem, that he feels he’s too old for Lee?
Sometimes the misunderstandings between the two of them make you want to clunk their heads together. I admit from my point of view, it’s Patrick. I love the guy but come on!! Under the guise of “doing what’s best” for Lee, he’s hurting him in the process.
I loved seeing how everyone we got to meet in other books rallies together to get things repaired and With a Kick open again. They work, they raise money, they put on a show, they keep the word out. It’s an awesome community.
With the arrival of Karel, we have more problems. With Patrick constantly treating Lee as the “boy”, someone of Patrick’s own age who happens to be gorgeous, smart and funny? It’s bound to cause hurt feelings, especially when Patrick’s doubts keep resurfacing. And the longer things go on, the more awkward and tense they get. What’s it going to take to get these two on the right road?
You can definitely read this as a standalone but it packs more of a punch if you’ve read the series, as you know all the people involved here but more importantly, you see how long Patrick and Lee have been sidestepping each other. And glory be, Patrick does have a romantic side. The proof is in the mug. Adorable!
I am hoping this isn’t the end of With A Kick, because I now that I know my favorite guys are all settled, Karel needs a story. Oh, Ms. London…

Patrick and Lee have been present in all the With a Kick book, serving yummy goodness to all - and now they get their chance, if only Patrick can get a positive thought in his head!!
Lots of misunderstandings between Patrick and Lee every time they get together after the explosion - irritating! Thank goodness for Bryan and the whole cast of characters for both putting With a Kick back together and it's owners.
Fast paced entertaining read 3.5*

A really good end to the series

This is an excellent last book in the series and it is lovely not only to see Patrick and Lee get their own happy ending, but the way that everyone else who has had their own story also features. Friendship is do important, and when things go wrong, you really find out who is there for you. For Patrick and Lee, the answer is all those for whom their shop has been a haven. Excellent!

Older and wiser doesn't apply to Patrick, in fact he's most definitely in need of a slap upside his head! Nervous, thinking he's too old, any old excuse will do because he's scared. The push and pull between Patrick and Lee is at times amusing and then sad, Lee wants it so badly but he's beginning to give up. A touch too long to be a novella I think but it was still a quick but lovely tale.

“Sometimes things have to go wrong in order to go right.” ~ Denise Tinsley

Patrick, of 'Double Scoop' by Clare London, is terrified when his business partner and best friend, Lee, is injured in an explosion. Patrick becomes intensely aware of how much Lee means to him and how awful he would feel if he were to lose him. The accident lowers Patrick's walls of self-deprecation just long enough to give Lee an idea of just how precious he is to Patrick, but once he knows Lee is going to be all right, Patrick withdraws again, diminishing the importance of their encounter, leaving Lee hurt and confused.

Even though the shop is damaged, all is not lost. Patrick has more friends than he ever realized and they all have their own special talents and expertise to help get things up and running again. Bryan, Patrick's accountant and best friend, with his accounting skills starts planning on ways to help financially. Brian’s partner, Phiz, and his former roommate Curtis, get busy making posters and getting the word out about the shop being closed temporarily. Eddy, the actor, has lots of connections and starts planning fundraisers. His partner, Nuri, a law student, helps with the legal stuff, while enlisting his many relatives who are carpenters and tradesmen of all sorts, to pitch in as well. Mic and his boyfriend Rob are there to offer their assistance; Rob brings his entire hockey team with them. David and Stan, and Riley and Curtis, are there too along with lots of other helpers, some of whom Patrick didn't even know. Even with all the help, it's a struggle to get everything done.

During the renovation, Patrick and Lee's relationship becomes even more strained. Gone are the days of laughing and joking, easy touches and smiles. Everything is stiff, uncertain, and up in the air. In the name of doing what Patrick thinks is best for Lee, he is oblivious to how much he's hurting him with his thoughtless words and actions. Lee keeps hoping Patrick will open up and let him know how he really feels, but he doesn't. All their friends can see that Patrick and Lee obviously care deeply for each other, but they can only stand by and watch, hoping they will eventually confront the “elephant in the room”. Otherwise Patrick and Lee will miss out on what could be true happiness.

I've been waiting for Patrick and Lee's story although I feared there would be problems. I wanted to knock some sense into them both. Patrick whose reasoning about being too old and not right for Lee was ridiculous, and Lee, although he tried to take the first step, should have demanded to know what Patrick was feeling. Bringing all the previous characters together to help Patrick and Lee created a great opportunity to review relationships between them. For those who haven't read the series, I suggest starting at the beginning and reading all the way through. Thanks, Clare, for finally getting Patrick and Lee together and for all the other eccentric, zany, wonderful characters contained in the 'With a Kick' series. A special thanks, as well, to Sue Brown for your outstanding contributions to the series. For awesome stories with humor, sex, angst, entertainment, and love, I can't imagine a better writing team than Clare and Sue!

Double Scoop is the eight book in the ‘With A Kick’ series. ‘With A Kick’ is the name of an ice cream shop in London that serves specialty alcoholic ice cream. The books in the series all have something to do with the shop in some way and the two men who run the shop, Patrick and Lee. The story is told in third person through Patrick’s eyes.

Note: May contain some minor spoilers

YEA!!! Patrick and Lee, the guys behind the With a Kick shop, finally get their story. Double Scoop is the eighth book in this series written by Clare London and Sue Brown. While this is a series and is best read in order (if you want to know how the other couples got together and their relationships with Lee and Patrick), it is possible to enjoy this story on its own merits as a standalone. Just be aware that it’ll be a bit spoilery for some of the previous stories in the series.

Patrick and Lee have been fixtures in the With a Kick series, as their shop is the catalyst locale where many of the previous stories start/end/play out. Patrick’s a former teacher who, through a redundancy (layoff for the Americans), decided to leave teaching and open his own ice cream shop. Lee is his younger assistant and friend who would like to be more. They’ve worked hard at making the business a success and make a great team.

Early one morning there is a big disaster at the shop that results in a closure. Patrick is devastated and feels very guilty, not just because of the shop but because of Lee and his concern about him. While Lee takes a trip to hospital, word travels quickly and Lee and Patrick’s many friends step up to get things moving with the shop. Bryan, Patrick’s best friend and his business accountant, takes charge of making sure the business and insurance and police end of things are looked after while Curtis, one of the shop’s suppliers, helps get things stabilized at the shop itself with the help of other friends.

Once Lee is released from hospital, Patrick takes him back to the hotel he’s been staying at since his home is above the shop, and he isn’t able to go back until the building is ruled safe. Lee is tired and Patrick lets him rest, but there is only one bed. Eventually Patrick has to get some sleep, but when he and Lee both wake up, well…sleep is the last thing on their minds.

4,5 stars from me!

Finally, after what felt like forever, Patrick's and Lee's story. The two men who stand behind the shop "With a Kick".
And what a story it was!
Disaster, extraordinary friends who stand together and go beyond all when one of their own needs help and finally, a love story. What more can you want?

I can't find the right words to tell you how much I loved to read about these two, to read their own story. I was waiting for this since I read the first book in the series.

I felt right at home while reading, felt connected to the characters, like I was visiting old friends. I could practically feel the panic & the helplessness Patrick felt when desaster striked or old self-doubts kept creeping back.

And that is something I adore in Clare's storys!

I was so engaged in the story, the situations and the feelings of Patrick and Lee, that there were times I was rolling my eyes and wanted nothing more than to shake Patrick - and sometimes Lee too - and talk some sense into them.
But in the end, they more or less managed it on their own ;) And I couldn't have been happier about that!

It was fantastic to meet other couples and persons from the other books again and to see how dear Patrick and Lee and "With a Kick" are to them.

All in all a story I enjoyed reading and I'm sure I will go back to the series and read all of the books again.

*** Copy provided to Bayou Book Junkie in exchange for a fair and honest review. ***

This book is part of a series, but it can be read as a standalone.

Patrick has been in love with Lee for a long time, but the age difference between them and the fact that Lee is his employee prevent him from making his feelings known. When tragedy strikes they come closer, but is Patrick ready to trust Lee and what they can have together?

I loved Lee, he was amazing. I wanted to slap Patrick a few times to make him see what was in front of him the whole time, though. Lee seemed more mature sometimes than Patrick, despite being much younger. Still, they had great chemistry and when they were together it was obvious they were so into each other.

I adored seeing other characters from the series that I recognized and how they all rallied to help when Patrick needed them. Their intervention to make Patrick finally do what he needed to do was awesome!

All in all, a fun, enjoyable read (when I wasn't screaming at Patrick, that is).

A Joyfully Jay review.

Patrick breaks my heart. He’s lonely, and he has feelings for Lee he believes he shouldn’t act upon. He doesn’t think young, carefree, and sweet Lee would want a grumpy old man (although I don’t think he’s that old) like himself. I kind of wanted to grab him up and shake some sense into him. He wasn’t seeing what was right in front of his face.

Lee makes me smile. His outlook is so sunny, and he has boundless energy. He helps Patrick run the ice cream shop, coming up with ideas about everything from promotions to decorating. He also loves Patrick with all his heart. He tries every way he knows how to let Patrick know, but Patrick just won’t get with the program. This frustrates Lee to no end. He even goes so far as to leave town for awhile during renovations on the shop. It hurts Lee that Patrick won’t acknowledge what’s between them.

A very enjoyable read in the 'With A Kick' series. I've only read a few of the other stories so far, but it was enough to recognise the characters and the set up. It was great to see the owners of the ice cream parlour finally getting together, although I felt like bashing Lee and Patrick's heads together or yelling at them, "Just tell him how you feel!" A perfect example of communication not working. As a reader, I could feel the pull between the two men, and was willing them to sort things out or at least go back to how it used to be between them.
I loved how their friends all chipped in and almost took over the restoration of the shop. What great mates. They all knew Patrick and Lee were destined to be together and even wrongly assumed they were already dating. There was a lovely happy ending for the guys when they finally sort things out.

I received an ARC for an honest and fair review

The latest entry in the With A Kick series finally gets to the owner of With A Kick Patrick and his ever faithful and adorable shop assistant Lee.

The two men are clearly into each other but neither can see the other's interest. Patrick thinks he's too old for Lee and Lee thinks that Patrick views him as a child (the fact that he calls him kid all the time reinforces this.)

An explosion at With A Kick forces them to reevaluate their relationship both professional and personal.

I really did like this book and it was a welcome addition to the series. I just wish Lee and Patrick had sat down and talked sooner to alleviate some of the internal angst but overall it was a very enjoyable read.

Also the bringing together of the extended With A Kick family was a nice edition. The way they rallied around Patrick and Lee after the explosion was great to see.

I'd been waiting for Lee and Patrick's story for what seems like forever and it was definitely worth the wait. The fact that these men are in love with each other has been pretty obvious to the patrons of With A Kick throughout the series, they just needed to realise it themselves! I loved catching up with everyone from the previous books, Phiz still makes me giggle and Nuri *sigh* well I just love him. Lee and Patrick's getting together wasn't easy, considering they communicated when working together perfectly it was frustrating to see them fail miserably at communicating their feelings to each other. Of course, all's well that ends well and we get to see our double scoop of happiness! <3

I've been waiting (not so patiently) for Patrick and Lee's story and Clare London did not disappoint. I wanted to throttle Patrick on more than one occasion, but his wariness made sense and made the story believable.

I would love to read more of the two of them now that they are official. A short story would be awesome and much appreciated. I love the affect Lee has on Patrick and Patrick's realization and acceptance of it is so charming.

Little disappointing, but still enjoyable.

Since Lee and Patrick have been the backbone of the series (or at least their shop is), I was expecting more from their story. I was very sad we didn't get to see Lee's POV at all and he and Patrick didn't really seem to spend that much time together on the page. Their lack of communication was annoying and detracted from the story.
