A magic rings transports accountant Sara Dayny from her suburban Minnesota home to Regency England, where she finds herself among a band of gypsies and where she falls for Toma the Magnificent, a handsome gypsy man. Original.
Susan Sizemore's life and interests include such varied activities as medieval costuming and embroidery, being a chef, and working in the defense industry. She is owned by her spoiled rotten, beloved mutt dog, rather than the other way around, and this is just fine with her.Current hobbies include hiking and studying t'ai chi. She travels whenever she can, loves history, loud music, movies, good coffee, and writes constantly. She hopes readers enjoy her stories as much as she enjoys writing them. She has won the Romance Writers of America's Golden Heart Award and has been nominated for two Romantic Times awards.
Perhaps it's wrong to use a science-fiction/fantasy reader's eye to evaluate romance, but the premise of a magical ring that can talk and transports people through time is just too...pat.
And even for romance... Sure, the heroine is feisty and can play a mean round of guitars, and the hero has amazing body and awesome blue eyes... However, his suddenly-revealed background is hardly believable. That she can run some kind of a revolution--albeit a quick and bloodless one--is even less so.
Finally, for a novel that supposedly happens among a familia of gypsies... there is amazingly little background information about this historically xenophobic tribe, beyond that they accept thieving and fortune-reading as valid means of making a living. Stereotypical, can we say?
This time travel romantic story sounded like something I would love but it was just okay. The ending left a lot hanging, unless you don't care about the revolution, Beth & Max or the history (or future) of the ring and the brooch. I didn't grow very attached to the characters which is a must for me to love a book.
While time travel romance can be a bit tricky, I have to agree with another review that this was just too over the top with, not only a magical ring, but one that talks? Also, I felt the story was a bit choppy. Sorry, not for me.
