Justin Jordan is an American comic book writer. He is known for writing and co-creating The Strange Talent of Luther Strode, Spread, Dead Body Road, Deep State, Dark Gods and Savage Things. He has also written Green Lantern: New Guardians, Superboy, Deathstroke and Team 7 for DC Comics and the relaunch of Shadowman for Valiant Entertainment.
In 2012, he was nominated for the Harvey Award for Most Promising New Talent.
The Hercules Method transformed Luther Strode from an ordinary kid into a god-like superhero. Many others were similarly changed, developing “strange talents” of their own - except, unlike Luther, most chose to use their powers for evil, forming The Murder Cult. Now, in this third and final book of the series, Luther is set to destroy the Cult once and for all by taking out the head: the biblical Cain. Seconds out - fight!
I’ve been a big fan of this series since the first volume and, although I still enjoyed the finale, this third book was the weakest story-wise for me. Luther and Petra work their way through the Murder Cult’s operatives scattered across the world to find Cain’s location. This involves them popping up in Russia or Hong Kong and fighting someone before moving on to the next. It’s not terribly involving.
Joining them is Delilah, as in Samson & Delilah. Maybe I needed to re-read the first two books but I’m not sure where she came from or what her deal was. She’s immortal with psychic powers for some reason? Ok… I guess she has ties to Cain and that explains it all? Petra was really annoying. She kept trying to be “funny” and “charming” and came off as totally irritating instead.
I’m not gonna complain too much about the lack of story or character too much though because this series is basically a showcase for one of the best artists working in comics today: Tradd Fuckin’ Moore. Holy shit this is an amazingly drawn book! Like the other two books, Legacy is a near non-stop hyper-violent action-fest as Luther battles one crazy mofo after another in some epic sequences.
Just the opening scene alone where Samson takes on an entire army single-handed was stunning but set the stage for what’s to follow. Luther breaking out of police custody on the bridge and escaping with Petra, his fight with The Twins - and that’s all just in the first issue! Moore was clearly influenced by The Matrix Reloaded as the battle on the highway between Luther and Dobrev was very much like the highway scene from that movie with characters jumping from one vehicle to another and solid ground rippling like water from the force of the fight.
The Gardener fight in the snow-covered Russian forest was awesome (the path of skulls was a nice touch) though I would’ve preferred the Russian dialogue to be translated. Luther’s fight against The Shooter was the best sequence in the book, again riffing on Matrix Reloaded by crashing through skyscraper windows backwards while shooting. The insanely imaginative fighting between Luther and Shooter was too cool and Moore almost animates it on the page with his precise, flowing artwork. I also liked that writer Justin Jordan included a character who’s used the Hercules Method for good for a change.
It’s not just the fight sequences either but sometimes just a panel will stand out as unbelievably beautiful. For me that was when Delilah was recounting her backstory and she’s making a moonlight escape - one small panel on a page and it looks remarkable. The Strange Talent of Tradd Moore! Credit to Felipe Sobreiro too for his masterful colours elevating Moore’s art to the highest level - the blood is very, very red, and I loved the whites of the Russian snow.
Of course they make it to Cain’s lair (which looks a bit like the Tiger’s Mouth Cave from Disney’s Aladdin) and incredibly bloody violence ensues. Jordan tries to make it a meaningful ending but considering most of the book (and series for that matter) is just mental fighting, ironically it doesn’t quite have that powerful a punch on the reader.
Moore also writes a short backup featuring the Twins that wasn’t bad but didn’t really need to be included. Up-and-coming artist Stephen Green draws and his apprenticeship with Sean Murphy really shows as his style is quite similar to Murphy’s.
Luther Strode goes out with a bang with Legacy, ending as it started with scene after scene of exaggerated superhero action drawn superbly by the genius that is Tradd Moore. Justin Jordan’s script didn’t do much for me but Moore’s glorious artwork “moore” than made up for it (yukyuk) - goes without saying that if you’re one of his fans, you’re definitely picking this up. If you want to see some of the best action comics have to offer, and you’re not squeamish, check out Luther Strode.
This is a fantastic ending to The Luther Strode series.
The art work is unreal. Each action scene comes to life in these drawings. I would love to see some more of this. Shame it had to end after 3 volumes.
There's an excerpt at the beginning from the author which is interesting, showing the reasoning behind the character, overall a delightful series, action packed, a bit of ancient bible mythology and lots and lots of blood.
I guess I was not alone in thinking that this was not the best of the three Strode books. I liked how timely a lot of the commentary is, but I didn't really care for Petra at all. I know Luther loves her, but she really came off as annoying. The art is top notch, but I think that Tradd excels in the smaller moments as much as these huge visceral battles. See the issue of ZERO he did.
I'd just like to highlight the art of Tradd Moore throughout this series. Soooooo good. So different, so perfect for expressing what's going on in this story, which could be a snoozefest in the hands of an artist with less life on the page, an artist who makes fights look like a series of still photos instead of real action. I liked the series and it's over-the-top violence and blood, and if you like those elements of Invincible, this is a good fit. But more than anything, the art really shines.
While it may be a bittersweet read to leave the characters, I can't imagine a better place for the story to go. Still ultra violent, kinetic artwork and classy Petra dialogue with a sprinkle of other cool character designs. After finishing it for the first time, I can't wait to marathon read all three books some time in the near future.
This is my favorite chapter out of the entire saga. Almost every page is a piece of art, the line quality and colors are amazing and beautifully trippy.
This was pretty dreadful. The series got worse as it went on. Not a fan of where the story went (more mindless violence) or the art. This is just simply not for me.
The final volume has several long action scenes that could have been easily cut in half. Still, each of them is highly original in their over-the-top style. There hasn't been any realism in previous volumes either and the author seems to have decided to up the ante as far as it can go. The focus on bombastic battles made me think of the action scenes in Matrix. Here there is even more focus on fighting, apparently just for the hell of it. It's like the creators are doing their best to make it near impossible to turn this script into a movie because of the sheer cost of those scenes.
Luther and Petra have been living in bliss away from the world. Unfortunately, news of other superhumans' activity reaches them. They choose to act and begin a series of events that will lead them to the followers of Cain, the very first superhuman who started it all.
Okay, this last volume was... not that enjoyable as previous ones. It was "I don't wanna fiiight" and "It doesn't have to be this waaay" and bah. Just bah. Why bah? Story continued, though it was nothing but fighting. In every. Goddamn. Issue. Fighting. Somebody. Last one was kind of better than other ones. But even when I hated it was nothing more than fights mostly, I have to admit - that artwork is brilliant, those drawings seemed to be alive sometimes. Ending was amazing - nothing I wasn't expecting, but still perfectly done and I enjoyed it. Glad this series exists.
the better of the three books despite there being a whole dialog in only russian. (which was confusing) Finally a little substance in the writing the gf was made to be almost intolerable, (like a wannabe Tank Girl) definitely should not make anymore of these.
Don't get me wrong. It's a good book and cool art and story, but the first two were just way better. I liked his physique in book two the best. He looks to bloated in this one. I might had a stroke but were the f* did Delilah come from all of a sudden?
Probably not a good sign when the best I can think to say of this concluding chapter in the Luther Strode trilogy is "well.. at least it's over now".. as usual Tradd Moore's art is the real MVP.
Enjoyable end to this series but it got a little repetitive after a while and the action was incomprehensible at some points. Quite the fun series though
Tradd Moore's art alone is worth several times the price of admission. He's one of the most incredibly underrated artists working in comics. HUGE fan of his stuff!
I love Luther Strode. These books, in their incredible gory splendor, speak to me on a deeper level. The series could have only been better were it offered the ongoing treatment, rather than being segmented into three separate miniseries. With that context in mind, the pacing of book three is a little wild. A lot gets done in a very little space. While not all of the storytelling notes may be in key here, the visuals are more powerful than ever, with Tradd truly ascending into some new level of violent mastery. The final Strode book is a visual masterpiece, and at it's core, it is full of the heart and love of its creators.
Muscled “superman” and gun-toting girlfriend – lots of action
I've not read any of the previous volumes of Luther Strode so this came as a new experience for me. Luther Strode is a big muscled strong hero with a gun-toting girlfriend, Petra. They come into conflict with a variety of similar beings in their search for Cain, including the orginal Delilah.
A lot of action and blodshed is included in this tale, ending in a final confrontation with Cain. This is OK as far as it goes: it's well-illustrated but gernally the plot is simple: lots of fighting!
