Hunters are a special breed, dedicated to tracking down treasures, magical beasts, and even other men. But such pursuits require a license, and less than one in a hundred thousand can pass the grueling qualification exam. Those who do pass gain access to restricted areas, amazing stores of information, and the right to call themselves Hunters.

1: Part 4
With the King preoccupied with playing Gungi, Gon and the other Hunters get closer and closer to their target. An unforeseen accident results in the deactivation of Neferpitou's En, making the defenses surrounding the castle temporarily vulnerable. The Extermination team readies for their showdown with the King, but with only a few days left before the "selection," will they be in time to save all the citizens from turning into Ant soldiers?!

3.5/5 but a round down.

Things are finally starting to pick up and get interesting again but I'm really starting to get impatient with it.

It appears that we're laying the game pieces for the final battle now, judging by how everything went in this volume. Plenty of battles between the "lesser" chimera, but so far nothing really against either the King or Royal Guard - but I don't think it'll be long before those battles start up.

I'm pretty intrigued by the influence that a little blind girl (Komugi) could have on a seemingly immoral being - even to the extent of them questioning their own decisions, and thinking back on things that have happened up until now. I'm curious whether there will be any further development in that regard, or whether her influence has peaked.

Chapter notes below for reference:

The action is rising and we're heading towards an explosion. And meanwhile, Meruem has been fleshed out a lot more after meeting Komugi, who is just precious. Meruem is starting to feel attachment to someone else for the first time. He begins to question the might makes right mentality that had been forced upon him since he was a fetus. He realizes how cruel he has been to slaughter people just because they they have a kind of strength that isn't physical. In resistance to this, he tries to regress back to his simpler worldview by planning to kill Komugi. But he is immediately proven wrong when he ends up taking care of her instead. His mind is resisting, but his heart has already been changed. He wants to think of his games with Komugi as a challenge to exert superiority over her, but there's something more than that drawing him in.

Meanwhile, Morel gets some nice action and Knov's breakdown was a nice depiction of an anxiety attack. Meleoron and Ikalgo are super charming too.

So all these pieces have been set and it's time for things to really kick off. I can't wait.

The stuff with the king and the blind girl is great, the rest of this volume may very well have been skipped. I really don't care about the wheel spinning as everyone waits for the right time to strike. Every time King is on the page I'm enjoying it, every time it switches to Gon and friends sitting around doing nothing I get bored.

The heroes are setting the pieces (pun intended) for the grand assault on Ant Kingdom. Here we go:

- Morel is the all-star in this volume, finishing his battle with Cheetu before taking on surfer-liger boy. A nice showcase of his lung capacity and pipe-smoking skills.

- Meanwhile, the Chimera Ant King is just falling apart without any intervention from our heroes - literally and figuratively. He can't beat the savant he brought into his kingdom in a game of fancy checkers, so Meruem decides the right way to handle his failure is to slap his right-hand butterfly man and RIP OFF HIS OWN ARM. As you'll see in the next bullet, this proves to be an idiotic decision.

- With Pitou doing puppet surgery on the Meruem's arm, Knov takes advantage of the lack of surveillance and goes on a portal-dropping spree. Take note: the amount of effective planning that is going into this assault on "Ant Kingdom" is building up a lot of tension. Knov understands the scale of what they are trying to accomplish and it's going to take effective teamwork and strategizing, as the Hunters are vastly outclassed. Too many stories will see a plan get ruined and it ends up being chaos and a 1v1 battle anyway. There are more layers to this.

- Now we have a sex-trafficking subplot thanks to the only NGL politician allowed to live for his irreplaceable foreign connections. I'm surprised the Ants had the wherewithal to spare him. Regardless, this gets Bae Palm into the Ant base in the hopes of using her crystal ball powers to keep an eye on the king himself.

I see why everyone raves about this arc so much. The entire cast gets so much development, especially The King. There's nothing I love more than when Manga dedicate huge amounts of time to developing their antagonists. And these interactions between the King and the Gungi Girl are incredible. Definitely the peak of this series so far.

Knov fucked around and found out.
Such a drastic character development in such a short span.
We are about to raid the castle.

There was no break for Morel. After his fight with Cheetu, he then faced another enemy,Leol. I did think Leol already survived long enough, though not as long as Cheetu, and it was about time to defeat him.

Killua's back and he recruited Ikalgo to be a part of the team. His words to Ikalgo melted my heart. He surely is the best friend one could ever have. I would have loved to have a friend like him.

I remember the part where Knov was invading the palace. It was so nerve-wracking I can barely breathe. I can fully understand why he broke mentally after doing his job of placing the exits inside the palace. If he had continued his arrogance like how he was in his first appearance, I would have mocked on how he reacted to Pouf's En. But he admitted it himself and wondered how can Gon and Killua chose to fight head-on despite having a close experience with the enemies' incredible power.

And the King. Omg, Meruem! This is one of the reasons why I love HxH. The author has the talent of writing the most complex villains. Meruem was nearing the line that separates their kind of creature to humans. The interesting part of him was that he was wavering. That was because of his encounter with Komugi. A frail young girl, who was not exactly smart but incredibly good at playing Gungi, who the King has no chance of winning against, has an absolute effect on the King's mind.

It was already time to attack the palace. They still have doubts about the success of their plans and they all feel uneasy but there's no going back.

This volume keeps the same quality and intelligence as the previous one. Every action is calculated and explained so you can know the way of thinking of the characters to sneak in the castle. It's like you were one of their companions and even in a manga they express such a worry about theirselves and his friends that seems like they are real. And that's what I like the most in Togashi's manga, more than the drawing (that isn't the best in the business for some people) it makes you think and learn while read. No one knows for sure what will happen at 12 am and even an ally can die.

The endgame is closing in and we're seeing several unexpected and impressively realistic character developments. While our heroes are finalising their plan to take down the chimera ant king, Morel proves yet again he's the real MVP during a showdown with Leol, Knov reaches a harrowing conclusion while on a dangerous mission, and without any help from our heroes the cruel king slips into a timely existential crisis. I'm on the edge of my seat!

I really like how Togashi has touched a lot on the "human" side of the ants now, with Meleoron and Ikarugo joining the Hunters and the development of the relationship between the King and Komugi. I wonder how Colt will deliver his promise to the queen and give Meruem his name...

A lot of character growth in this one, mostly from characters I wasn't expecting a bit of growth from. I'm impressed.

Some parts were running long, though, and were challenging my attention span. I'm looking forward to the final fight.

Okay I did NOT see this coming. Yes I still want the Hunters to defeat the Chimera ants because well they are hurting innocent humans but
But
But
The Chimera King is confused.
He was born with so much power and a hunger that he did not know was wrong
You can't teach a lion not to eat a lamb in its path.

The King has morals.
He was ashamed of his error when he misjudged Komugi, the Gungi champion and Tore. His. Arm. Off. To. Apologize.
He didn't know how else to apologize.
He's not human and never has been taught about a lot of things. He doesn't know how to process human emotions.
And and he just wants to know his name. Everyone has a name. But he doesn't know his and that makes me so sad.
I was yelling at my screen.
Your name is Meruem. That's what your mother named you before she died. And your name has a beautiful meaning.

And and the scene where he goes to kill Komugi but instead ends up saving her from harm?
I am bawling here. Someone save him from himself.
He doesn't know any other way.

How did this happen?
The writer is a genius!!! I did NOT see this pin coming. OHMYGOD.

It's coming. The battle is almost here and with the lead-up, we get a ton of new info. The King is also starting to question things and this is where this arc flourishes. Ants questioning things and figuring out who they are and realizing they are more than just violent forces or followers. Within the large amount of self evaluation, there is also some inner turmoil for one of our royal guards, an awesome fight between Morel and Cheetu...then Morel and Leol, Knov realizing he might be weaker than he thought, and Palm going in and trying to infiltrate from the inside. Everything is about to happen and the lead up is just as rewarding as the pay off will be. That ending was epic cliffhanger material. I'm ready.

reading about a character who is considered a “monster”, who murdered without second thought turn into this beautiful, complex creature, who begins to care and question who he is and why he is alive, all because a person who he considers to be frail, weak, pathetic showed him strength is not just physical strength is truly magnificent.

I cry at the sheer beauty of this evolution, because all the signs were there.

It seems we're about to reach the end of this arc.
The King is questioning himself where he never had before due to his new Gungi playmate- 'what strength is superior? - violence of course! It has the power to snuff out others' strengths- but why won't he get rid of his playmate? why doesn't he want to?- what was his purpose? why was he born?'
While he hasn't changed much of his opinion, he is starting to question himself due to his respect(?) for his Gungi playmate.

This is an excellent read like all the other Hunter x Hunter books. I would say that if you are looking for a darker portrayal of anime I would suggest this series. This particular book continues the story of what has been happening with the ants and the hunters. So I would highly recommend continuing the series just so he can see this amazing story line.
