I’m still mostly enjoying this series even though it has room for improvemenet.

I personally don’t like how this series keeps dumping a ton of new characters into the story during every volume, but I’m hoping that eventually it’ll get more manageable.

I really liked the exploration of the different magical abilities in this volume. I’m looking forward to seeing how everyone’s magic plays out throughout the course of the series.

Asta and Yuno grew up together, abandoned at the same church. They both determined to become Magic Knights... Yuno's abilities soon grew to genius levels of power and control while Asta didn't show even a spark of magic and made up for it by training hard physically. It became apparent to both when they received their grimores, Yuno a coveted 4-leaf clover and Asta an unheard of black 5-leaf clover, that they were each other's biggest competition when it came to achieving their goals of becoming the next sorcerer emperor.

I quite enjoy the flow of the story in Black Clover. There is certainly a focus on battles. It's a battle manga after all and I love that we aren't dwelling on these battles for volumes. A half a volume for little tiffs and maybe 2 halfs for major storyline battles. That makes sense and has a good flow. What is even MORE excellent is how chapters of back history and moments of reflection are fitted into the battles so that we understand motivations and bonds. This isn't just aimless fighting, the characters have reasons and experiences and we don't have to wait around while things don't make sense to learn WHY. I also enjoy the filler more between missions and battles. This time we learn about Mars and Noelle and Mimosa... then Asta officially meets the wizard king! That was quite fun but also furthered Noelle's story and their relationship!

The plot is still getting to know you level. We are still meeting people, getting a sense of who they are and what kind of people. I was really impressed how Yuno's squad had genuinely good people! We have Mimosa (I always love doomed crushes like hers on Asta!) but we also have Klaus who admitted he was wrong about Asta and Yuno!! And of course Yuno has his moment to shine!! There is a pissing contest started between the veteran knights and that is fun too! Asta makes these kinds of scenes pop! The villains aren't disappointing though! They are really neat and I look forward to how they deal with this necromancer!

The art is, of course, gorgeous! While I'm not a fan of the messy and conflicting colors on the cover of this volume the internal art is freakin the best! Asta's battle scenes are particularly gorgeous, when he obtains a new sword and I also enjoy the close ups of characters so that we can really see how each character design is different and unique!

Black Clover vol 3 was a fun volume where we get more of this grimore filled world even as Asta and Yuno learn what it means to be a magic knights!

⋆ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

This series remains solid fun shonen. Nothing amazing, typical of what you expect, but it's still pretty fun and the humor can be funny if a little juvenile.

Astra goes head to head with the main enemy of the last book but you learn of why he is the way he is. It's actually a pretty good backstory and you can see where he's coming from even if it is very battle royale background. But the next arc picks up quickly and you get to see the magic chain and who's on the very top. But the big breakout of the baddies makes this meet up very short.

Again, fun and enjoyable with solid art and good fight scenes. The story itself is basic and doesn't stride to be something over the top or special. Very happy being the middle ground manga and it's a quick read. I read it on the shonen jump app and it takes me about 20 minutes to read a volume. So for what it is, fun times for Astra and his crew.

A 3 out of 5.

The art is so epic! I love Asta and how strong he is from his own hard work. He also has thick skin, which is an awesome trait to have because he is sure of himself, regardless of the rude and meaningless words that are flung against him. Go Asta!

Also, Klaus isn’t too bad either. I like him :D

So after three books, I think I have a pretty clear image of what this series can offer. And I'm really glad that it is not bad. It has a lot of potentials and it works well in the realm of shonen. However, there are a few things that bug me - even though they are the shonen tropes.

The main hero Asta is just a meh guy, with special powers, incredibly strong guy with a dream he cannot possibly achieve. I got used to that, it's in Naruto, One Piece and many other series. So I try to ignore this fact and focus on other things.

I am surprised how much I like the art. I think the author is a really great artist and is passionate about their work. There are nice establishing shots, the action is smooth and the environment is not bad. What I do not like is some of the character designs and their similarities, but I understand the concept, that they are family and they should resemble each other.

In my mind what the series fails to deliver is a bigger scope and cohesive world. Yes, it is nice we have a dream of main (two main) protagonist, but the world feels hollow and technically very shallow. I am afraid that this is a trend of modern shonen writers who rather than go"show less", show a lot and think that it is enough but this doesn't work for me. I think it feels like later parts of Naruto, where everything was just too convenient.

With this comes the "goal" of the world - what are its issues? Other invading kingdoms? Well, yes but no. Demons? there was mentioned only one on the first page of the first volume. Bad people and division between aristocracy and peasants? Yes, but also no.

Characters are not bad - at least the main ones. They have limits and things that drag them down - and it's great to see them struggle and empathise. This cannot be said for some bad guys, but so far there were very little of those. I just hope they will not all be "evil for the sake of evil" or repeat the arc of Gaara from Naruto.

I would love this series to be a little bit better, a little bit more structured because it has some potential to be more fun. And the rule of cool is fine by me - but it cannot be overdone. We shall see in the next arc!

Another stellar volume of Black Clover!

Still in the treasure dungeon our heroes go up against their strongest foe yet! I love the tenacity of Asta and his crew. Even when they were backed up against the wall they never gave up!

Also that ending.... new villain + zombie magic? WTF! YES! YES! YES!

This was fantastic volume! Its the final fight between Asta and Mars and we get to see the latters origin and how emotional it was and his connection to the girl named Fana and then the way it ends is unique, a wild card for Yuno enters and then the meeting with Wizard King and the magic knights captain party and the drama that ensues there before we learn that the capital is under attack! It was a great volume and sets up so many things and great character development and shows how nobles look down upon peasants and how Asta wants to change that and it takes no break as its one thing after another plus the fight scenes convey the tension really well!

So far this series draaaaagggss. The most interesting part I'd argue was in the last chapter where it appears a zombie attack is happening??
I get the need to explain the inner workings of a magical world and such but still. As they say, good storytelling involves *showing* not *telling* and most of this book is spent just telling things to the reader.

This will be a combined review of the first through third volumes.

Black Clover follows the journey of two orphans who have been close friends since the day they were dropped on a church’s doorstep. Loud and rambunctious Asta is strangely gifted with no magic in a world where everyone possesses it, while quiet and patient Yuno appears to be one of the most talented magic-users of his age. The pair seeks to excel as members of the Magic Knights, until one of them will inevitably become the Wizard King.

PROS:

- Asta and Yuno’s relationship. It’s so nice to see a friendship between two people who are constantly inspiring each other. I love that each of their individual efforts pushes the other to work harder and do better, but not in a way that’s jealous or malicious. It’s pure, friendly competition!
- A well-defined magic system. Although I suspect there’s still plenty I have yet to learn about how magic works in Clover Kingdom, I really appreciate the attention to detail thus far. The rules and boundaries are easy to understand and pretty concrete.
- The Magic Knights factions. This is kind of an extension of the above; likewise, I only know so much about the factions at this point. But! What I’ve learned so far is very interesting, especially in terms of class structure and social stigmas.
- Concrete development? I like that Asta’s aspirations in relation to rising among the ranks of the Magic Knights, then becoming the Wizard King, feel like a goal with concrete steps and aims. The same could go for Noelle’s intentions of learning how to control her magic. It feels very well structured (as opposed to, say, Naruto’s more idealized system).

CONS:
- I don’t really have any at the moment! I think it’s still too soon to say what I feel. This isn’t a bad thing. It’s just a side effect of being a shounen manga, where chapters are short and fast paced, so you need to cover more ground than you actually think to get a good idea of how you feel about it as a whole.

FINAL RATING: N/A

In this volume we get the conclusion to the fight with the diamond villain in the dungeon. They manage to defeat him with the tactic of… a fairy coming out of nowhere and saves their ass. That’s correct, they didn’t defeat him, they were plot armored because the author doesn’t give a damn.

The heroes go to the capital where they see a whole bunch of magic knights getting promoted for their good work in various missions. None of the Bulls gets a promotion though, despite having saved the world a few days earlier, and the wizard king who decides the rankings knows of this very well. The author doesn’t care one bit.

The high ranked magic knights are acting like school bullies to the girl from before, despite being seasoned warriors in their 30s. The author can’t write someone acting as an adult. Heck, he presents the ruler of the kingdom to be a spoiled manlet. He just has the protagonist defending the girl from the bullies, as if we are in a schoolyard and not in the palace of the wizard king. And it’s not like she didn’t deserved to be ridiculed. She forgot to use her own super move and has no control over magic. Asta protecting her is the same as saying she doesn’t need to be scolded for her failures and she’s fine if she remains a brat all her life. Just like the spoiled king. Very nice message for the audience, mr author.

Towards the end of the volume, a villain attacks the city, seeking revenge for getting kicked out from the magic knights because his powers were too dangerous. And he proves them right by attacking the city. It’s like the author doesn’t realize his villains are unable to defend their own claims, like dumb children in schools.

Series Info/Source: This is the third volume in the Black Clover manga series.

Story (4/5): I enjoyed this a lot more than the 2nd volume in the series. This volume wraps up the dungeon delving story arc that started in vol 2. It was well done and there are some interesting new developments in the story.

Characters (4/5): This book continues the strange frenemy relationship between Asta and Yuno. I enjoyed some of the other characters that were developed and really liked that we didn’t have a ton of new characters added. It was fun to get time to follow and know all the characters that were added in volume 2.

Setting (4/5): I really enjoyed the magical dungeon setting that part of the story takes part in. It was also fun to see the characters journey to the capital city.

Writing/Drawing Style (4/5): This was well written and easy to follow. Some of the fight scenes are a bit muddled and it’s hard to see what is going on. For the most part though, the drawing quality is on the high end and this is easy to follow.

My Summary (4/5): Overall I am enjoying the series. My 13 year old son absolutely loves this series, so I will continue reading it since I am gradually buying the books for him. It’s a fun fantasy shounen series with a lot of action and magic.

Everything in Black Clover goes like this:

[Character man]: YOU CANNOT DEFEAT ME
Asta: I HAVE FRIENDS!!!
[Character man]: OH NO HE'S SO STRONG
[Character girl]: UWU HE'S SO HAWT

Add in other tropes as necessary. I don't think Tabata even tries to do any sort of world-building since we get a page showing all the names of the different ranks and it's like... JUNIOR Magic Knight and INTERMEDIATE Magic Knight and SENIOR Magic Knight and GRAND Magic Knight but where is BALL-SNIFFER Magic Knight or FART-CHUGGER Magic Knight or anything like that, huh? Then we get like 4 pages of massive speech bubble monologues introducing a bunch of new characters with different powers and I don't know if anyone at Shonen Jump told Tabata that putting wikipedia character summaries into your manga makes the information memorable but whoever did they should be fired.

This particular volume took me longer to finish, mainly due to my personal life, but also a good chunk of the storyline took place in the dungeon...and when the plot of a manga series (or when I watch an anime episode) is at a standstill in the journey due to a bunch of battles going on simultaneously, it can start to become monotonous. But once the story began to segue away from the dungeon, the plot began to pick up more and we got to see a lot more character building relationships that personally always makes me want to read more! Tabata also ended this particular volume with a cliffhanger that sets up the next part of the story arc very well, in my opinion.

I can’t express how much I love this manga series, and the characters that are brought to life in this world. In this book, we are briefly introduced to a couple of my all time favourite characters in the series, Fuegoleon and Leopold Vermillion. Can’t get enough of these Crimson Lions brothers, and I’m looking forward to meeting them more thoroughly in the manga books to come.
It still follows Asta and his adventure with the Black Bulls and all the fun moments that are packaged with that.
Overall, a very enjoyable read and I can’t wait to continue on with this amazing manga series.

Okay, this is going to be random, but there's one specific part of this volume that caught my eye.

During the fight between the Black Bulls, Golden Dawn, and Mars, Mimosa mentions that the royals scoff at working hard. She says that they think it's beneath them and only peasants do that. And I don't know what it is, but out of everything this volume threw at me, that's the thing that stuck out. I think the reason is because this puts the royals on a whole different level of douchebaggery, but also because it's such stupid elitist bullshit that my mind went into overdrive trying to make sense of it. Not that I dislike this thinking, mind you, but just how fucking dumb it and yet makes perfect sense with their characters.

Speaking of the royals, as of right now most of them are pretty much the same characters with slightly different speech patterns and wholly different magic. While I don't have anything against Tabata's method of using Shounen Jump cliches at every corner, the royals are easily the most disappointing group of cliches so far. As far as I can tell, the only purpose they serve is to be an obstacle for our heroes to overcome and prove them wrong. Quite frankly, I'm kind of okay with this because at least the Wizard King, Klaus, and Mimosa are nice and balance out the assholes, but still they're easily the worst part of this series so far.

Speaking of the Wizard King, I fucking love him. I love how personable he is while still maintaining this air of importance and aloofness. His interactions with Asta and Yuno are fucking adorable, I want to see more of him, please!

On a completely unrelated note, I feel like Asta's and Yuno's rivalry is similar to Hinata's and Kageyama's from Haikyu and I am so there for it! I love me a healthy yet competitive rivalry!

Finally, I'm having a blast seeing all of the creative ways magic can be used. I'm also absolutely appalled at how horribly magic can be used to harm others. The discussion on class and magic usage is also pretty neat, I'm assuming this new villain will be opening up a discussion on how classism can severely derail a person mentally. I kinda hope he offs some of those royals. Wouldn't be too sad if he did.

That's all I've got for now. This was a great volume, I'm having a blast reading this series!

This was a pretty solid volume. The majority of the volume is dedicated to the fight between Mars and Asta (along with Yuno and others). I liked the dungeon arc overall. Asta and Yuno powered up after facing a dangerous enemy. The banquet scene was also really good. This volume is also the start of a new arc called Royal Capital Arc. In this arc, we will be able to see some of the main villains in the series. I enjoyed it but nothing too extraordinary.
