Stonefire Dragons #5

Surrendering to the Dragon

Rate this book
Nikki Gray has reason to hate the dragon hunters—they brutally murdered one of her friends a year ago. Not only that, they have caused havoc on several of the British dragon clans, injuring countless individuals. Determined to defeat the hunters by kidnaping their leader, Simon Bourne, she teams up with a human male in the British special forces. After six months of work, they’re finally ready to carry out their mission and capture Bourne. However, one kiss derails their plans and changes their lives forever.

At the request of his sister, Rafe Hartley agrees to work with the dragon-shifters. After all, the dragon hunters are a pain in his arse and the fewer of them, the better. The woman assigned as his Stonefire liaison, however, is the same one he hurt four years ago in Afghanistan. Pushing aside their past, they learn to work together. Yet with each passing encounter, he is drawn to the lively, stubborn woman. He finally gives in to his attraction and kisses the dragonwoman. What follows turns his life upside down.

Rafe and Nikki must now decide what to do with their futures. Can they still work together and find a way to capture Simon Bourne? Or, will their fated kiss result in a divide that can’t be healed?

Donovan returns to Stonefire with a novel that will knock your socks off. Vivid descriptions bring this vividly crafted world to life as readers are kept on their toes with plot twists and turns galore. I love how readers are front and centre as laws are being made & the status quos are being challenged. This intricately crafted world is ever changing as events occur to change previous beliefs and necessities. It’s all so real. At the same time, suspense runs high and danger lurks around the corner. Topped off with sizzling chemistry and hot romance, how can one go wrong?

I love how approachable yet larger than life the characters in this novel are. The role reversal in this one was priceless. Donovan flipped the entire male/female shifter roles while also maintaining an alpha male to beat all alphas. The Rafe/Kai animosity was integral in showing Rafe’s personality (and just plain comical to boot). His past with respect to dragons was heartbreaking but his strength admirable. And the way that he redirects his alpha instincts around Nikki? Fantastic! I enjoyed seeing Nikki’s inner thoughts. The different ways that she felt she needed to prove herself and her unique place in the clan was fascinating. Reliving Nikki’s past was emotional and shocking. It really served to create a connection with the character. The relationship between these two was awesome. The mate claim frenzy was as hot as ever, but the way that they truly got to know one another took it to a whole new level.

Donovan has once again created a suspenseful and sizzling hot novel that had me surrendering to it. She pulled me into the intricate and unforgettable world that she’s created to escape reality for a short while.

This is a nice twist on the dragon fated mates with it being a Dragonwoman who goes into a mating frenzy when the man she crushed on in the military walks back into her life for a second time. Will she find her happily ever after or will she break him before they can get started? The witty banter, the heat and spice and a great plot of the underlying storyline that runs through all the books so far, keeps this series and this book in particular on the top of my fun reads list! A spicy second chances romance that will warm you up on a cold winter day or night! If you haven't started this series, you absolutely should. It is a fun read and offers hours of entertainment. I do recommend that you start with book 1 though as the storyline wraps through all the books and each book builds a bit more backstory for the characters.

Rafe y Nikki, una pareja sin igual que por un impulso de dejarse llevar por la atracción que sentían, llegaron a más.

Aún con todo en contra hicieron hasta el último esfuerzo y lograron parte de lo propuesto.

Me gustó ☺️

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 Unicorns - I loved it!!!
***Received the ebook from the author for an honest review

The cover is awesome as I’ve come to expect for one of Jessie’s book.

This is the 7th Stonefire Dragons book. I have read all of Jessie’s dragon shifter stories. I recommend reading all the books and in the order they were written including the new Lochguard spin off too! This is a adult series due to the steamy content.

I can only say this about 2 or 3 authors, but I have yet to read a book of Jessie’s that I have not thoroughly enjoyed. I look forward to every book that comes out in most of her series’. I think there is only one that I haven’t read yet, but I have already bought them all. I will be picking up this book in the future too. My free time has been very scarce recently, so I didn’t get to sit down and read this straight through like I would have loved to.

This story is Rafe and Nikki’s story. I’ve been looking forward to Nikki’s story as there have been hints toward their mating in other books. This book was packed with action as all of her books are, but it also has its built in humor that makes me laugh as I read. I always get attached to the characters and invested in what happens to them. Loved this book!

I highly recommend the whole series to any shifter lover especially if you love dragons. I can’t wait to see what Jessie comes up with next!!!

Go Dragon, Go!

I swear I will never tire reading about these Dragons, you do know who the real star in the story is ? That's right the Dragon, the way they talk to their humans always gets me, I cannot put it down until I finish

Nikki Gray is a very independent dragon protector for Stonefire, she has always been secretely in love with a human since her days in the service. Problem is that human hurt her very badly back then, not physically, but maybe that would have hurt less. He is no other than brother of her boss's mate Jane and she has to work with him everyday trying to bring down the man that would wipe all dragons from the face of the earth. There is only one big problem, every time he is near him her dragon flares up because she is dead set on having the human. The tough, strong Nikki is about to lose control of her dragon and all because of a moment of weakness.

Rafe Hartley is a strong Alpha male and for some reason Nikki brings out the animal in him, too bad it's not a dragon. He behaves like a total neandrethal when he is around her, but is it anger that drives him to act that way, guilt because of the way he treated her all those years ago, or is it something else.

Read this riveting story and find out what drives these two and what direction they will take on the road to happiness.

Again I have to give the dragon thumbs up, she really rocks!

I really can't get enough of this series. Nikki and Rafe wasn't your typical romance story they both had their guard up. Nikki wants to be seen as more than just the first offspring born to human sacrifice and Rafe wants to show Nikki that he not the same guy that broke her heart in the past. I love the fact that what happened in there past did bring them closer together as Nikki at every opportunity try to push Rafe away he was there to prove her wrong which in the end made them a stronger couple. I can't wait to see what else is in store for this series.

Jessie did it again. She makes you lose yourself in the story and wish you where the female character. We follow this couple who have a past. Can they move past what happened to accept what fate has in store? Will they be able to have the love they seek and a life together? What is in store for the Dragon Clans next?

*Sigh* another bad book.

This author is giving me whiplash. One book is fantastic and then the next is god awful. This book was not good. What should have been a great point for the females in this series, made females look bitchy, selfish, entitled & stupid. The main female character was an absolute spoiled brat that was only interested in herself. I am all for working mothers, in fact I am a huge advocate of it, but Nikki acted petulant and heartless. She threw a tantrum and was going to throw her baby to the nearest person wanting a child just because she did not want to lose her job, even though she was told more than once that she wouldn't. Nikki was not even going to let the father of the child raise them and became angry at Rafe for wanting to raise the kid because she thought that meant she would then look bad and have to look after the child. Nikki was a HORRIBLE character, that really showed the worst of female in this series, but she was not the only one. We got introduced to the first female clan leader in this book and she was nothing but a bitchy, self absorbed no it all, that thought she was better than everyone else. It was truly appalling the female behavior in this book.

Rafe on the other hand was a great character and I feel it got the short end of the stick. The stuff he had to put up with from Nikki was horrible and in real life she would be known as a controlling Karen, bully and possibly even an abuser.

The continuity of the book was good though, and seeing a lot of the previous characters is why I did not skip this book altogether. I was glad to finally see the end to Johnathan Christie, the prick, got what he deserved.

Nikki Gray is the first baby born to the first sacrifice. Her biological mother was also the true mate of her father but Nikki's mother was a selfish woman who could not handle the dragons and the moment Nikki was born she ran from Stonefire, leaving Nikki's father shattered. But her father loved and adored Nikki and when Nikki was six, met the love of his life and second chance and she became Nikki's mum in all ways bar one. Nikki is a Protector who is set to prove she is more than a baby making machine.

Rafe Hartley is a human in the British Special Forces. His sister Jane recently mated Kai Sutherland of Stonefire and they asked Rafe for assistance with the dragon hunters and the crooked DDA agent. But his partner with Stonefire is Nikki, the woman he hurt four years ago in Afghanistan.

Rafe and Nikki work together for months when they finally gave in and kissed. Which then set off Nikki's dragon and making her go into the mating frenzy because Rafe is Nikki's true mate. Nikki decided to complete the frenzy but was going to give the baby up for adoption whether Rafe or anyone else liked it. Rafe agreed to the frenzy but did not know about her wanting to put the baby up for adoption when its born.

After the frenzy, Nikki was an absolute bitch and treated Rafe like dirt and became angry when he told her he would be raising their kid with or without her. She acted like a total brat for most of the book.

Rafe and Nikki spent a lot of time together and eventually got through their baggage. Nikki finally accepts Rafe as her mate and decided to keep the baby with him. But before they could mate they had to find a way for the law to change because the law says no female dragon shifter can mate a human.

But with the help of the entire clan and allies, Rafe was able to bring down the new director of DDA, Johnathan Christie, after they got him on tape admitting he had people murdered and attacked Stonefire so he could become the new director and hurt the dragon shifters that way. He was immediately removed as director and will be going on trial for murder.

The new director agreed to have a special license for the mating between Nikki and Rafe, so long as they do it on tv and in front of everyone, human and dragon to help publicity. They agreed because they wanted to be together and to help other female dragons if their mate turns out to be human.

As I said above, this was not a good book and I would not recommend this one. I will not be rereading this one either. But I will continue with the series because every other book good, my favorite is still Kai and Jane's book, Reawakening the Dragon. Closely followed by The Dragon Guardian. Those two alone make me continue the series with hope it will get better.

DRAGOLICIOUSLY CUTE, SERIOUSLY SEXY AND DELIGHTFULLY ENTERTAINING !!!
Title: Surrendering to the Dragon
Series: Stonefire Dragons
Author: Jessie Donovan
Designation: Book Seven of Series, Standalone Full length Novel, NO Cliffhanger
My Rating: FIVE DRAGO-LICIOUS STARS*****
Oh my! Oh my! Oh my! I love it! Jessie Donovan has dazzled her fans yet again with Surrendering to the Dragon, a full length standalone novel and seventh release in her bestselling Stonefire Dragons Series. I've been a diehard Jessie Donovan fan for several years and devour everything she writes. I adore dragon shifters and love paranormal romance, so put the two together and I'm in heaven! Jessie Donovan always gives me the perfect combination of both and this book is no exception! Surrendering to the Dragon is an exciting, fast-paced, well crafted paranormal tale filled to the brim with heart-pounding danger, heart-wrenching drama, heart-stopping action, spine-tingling suspense, steamy passion and heartwarming romance. Sigh.... So dreamy!

But I digress, let's talk about the components of this story. The dialogue is smart, snappy, well executed, at times funny and flows effortlessly. The narrative is beautifully written in the third person with multiple points of view. The primary perspectives are from the two protagonists, seasoned British Army Special Forces Officer Rafe Hartley and courageous Stonefire Dragonwoman Protector Nikola Gray, and if those two names sound familiar, they should. Both of these characters have been popping up frequently in quite a few of Donovan's recent releases and most of Donovan's fans have been eagerly awaiting their story. We first met Rafe Hartley when he was introduced as Jane Hartley's surly, alpha brother in Reawakening the Dragon, the fifth book of the Series. Protector Nikola Gray aka Nikki was also introduced earlier in the series but made an unforgettable impression on me when she was captured and tortured by the dragon hunters in the second book of the series, Seducing the Dragon which featured Stonefire's Clan Leader, Bram Moore-Llewellyn and Department of Dragon Affairs Inspector, Evie Marshall. I'd already fallen head over heels for these two stubborn, larger-than-life characters long before this book was released. I knew when Donovan finally told their story, it would be spectacular and indeed it was! Rafe and Nikki were a perfect pairing and played off each other brilliantly. The interaction between Rafe and Nikki is electric, their banter hilarious, their attraction obvious to all but them, and their sexual chemistry, sizzling hot. The conversations these dragon shifters have in their heads with their dragons is outrageously funny and beyond entertaining. Interestingly, Donovan also gives us a third perspective from Aaron Caruso, another previously introduced character who up until this point has only been given a minor role in any of the stories. Aaron is a Protector who recently returned to Stonefire to become Head Protector Kai Sutherland's second in command after a two year stay with his mother's clan in Italy. After reading this story, I believe we may be hearing more from Aaron Caruso and that's all I'm saying! I won't be the one to spill the beans about him meeting Teagan O'Shea, the closely guarded secret female leader of Clan Glenbough in Ireland. What? Oops! My lips are sealed but I'm just sayin', Donovan may very well be setting up a future story arc. Donovan is an exceptionally gifted storyteller who excels at creating unique, imaginative worlds and populating them with captivating, engaging characters who literally explode from the pages and totally capture your heart. You can mention almost any character's name from either dragon series to a Jessie Donovan fan and they will immediately be able to tell you who they are, to what clan they belong, whether they have a mate and if so, their name, as well as their occupation and if they have any children. These characters have become family which is another thing I truly enjoy about Donovan's stories. The characters of each of her dragon shifter series have regular recurring roles and even cross series, so it's not unusual to see Lochguard characters make an appearance in a Stonefire story and Stonefire characters making cameos in a Lochguard book. It's bloody brilliant which brings me to another point. This story is a full-length standalone novel with its own happy ending but because there is a common underlying, interconnected storyline running throughout the entire series, I would highly recommend reading all of the previous releases. The author always gives ample backstory in each book enabling a reader to easily follow each story making it possible to enjoy each book as a standalone, however it will help in familiarizing yourself with the world as well as the characters and most definitely enrich your reading experience.

For the last six months Protector Nikki Gray has worked tirelessly on a plan to locate Simon Bourne, the villainous leader of the dragon hunters. Head Protector Kai Sutherland is determined to use every resource available, even if that includes the help of his human mate's brother, Army Special Forces officer Rafe Hartley. Kai has ordered Nikki to coordinate their efforts to capture Bourne with Rafe who has taken two weeks leave after receiving a request for help from his sister Jane Hartley, a former BBC reporter. Jane now lives on Stonefire with Rake and now works alongside Bram's mate, former DDA inspector Evie Marshall Moore-Llewellyn and Tristan's mate, newly published author Melanie Hall-MacLeod to eliminate the prejudice against the dragon shifters and stop their persecution at the hands of the Dragon Knights, and the dragon hunters who kill the dragon shifters for their blood which they sell on the black market for its healing properties. Dragon shifters are required to serve in the military before they can become Protectors. Nikki did a tour in Afghanistan which is where she first met Rafe Hartley four years ago, and where he broke her heart. They may not have had a relationship but the heartache caused by the cruelty of his words is not something she ever wants to repeat. For the sake of her clan, she must find the strength to work with him but she'll never allow him to know her true feelings. Unfortunately, Nikki's dragon has other ideas and we all know by now, what a dragon wants, they take! Oh my!

The last thing in the world Rafe Hartley wants to do is work with the arrogant Stonefire dragon shifters. He doesn't particularly care for them at all and especially dislikes his sister's mate, Head Protector Kai Sutherland. But his sister Jane has requested his help so for her, he'll oblige, even if it means working the feisty Protector Nikola Gray. Yeah, they have a history and he may have acted like a complete arse four years ago, but he had his reasons and will certainly never admit it, at least not to her. Hmm.... I think the human doth protest too much. Rafe may not be ready to acknowledge his feelings for Nikki but that doesn't stop him from being attracted to the lovely, capable dragonwoman. When Rafe makes the mistake of finally giving in to his undeniable attraction and steals a single kiss, he has no idea his action would set into motion a chain of events that could not only jeopardize the mission, but also affect both his and Nikki's futures as well as the futures of all dragon shifters in the U.K. Here we go again! When these two stubborn, unlikely lovers butt heads, scales fly, sparks flare, passions ignite and Stonefire may never be the same!

When reviewing and rating a book, I always ask myself several question. First, what did I love about this book? I actually loved everything about this story. It was imaginative, exceptionally well crafted, well written, well edited and professionally formatted with a beautiful cover and captivating cast of well developed characters. It gave me all the elements I love in a great book including danger, drama, action, adventure, suspense, romance and mind blowing sex. Second, what didn't I like about this story? Not a darn thing! Third, Would I recommend this book? You bet and I am but only for adult readers since it does contain a little explicit language and some steamy, dreamy love scenes. Yowza! Fourth, will I read this author again? Absolutely! Just as soon as she releases her next book! And finally, was I entertained? Oh lawd yes! I was definitely entertained! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!

THE ANGST WAS NICE WHILE IT LASTED, THOUGH ONLY AT THE BEGINNING. THE REST WAS PRETTY MUCH SWEET AND CUTE...AND WELL AVERAGE.

OUR HERO may have hurt our heroine's feelings four years ago but now when he realizes that he's her dragon's mate, deep down he knows that this time he won't let her go, even if the result is having a baby together. Rafe isn't getting any younger and for a moment he sees an image of a little girl who will be his and Nikki's, he doesn't want to give up that chance and he's also ready to settle down. The only challenge is convincing the stubborn woman that he's not going to up and leave.

OUR HEROINE is part Asian, part Caucasian and has her doubts when Rafe agrees to mate with her and have a baby. She plans to give their baby up for adoption, but later rethinks about it when she's finally realizing that Rafe's not kidding when he says that he's here to stay. While juggling their newly found relationship, they are also trying to take down politicians who were in leads with dragon hunters.

OVERALL it was nothing terribly exciting or romantic. I think I'm numb, but it's still a good story with a little angst, lots of passion and just good ol'sweetness.

Dnf. Rafe has no choice in what happens with his future.

***************SPOILERS AHEAD! SORRY***********

I really liked Nikki in previous books, but in this one she came across as a b…h. She kisses Rafe and realises he’s her true mate. Rafe doesn’t want to see Nikki in pain so agrees to mate with her. She falls pregnant and says she’s giving it up for adoption when it’s born!!! He has no say in the matter and has to do a compromise with her, just to stay in her life. 😡😡😡 If this was a man who was saying this, there would be outrage, and rightly so!! Especially if the woman practically had to beg to be given some choice in the matter!!!!

I carried on reading, hoping it would get better. As they are hunting the man who is in charge of the terrorists who hate dragons. Everything he says is wrong with her and she goes off on a rant about everything. Sigh…….

I just want to read a romance. Not a visit stand argument between the two of them. Also, how come the human women who have babies with male dragons, are treat with respect by Bram and the other high ranking dragons. Yet Rafe is talked to very dismissively and called human, as an insult??

Awesomeness inside this book!

Each of these stories are so well written, and as I end one I think that's my favorite until I start the next! Each storyline is unique in its own way yet they each add such depth to the series. I love each of the characters. Each are likeable in their own way, yet as the story unfolds they become many faceted and complex. The dragons have a simple needs, yet all add complexity to their human. Still my favorite dragon so far is Nikki's. I look forward to being introduced to more as the series continues yet I don't think that I will love any other dragon as much as hers. The audio narration brings this series to life, and he does an amazing job bringing the dragons personalities out! I have already purchased and started the next book in this series and also the books in the spin-off series.

Next to Arabella and Finn, Nikki and Rafe are my second favorite couple of the series.

Rafe really steps up and accepts responsibility for the way he treated Nikki in the past. He allows for a change to his alpha tendencies as he realizes Nikki's full capabilities. He's unused to having a woman be strong enough to challenge him, let alone keep up with him.

Nikki is honestly such a fierce and loyal protector. I was so happy to finally see her find happiness. Especially with someone whom she wanted for so long. She really pushes Rafe to be a man for her and makes it clear that she won't accept him for anything less than she deserves.

They truly are a great pairing and I absolutely loved their story. (And the furthering of the Stonefire clan's story)

I did like this story. It is great to see Nikki overcoming her past and making her way in the dragon world as more than just a female/babymaker. Having her mate be a human makes sense, there needs to be new male thought in the dragon world and Rafe is the perfect man. He is military so he fits well with the male mindset of the dragons but he is human with the human thoughts of women's rights.

I did think this story was starting to go just a little tooo far into sweet territory. I like sweetness and "sexy times" but there could have been a little bit less and still made for a good story.

I love the narrator of the series. He does a wonderful job with the voices and timing.

Wonderful!

As avid a fan of the males of this series as I am, I am so pleased to see more of the dragon women getting their stories told. While Arabella's was heart wrenchingly poignant, Nikki's was heartwarming with her strength to not only battle her PTSD, but to show that while females can do most of what males can just as well if not better, we still have a long way to go to overcome stereotypes and prejudices. The author has beautifully brought this to light while exploring it on this telling. I look forward to more stories, especially Sid's!

There's a little line between sweet and cheesy. This book started great, all the way until almost the end. Then everything started to be all sweetness and lovey-dovey feelings. Then sex scenes that I just wanted for them to end so I could continue reading the story and finally end the book.

Don't get me wrong. The majority of the book was great. Even the ending is very good. The thing is that I did not like that part about 80-97 per cent of the book. And that feeling of need to rush things so I could start the next book is something that makes me rest some stars. Sorry.

Human male and dragonshifter female this time, which was a nice change.

Rafe is assigned to be the human liaison between the army and the dragonshifters, Nikki is the dragonshifter he needs to work with. Something happened 4 years ago when Nikki confessed she had a crush on Rage, and he nastily rejected her.

Now, they only tolerate each other for the mission, but when a sexualy frustrated kiss leads to them being true mates, their path takes a different turn.

I enjoyed the switch of roles and even more of the overall plot, which a few things were settled and as always great spice.

I was so looking forward to this book. A forbidden human male? Reuniting with an unrequited love? I expected there to be some solid build-up to Nikki and Rafe finally giving in and getting together... but it happened in the first chapter! I don't understand why the author would squander those sources of tension. I also thought that a human male would add something new to this world, maybe a different perspective, but Rafe acts like a slightly less controlling "alpha" dragonman.

It just didn't come close to meeting my expectations.

Rafe and Niki make a great couple. They are always arguing with each other until that first kiss, then the mating frenzy kicks in. Since they are so passionate in everything they do, they bring that passion into their relationship. What the decide to so once Niki is pregnant is up in the air.
The dragon hunters make an appearance as normal. They must track down the one responsible. The new prime minister is about to be sworn in too. Who will it be?

Brilliant Series

Surrendering to the Dragon (Stonefire British Dragons Book 7) by Jessie Donovan. Dragon shifter Nikki knew human Rafe from her time in the army. Now he was at Stonefire and she was working with him. One kiss sent Nikki into a mating frenzy, Nikki and Rafe are mates. Although Nikki didn’t want a mate, at least not yet, Rafe wanted to have Nikki. It took a wee while but Nikki and Rafe fell in love.

I really enjoyed Nikki and Rafe's book. I am glad that they were able to work out all of their issues and Rafe seemed like a douche in the beginning but I see why he was the way he was. still does not excuse the way he treated Nikki though.

I want to know more about Dr. Sid and what is really going on with her and her dragon.

Nikki and Rafe’s story was funny, moving and beautiful. I loved learning about both of their stories from working together in the army to learning about trust and love. Nikki is definitely one of my favorite female dragon-shifters. When I almost finished the end, it brought me to tears. Jessie, you have such a creative mind to creating two powerful, humorous characters.

I've waited for this story for a while and I was not disappointed. The relationship between these two is explosive. Snarky comments and a passion that fires the sole. A great combination that is a perfect addition to this wonderful series.

Loved it!

Absolutely loved reading this book, Surrendering to the Dragon, Stonefire British Dragons #7. In this book we have Nikki, the first female Dragon shifter finding her true mate, Rafe, a human male. They have a bumpy beginning but ends with a HEA.

Surrendering to the Dragon. #7

Rage is a Human Soldier. He is in special forces. When in service he worked with Dragons. Dragons that wanted to be protectors have to serve 2 Years in the service.
That’s where he met Nikki. Read to see what happens.
