Maddy's Boy Pros & Cons . . . Brian—Super cute / hangs with my friends / goes to my high school / my boyfriend! David—Says I'm a spoiled princess / hates my friends / has amazing blue eyes / cooked me an unbelievable dinner / annoyingly irresistible! Summer for Maddy Sinclaire starts as a blur of house parties and dips in the pool—until she's caught throwing an unauthorized beachside bash. As punishment, her parents send her off to Napa Valley, where she'll spend her free time working on the family vineyard. Even with her boyfriend, Brian, miles away, Maddy's about to discover that the vineyard is a very romantic place. It's vast, sunny, magical . . . and there's another boy just waiting to steal her heart.
Hailey Abbott grew up in Southern California, where she split her time between creative writing and creative beaching. She is the author of Summer Boys, Next Summer: A Summer Boys Novel, The Bridesmaid, Getting Lost with Boys, and The Secrets of Boys. Hailey now lives in New York City.
Her first book was Summer Boys, published in 2004, the first of a series. It was described as "escapist beach reading" by the School Library Journal.
I just couldn't finish this book. The cover and synopsis looked decent, but I just did not like the main character. She came off as a spoiled rich kid who had everything and whined about having to spend the summer w/ her parents while they lived out their dream: to open a vineyard. They first left her home for the summer, only to arrive back home a few hrs. later to their house being trashed by a huge party. And she wonders why they ended up taking her with them for the summer? Because she's spoiled and not to be trusted for two seconds after they're out the door? The references to her expensive clothes, shoes and sunglasses just put me off. If there is anything I hate in a main character is one that comes off spoiled, clueless and into nothing but expensive toys who also has no regards for anyone else's feelings except for their own ones with their selfish ways. This book is going back to the library where it should've stayed.
This was definitely the perfect summer read. Light, fun, and romance-filled -- what girl could resist? While it was your classic clichéd story, I thought it was super-cute and wish that I could be as lucky with guys as Maddy!!! I enjoyed seeing Maddy’s character develop from a rich snob to a down-to-earth girl who could appreciate the beauty of nature.
I’m not going to lie, at first I despised Maddy; she was whiny and stuck-up, but as the book progressed she became very likable and relatable. The book was also very funny. The author created a ton of humorous situations where I found myself laughing out loud. For fans of Hailey Abbott’s previous books, THE OTHER BOY will not disappoint!
Maddy Sinclaire has just started what she thought as the best summer of her life; no parents, party at her house, amazing friends and the hottest boyfriend until her parents busted her party and forced her to go with them to Napa Valley to help with their vineyard. Miles away from the what she thought a summer of her life she discovers a new self and a possible new love when she met David. But will this last?
This was definitely a fast read for me. The story is light and funny with just a little touch of drama. At first I was a little bit hesitant with reading the book but I was happy that I did not listen to that little voice in my head. It was worth reading. A story that will take you to the mind of a 15 year old have a feel to it.
A love story that is yes I have to admit I have read in many books about a city girl falling in love with a country boy but it is witty and has fresh feel to it. The way the story was played out was fun and has a young vibe to it. I really enjoyed reading this book. it loosened up all those tight knots that I had because of reading really serious books. The book showed that experiences can really change a person.
I was a little disappointed though that she was still being defined by her so called "life" and what her friends think. Although the story ended happily I wish that Maddy should have developed a stronger backbone. But I guess I could give her a little slack I mean she still young she still needs more time to mature and her maturing faster would just make the story farce. The fact that she is ready to face all the challenges that might come with her decision goes to show that she is growing up fine.
It took so long for this book to get good that by the time it finally did, it just ended. I hated Maddy right from the start. Spoiled stuck-up brat. If I wanted to read the inner thoughts of a brooding 16-year old who hates her parents, I'd pick up my own journals from 1999. She was insufferable! (Just as I'm sure I was at her age, but way less rich!). But David was super cute and he was really the only reason I kept reading, with hopes that Maddy's character would evolve into someone I could stand. It worked out and the book ended up being really sweet and cute (the scene where David was going to attempt to teach Maddy to cook after her disastrous lunch was adorable!), and then summer was over and that was that. I feel like it took too long to read about a character I hated and when she finally did have some character growth, it was over and I was left fairly disappointed.
i did enjoy this book and it was a cute summer read, but the ending felt very rushed and weird. i wish i could be Maddy tho, falling in love with a cute dude in Napa? um yes please
You just got to a vineyard that your parents dragged you to for the whole summer because of one party. The place looks like it was from the 1800s and you are in the middle of nowhere. What are you going to do all summer long? All of a sudden, a guy about your age with curly brown hair and amazing blue eyes appears out of nowhere. Hmm, maybe your summer will be interesting after all. The book, The Other Boy by Hailey Abbott is a heart-wrenching page turner that will keep you up all night! The main character, Maddy, is a soon to be high school senior that has the house to herself for the summer. But when the first party ends with her parents forgetting something from home, Maddy’s life is obviously over when her parents then decide to bring her up with them to the vineyard. But as Maddy meets a cute new guy named David and starts realizing the amazing atmosphere of Napa, she changes into a totally different person. So will Maddy find love at a romantic vineyard or hold on to her selfish boyfriend back home? The author’s purpose of the book is to show how people can change and to show how nature is a beautiful thing. The vineyard is such a magical place that anything can happen. Personally, I do not like the author’s style of writing the book. I find that the words and vocabulary are too easy that sometimes it makes the book less interesting. If there was better vocabulary and word choice, it could have been more exciting to read. The dialogue in the book is used very well throughout the book. It is very easy to understand and not complicated at all. I felt like the author could have had more descriptive words in her writing. There were not a lot of advanced level words that were used, like I said before. I also felt like she could have explained how beautiful the vineyard was. Character development played a huge part in The Other Boy! That is generally what the whole book is about. Maddy seems selfish and snobby at the beginning but through the book she transforms into someone she never thought she would. I love how the author described her transformation through her boyfriend, friends and her parents. The pacing of the book was perfect for the plot of the story. It was not too slow or not too fast! I enjoyed the plot very much because it seemed very realistic and romantic. It was the perfect love story in the perfect setting! Finally, the ending was predictable yet very cute! The ending was a good surprise that made you close the book and smile to yourself. I recommend this book to girls who love a romantic drama. Also if you are someone who does not like big words or super long books this is the perfect book for you! If you liked, Forbidden Boy, or Summer Boys by Hailey Abbott, this book will probably be one of your favorites! So, will you read this book or is it not for you? Happy Reading!
I have to admit, I got a little annoyed with Maddy at times. She just couldn't appreciate...at least at first. But then again, it would suck to have planned out you're summer and then have it ruined in just seconds, having to leave you're "so called boyfriend" and friends behind. Her friends turned out to be very supportive of her. By that I mean, they weren't only friends with her because of who she was dating and the house she lived in. They liked her for her, even when her relationship ended, they stayed by her side.
I hate Brian. l hate him, I hate him, I hate him. I mean, at first I was thinking "Aweh, he's so sweet!" but no. He's such a douche. David's so much better, but so much more..chill. Not hippie or anything, just I don't know, more relaxed and stuff.
The back of the book doesn't give David much justice. I thought we was going to be this new guy she meets, who thinks he's better then everyone. He hated her friends and thought she was a spoiled princess. Yeah, he was annoyingly irresistible and his eyes were probably awesome, but no! David was simply a nice boy that she met, and he just so happened to be hot. And even if he called her a spoiled princess...you couldn't blame him. She was always such a negative and unappreciative brat who refused to enjoy herself. Yeah, I guess it was rude. It's never exactly fun to be talked about behind your back by someone who just met you. The wrong side of you too. But he felt bad and made her cookies which proved the point that he made a mistake and he acknowledged it. I mean, no ones ever made me cookies. He helped her with everything and tried to make her feel more at home. He did not hate her friends. He never even met them! He hated Brian because it was her boyfriend! He liked her, so he was probably just threatened or jealous. And plus, Brian's an asshole.
Anyway, after the whole cookie situation, they spent the whole day together, riding bikes to town, talking, shopping for the tasting room furniture. After that day, she was different. No, she was the same, but she wasn't bitching at everything. She was herself, the girl she was at home, in the city! I loved that. I loved her relationship with David, and I totally knew he liked her...just saying. I had that stomach feeling through out the whole book. It's the perfect girl book, and definitely a must read!(: It's hilarious(Omg, I laughed so hard at her cooking attempt. Eggplant surprise, with juice that looked like Kool Aid? Brilliant(:) It's a book you can connect with. You can picture the winery, tasting room, and the house party she threw at the beginning so well, it's honestly like you're there! The full affect(:

The Other Boy is such a great book. I love how Hailey Abbott knows how to get teenage girls attention with this book because I could not put it down. The book is about this girl named Maddy who through a party while her parents were away and was having fun hanging out with her boyfriend and friends. Her parents decided to come home early and came home to a party. Maddy's parents decided to punish her by going to Napa Vally where her parents just bought a vineyard and work their and fix it up over the summer. Maddy is not happy because she has to leave her friends and boyfriend behind and work. While there she meets a boy name David who works there and her parents tell her she will spend everyday with him and fix up the barn. Maddy is miserable because she is away from everybody she loves and David thinks she's a princess that gets whatever she wants. As she continues to work and be with David she starts to see that he has a sweet side to him and starts to fall in love with him. Maddy just has one problem she still as a boyfriend that she does't want break up with him. Maddy has found herself distancing herself away from her boyfriend and friends and getting closer to David. The summer is almost over and she doesn't want to leave, she is enjoying every day with David. Maddy finally breaks up with her boyfriend and before she leaves to go back home she gets together with David. This book was so amazing and I would recommend it to any teenage girl that loves summer romances.
DNF, but some how made it to chapter 10 (1/3 the way through) Yet another Abbott book I just can’t bring myself to finish. This was the last one in my personal library and I just can’t see any of my daughters wanting to read this.
Abbot’s female leads come of as rich, entitled and snobby. I can’t bring myself to give one hot damn about (fill in the blank) in this case Maddy. For some reason we have to know about every brand she is consuming down to her bottled water (Smart Water) cause I know you care too.
In this story our female lead gets punished to a summer working in her parents newly acquired vineyard in the Napa Valley. Her punishment is a result of throwing a major rager the very first night her parents entrust her to spend a summer alone at home (@ 17). When Ma & Pa forget some paper work Maddy is busted. Like come on! How stupid do you have to be to throw a kegger before you’ve confirmed your parents are definitely gone.
Anyway I guess the next part is we’re supposed to wonder what will happen next when she is forced to work one on one with a super hot guy all summer. Oh no Maddy has a hot, sexy boyfriend already at home. What to do, what to do. Well no spoilers here because I could get past the part where she ditches out on work the first day and then the guys bakes her cookies the next day to apologize for calling her a snob.
Okay this is just too ridiculous to continue. Just can’t with this.
Madeline Sinclaire’s parents allow her to stay home while they go to Napa Valley for the summer. Her parents end up coming back early and catch her throwing a party at the house. They are infuriated and sentence her to spend the rest of her summer with them at their vineyard. This means she’ll be away from her friends and away from her boyfriend, Brian. She’s reluctant to enjoy the two months there. The place is unlike what she’s accustomed to in San Francisco.
She gets commissioned by her father to fix up a wine tasting room with David, his business partner’s very gorgeous son. David is more enthusiastic about the job that Maddie is. At first they get off on the wrong foot (of course). They go around to other places for ideas on how to decorate and design the place. They spend a lot of time together working. She actually begins to enjoy being up at the vineyard. And she’s enjoying the time with David. Will summer turn out better than she thought?
I’ve read several Hailey Abbott books over the years. They have all been nice light reads. This one was very cute. Very cute. I liked all the characters and the way that Maddie grew along the way. I could go back and read this one again.
If you don't already know books like The Other Boy aren't my usual reads. But when I discovered this one Goodreads one day, I knew that this would be the perfect summer read. And boy was I right!
The Other Boy starts off with a bang and held my attention till the very last page. It was fun being able to escape in a book you wouldn't normally read. And I had a wonderful time being in the character's world and heads.
Other than being a light, fluffy sort of cliched book, The Other Boy was extremely enjoyable. I had no clue how much I would love it. It was really, really good.
Maddy is a little spoiled as it says in the summary. But thankfully she does change and it was so great to watch her change! She was a really great character after that. David was a total sweetie! And so, so funny! It was great to read the banter between the two, and watch all the fun situations they got each other in! Those were by favorite parts, hands down.
The Other Boy was a great change in books for me and I loved it! If you're looking for a great summer read, this is definitely the books for you!
I feel like I should be asking forgiveness for something. - David I know this isn’t exactly the summer you’d hoped for. It wasn’t my plan, either. But this summer is turning out fifty times better than I thought it would. Score one for changing plans. I’m sure I have a few brain cells left that haven’t been fried yet. - David I’m just . . . under a lot of pressure right now. - Maddy I’ve got something to tell you and I’m going to have to get it out before I lose my nerve. - Maddy I don’t know about you, but for me, this summer has been one of the craziest, most confusing . . . and best two months of my life. And you are the reason for that. - Maddy David, you’re my true love, why did we wait so long to get together? I don’t care what the world says. Let’s defy them all, my darling. - Maddy I’m crazy about you and last night was practically the best night of my life. All the rest of it is just details. - David Details can be really important! And if you don’t know that, then I think we have a problem! - Maddy
I honestly don't know where to start with this book. when I first started reading it I weren't too sure because of how Maddy was portrayed in the book. however as soon as I reached to the 9th/10th chapter I had fell in love with the characters and the strong bond & connection that they shared between one another.
this book had dragged me in and caught my attention by making me want to read more and more - page after page. I adored the different things it emphasised such as other emotions that also follow with "love". emotions like anger, hatred, sadness..
I must say this book is a really good one and I would recommend it to anyone debating whether they should read it or not.
This is definitely my favorite book from this author (I've read them ALL!) I thought it was fantastic and I love seeing character development throughout the book. Cute storyline and very lighthearted
2024 review- not as amazing as I always remembered. Still a cute story but Maddie is not a likable character at all and she’s a terrible daughter!! So spoiled even at the end of the book. And even David.. seemed immature!
El inicio del libro no me gusto Nada pero en cuanto apareció David Todo se arreglo. En general todo me gusto excepto pequeños detalles pero eso fue lo de menos.
This trope, of the spoiled rich girl finding herself a rugged man after getting in trouble, has been done many many times. However, Abbott does it better than many other authors. There was still quite a bit of cliches in here, and some blatant brand names that I guess were supposed to be impressive? The romance was a little flat but overall it was an ok read.
This book explores teenage insecurity and emotional manipulation through a familiar romantic setup, but the storytelling relies heavily on predictable conflicts and thin characterization. Although the premise has moments of relevance, the novel struggles to develop its ideas with enough depth to leave a lasting impression.
I like the book. It was a fun book, I know what was going to happen, but that didn't make it bad. It is what I refer to these types of books brain candy (they are fun and a quick read) nothing to serious.
