It’s “Yearbook” part 3! As Olive and the gang continue to help Maps with her yearbook project, they recall some of the crazier escapades from the past year! Including stories from writer James Tynion IV (BATMAN & ROBIN ETERNAL, CONSTANTINE: THE HELLBLAZER) and artists Christian Wildgoose (VERTIGO CMYK) and Ken Niimura (I Kill Giants)!
Brenden Fletcher is a writer who's worked on DC Comics titles including the bestselling Batgirl of Burnside, Gotham Academy, and Black Canary.
He contributed the acclaimed Flash story to the Eisner and Harvey Award winning Wednesday Comics and has recently launched a Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Pink series for Boom! Studios.
It'd be more of a 2,5 stars. It was an improvement from issue #15 but I'm still not a fan of those Yearbook issues, I'm incredibly bored ? The whole Yearbook concept was a good one but five issues for that """arc""" is way too many. There's literally nothing happening plot-wise ? We hardly see Olive anymore and she's supposed to be the main character... I love Maps, she's so dear to my heart, but every story she carries feels even more catered to pre-teens/teens than the usual issues do. Also, I wasn't a fan of the art in the second half of the issue "Boring Sundays".
The Yearbook concept continues as we're treated to a couple of stories that focus on Maps with a guest appearance by Robin!
The idea of guest writers and artist creating short stories about the Gotham Academy characters is actually a cool idea, but its really just turning this book into an anthology series at this point with little to no ongoing stories. This would have been a welcome break as a filler issue after a major arc, but several months in a row to close out this book will be too much. Its really too much after just three issues.
The stories and art in this issue are simply "cute." They're very fitting for a younger audience and have the feel of a cartoon series aimed at the 12-16 crowd. Again, nothing wrong with that at all, but I'm not really looking to read a half-hour cartoon show. Maps is, and always has been, an adorable character and probably one of the most popular by far, so that makes this issue quite a bit more tolerable. Her little forays are cute and readers like her...I like her.
Decent issue, but I really would rather have regular stories on a regular basis.
And it’s another yearbook issue. Sigh. The first mini story was actually decent and the art wasn’t bad either. The second story Boring sundays the art is weird and funky again. But the story also turns out to be decent enough. So unlike the previous issue, which was a don’t bother, this will be a borrow it and will get uped to a 3 star rating. I do hope these mini stories stop soon though.
