Outside of the lackluster romance, this is a very well written, very engaging book. There aren't many romances about the Reconstruction era, and even fewer where main characters are blatant about their Southern sympathies. The book is about Reeve Garrett, a Union soldier from a Confederate County, and Patrice Sinclair, the perfect Southern belle that has been in love with Reeve all her life.

Before the war, Patrice had just become engaged to Reeve's half brother Jonah since she couldn't have Reeve because he was illegitimate and their match wouldn't have been accepted by the community or her strict father. Jonah was everything Reeve wasn't, and Reeve was everything their father wanted Jonah to be, causing some slight rivalry, though the two brothers were very close. When Jonah is killed as a Confederate spy in the same camp that Reeve is in, he's blamed by all of the people in Pride County for killing his brother, including Patrice.

The story begins as Reeve returns to a broken Pride County after the end of the war. His father needs an heir, Patrice wants revenge, and the whole county is out for blood. When Deacon, Patrice's brother, returns home to become patriarch of the Sinclair home, any doubt that Patrice has in her stand against Reeve is dashed, and Deacon quickly becomes the epicenter of the entire story. Everything Patrice does is for love of Deacon and her family home (a la Scarlet w/ Tara), and her "love" for Reeve is put on the back burner. Reeve, however, is determined to marry Patrice, because if he has to step up into the life that was set for his brother, he wants it to be with Patrice at his side.

Like I said, I enjoyed the historical aspects of this story, but the author seemed to think that if she told us enough times that Reeve and Patrice were in love with each other, that it would make it true. Unfortunately, while I enjoyed all the aspects of the story of Pride County, I couldn't relate to either Patrice or Reeve when they talked about their feelings for each other. I still give it a B- for the rest of the story, and I will definitely be reading the other three books of the series.

Based on how this book began, I had high hopes it was going to be great however, my hopes were dashed. Instead of being great it was a fine line between okay and good, so I went ahead and gave it a 3-star rating instead of 2. I liked Reeve's strength and determination. I also liked that it was set in Kentucky (that's probably just because I am from KY myself, lol, so I do find it interesting to read stories set in the state). I also liked the post-war time period the story was set in.
