About the author

Elyne Mitchell is an Australian author best known for her Silver Brumby children's series, which tells the story of brumbies that roamed the Snowy Mountains in the Australian Alps, in particular a pale brumby named Thowra.

In 1988, she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for her services to literature, as well as an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Charts Sturt University in 1993.

A completely new set of horsey characters in a time after Thowra and his creamies. This time a flood leads to the adoption of a pure white foal that seems to be constantly searching for something. And then the strange sounds of a galloping herd start to be heard in the depths of the night. Who are they and why have they come? How is it all connected?

I think it's fair to say plotting is not Mitchell's strength.

The mysterious red-eyed foal and the secret of the night herd is creepy and uncharacteristically dark of Mitchell's Brumby books, but this is a refreshing change. The lack of dialogue is made up for the tension that the mysterious brumbies introduce, as well as the seeming 'bad luck' they bring.
