Mike, Belinda and Ann spend their holidays on a beautiful houseboat on the canal - and what an exciting time they have! They learn to swim and have some wonderful holiday treats - like taking a trip on a real canal boat.
Enid Mary Blyton (1897–1968) was an English author of children's books.
Born in South London, Blyton was the eldest of three children, and showed an early interest in music and reading. She was educated at St. Christopher's School, Beckenham, and - having decided not to pursue her music - at Ipswich High School, where she trained as a kindergarten teacher. She taught for five years before her 1924 marriage to editor Hugh Pollock, with whom she had two daughters. This marriage ended in divorce, and Blyton remarried in 1943, to surgeon Kenneth Fraser Darrell Waters. She died in 1968, one year after her second husband.
Blyton was a prolific author of children's books, who penned an estimated 800 books over about 40 years. Her stories were often either children's adventure and mystery stories, or fantasies involving magic. Notable series include: The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, The Five Find-Outers, Noddy, The Wishing Chair, Mallory Towers, and St. Clare's.
According to the Index Translationum, Blyton was the fifth most popular author in the world in 2007, coming after Lenin but ahead of Shakespeare.
Eh, I'm tired and I don't want to read things that make my brain hurt. If I could sleep in daylight, I would be doing that right now. This was simply Enid Blyton, but not much of a story or plot. I guess at the 96 pages or whatever then that is to be expected. I much prefer her longer books where something actually happens.
I've started reading these to my 4 year old daughter and am really loving re-reading them! The stories are beautifully simple - very little happens but the descriptions are gorgeous and the stories are gentle but interesting enough to hold the attention. I'm so excited to read all of the adventures!
This one's a quickie sequel to THE CARAVAN FAMILY, which I absolutely loved to bits, and you can tell it was written in a hurry as there's less in it and it seems shorter. However, while it doesn't have the unbridled joy of the first novel it's still great fun and acts as a nice little guide to life on a canal boat circa 1950. Blyton's descriptive passages are spot on, as always, and I was surprised by some of the stronger peril described in the book, such as an incident of near-drowning that I didn't see coming; this reminded me a little of those infamous public safety films made in Britain in the 1970s.
This is a very short book written to give children a glimpse into what it’s like living on a barge. Not quite the same standard as the Famous Five but goes well with a cup of coffee and a comfy chair in the sun on a Sunday afternoon.
I really loved the Saucy Jane family. I have read the book 'The Queen Elizabeth family' of the same series and I had loved it so I was quite eager to read this book. And I was not disappointed. In this book the caravan family spend their holidays in a canal boat and we spend it with them enjoying the world of houseboats through their eyes. Well this was a world before cellphones and children knowing everything through NGC and discovery channel so life is very simple. But it is the simplicity that I love in these books I loved the illustrations which were very quaint and nice. It's a small book so will get over as soon as you start it but it's good for a happy feeling read. For children, I am sure it will spike their adventure spirit.
*terharu* and pas gua beli sih bukan buku bekas lho karena dijualnya di Gunung Agung tapi yaa of course belinya udah jaman jadul, hihihi :p
Anywayy.. biar kata tipiss.. biar kata dikarang Enid Blyton, one of my most favourite author of all time (yang posisinya mulai tergeserkan ama L.M. Montgomery saking cintanya gua ama Anne Shirley :p), tapii ngga tau kenapaaa.. gua lamaa bangets baru berhasil menyelesaikan baca nih buku, huahahaha :D
Another year has passed and in the meantime Mike, Belinda and Ann have been boarders at school during the week, caravan children on the weekends. But in true Blyton style, none of them have physically aged. This time summer takes them to a house boat on the canal for the holidays. Again a simple but delightful read, I enjoyed their adventures as they learned to live on The Saucy Jane and made friends with the canal folk and learnt to swim. Of particular delight were the descriptions of canal boats going up and down the canal and their day-to-day life.
Not the best of Enid Blyton, and I can tell that after reading just one other book written by her. But a nice simple read for little kids that inspires them to do a little more, be a little more.
