Kyle Brightman-late of the advertising industry and soon-to-be-late of the 5th floor psych ward-has a job offer he can't refuse. A new resort in the Caribbean is looking for an art director. Kyle soon finds himself on the Isle of St. Agrippina working alongside a beautiful copywriter with an icy handshake. Questions arise: Why does the resort management team sport spray-on tans in the Bahamas? How can the resort offer such cheap vacation packages? What does one do with vats of Astroglide? To get the answers, Kyle must first navigate a series of wildly unpredictable events with a cast of even more wildly unpredictable characters, including a seductress jungle assassin, her partially paralyzed talking Chihuahua, an Ivy League Rastafarian seaplane captain, Kyle's ex-psych ward roommate, a former Haliburton mercenary, and a French tavern owner with a fondness for goats, all set to the greatest hits of the 70's. Pablo Cruise never felt so right.

Larry Weiner is the author of PARADISE ROT (BOOK ONE) and ONCE AGAIN, WITH BLOOD (BOOK TWO). Larry earned a degree in film from CSULA and was an award-winning art director. And then he got the hell out of Dodge (advertising) and decided he was better at fiction for the greater good (entertainment) than fiction to make people buy shit they don't need (advertising). He'd written two novels and a ton of scripts in his 20's but doesn't really count them as over 20 years passed since writing Paradise Rot. So really, let's call Paradise Rot the first novel. He lives on an island in the Pacific Northwest with his wife, two kids and a gaggle of animals.

Paradise Rot is a fast, entertaining read with a funny, well-developed plot and characters that I found myself thinking about for days. Weiner writes with a smart, fun, electric style in the vein of Dave Eggers or Chuck Palahniuk. Definitely kept me turning the pages and trying to predict the action (which I was unable to do). Looking forward to more from this author!

Welcome to tropical paradise. Welcome to The Isle of St. Agrippina. White sandy beaches. Delicious blended drinks. And island cuisine.

But beware. All is not as it seems. And you just might wind up on the menu.

You see, this long abandoned and now reopened and freshly renovated resort is run by zombies. Not the good ones, if there is such a thing, but the hungry ones. And their brains are working just fine. You’ll see.

Kyle, an advertising exec, should have known it was too good to be true. In fact, he did. Who would hire someone straight from the loony bin? But that didn’t stop him from using the plane ticket and jetting to a tropical paradise.

Right from the get go, things are weird. And they keep getting weirder.

What’s with the slow moving people with their perfect over-white teeth, spray on tans, and practiced pronunciation.

Who is the lady in the woods who likes to conk you over the head and drag you to a bar in the jungle tended buy some weird guy.

And did he really see a chihuahua with it’s butt on wheels, and did it actually speak?

I would have given this book 5 Stars just for the ingenuity. But I also laughed out loud, loved the eccentric mish mash of characters, and couldn’t get enough.

Looking for some fun with zombies. Give this one a try. And the next book, Once More, With Blood, is available now so you won’t have to wait for more fun.

I received this book for my honest review.

I have never read a zobmie book other than the spoof "Pride Prejudice and Zombies" so was apprehensive as to try "Paradise Rot" by debut author, Larry Weiner. But for the giveaway price of 99cents, meh! Why not? The first page has a Wikipedia description, "A separate ethical distinction can be made between killing a human for food (homicidal cannibalism) and eating the flesh of a person who was already dead (nacre-cannibalism)"... which made my brows furrow, and then right below it, "As God is my witness, I'll never be hungry again." Scarlett O'Hara. LOLOLOLOL-- I was in!
"Paradise Rot" opens with ad man, Kyle Brightman, hog tied in a Seattle psyche ward after he has cracked in a grocery store. When he asks the strapping orderly what will happen to him if he doesn't recover, he is told, " 'You will,' Hap said. 'I been doing this a long time and I can tell the ones who are gonna make it and the ones who fall through the cracks. You're the first one.' 'What do you tell the ones who are gonna fall through the cracks?' Kyle said. 'Same bullsh*t I told you,' Hap said." Funny banter!
While undergoing treatment, he gets a job offer as an art director on a soon-to-open luxury resort in the Caribbean, catering to middle income families. (Curiouser and curiouser.) As soon as he is able to get released, Kyle finds himself on board a private plane off to a beautiful island and working with a gorgeous and very pale copywriter...with cold hands. But almost from the first, things are odd-- but as the new guy with a swank opportunity, who is he to ask driving questions? At the resort and in the jungle, he meets a series of unconventional (quirky) characters, full of witty (burlesque) innuendo adding to the chilling (macabre) suspense. All my prejudices against zombie books have been blown out of the water as author Larry Weiner has crafted a clever, perfectly paced, and down-right hysterical tale. Surprisingly, I can't wait to read Book 2

Fun, satire and fast paced action zombie horror

Kyle works in advertising has a break down ends up in a mental health ward watching law and order then gets a "dream" job working in the carribean.

This was a real fun zombie read felt a little sorry for Kyle constantly passing out but it was so funny.

There are two types of zombies in this the animal flesh eating dumb zombies and the human flesh eating smart zombies who look and act like humans but smarter as one of them has the brilliant idea of turning an ex secret army bomb location into a cheap 5 stars Caribbean holiday but actually an all you can eat zombie buffet.

So it's up to kyle and his rag tag gang to save the holiday makers and the world from the zombies. To be honest kyle is the glue of the group rather than the brains. Woman (character's name) and her side kick Dog (did you know if a dog gets bitten and survives the side effect is talking?) and Cate are great characters and really add to the first half of the book till all the others join up.

I may not be a fan of traditional apocalyptic zombie stories, but I have become more and more a fan of comedic zombie stories. I love ones that have a whole different take on zombies and ones that have different rules for them. This is definitely one of those stories.

What if some zombies were intelligent and they operated the same as corporate America? What if they had a new brilliant idea on a new way to feed, and only a few could stop them? If these questions intrigue you, then this is the type of book for you.

It's part of a trilogy, and I'm very tempted to see what happens in the second one.

Review of Paradise Rot by Larry Weiner
Paradise Rot is a mixture of thriller, comedy and horror standalone novel that tells the story of Kyle, a guy that lost everything and, without realizing it, got himself into much more trouble than her could handle. Kyle got divorced, lost his money, cat, job and he was even diagnosed with bipolarity. When he had a breakdown at a supermarket, he got restrained and locked into a psychiatric ward. It made me feel sorry for him because anyone would have done what he did if we have been through the same as him. Nevertheless, that visit to the house of madness was the start of the end because there, he got the idea to apply for a job as a marketing guy in a luxurious Caribbean resort. Who would have thought that the wonderful place he saw when he arrived was nothing more than an all-you-can-eat-buffet for zombies?
Personally, I found the author’s perspective of the zombies pretty refreshing and quite funny. We are used to this horrible decomposing things that aren’t even capable of properly walking and talking while the author present us with “humans” with ice cold bodies, excellent teeth work and, in some cases, a pretty good tan. These creatures are intelligent enough to have created a gorgeous resort to attract not only customers—lower to middle class, mostly—that might serve as food but also job applicants that might become their brothers and sisters when the time arrived. What, I really found hilarious was the coexistence of these zombies and some type of hunter in the very same island and the fact that the zombies had these complex personalities that resemble the human ones. For example, Kyle’s marketing partner is beautiful, has a great figure, intelligent, sassy and a zombie. Kyle’s reaction when he found out was totally hilarious. Seriously, you guys don’t want to miss it.
I have to admit that this novel was a parody in some sense. I found myself laughing or chucking at some stupidity that Kyle or his new “friends” did. A lot of them kept a sense of humor even though they could turn into food any minute. I really respect that and I have to admit that from all the character in the novel, my favorite was Kyle. He is a total jerk that, at the begging, seems like a asshole that would never learn his lesson. He was supposed to be nicer to people, stop drinking and be more sociable in his new job but he flirts with his partner, breaks a couple of ground rules, drinks, etc. However, I think that he evolved, little by little, in the novel. His personality might not have changed 100% but I think he learned how to properly work together with others and to accept them the way they are, and believe me when I tell you there was A LOT to accept.
I highly recommend this novel to any horror-parody zombie fans. I believe you will enjoy the attempts of Kyle and his friends to stay alive in an exotic Caribbean island while trying not to get included in the menu.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. I reviewed this book in conjunction with a blog tour with Bewitching Book Tours.
Are zombie books supposed to be funny? Like laugh out loud kind of funny? The basic answer to that is no; while a lot of them might have interesting characters and zingy one liners between them, the actual story itself isn’t funny. Larry Weiner has done something incredibly unique with Paradise Rot because the story itself is funny. It’s a story about zombies (or the undead) and maybe some vampires… throw in a crazy gun runner and a pilot whose cover is a Rastafarian… Woman, who lives in the jungle with Dog (and no, not the Bounty Hunter… but he talks!)… and a slew of other characters.

The beautiful island resort of St. Aggies is run by the undead. It was once frequented by celebrities and other VIPs, but mysteriously closed its doors suddenly. Now the undead who inhabit the underground facilities on St. Aggies need to be fed or they will deteriorate. The plan is to open the resort again and bring in fresh meat… I mean tourists, who may or may not become the main course during dinner. There are a lot of power plays going on among the undead; the Clan wants what is best for the greatest majority of them, Jackson loves things to go his way, Atria is his faithful sidekick, Dory wants to take over the world (ok, maybe not the world but at least the resort), Cate isn’t quite an undead (??), and Kyle the Mad Men throwback ad man who spent some time in the crazy bin. The cast of characters are mostly good (or as good as they can be), even if most of them might very well be off their rockers completely.

The story develops quickly and keeps up a fast pace throughout. The characters are well developed and strong. There are so many laugh out loud moments I quit trying to keep track. The author’s sense of humor is refreshing and comes through so clearly throughout the story. There are some cultural and historical references thrown in here and there to explain the situation our characters find themselves in.

You know the old saying about something seeming too good to be true? That’s exactly the situation many of our characters find themselves in. An opportunity that was definitely too good to be true presented itself; and far too easily; and they jumped on it. Will the plan to bring in fresh meat work? Will those who are trying to stop the undead from herding tourist like cattle succeed?

This is the first book in a trilogy, but it does a great job of wrapping things up quite nicely; I’m curious to see what book two holds.

An excellent afternoon read! If you love books that you don’t have to take too seriously and love zombies.. and gun runners… talking dogs.. maybe vampires… and just basic weirdness, then this is the book for you! Book Two is out now and I’m ready to start!

Disclaimer: Larry Weiner is published by Booktrope, the same publisher which released my debut novella, No Rest for the Wicked.

This book was of particular interest to me because Weiner has worked in the same industry as me – I believe he used to be an Art Director, like protagonist Kyle Brightman. Without giving too much away about the plot, I think I can safely tell you that Brightman is hired to bring tourists to a Caribbean island, but one with a twist. It’s ruled by zombies, a bit like an advertising agency.

Weiner describes the work as a parody, and whilst it does have some elements of parody, it also contains a lot of originality and a lot of innovation. It’s also the first book in a trilogy, and so I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next. And, as if this book wasn’t cool enough already, Mr. Weiner also designed the cover. I know you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but this cover is so awesome that it was one of the main reasons why I bought it.

Paradise Rot didn’t let me down – it’s a great read by a great author, and I can’t wait to read more of Weiner’s work.

Kyle needs a new start in life. After years in advertising which led to a stay in the psych ward, he's looking for paradise. He ends up on a Caribbean island called St Agrippina where a new resort is beginning business. His job is to bring the people to vacation on the island. He has a beautiful colleague that he's falling for. What could go wrong? Well, the island resort is run by zombies. Yes, I said zombies. They need a food source and what better way than to bring them to St Agrippina.

The non-zombies on the island, along with Kyle, decide that the zombies must die. They work out a plan to rid St Agrippina of the zombies - except for a few friendly zombies.

Zombies!? Why didn't I see this in the book description before I read this book?! This is definitely not my genre but it wasn't that bad of a story. There's also a lot of vulgarity in the book. Otherwise, it's a good book.

Paradise Rot was a surprisingly fast read. I enjoyed the book throughout. The author took awhile to get into the zombie action, but once he did the story took off. I have read several zombie titles and this one was a lot different. It is full of funny and exciting action sequences.

Kyle is an advertising designer when he's not in rehab. He gets an advertising gig at a Caribbean island resort run by centuries old zombie Jackson. When Kyle meets and falls for beautiful Cate the fun really begins.

You have crazy jungle women, talking dogs, Ivy league Rastafarians and a drugged out ex military pirate.

My only criticisms are that both the characters and action sequences could have been fleshed out a bit more, pun intended.

The battle sequences were a little hard to follow but exciting all the same.

Over all a great read.

Paradise Rot was a fun read! The story is set on a Caribbean island, and on more than one occasion, I wondered if this story idea came to Larry Weiner as he sat relaxing on a beach with a fruity drink topped with an umbrella.

I love that we meet Kyle, the main character, in a mental institution. The entire story is filled with unconventional characters, which prove to be very entertaining.

I like the way Larry Weiner scatters the story with just the right amount of humorous moments without interrupting the suspense.

This was an interesting plot with witty dialogue, and an overall entertaining story.

Definitely not your standard zombie survival story! The author, Larry Weiner, had unique in mind when writing this book. The main character, Kyle, begins his journey in a mental institution, and takes you throughout the adventure of a dream job, dream girl, and paradise, only to find a sci-fi movie come to life. The writing was inventive, adventurous, fun, and definitely had science fiction feel to it(a talking dog....). Personally I like a little more suspense in my zombie fiction, but found that I enjoyed it immensely, and look forward to future books!

If I could I would give this a 10 star review. This book is everything. Seriously. I never knew zombies could be so cool. I'm a relative newbie to horror so I may be wrong, but I've never heard of another book that gives zombies the same treatment that vampires normally get. A whole population that thrives due to good management, a plan for the future. It's a great take on them. I really enjoyed it.

Also the main cast of characters, the Mild Bunch were awesome. Also,I love Dog. And Desmond. #TeamDesmond

Paradise Rot is a fun read with many twists within characters and plot. Furthermore, Weiner's blunt humor gives small hints to bigger picture motifs. The two curious quotes the author chose to open with alone are a good representation of the irony, satire and playfulness that the book immerses you in. Although it might seem like an "entertainment" read on the surface, there is great use of symbolism through plot and description. I know I'm eager to see what book 2 will feature!

Take a bit of Jimmy Buffett, mix with some undead, stir with bad 70's songs and you have Paradise Rot. It was totally and completely hilarious though I should deduct a half a star because the author doesn't know the difference between an oil derrick and a pump jack. Loved the book so when is the next one?

Paradise Rot by Larry Weiner is probably one of the most unique books that I have ever read. This book has action, suspense, wit, great characters, a lot of humor and yes...zombies! Larry's writing is very clever and hilarious (several times I literally laughed at loud). I am so glad I read this book and already have the second book in the trilogy, Once Again, with Blood, ready to go!
