I really wasn't sure what to expect when I downloaded this book. It was on the Amazon freebie list and sounded out of the box so I gave it a try. It had so much appeal for me. I found each new character drew me further in and left me excited to see what was on the next page. Enid Runa works as a secretary at a a mental health clinic. Their motto," was that it had to remain open 7 days a week because insanity didn't take a break." I found Enid's inner thoughts and how she carried herself so relate-able. I think many people could easily slide into her shoes and see things as she does. She is a curvy girl but accepts herself as she is. I loved that about her. While she is a simple woman living alone in a not so safe neighborhood she finds herself one evening after work seeing things in her house. I don't want to give too much away but will say if you've ever seen the movie, " The Frighteners," you will get a good idea of the vibe that goes on in this book.

Ian Osman is a paranormal detective with a little something extra. I just loved this guy. I can totally get sucked in by a sense of humor and charm. He had both with another layer of confidence. His assistant Cronus still has not shown all that he is I believe. He has no reaction or emotion throughout the whole book and only says a few words. What he does say is direct and to the point with fast reflexes and a knack for being in the right place at the right time. There are several books in the series I'm seeing 6 right off the bat but is definitely one I will want to continue with. I just wish it had a cheaper box set. Most the books seem to be less than 100 pages per read. It is sad because to buy all will be $15 for 500 pages? I've paid 99 for a 300 page book. A well written one at that. There are several well known authors that sell a 300 page book for 6.99 even. I may not find myself reading all as it seems more about money than putting out a good series. This one however was quite a pleasure to find. The story ends with an alliance made between Enid and Osman and a promise of future creatures to come. I loved all the ones in this one. Enjoy!

The guy on the cover looks like he was taken out of a watch ad.
"Good evening, Enid," he greeted me.
"Good evening, Mr. Bellamy," I returned.(Kindle Locations 31-32).

Unnecessary dialogue tags.
Wait… she’s gonna eat eighteen eggs in one night. Who is she? Gaston?
Wait… she called the cops for a ghost in her house? They take her to the station… why? They didn’t find anything. And she meets a paranormal detective, Ian Osman.

"Mind slowing down? I'd like to live to see another day," I called to him. (Kindle Locations 207-208).

Aaaah lose the dialogue tags. I mused, I guessed, I quipped, I returned, I wondered, I lied, I replied, I commented, I retorted. NOOOOO.
Omg I don’t think one single ‘said’ has been used yet.
I did a search… THREE. They only use ‘said’ three times in 70 pages.

And don’t put his actions in her speech paragraphs. Editors. Worth the money.
" A memory hit my brain like a punch to the chin.(Kindle Location 242).

What?
"Move back down the hall," he ordered me. "And get ready."
"For what?" I whispered.
"We'll see," he replied. (Kindle Locations 265-267).

Nope the dialogue tags are making my teeth hurt.
and a BBW romance but she isn't on the cover... sighs.

The plotting was good, and the characters were fun and interesting, but the phantom whisperer and his minions plus the soul sucking hags just didn't do it for me. Good for someone else, just not me. See publisher's blurb for other clues.

I have read a ton of Mac Flynn this weekend, and I have to say this series may become my favorite. A plus size woman with mystic powers she didn't know about. She only knew she could tell a person's name or if they were distressed at the psychiatric clinic where she works. Her co-workers think she is strange, and she has scared quite a few patients. She never asked for it, and she certainly didn't ask for a phantom to follow her home and ruin her life. She is saved by a guy who fights paranormal baddies, and oops, he is a werewolf.

Way too many mistakes. Some typos and some much more serious, like English wasn't really he author's native language (or she just didn't pay attention in class).
The story was entertaining but the pace was too fast and felt more like a TV episode description than a written story. It's good it was free on amazon, because I would curse my stupidity if I paid any money for it. And when I saw the price of the second book... are you kidding me? When the author doesn't even proofread (or let someone else do it, considering she's clearly not qualified) before putting it for sale? Nope, just nope.

The only thing good about this novella was its brevity. The author has followed the irritating trend of breaking their book into several sections and selling them as a "book" when really it's only part of the whole thing. I could care less for the characters and nothing in the story was compelling enough for me to bother with any more of this author's stories.

I was expecting a slightly better plot with several compact twists in the story line. Though I won't say that I am disappointed, but it tightness of the content was lacking while developing the story. Rather, I should say, the portrayal of the scenes could have been more captivating. Liked the book overall. Recommendable as an one time read. Thank you.

What I Am Rrading

I have read at least one other title by Mac Flynn. I believe that one was Unnatural Lover. By comparison, Oracle of Spirits #1 is heavier on the paranormal, but much lighter on the romance.

First in a series.

I enjoyed this story. I liked Edna. She is strong and sarcastic. She holds her own against Osman in a war of comebacks and wits. Osman is irritating with his remarks, at times. They face and fight phantoms together.

I received this ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Enid Runa is having a very strange evening. She stops for groceries and feels a chill as she passes by a dark alley. She gets home and her eggs explode, her TV goes crazy, and to top it off she is attacked by a strange creature that gives her the same chill she felt by the alley. At the police station she is approache by a man that calls himself Ian Osman, Paranormal Detective, and he claims to be able to rid her house of the spirit that attacked her. Ian will get rid of the dark spirit in her home, but Enid's life is turned up-side-down when more of the spirits show up to attack her. Wow, fantastic. I loved the interactions between Enid and Ian, I couldn't help but chuckle a few times. Wonderfully suspenseful, surprising twists in the plot.

62 pages, ends on a cliffhanger. Very good story. No smut or instant crazy sexual attraction.
Enid Runa lives in a run down part of town & works at a mental health hospital. She has a gift of 'knowing things' like: unknown people's names, if someone's temper is going to explode, etc.
One night, after work, Enid experiences a hair raising paranormal encounter that puts her in the path of mysterious paranormal detective Osman.
While Enid's considering admitting herself, she is quickly thrust into the world of the supernatural.
Hunted by a powerful foe, Enid decides to fight back alongside Osman & his pale, frowny face assistant,'Cronus.'
Secrets are discovered & Enid begins to learn about who and what she is.
Definitely will be reading the next books.

I didn't realize how short this story was, but kind of glad about that. It started off interesting enough, but by the end the characters and writing style just annoyed me.
