In the fifth edition of 'Real Stories from a Small-Town ER,' a registration clerk in Ohio recalls crazy, sad, funny, and just plain weird stories from encounters with real patients visiting the emergency room. From a long night under a full moon to a patient being unexpectedly arrested when he encountered a surprise visitor at the nurses' station, these stories will take readers on a wild ride. So jump on in to read about tips from the internet gone wrong, check out some of the reasons patients get mad at us, feel the fear about the creature that roamed loose on the night shift, and try to figure out some of the statements made by intoxicated/high patients.
Another good collection of stories 👌 One in particular really tugged at my heartstrings and made me angry on this person's behalf. Really hope things turned out well for this particular lady :(.
Step into the malay with Kerry and her coworkers, enjoy the circus 🎪. These stories will amuse you, make you sad/angry, and leave you at a loss for words.
I love Kerry's sassy style of writing and enjoy the books immensely. Although scientists will tell you there is no correlation between full moon as weird happenings, I am yet to find a professional that doesn't say this doesn't happen. As someone who suffers with the chronic disease fibromyalgia, I occasionally have too visit a@e myself.Although these books show I'm far from a frequent flyer ( learnt this term through these books) as even though my condition is extremely painful I have only attended once in the last four years, but have always found everyone involved in my care to be truly amazing , and have the most true respect for them, these books have often kept me entertained when in pain. So a big thank you to Kerry for that, have more than once got me through a painful night. As I have said.in a previous review keep them coming Kerry!!😀
I really enjoy these books, especially when I'm too busy to invest time in an entire novel. The stories are entertaining and run the gamut from funny to poignant to anger-provoking. Personally, I wouldn't work in an ER for triple what these people make, so it's a good thing SOMEONE can put up with all the crazies and jackasses out there!
Kerry imparts wisdom and humor once again with her stories of patients and lunatics trying to check into her ER. Fun read, great insight into what goes on behind the doors of triage, and what medical people really think! I recommend for anyone who loves crazy patients and medical personnel reactions to such!
How funny true stories from a small town ER. Some people are just plain stupid and others, thanks to stupid things they do or think or say makes them appear even more idiotic. But it makes for hysterical reading! I loved it! Love the whole series!
I love these books!! I forget how many of them that I’ve read, but love everyone of them. Although I don’t work in the ER, I’m a RN and so relate to her stories. Keep up the great work! Now on to reading another of her books.
I love reading Kerry's books and having worked in the medical field for 40 years I have some strange stories of my own! This book was very well written and I can't wait to read her next book!
All of this author’s books about the events that take place at the er where she works are pretty interesting. I recommend them to anyone who likes to read about what goes on in a normal er-especially the not so normal patients sometimes.
More fun stuff from a very funny writer/editor/observer extraordinaire! Please don’t edit out your wonderful sense of humor and slightly lopsided way of looking at things. The world and especially healthcare need that right now!
These books were SUPPOSED to help me sleep....Not so much! They're too interesting to put down. I had no idea, nor appreciation for what the "Registration Lady" did, but now, my whole perspective has changed. In fact, although I've been sick a bit, cancers, etc, I've always been cordial to Admissions. As a retired cop, I've seen the ugliness of many people and I believe my self-professed "Long Fuse" would be snipped to the size of a matchstick. So before you come hell "FIRE IN THE HOLE!" I'd have smacked that teenage Bible Bully upside the head, thus ending a two, three-day maximum career. Last Sunday, I was Squaded (yes, I made that word up) to a small Ohio Hospital with chest pain and difficulty Breathing. Unlike our Bible Bullies, I really am a Christian and this happened just as I pulled up too late for church after detours took Mr, I think through Wyoming. The Medic nailed my IV entourage route first try. WOW! That NEVER HAPPENS. I cheered too soon. The needed a second one for a specific test. 25+ misses. and blown veins later (had to be a 20 gauge, one FINALLY made it in! I have a high pain tolerance, so while three were working at once, I grew USED TO IT! In report, I was described as 52yo Female, great makeup, very funny. I was very flattered. My point is, sorry, this isn't about me, I got to HEAR a LOT of screaming and yelling while I was being turned into a sieve. (Post note, that 2nd IV was...wait for it...NEVER USED! BWAHAHAHAHAHA! Poor Kerry, she's underpaid if she's making six figures! No one should take that kind of abuse. At least as a cop, my "customers" we're always wrong and I COULD lose my temper! She has to play nice all the time. Pass the Demerol! I've never seen anything borderline racist or hear her put someone down, but PEOPLE, YOU TRY AND DO HER JOB! You wouldn't last 5 minutes! KERRY, I hope these books are great therapy for you and make you piles of cash! Pray for the too big ascending aortic aneurysm they found, and I just have to wonder " Which hospital do you work in?"
I started reading and could not put it down, before I was done, and that says a lot. The protective dogs, cats and ferrets of patients in need of medical rescue, was hilarious. The drugged hallucinations of seeing a minotaur and a pirate at one's bed, was quite hilarious too.
I need to read such funny stories.
Some reviewers said the language was bad, and I had begun reading with much trepidation, but the foul language was wisely masked. I didn't read any profanities. This being the account of a small town, it was missing the dangerously crazy aka the psychopaths (think Hannibal Lecter).
I enjoyed the crazies in this book, especially the Bible bullies. They reminded me of the beardos here (in Pakistan) they would be the same level of crazy, had it not been for free flowing weaponry courtesy of the United States and its fetish for defeating the Soviet Union during the 70's and 80's. Fast forward 30 years, the US is still arming and training these illiterates of the wild wild east.
Another great book; as a 24 year "ambulance driver" I can definitely relate to many of the stories in the book. And as I stated for a previous book, it's interesting to see things from the admin perspective. Also, after reading the authors note at the end, I must add that she should feel no need to change - sure, try to fix any grammatical/spelling errors if possible, but they don't detract. I was taken aback by the comment about racist - your response was perfect - other than gender and general age range, I applaud the author for her neutral descriptions of the people. Keep the books coming.
I'm rating this book a five star because it is FUNNY, SAD, remarkably TRUE to life and because I admire anyone who work this kind of job and still get it together to scribe ANYTHING. I think the author is too hard on herself and should ignore a lot of the ragging she gets. If I wanted to read refined literature I would drag out my copy of one of Signet's Classic books of American Short Stories and pile into Melville, Faulkner or Stowe. I do that from time to time, but when I just want to relax and enjoy simple stories pulled from today's medical complexity I go for Hamm's books. Great stuff!
I just couldn't put this book down, as with all the rest of her books. I hope you continue to write these stories as it really gives you an realistic idea of what happens in the ER. How you all put up with some of those people and manage to keep a smile on your face, is beyond me.
I enjoyed this book, much like I have enjoyed Kerry's other books My only suggestion is that she write out the meaning of the initial s referring to a treatment or problem at least once per book. Or, add a glossary to the end so readers can look them up. Thank you.
I am a retired Fire Captain from a medium sized city in California. I think I have read all your books. Besides ringing absolutely true, you write with a friendly style that makes people like you. Thank you.
I am enjoying these books as I find people are just as crazy, selfish, and brain dead as I thought. The problem I am having is partial sentences. There needs to be some serious editing.
I have read all of her books and totally enjoyed them. The stories are full of the happens that take place in as small ER and the patient s who make some crazy demands. I look forward to future books of KERRY HAMM.
As always, more dark humor, tragedy and the sad truth (with names, dates, faces and some circumstances changed to protect both the innocent as well as the guilty). Enjoy.
I've read most of Kerry's books And have thoroughly enjoyed them all. Sure they seem stranger than fiction, but ya know what they say, People are strange! Just how much!!!
