The Lost Clan #4

The Last Warrior

Rate this book
Many centuries ago, a village killed the children of the Thunder god. For their crime, the Creator banished them to live a half existence in the land of mists, neither dead nor alive. But once in a generation, a brave is given the opportunity to save his clan.

In 1892, that warrior is Black Lion.

There was only one way for Black Lion to melt the Thunder god's anger: Listen for a sacred white man's song—and sing it perfectly with the one who introduced him to it. He joins Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and travels to London, where he encounters the daughter of two opera singers—the most beautiful woman he's ever seen. However, Suzette Joselyn is already engaged to another man.

But the two are destined to meet again when Suzette shows up in America, pregnant and abandoned by her fiancé. Reunited with Black Lion, she finds it impossible to turn down his offer of marriage to save her child from life as a bastard. But she doesn't realize that her brave new husband is consumed with a mission that may force him to choose between his people and the woman he loves.

Two Bears was a part of Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show but, he was sick. The show was about to go to Europe and he needed his closest friend, Black Lion to go in his place. After some persuasion, Black Lion agreed. Two Bears had already been paid for his part of the show and spent the money.
Black Lion went to seek his vision and was shown a woman singing. He was told to find the woman and she would be singing a certain song and she would be his destiny. Black Lion then went with the Wild West Show to Europe for a year.
In London, Suzette, her fiancee, William and her grandmother, Irena were attending one of the performances. Irena did not approve of William and told Suzette that he was too close to his mother and things would not work out if his mother didn't approve of her. Suzette wasn't worried. Suzette left William to find Irena and Black Lion was late for the performance. He was in a hurry and didn't see Suzette and ran into her and she fell in a mud puddle. Suzette found Irena and went home to quickly change. When she came back, she found out that Irena was going to perform for Buffalo Bill at a party that night. Suzette felt that she needed to go with Irena to make sure was alright. Irena told Suzette that she was traveling back to America with the Wild West Show in order for her to find an Indian that she felt she was in love with. She was convinced that one of the performers looked much like her Indian love and he could help her find him. She would not be able to attend Suzette's wedding.
Irena left and soon after William's mother found out. William's mother soon forced William to break off the engagement because of Irena. Suzette had already slept with William and was pregnant. William soon turned his attention to one of Suzette's understudy's so Suzette left him. She came to America, pregnant, to see about staying with Irena. Irena did not yet know about the pregnancy and took her to her tent to wait for her until after that nights performance. Black Lion came looking for Irena and found Suzette crying. He couldn't help himself, he went to her to comfort her. He was joking with her and told her that since they were alone together a second time, she would have to marry him. She agreed to marry him that night. They kissed and discovered a strong attraction to each other.
They were married by a priest whom Suzette held a gun on. They also wed Indian style under a pine tree. They separated and didn't see each other for a week or so. When Irena came to the tent Suzette told her that she had married Black Lion. Irena was surprised that he agreed to the marriage in name only. Suzette became a part of the Wild West Show occasionally. One of those times, Black Lion traded places with one of the other Indians so that he could see Suzette again. They spent the night together and kissing and talking. Black Lion told Suzette of his mission to save his people who were living in a world of mist. Their reality depended on him finding someone who would help him free his Lakota people out of the mist and into the real world. He also told Suzette that in the way of his tribe, he could not take her as a real wife until after she had her child. Suzette got upset and didn't understand. She thought he was rejecting her. She questioned the fact that he had told her in Europe that all the Indian's in the show were married. They hadn't talked much and he hadn't told her yet of his being in the show due to his best friend, who was married, being sick. She ran away from Black Lion upset. Two Bears and his wife were waiting for him in his tent when he got back home. He told Two Bears to tell the other Indians in the show that he was back but because he was still sick, Black Lion would continue to take his place in the show. He asked Rabbit Leggings to tell any white person who came along that she was his wife and for Two Bears to hide in order continue the charade.
Suzette came by in the morning to apologize and ran into Rabbit Leggings who told her that she was Black Lion's wife. Black Lion showed up and Suzette ran off again. Black Lion put himself in the show with Suzette that evening so that he could talk to her but he took off with her during the show and Buffalo Bill came to find them so they couldn't finish their argument. They agreed to talk after the party was over that followed the show that night. Black Lion's grandfather came to see Black Lion and when they talked, he told Black Lion that it would be OK for him to have relations with his wife, Suzette. He told him not to tell her the words of the song that he was waiting for her to sing. Black Lion had already realized that Suzette had the voice that he heard in his vision. He told his Grandfather about the party after the show and his grandfather told Black Lion that he wanted to attend the party. They dressed up and went to the party. Irena saw the grandfather at the party and went to talk with him. Black Lion came to try and talk to Suzette but she was asked to sing in place of Irena by Buffalo Bill because he couldn't find Irena. She agreed to sing and Black Lion told her that he would try and find Irena. After she had sung a few songs, she asked the musicians to excuse her and she went to find Black Lion. They walked back to Irena's tent and as they were walking they talked. Black Lion told her that Irena had left with the grandfather. They left that night to follow Black Lion's grandfather and Suzette's grandmother. Suzette was still upset at Black Lion and thinking that Rabbit Leggings might be his wife. He tried to explain about Two Bears and Rabbit Leggings but it was all a story quickly told. He told Suzette that he would not quit trying to persuade her that he was telling the truth. After a few days of traveling, he felt that she might be starting to believe his story. Suzette began to get upset because Black Lion was doing nothing to show that he was pursuing a closer relationship with her. She decided to tell him how she felt and Black Lion told her that he had not pushed her because he knew she was exhausted from the traveling. He told her he was in love with her and she didn't tell him that she was in love with him but he knew she was by the way she acted towards him. They did talk about Rabbit Leggings and why he was in the show and she decided to believe him.
She had a dream one night about Thunderer and Black Lions mission. She told him that she thought that Thunderer was afraid of her. Thunder appeared one night and Suzette thought that she saw Black Lion talking to his grandfather. He told her that he was talking to his spirit and they needed to return to the show. He took Suzette to the nearest town and asked her to purchase a horse so they could travel back faster. It took three days to get back. When they arrived, lightening was striking the show and causing the buildings and tents to catch fire. Black Lion rode in and rescued Two Bears and sent him back to get Suzette, whom he had left to come back on foot so he could get to the show faster in order to help them. Two Bears got Suzette and when they arrived, she saw Black Lion fighting the storm. He was injured and she started to sing a song. It was the song that Black Lion had heard in his dreams and it calmed Thunderer. Irena was there with the show and she started to sing along with Suzette and so did Black Lion. Thunderer's children appeared and so did Black Lion's family along with his tribe. They had come out of the mist that they were trapped in. The curse had been lifted.
Irena and White Claw had been married and Irena agreed to finish out her contract with the Wild West Show. Suzette had a son.

The Last Warrior (The Lost Clan Book 4)

This was an excellent book by Karen Kay. It keeps you interested from the beginning of the book to the end. This was the last warrior to find a way to free his people from the mist, where the Creator had put them, as punishment, instead of death, for the crimes, they had committed. You will have to read the book, to experience the adventures and trials that he, the last warrior, must encounter. He does find love and a partner to share all with him.

I finished the entire Lost Clan series. As always Karen Kay teaches us the truth about Native American Indian culture and beliefs. I so appreciate that. I enjoyed seeing the story of the Lost Clan's redemption played out over the four books. Black Lion and Suzette were interesting characters. All the storylines in this series were powerful and interesting. I love Karen's books.

Very intriguing, Karen Kay takes us on a journey to free Black Lion's clan, but first he must find what his true quest shall be. Once he hears the captivating voice of Suzette, he knows he must stay by her side and help her. Is she part of the quest to free his clan? Witty, compelling, & intriguing, truly a Native American treasure.
