Very surface level. Little context for any specific work– I would have liked to learn more about the symbology of the paintings, their historical significance, the ways they tie in with the culture in which they were created, even about how they were produced. What sorts of pigments, for example. Instead, most of the book is just descriptions of how things look. Disappointing.

This book shows some amazing examples of the Celtic and Anglo-Saxon book illuminations with explanations. Anyone interested in manuscript illumination would enjoy this book.

Of all the different cultures that practised the art of illumination, so far my favorite is that of the Celts and the Saxons. This book has wonderfully reproduced plates, each one accompanied by insightful commentary from Nordenfalk.
