A Cake sequel

An impromptu road trip makes for the honeymoon Gregori and Wren didn’t know they wanted

Bad-boy artist Gregori Ivanov wants nothing more than to marry Wren Davis. He’s asked her before—more than once—but she insisted on waiting until she’d established her own career. Now that the time is finally right, Gregori has one hell of a celebration in mind. Restaurants, museums and NYC luxury all the way…on top of all the newlywed sex they’ll be having.

The universe, unfortunately, did not get the message. When their plane is grounded in Idaho, they’re forced to improvise a road trip to get back to Seattle instead of the romantic getaway Gregori painstakingly planned. But that they’re together is what’s important, and with giant roadside potato museums, funky galleries in towns with little more than two stoplights and some seriously great diner food—in between all the great sex—Gregori and Wren find a honeymoon as unique and memorable as their love.

Not sure why this was a Cake sequel maybe I need to go back and relisten to Cake because I didn’t see the connection.

I did love Gregori and Wren it was a sweet short and I loved how gruff he is and how she just handles him without “handling” him if that makes sense.

Loved the narration!

I requested this on a whim and it was a fun story.

I liked Wren and Gregori well enough. She’s snarky and sassy and he’s got a gruff exterior, but is actually a squishy marshmallow.

Plot wise, it felt a tad repetitive. I did like their playfulness and how they each did special things for the other, but the writing didn’t get their chemistry across to me. There were several phrases reused and JFC, Gregori only snarled.

Overall, it was a quick and cute read. It is promoted to be able to read as a standalone, but I think I would have enjoyed it more if I was familiar with these characters.

My Thoughts

When first met Gregori Ivanov and Wren Davis in book 1, Cake the pair were immediately easy to relate to in many ways and in others not so much. Now 6 years later they are settled in with each other with only 1 little detail left to make Gregori happy, getting Wren to marry him.

Gregori is a man who knows what he wants and he lives his life taking full advantage of every decadently sinful aspect to it that he possibly can. That includes the best places to eat, the best places to stay and the beautiful women who find him to their liking. However all the other women are no longer in the picture and the one woman Gregori loves, Wren, keeps him fully satisfied in almost every way.

Wren is a woman whose hesitation to commit to a lifetime with her man is the only fly in what otherwise is a fairly smooth relationship between the two.

Now the time has finally come and Wren has said yes to Gregori's latest proposal of marriage, the fun comes when all his well laid plans become toast which leads the two to improvise.

Not only is this an eye-opening experience for Gregori but Wren as well when their new plans take them on a honeymoon journey neither are likely to ever forget.

To say that Gregori Ivanov and Wren Davis were enjoyable in book 1, Cake is actually an understatement. But in this sequel they are crazy fun as well as hotter than a 3-alarm fire!

There have been glimpses of Gregori and Wren in the Whiskey Sharp series, but it had been a while since I first read their book, Cake, so I did a quick re-read just to get reacquainted. I’m so glad I did this! I had forgotten much of their story, and I fell in love with them all over again. In Sugar, a sequel novella, Wren and Gregori are six or so years into their relationship and planning to get married. Gregori has it all planned out, and honestly, his plans are amazing—romantic and luxurious, and totally swoon-worthy. However, fate has something else in mind, and Wren—the more spontaneous of the two—takes over the wedding and honeymoon plans. For me, the best part of Sugar was seeing a whole new side of Gregori. He’s always come across as the quintessential hot, brooding Russian. A temperamental, demanding, often surly and arrogant artist used to getting his way and with a love for the finer things in life. Wren, on the other hand, is more down to earth, with a great sense of humor and a tremendous sense of fun and adventure. After Gregori’s plans are thwarted, Wren comes up with a completely new plan, and even then, not everything goes as planned. But the two of them end up having a truly interesting and unique wedding and honeymoon. Gregori enjoys himself despite the less than ideal circumstances. This to me showed not just a new, charming side of Gregori, but made me feel his love for Wren and how happy he was to spend his life with her.

I really enjoyed Sugar! It was fun, romantic in an offbeat, quirky way, sexy, and yes, sweet.

The very strong and memorable Gregori and Wren have finally tied the knot and their honeymoon becomes just as unique and memorable as their love is when their plans go awry and they end up on an impromptu road trip. Very sexy and romantic with lots of sizzling chemistry and scorching hot passion that holds readers captive throughout the steady paced plot. Readers can’t help but fall in love with this couple as they can practically feel the love that flows from the pages of this delightful romance and the author ensures that readers are treated to adventure and wonderful settings on a road trip that has readers feeling as if they are tagging along because it is so vividly portrayed.

Ok confession- somehow I totally missed Gregori and Wren's story! But I love this series and they have been mentioned more than once in the other books and I was able to read this with no confusion. These two just made me smile so hard. What a perfect pair! Gregori is so sexy- I love his style, the way he talks to his woman, his grunty grumbliness. Unghh, it's all good. Even his sweet tooth and snobbery about higher class accommodations. Wren is such a good balance for him. She's go with the flow, make life an adventure, put a positive spin on it. This was a fun and sexy novella.

Sugar by Lauren Dane is book Two in the Cake series and book 3.5 in the Whiskey Sharp series. This is the story of Gregori Ivanov and Wren Davis. I haven't yet read the previous book 'Cake' that start the story of Gregori and Wren. I was able to make this a standalone but enjoyed their story so much I do want to back track to read it.
This was a quick novella that caught you up with their story and Gregori goal to marry Wren. But his perfect planning hit a snag that leads them to an adventure.
Really enjoy Ms. Dane's writing...always get a great story from her.

If you enjoyed Cake, you’ll love Sugar. Wren and Gregori are back and hotter than ever! This is another quick read, it was a great “palate cleanser” for me between a heavy read and something new. If you want a sweet sexy read this is great but do take time to read Cake!

Sugar picks up with the couple six years after they finally got together. Gregori finally gets a yes from Wren when he proposes. On their way to eloping, weather diverts them and they decide on an impromptu road trip wedding/honeymoon. While I enjoyed this one, it wasn't my favorite of the two. The adventure was fun, but it didn't really add much to their story. It was a nice check-in and still worth checking out.

Overall, I had an enjoyable reading experience, and would definitely recommend this to fans of Cake. It also offers a lot of fun as a road trip romance. I want to note that while I don’t think it’s necessary to read the Whiskey Sharp books before this one, I do really recommend reading Cake first. I don’t think it will feel like quite a whole story on it’s own, without that framework first. Plus, Cake is lovely in a lot of ways and it will add to your enjoyment I think if you read it first.

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

This is the second book in the series (duet?) and I would suggest that you really need to read Cake first. Even better, read the Whiskey Sharp books too, as they are all linked.

The romance was fun, but this opportunity to catch up with Wren and Gregori was too good to miss. There is a lot to be said for enjoying a couple who have gone through the hard stuff and are now properly together. It is low angst, high romance and passion. Their journey is fun and full of the things that they both appreciate, or appreciate for each other.

This is the perfect story for those of us who always want a little more :-) getting to see how happy ever after could turn out, rather than being an aspiration at the end of a novel. Thank you Lauren Dane for giving us this indulgence.

I enjoyed this one a lot! These characters are a great balance for one another. Gregori all grumpy roughness and Wren the calm in his storm. Their chemistry is off the charts! I do recommend that you read Cake before reading this one though. Otherwise you may feel like you started the story in the middle. These characters first get together in Cake and Gregori has finally convinced Wren to marry him. He's made big plans to celebrate their marriage. Plans that apparently aren't going to happen after they get stranded in Idaho. Looks like they'll have to make a road trip back to Seattle. Let all the grumpy, sexy times begin! I definitely recommend this book.

REVIEW: 325stars--SUGAR is the sequel novella to Lauren Dane’s contemporary, adult CAKE romance story line focusing on artists and lovers Wren Davis, and Gregori Ivanov. SUGAR can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalment is revealed where necessary but I recommend reading book one CAKE for backstory and cohesion.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Wren and Gregori) SUGAR fast forwards Wren and Gregori’s story approximately six years wherein Gregori’s latest proposal of marriage is finally accepted by our storyline heroine. Having set his marriage plans into motion, Gregori booked a plane from Seattle to New York, in the hopes of celebrating his wedding with his bride to be but bad weather derailed the plane on the way to the Big Apple, such that our couple rented a car and made the cross –country journey back home. What ensues is a sweet, tender and gentle look as a surly Russian artist as he gives into his new wife’s sense of adventure and fun.

SUGAR is a quick read; a romantic, sugar-coated story of one couple’s adventurous honeymoon and the stops along the way.

Delicious

Just what I expected from a Lauren Dane novel. Sugar is a follow-up to an earlier novella published a few years ago titled Cake. That book featured Gregori, a volatile yet good hearted Russian artist, and Wren, a student/bike messenger/graphic artist-in-training who shared an attraction neither wanted to acknowledge at first.

Fast forward to Sugar....it's been six years and our reluctant couple are now ready to tie the knot! One would think the stars would align, and all would smooth sailing from this point on after their initial courtship, but what fun would that be? Instead Ms. Dane takes her readers on a roadtripping honeymoon with a puck-like bride and a somewhat petulant bridegroom. In Gregori's defense he is "Russian" as Wren likes to call him, emotional and volatile, but only extreme circumstances, and to her he is always loving. Back to the author who delights in putting her main characters into situations designed to make even the most hardened soul smile.

I loved Sugar! It is a wonderful book, and a great follow-up to Cake however, one does not have to read both to feel the full experience. They are perfect as single desserts, savored one at a time, but I do recommend having both.

I loved this novella! I fell hard for Gregori and Wren in, Cake. It's been a few years, but I got that same feeling reading them in this sequel.

Gregori and Wren have been together for 6 amazing years, and Gregori is determined to finally make her his wife. And then there's a wacky road trip across three states, and too many laughs to count!

Gregori and Wren are still heating up the sheets and slinging sarcasm all over the place. I absolutely love these two together.

I gotta tell ya, one of my favourite moments in the book is when we get a visit from Brody and Elise from the Brown Sibling series! And then there was mention of the ever delicious Hurley brothers! If you're a true Lauren Dane fan, you know the Hurley and Brown series are amazeballs!

This book was just fun and crazy sexy. It was delightful to meet up with some of my favourite Lauren Dane Characters.

This book can't be read as a stand alone. You need to read how Gregori and Wren get together in, Cake.

I received a copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Gregori and Wren first took center stage in Cake, a one-off novella in the Whiskey Sharp universe (is it a universe when it's a barber shop in Pioneer Square?). This is their (literal) journey to happily ever after, starting with a grounded plane in what Montana. Gregori, a grumpy and wanna-be controlling artist, wants the perfect wedding weekend for Wren in NYC, but the weather demands otherwise. Wren coaxes him into a courthouse and then a Pacific Northwest road trip through Montana, Idaho, and eastern Washington.

By all rights I should hate Gregori because I'm not into grumpy, bossy men, but he loves sweets and champagne, so we'll get along just fine. Wren is practical, cheerful, and determined, and refuses to bow to his attempts at imperiousness, which is lovely. And most of all, I adore Dane's skill at building independent characters who are in love but not defined by their love.

Sugar by Lauren Dane was a cute little read for sure. Wren and Gregori were a fun couple. Wren is super spunky and Gregori has a rugged appeal to make you swoon.

A downed plane leads to an impromptu road trip for Wren and Gregori, leading to the honeymoon the didn't know they wanted.

I love the banter between Wren and Gregori. Their relationship is fun and enjoyable. However, at times I felt lost when reading this story. It states that it can be read as a standalone but I feel that I should have read Cake before diving in. It would have made some situations understandable. Overall, the writing was good and I am inclined to one click Cake.

Short and sweet. I read Cake a looooong time ago that I can't remember much of it anymore. Reading Sugar reminded me that Gregori's grumpy Russian came before the Petrovs and Orlovs of Lauren Dane's current series and that Wren typifies the sassy and capable heroines she excels in writing.

I enjoyed this nearly conflict-free road-trip novella. My husband and I did a similar road trip when we were newly married and I relate so much with Gregori and Wren's adventures and their responses to the situations happening around them.

Sugar just made me smile the entire time I was reading it and sometimes that's all you need. Thanks, Lauren Dane for writing this gift to your fans.

A quick read that has Gregori, wanting to marry Wren. When their plans are derailed by Mother Nature and engine trouble with the plane. Wren comes up with her own plan that also has them taking a road trip which Gregori really does not want to do but does anyway for love. The two characters are expressing their love for each other from page one to the end whether in bed, the shower, or just getting dress. So you as the reader do in fact know that they are definitely into each other. A good fast story. I received this book from Netgalley.com I gave it 4 stars. Follow us at www.1rad-readerreviews.com

Returning back to a Ms. Dane romance reminds me again of why I admire her so much. I loved this book and it gave the best warm fuzzies all day long. Sometimes, Ms. Dane creates angsty and emotionally painful stories before she brings about a happily ever after. In this sequel, the reader is treated to what happens after the happily ever after. In a word - magical.

I was so excited when I found out Sugar was a sequel to Cake, because Cake is one of my favorite Lauren Dane stories. After seeing glimpses of Gregori and Wren in the Whiskey Sharp series I wanted more from them because I always felt like there could be more to their story. I’m so happy that Sugar didn’t let me down. Sugar follows them on a trip that hits one road bump after another in what turns out to be a surprising amusing vacation. Gregori is still just as hot and moody all while being completely lovable, and Wren is his perfect match.

Wren is one to always tease her man, “I stand corrected. I was after your cookies and cake from the start. But then we had *** and I realized you had other qualities I loved.” Gregori is just not a morning person, "he flipped her off as he stood and, naked as a jaybird, headed into the bathroom. “Don’t go anywhere without me,” he called through the closed door." I loved how Wren's personaliry balanced out Gregori's.

This one was fun to read. I liked that Gregori knew Wren enough to know what would be her perfect wedding and planned it. It’s just too bad that Mother Nature screwed up the plans. Wren managed to rescue things and while they weren’t as Gregori planned, they found fun and craziness with their drive back home. The odd stops and driving allowed them some quality time alone to reveal in their relationship change.

This is a sequel I didn't know I needed or wanted. Gregori and Wren had a great coming together in Cake. Now that that havebeen together for years, I love how Gregori wanted to spoil Wren and romance her. I loved even more that Wren could show Gregori that you don't need money, fancy cars, or luxury hotels for romance. Just each other.

Six years after Gregori and Wren got together, they're finally getting married. Wren was waiting for her career to approach the trajectory of his. Now they're on their way to New York to get married. Except there are storms and they get grounded in Idaho. They decide to road trip it back to Seattle.
A nice story but didn't add much but to the Wren and Gregori story.

Sweetnesses

I always enjoy revisiting characters from previous books. We have the pleasure of reading about Gregori and Wren not only in their original book, Cake, but in the subsequent Whiskey Sharp trilogy. They are such an interesting couple that has been presented as independent stars in their fields, but also great friends to their families and friends. Great read.

I’m a big Lauren Layne fan, so it was disappointing when this one fell flat for me. Sugar doesn’t add much to Wren and Gregor’s story. If you’re the type who wishes their story had gone on and on, you’ll probably enjoy this novella. Otherwise, I say give it a pass.

I received an ARC of this book, from the publisher, via NetGalley, in exchange for a fair and honest review.
