Hino Horror #10

Death's Reflection

In this second volume of four novelas, Hino continues his theme of the intertwining of innocence and evil in shojo horror manga style. When Yuki and friends discover a corpse reflected in the bathroom mirror at school, they believe it to be a joke. However, gruesome events unfold that will lead them to regret they were ever so foolish. Other stories include a girl whose beauty makes her the victim of a terror campaign; another who is bullied by a teacher but, in death, achieves her revenge; and classroom 3.7, into which students enter but never leave.

Four stories from one of the three kings of manga macabre (the other two being Kazuo Umezu and Junji Ito, of course). Features his take on the urban legend of cursed long, black hair (with a very gory twist!), a creepy tale of a classroom of students that disappears, a mystery killer, and what would likely be the best anti-smoking PSA any school-age kid in Japan could read. The shojo style artwork juxtaposed against the style used for the ghosts, blood and guts, which any fans of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark will immediately fall in love with, is jarring and what makes the feel of Hino's work so unique.

Mediocre, though it has a particular vibe to it, which I liked.
The second story is just hilarious, and story 4 had the best art.

EDIT: I would like to include my thoughts on another one of Mr. Hino’s works, Lullaby of Dead Spirits. The reason I am writing this here is that, not only could I not find this work on Goodreads, but I also hardly encountered any mention of it on the internet in general. It seems to be one of his more obscure works, and whenever you look for it, you’ll only be met with his other, more famous work, Lullabies from Hell.
Overall, it was unimpressive. I found nothing about it particularly interesting; the plot and mystery were very basic, and compared to Death’s Reflection, the art style didn’t have any of that special allure.
It seems like most of his other works are more similar in style to this one, which I find disappointing.

Hideshi Hino is one wacky guy. This isn't his best book, not by a long shot. That title would go to Hell Baby, followed by Panorama of Hell. However, Hino doesn't make a bad book. That's just a straight-up fact. Recommended as all things Hino are solid.

someone vomiting up a torrent of cigarettes and then being sliced open to reveal a torrent of cigarettes instead of guts *is* pretty effective anti-smoking imagery tbh
