Angel Fire

Rate this book
John Dury is a corporate predator who hunts and kills businesses for money, power, and bonuses paid in designer drugs. The latest drug to hit the city is Angel Fire. A powerful sedative and hallucinogen that seems to open the door to the next world. Instead of finding the keys to heaven, John opens the door to hell - spiraling into a nightmare dimension of ghosts and demons – and the faceless shadow that waits in the deepest blackest reaches of his own soul. Part Faustian fable, part Gothic horror story – Angel Fire is a powerful tale of corruption and redemption.

I found this a little confusing at first. It took me a while to work out what was happening, but this could have been intentional, what with John's drug use.. This is an interesting story overlaid with hallucination and ghosts. John finds himself trapped in a nightmare living in his late wife's haunted ancestral home in Scotland.
I think the twist was good, though I sort of expected it. I also thought the art style fit very well with the kind of vibes the story gives. Overall it was an interesting read!

Despite the forgivable art, this had great potential. I really, really wanted to love it. In fact, the story gets more intriguing as the main character makes his way to Scotland. The creepy atmosphere. The questions raised. The slowly revealed town secrets.
But all these seemed pointless with that final reveal. Kinda weird they decided to go for such ending, considering how the average reader hates it. Ugh!

Perhaps the only thing that I can complain about in this book is that it doesn't push its conceit quite far enough. The drug element is all but forgotten about after the first act. The ending, which I don't want to ruin but has a distinct M. Night Shyamalan quality to it, comes so far off the left field that it almost feels like a cope out. Nothing had led us to suspect that possibility so when it comes it's not quite fulfilling, just surprising. Which is a shame because up until that point they had build a very interesting spooky gothic setting that is squandered by the last two pages (literally). I still enjoyed it, but I wish they had just taken a little bit longer to drop the other shoe.

Woah. Plot twist ending!! Holy crap! That was super good. I am hoping to see if there is more to this than just the one story.

Big takeaway here, there is so much to lose when your morality and mortality is called into battle. Like, do you want to live? Or do you want to LIVE? It was a pretty crazy ride from start to finish.

Will read again, that's for sure!

As far as graphic novels go this one is lame.

It reads more like an old right-wing christian comic book as opposed to anything new and spectacular.

Good book for the toilet

Started off well and great art throughout, but the ending had one of the worst cop outs in storytelling and a personal hate of mine, thoroughly let down
