A Zodiac Dragon Series so hot it will scorch the pages. They thought they'd live forever, but living and existing are not the same. Marcus Kane is the first of twelve. Dragon-born in the sign of Taurus he carries all the traits of the bull--the good and the bad. He's strong-willed, unbreakable. Deadly on land and in the sky, but when Marcus falls in love, he falls hard. He wasn't meant to fall for the wolf, Abrial. His only job was to protect those he loves--his family. Abrial is Alpha-born. The daughter of the Bloodstone's pack Alpha, she will stop at nothing to defend what's hers--every wolf--and every inch of her new found territory--and she'll break all the rules to do it. But when a rival pack moves in ready to spill blood, Abrial comes up against an enemy deadlier than she understands. So she turns to a stranger for help--a man who drove into a tree to save her. A man who smells like danger, but looks at her with fire in his eyes. Marcus Kane. Family. Honor. Love. What happens when those three collide? Who will be left standing? Who will be left heartbroken?
I have been an avid reader for longer than I can remember, desiring the darker, edgier works of Bram Stoker, Stephen King, Dean Koontz. I first started writing in High School giving that away when my first attempt was nothing more than dribble. I wish now that I kept at it, pursued it with a hunger that I currently possess.
Writing is my passion, it is what fuels the fires inside of me and it is an all-or-nothing furnace that keeps me up at all hours.
I am married to a wonderful supportive husband, I have 2 wonderful kids and the best friends that I have waited some 35 odd years to meet.
Taurus (Zodiac Dragon Guardians #1) aka (Guardians of the Stars Book 1) by Kim Faulks is suppose to be an Adult Paranormal Suspense Romance. What it really is, is a Disaster! The writing is horribly disjointed. Jumbled and chaotic thoughts thrown together that make absolutely no sense. I am so disappointed. I actually thought I might have somehow gotten a bad copy. So I went through a lot of the reviews on Goodreads and Amazon to see what the lower star reviews said. I came to the conclusion I did not have a bad copy. The book is just that badly written. I wish I could reach out and slap every person who left 5 star reviews! Liars!! Shame on you!! Errors of every kind is en mass in this book. From spelling to grammar to entire areas that needed to be edited out. Incohesive sentence structure on every page and virtually every paragraph. Repetitive thoughts from both H/h. What sounded like a great idea for a great book turned into torture to read. The torture started on the first page and continued through to the last page. There were areas that were interesting. But you are so bogged down in the disordered and spasmodic writing, you can not enjoy it. Ms. Faulks, find a good editor and rewrite this book! You have a great idea and it is buried here!
Luckily this book was free. It is a love it or hate. I expected so much more from this book after reading the blurb but it was one MASSIVE disappointment. I have never given such a low rating before but this book needs and deserves it. A good idea that was not followed on. The descriptive sentences left much to be desired. Very slow going, I felt like I was wading through mud. Full of too much angst, self-abasement with very little action until the very end. These twelve guardians had supposedly locked themselves away from everyone for hundreds of years instead of protecting those they were meant too and keeping the peace. Their mansion is falling into disrepair but they have the latest cars in the garage. I expected big tough guardians and got sick weak puppies. The only ones with any gumption and life were Xael and Zadoc. Some of the guardians hardly appear in this book even though there is a big battle in their house. The lot of women in this series is ridiculously dire, only good for cooking, cleaning and F-ing, being traded to vampires and demons or used and ignored. I really lost the plot when a wolf agreed to leave his mate and newborn baby behind as they would slow the pack down. I should have stopped reading then. Not my kind of shifter story. Then when Marcus came to save her, Abriel acted like a complete nitwit. She is all strong and tough through the book to save her sister but she was going to stay with the bad guy. WTF and Abriel was all boo hoo, it’s my fault my sister has been held captive and hurt. NO, it is her spineless, gutless father who SOLD Rowan and their mother to the scumbags. The ending was so over dramatized as to be stupid.
The spelling mistakes were so abundant as to be ridiculous, who proof read this. Will not be reading any more.
A good start to a series. It was a fast paced plot and I really liked the characters. I'll definitely check out the others in this series and more of this writers work.
My Thoughts: I like the way this author spins a tale. However, I do not like the way she draws out the overly dramatic scenes of unbearable pain and suffering. The dragged out crawling. If once only, then perhaps you get away with it. But all the bleeding time?!? It gets old real fast! Then there's the unrealistic fight scenes where the main character(s) just stand around watching while people gets shot or killed... what's that all about?!? And that is the main reason that this book would never get a 5 out of 5 with me despite the wonderful world building that this book has. Lucky for me, the audible app allows me to speed up the narration to twice faster than normal or so. However, the faster you go the less intelligible the words become. But that is alright because I can also read it in the ebook at the same time. What it does do though is make the drawn out dramatic pain and suffering scenes go faster. Then I can titer the narration back to normal speed once the scene is over. Pretty awesome, huh?! Then I don't have to suffer those dragged out dramas for very long. Win, win, for me! Plus I really like th premise of this story! Sure, the guardians been dormant too long... That is their mistake. It could happen... but the fight of the good versus evil, that is awesome too! I'm just such a sucker for the undedogs winning. So I'm really glad I found this book!
Empirical Evaluation: Story telling quality = 4.5 Character development = 3.5 Story itself = 3 Writing Style = 2.5 Ending = 3.5 World building = 4 Cover art = 4 Pace = (7 hrs and 56 mins listening time) Plot = 2.5 Narration = 4
Wow! I didn't want this book to end, I loved it.Then again, What's not to love it has Demons, Mages, Wolves, Vampires, strong minded kick ass women and Dragons! 12 of them :)
Taurus is the first ( of many Yeah!) of the guardians of the stars series.
We discover a darkness taking over as some of the wolf packs and vampires hunt humans for sport and recreation. They all cower when they discover the myths and legends they grew up with are real. As the Guardian's are brought back into the mix. For years they've kept out of the battles, but something changes. Forcing them back into fighting for existence.
Marcus Kane ( the eldest of the Guardians) offers his famiy home and protection to a group of abandoned wolves. Then again he soon discovers he would do anything she asked of him. She being Abrial, the fiesty alpha female wolf shifter and she will do anything to protect her pack.
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Taurus is the first book in the Zodiac Dragon Series by Kim Faulks. I was under the impression that each book was a stand alone but the ending of this novel suggests that they are not and should be read in chronological order. This premise sounded exciting and great but I think there was a lot left on the table. The author did a phenomenal job describing the climate of the world in which they were forced to live in and how poorly women were regarded but, I found everything else repetitive. Oftentimes I wondered if I had reread the same page only to discover that I had in fact scrolled on. Some of the story felt like it went off on weird tangents that were convoluted and didn't add to the story. I really think this book needs another thorough edit. I don't think I care enough to find out what the rest of the series is like since this book failed to grab my attention.
I received an ARC of this book for an honest review.
If you're a fan of dark, twisted, intense, hot, and sexy paranormal stories with a great plot-line and awesome characters, Taurus by Kim Faulks is the book for you.
The book description seemed very promising, so did some of the better reviews. But after starting to read this, I'm wondering if those other reviewers read a different book then me?! I just could not get into this book to get beyond 25% of the way thru! I really wanted to quit at 15%. There was no prologue, real back-story, or lead in, to draw you into this. It just jumps in head first into things the reader has no clue about, leaving this reader floundering, trying to figure out what the heck was going on! The story jumped around so much it felt awkwardly written. I felt like the book is still in rough draft form, & needing a lot more fill in of the background info & maybe some re-arranging to get a flow. Each page left me confused & lost at where this was going. I just could not bring myself to care or to continue reading. Needless to say, I won't be reading the other books in this series. On the upside, I didn't see much in the way of typos or grammar issues in the 25% I did read..
Taurus is the 1st of the Dragon Guardians books, it's the story of Marcus, the bullheaded, stubborn Taurus and Abrial the female of a wolf pack whose only concern is getting her sister, whose been missing for years, back from the enemy wolf pack. It is not your normal dragon book. This is a high octane, fast paced, bloody, sexy read that leaves you wanting more and waiting eagerly for the next book !! 5☆'s for Kim Faulks !! I recieved a gifted copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review
I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book but I ended up really enjoying it. So much action and suspense , just what I like. The best part was that there was very little sex scenes. I'm bored with shifter books always having so much sex scenes. This book had the best thing: an actual story with an actual relationship building.
I'm going to read the rest of this series as I need to find out about the other characters. I like all the brothers and the sister Xael, never read about a scorpion shifter and I like Odessa too!
Being a Taurus myself it was a given that I would read this book. Disappointed? Absolutely not! The careful blending of an inward bull with a fearsome dragon....WHAT!!! Add in facing near death and finding possible salvation and it all equals brilliance in epic proportions. Totally ran my kindle battery down to no life trying to squeeze in another page before it blanked out on me, then attached my beloved ereader to its cord of life and stood next to my power corner flipping more pages. And Xael? Help me now! Badass is now defined by her! Yet another writer has me addicted yet again! This voluntary review is based against a kindle unlimited copy.
The general premise seems to be that there are twelve dragon shifters, each born under a different sign and they are supposed to be the Guardians of the weak. They have kinda disappeared so some evil werewolves have teamed up with vampires and demons and are selling women and children...because women are worth only that. Abrial is from a different pack and hates the way women are treated and wants to get her sister back from the evil wolves. Abrial and Marcus, the Taurus dragon, cross paths and Marcus fights to help Abriel despite her best efforts.
I did not enjoy how this was written, I didn't know who was speaking half the time and everything was just really disjointed. I kept on though, thinking that the story might save it and things were ok until about 75%. Marcus storms the proverbial castle to save Abrial and how does she thank him?! She says ok well now that I'm saved I didn't really need it in the first place and you can go. First of all, you totally needed saving and what kind of dolt doesn't take the help of a dragon whose nickname is the Bloodletter. I just have no time for females who think being strong and being stupid are the same thing...throw in the writing style and I thought it best I move on.
I liked the synopsis and thought the book showed promise. But, I had a hard time following the story and the characters were not likable (may be due to the narration issues). There was no distinction made when a person was speaking openly, internally, telepathically, or in a vision. This confused me throughout the story. I could not figure out the reason behind several things that were happening that were probably crucial to the story due to this issue. Overall, I think this was all over the place. Rewriting the dialogue would be a great place to start. There were some parts that lost me in the details, not in a good way, either. I don't know why this book has such high ratings. Maybe I just missed it or maybe it's just not for me. 1.5 stars
“Taurus” is the first of Kim Faulks Guardians of the Stars series and I loved it. I thought it was a great first in the series and I am looking forward to reading more about the zodiac dragon siblings. If you love reading about dragons, mages, vampires, shifters, demons, and romance, then this is the series for you. I loved reading about Marcus and how he finds his purpose in Abrial, a wolf shifter, he will do anything to keep her safe. I look forward to reading more about Marcus's family.
I cant believe I didn’t read these books earlier as I love Kim’s later books but I am also not normally a fan of book sets that have different characters as the main focus changing from book to book. That said I loved each of these books as the main storey runs and continues throughout but in each book a different set of characters are the main focus. I have given each book and the series 4 stars as they are very good but not quite addictive enough to hit the 5 star mark – if 4.5 were an option then this is where I would be. Book 1 – This is Marcus and Abrial’s storey. It’s a little slower than the rest to start with but that is because Kim spends a lot of time wold building and character developing and the later books are faster paced. That said the storey line is really good and has quite a few twists and turns to give you a little whiplash along the way. Abrial is looking for her sister and is manipulated into doing something terrible in order to get her back, she is then forced to run from her pack before she is captured and realises that not all is as it first seems. Twists and turns galore keep you captivated. Marcus and his family used to look out for all supernatural creatures especially those who needed help and sancuaray but over the years they have retreated into solitude and have started to wither away. However destiny has other idea’s and throws Abrial into Marcus’s life giving him a new focus. This storey is about love, loyalty and family full of witches, shifters, vampires and demonds.
The plot of this story was simply amazing. It was something unique and interesting. The plot introduction was a little slow but that sometimes happens in paranormal books. I liked the concept of linking the zodiac signs to the Guardians. What I did not like was the story-telling style of the author. Half the time I was re-reading most paragraphs because I couldn't make heads and tails of what was happening. This got on my nerves in the latter half of the book and closer to the end, I just wanted it to get over. I liked the character of Abrial. She was amazing; standing up against everyone to fight for herself and for the weak. But even her character seemed to wane as the story progressed. Also, the character build-up of everyone was lacking. There was a good depth to the characters of the Guardians and especially Marcus in the start, but it just went downhill later. I still don't get the love that Marcus and Abrial share; seemed more like a good friendship formed under excruciating circumstances, but not love.
Anyway, since I skimmed through a lot of pages in the last chapters of the book, I will read it sometime later in the future. Maybe I'll like it better then. After reading the first chapter, I just expected better from the book. However, I think since I liked the plot and it has already been introduced in the first book, for the most part, the other books in the series might be better.
Given the book blurb I had high hopes for this novel, but it was a definite don't judge a book by its blurb moment for me. There are a lot better books out there, this is one to miss in my opinion - 1 star and an audible return.
Overblown descriptions, too much emphasis on exposition and not enough character and plot development. Choppy story development meant it was often difficult to follow, especially when listening to an audio. If you lost focus for even a small moment, it was almost impossible to work out what was going on without having to skip back at least 30 secs, which got old quickly.
There was a distinct lack at the end of real and believable 'closure' on any of the events and/or relationship which developed in the novel. Added to that, there were some major cliffhangers at a very abrupt end. The cynic in me might interpret this as a shameless bid to automatically persuade middling reviewers who want to know what happens to buy the next instalment, (and of course the inevitable 10 other signs of the zodiac after that) when ordinarily they would have given it as pass.
Narrator was bland and injected no sex appeal into the male characters, she just sounded like she was getting over laryngitis and overall the performance was a bit 'narrate by numbers' with very little passion or interest in the content.
It's ok. I mean, you'd think shifters, dragons, demons .... fierce right ? I didn't actually get that. I mean you have a group of shifters that see women as lower than dirt. You have another that is into human trafficking. Their leader suffers from some kind of mutation although that's not explained too much and it seems like he's the only one affected, not sure why that is. Oh and the dragons ? They have two names, their zodiac sign and and their given name, AND there are 12 of them, good luck trying to remember all the names.
Honestly, I was not a fan of the writing style, I had a hard time picturing some of the things the author was describing, such as the way the H was holding the h with his wings. I didn't really enjoy the plot too much either, and I just didn't feel the connection between the two MCs. It didn't draw me in enough to want to read the rest of the series, much less pay $8 for the audiobook.
Taurus is a good story gone wrong. The story lacks focus and definition. The writing style is horrendous and hard to follow. There is no chemistry between Abrial and Marcus and the characters are poorly defined. To top off all of this jumbled mess, there are editing issues throughout.
Disappointing read as the plot of this series had the potential to be a different and new addition to the paranormal genre. Faulks has seemingly omitted any significance in why this series is called Zodiac Dragon Guardians other than each dragon is named after a zodiac sign. I wrongfully assumed some solar or psychic connection.
At times reading this story was just plain painful because there is a dream and out of body experience section thrown in the middle of reality. Too hard to follow and too dense to see clearly what the author is trying to relay. Worst of all, this book is a dreaded cliffhanger.
Mercifully, this book is free on Amazon so I am not out anything but precious time. On my Were Scale of Hotness, 1.5 stars.
I’m not even sure what to think. This book started out and continued to be, until the very end, confusing. There was A LOT in this story that relied on assumed knowledge that shouldn’t have been present in a First book of a series.
There were unanswered question and actions that didn’t make much sense like they should have. It was almost like we started the story in the middle of the Plot instead of at the inciting incident. There was also a lot of flip-flopping between POVs that at times was confusing.
Then there was other thing like basic descriptions of characters, events and places that made little to no sense too. And as it stands I am unsure as to how many siblings were mentioned. Too many names thrown around with little to no explanation. (Though as the series’s title suggests there should have been 12)
All in all this book was All over the place while making you feel like you’ve missed a paragraph or twelve in info-dump. Basically it feels like there’s a Prequel missing that would have explained the world a little better.
I really enjoyed this book. I think the descriptions added really brought the book to life. What I don't understand is why Aries, was not the first book in the series as its the first astrology sign in western zodiac mythology. I also was confused on the guardians having so much problems and fear with the demons, when earlier in the book it states that they killed wolves, demons and vampires alike. It also seemed for a family of creatures like them, that killing off 50wolves would have been no problem but then that may leave us with no real book. I just wish the foes had been a little more powerful. As well if Abrial's sister was so powerful, why did she fear her capturer? There are 11 books in the series so I'm assuming more information will unfold. Overall the book had some very weird unbalanced power scenes. Love, love, love the patriarchy associated within its reads and the usurping of it. I was completely invested in Odessa and Abrial.
Marcus is the oldest of new 12 old dragons, 11 male and 1female. Over a 1000 years that they have stayed to themselves , not to say they don't have cars, phones and anything else they want or need. He meets a young female wolf who he almost ran over and is drawn to her. Later when she needs help to save another young wolf who she has just help deliver a brand new little girl and her father is ordering that they be left in the woods to die after all they are only females. So Marcus tells her that they can all come to the dragons house and he will protect them. Of course the evil will follow them there and a battle will be fought. The dragons were only a shadow of themselves due to not doing what they were born to do but with their growing care and protection of the wolves they are coming back to what they once where. I want to read the rest of the books to find out each dragons story.
First I like to start with I did love the premise of this book so much potential and I still believe it does. However this book did lose me many times, I was getting upset because it was all over the place. Too much happening all at once, but eventually I did come to enjoy the book. It wasn't as bad as I thought even though I still have no clue what was going on. The storyline picked up towards the end and it kinda ended in a anticlimactic cliffhanger that I wish had a better resolve I guess you can say? One thing this book did do? It made me want to get the next one. Like I said I loved the premise and the series looks promising so I am not going to give up so easily.
I enjoyed this book for the most part. Kim Faulks is an excellent writer and her attention to detail is wonderful. The problem is that she tends to throw way too much information at the reader without always following through. A good story should have an ebb and a flow to it. This feels more like a tsunami with multiple characters, back story and action being tossed around at the same time. Several times I had to reread a section to make sense of what was written. There are so many questions left unanswered and I hope they will be dealt with in the next book.
This series has potential. I like the premise of twelve dragons just existing and ignoring the outside world and its problems, suddenly realizing that it is time to get involved and start protecting the world again. While the story was good, it was confusing at times and at some points I was confused who was speaking. I also had a problem with the editing. Hopefully within the series we will find out how they lost their dragons and are other types of supes. I would also like an explanation of the zodiac signs. I am going to read the next book, Aquarius before I give up on this series.
Being a zodiac fan and a Taurus I was really disappointed not only did his personality didn't Match the sign it left me with a lot of questions and really confused half the time especially with the he said she said someone said something to someone else but it didn't say she said this to him\her or he said that to her/him so I had to re read and try to figure out who said what which took me out of the story and think a little more detail on the surrounding could have been nice in my opinion but I liked the idea of putting dragon and zodiac together
I like the idea of this series. I like the characters and the world she build. I found some of the scenes confusing though as there was so much action you really couldn't decipher who was doing what and why. So far Odessa is my favorite character. For being such big bad Guardians they don't seem to be the most powerful creates in this series. I suppose that is what makes it more compelling. I look forward to the next sign of the series and hope some of the details become clearer.
I didn't like this book, I thought it had good potential but I felt like it jumped around too much, it just felt really scattered and nothing explained except all the men except the dragons were awful human beings. I know it was the first book and I see the other books in the series have higher reviews I just dont know if this one grabbed me enough to want to read the next ones, I'll have to see.
I liked the basic premise of this story but found it difficult to read. It was very hard to follow the conversation and wasn't clear which character was speaking. Although it read more like a rough draft, I was interested enough to continue reading and finish the story. Marcus and Abrial grew on me and I would like to know more about the family of dragons.
It felt like there were a lot of the over the top theatrics and the main girl was pretty helpless a lot, at one point she couldn't even run through a forest without getting hurt.
Personally I'm not a fan of damsels in need of rescuing which isn't 100% what she is but it felt like she was that at least 60% of the time. So if you do enjoy that I'd recommend this book but it's not my cup of tea.
