How to Build Self-Discipline to Exercise: Practical Techniques and Strategies to Develop a Lifetime Habit of Exercise

Rate this book
How to Build Self-Discipline to Discover Proven Strategies to Finally Get in Shape and Exercise on a Regular Basis for the Rest of Your Life Everywhere you go, you see gyms, videos, and books about exercise, advertising how they can help you get in shape fast and easy. You've probably even put some money down before, vowing that THIS was the year you'd get in shape, lose that extra weight, and become the energetic person you know is hiding inside you. Unfortunately, life happens, and you fall into the habit of "I'll start tomorrow." Your motivation drops, and your self-discipline fails to push you through to achieve your goals. You begin to make you'll be really sore after working out, it's been too long since you've last exercised, you don't have willpower, your friends and family tell you to be happy with how you are, you think you're too weak, inflexible or otherwise unfit for exercise, and many more. There was that one time you started a program, but you couldn't keep up with the weekly or monthly goals, so you got frustrated and gave up. All of that has added up to make you think you're incapable of starting and continuing an exercise program. You're afraid you aren't mentally or physically strong enough, but still hold out the hope that someday a magic pill will change all that. The magic exists today, but it's not as easy or fast as swallowing a pill. However, it can be simple and enjoyable. How to Build Self-Discipline to Exercise is a concise, practical guidebook on how to introduce and keep exercise in your life. Inside, you'll - why the most common type of motivation people use to exercise is usually ineffective (and which types of motivation are much stronger) - the wrong "P" that will lead you to giving up when you face obstacles - how to overcome procrastination and finally start exercising – including a slightly uncomfortable trick that will ensure you'll get plenty of exercise - how to find time to exercise despite a hectic schedule (and surprising math that shows you actually lose time when you don't make time for exercise) - practical tricks and tips to stay motivated forever, even when you encounter obstacles - how to enjoy exercise while still getting the most powerful benefits of it ( if your workout involves "work," it's not a good workout) - how to prevent injuries, improve recovery, and handle the inevitable muscle soreness so you stick to exercise even if your body acts against you - how to deal with other people, wrong expectations, and negativity (from both your surroundings and yourself in the form of self-criticism or self-doubt) When put together and acted upon, the six chapters in this book – supported by over 80 references to scientific studies and credible experts – will help you form a new habit and make one of the most important changes you'll ever make in your life. Purchase the book now and let's embark on the journey to learn how.

Martin Meadows is the pen name of an author who has dedicated his life to personal growth. He constantly reinvents himself by making drastic changes in his life. Over the years, he has: regularly fasted for over 40 hours, taught himself two foreign languages, lost over 30 pounds in 12 weeks, ran several businesses in various industries, took ice-cold showers and baths, lived on a small tropical island in a foreign country for several months, and wrote 400-page long novel's worth of short stories in one month.

Yet, self-torture is not his passion. Martin likes to test his boundaries to discover how far his comfort zone goes. His findings (based both on his personal experience and scientific studies) help him improve his life. If you're interested in pushing your limits and learning how to become the best version of yourself, you'll love Martin's works.

Downloaded this book to read on the plane without much expectation. This was a practical and quick read that’s straight to the point with good research references and covers all aspects of building the self-discipline to exercise from starting, continuing and being consistent, to the mental baggage that gets in the way.

One surprising insight that I didn’t expect from this book was on self-esteem and self-respect. Looks like I have some work to do.

“Some common tendencies of people with low self-esteem include:
- criticizing themselves for everything […]
-hypersensitivity to criticism and excessive will to please others […]
-chronic indecision, fear of failure and/or mistakes, and perfectionism.“

These points hit home and made me reflect more on myself. For that, this book gets a 4.

This book will help you understand the types of motivations that exist to build discipline , and how choosing the bad motivation can ruin your willpower to exercise. It also provides great tips to start and keep exercising.

Although Martin did have a few good tips I was turned off of this book the minute he included hiring a maid to take 2-3 hr chores off your hands as his first solution for not enough time to exercise. I skimmed through it from that point on and that was early in the book. There were other recommendations that had me raising my eyebrows as I felt that this was a book for the sake of making a book not for the sake of truly helping people become habitual with exercise. A positive takeaway from this book was I realized that I cannot look to others to help me find time or become regular with exercising or better yet movement, I have to rely on me and I am totally capable of anything.

Nice little book on habit formation geared to exercise. I'd give it 3.5 stars. Very simple and accessible and some new ideas/approaches, even for someone who has read much on habits.
