Rosen's Website should provide all this and more. It's http://www.fidosopher.com. Nonetheless: Michael J. Rosen is an American author and illustrator with over 120 books of fiction, nonfiction, humor, picture books, poetry, and more. With a strong interest in nature and animals, reflecting his animal behavior degree from Ohio State University, Rosen resides within a peaceful crease of Central Ohio with his pack of animal companions that include 2 small koi ponds he helped build on the 100 acres he shares in the foothills of the Ohio Appalachians. An avid dog lover, he was inspired by Chant, his newest Australian stumpy-tail cattle dog, which led to the creation of his newest book of fiction, The Tale of Rescue, which will be released in October 2015. With an MFA in poetry from Columbia University, Rosen also showcases his skills and talents in other projects such as The Maine Coon’s Haiku: And Other Poems for Cat Lovers (2015).
Not a big math fan, however, this book and it's equations were unbelievably interesting, AND fun! I don't know which was more engaging, the art or the text, so I'll call it even.
Can a piggy bank hold 1 million pennies? How many glasses of lemonade would it take to fill a swimming pool? Is it possible to send a birthday card to everyone on the planet? This book has all the answers, and the numbers are mind-boggling!
Mind-Boggling Numbers, written by Michael J. Rosen and illustrated by Julia Patton, is an incredibly fun read! Written in question and answer format, the questions are both fun and puzzling, resulting in some fascinating answers. Children and adults will find the math engaging, and everyone is certain to learn something new. The questions present unrealistic situations, but then use real math processes to reach the answer. These word problems are way more fun than figuring out traditional problems. The illustrations accompanying each Q & A are charming and funny, and will keep children entertained as they contemplate each dilemma. And to top it off, at the end of the book, each problem is worked through in depth, showing the math steps necessary to reach each answer. Any book that can introduce math in a fun and entertaining way is a definite winner!
Thank you to Net Galley and Lerner Publishing for a reading copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This book contains a mind boggling math problem on each page. The questions are all those that require estimation and major calculations such as how many glasses of lemonade would it take to fill an olympic swimming pool or how long would it take me to sign a card to send to every person on earth. All the questions are accompanied by cute illustrations and funny comments. The book explains how the answer would be found as well as giving the answer. At the back is a glossary as well as more explanations and further reading. This is a great book for a junior classroom to get children thinking about all the ways you use math in everyday life.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Mind-Boggling Numbers is an amusing way to bring math into the real world. Even if the questions aren't plausible, children will be interested in the answers. How long would it take to walk to the moon? How many glasses of lemonade fit into an Olympic-sized swimming pool?
For upper elementary math teachers, Mind-Boggling Numbers offers a great introduction for fun with numbers. After reading the book with your class, have your students create their own mind-boggling questions and have their classmates try to solve them!

Mind-boggling is right! The questions might seem basic, but the numbers that answer them are really, really big! Fun illustrations give context to the questions, and the actual mathematical process used to answer each question is included at the back, as well as metric conversion tables and suggestions for further reading. This is great fun for anyone who loves to think about crazy mathematical questions.
Wow, that's a lot of math! I loved this! What a great way to get kids to correlate math problems to the read world even if the real world part is kind of silly. This would be a great book to take problem by problem and challenge students to work the out or just look at them for inspiration on how to work through difficult ideas. There are so many different avenues one could follow to use this with children in a home or classroom setting. Awesome book with brilliant illustrations!
Netgalley ARC Mind-Boggling Numbers gives young mathematicians fascinating math problems with astounding answers. Even kids who are not math fans will enjoy this mind-boggling read!
If you could hike to the moon, how long would it take? If my big brother got his commercial pilot’s license and we lived 3 miles from my school, how long would it take me to get to school if he flies me there? These are some of the mind-boggling questions the author answers in this book. Its non-fiction and the questions are kind of crazy. They are asked to Ms. Mary Math and she uses math to help answer them in a simple way.
At first, I wasn’t sure about this book. I really like math, but the questions seemed too crazy for me. It was hard for me to wrap my head around the problems. I mean, these are not questions I would ask, but the answers did make me think and that’s the whole point of the book. It’s to have fun with funny problems and big numbers. The coolest part was that at the end of the book, it explained how to do the math!
This book reminded me of the Bedtime Math series which I also like. I would recommend the book, Mind-Boggling Numbers, for kids ages 7 and up. I give this book four stars. Cameron H., Age 7, New Mexico Mensa
