I think this volume's strong points are the fight scenes and the emotional depth of the characters, albeit not really the main characters, rather the supporting cast… which is kind of how it has always been with these mangas for me and in my experience that is not a good sign.
To be honest for me Maru and Kumiho are not really interesting characters. Perhaps it would be different if I would know more about them, but there has not been much since volume 1. Maru might as well have fallen from the sky for all I know and I have no idea why Kumiho even wants to become human.
With their antagonists I know at least why they do what they do, but for these two… why does Maru want to become stronger, why does Kumiho want to become human? There is not even a hint or anything, not a single shred of evidence.
But to be honest, the reason why those supporting characters do what they do can be pretty dumb. The whole reason as to why the demon in the mirror hated Kumiho for instance is pretty stupid and the reason the rose demon hated humans was kind of silly as well since it was such an easy to be avoidable mistake. In fact it seems like a forced attempt at comedy. Plus finally Kumiho suspected that someone else might have impersonated her before. But that comes pretty late. Also this here suggests that fox sword had owners before. But especially Maru doesn't seem to care. I know he is still in elementary school but still he should get his brain working.
So while it has good action scene and emotional depth, I think it lacks in intelligence and introspective.
