The Devil You Say

Rate this book
HELL TO PAY

The strange and secretive person who hired Aubrey Arbuthnot to bid for the mysterious Book of Shadows at a Sotheby's auction has greatly inconvenienced the unsuspecting London psychic. Since his unfortunate involvement in the netherworldly transaction, Aubrey has exchanged identities with his eccentric valet Hornchurch, witnessed the transformation of a lovely young lady into a desirable Ming vase...and lost his heart to a seductive satanist who craves the book for her High Priestess' ascension.

With a demon on his tail and two unlucky maidens en route to the sacrificial altar, Aubrey now realizes that he must destroy the dusty ancient tome in order to set things right--and to, perhaps, save the entire world from ultimate damnation.

Compared to its prequel, The Devil You Say suffers from unexpected biases and a substantially less likable Aubrey, yet still manages to retain some charm with an over-the-top 90s sort of humor. Far from perfect, it still should hold its own among fans of Strong Spirits.

Some quirky humor, but this is an American idea of British humor that doesn't quite work. The ending devolves into standard Christian devil nonsense suggestive of the supernatural novels of Dennis Wheatley
