What will happen if he discovers her secret?
Cynthia Woolf is the USA Today Bestselling and award-winning author of eighty-five works of romance fiction. Comprising sixty-six historical western romances, ten contemporary romance novels, two contemporary romance novellas, one historical western romance novella, and six sci-fi space opera romances, which she calls westerns in space. Along with these books, she has also published twelve boxed sets of her books and two short stories.
Cynthia loves writing and reading romance. Her first western romance, Tame A Wild Heart, was inspired by the story her mother told her of meeting Cynthia's father on a ranch in Creede, Colorado. Although Tame A Wild Heart takes place in Creede, that is the only similarity between the stories. Her father was a cowboy, not a bounty hunter, and her mother was a nursemaid (called a nanny now), not the ranch owner.
Cynthia credits her wonderfully supportive husband, Jim, and her great critique partners for saving her sanity and allowing her to explore her creativity.

This book was good, except for the hero John. He was a big asshat. I really liked him at first until he left his wife for 2 1/2 months for something that wasn't her fault. Then when he sees the light he goes to beg forgiveness and sees she is pregnant and gets mad that she didn't tell him she was pregnant and turns right around and goes to leave her again. So if I was Lena I would have told John's big dumb ass to keep walking I don't want a tantrum throwing husband that disappears every time he gets upset.
THIS IS MY CHOICE—I’M NOT HAVING ANYONE FOISTED ON ME
What a fun beginning to a new series. The story is full of mystery, suspense, a touch of danger, greed, and plenty of determination. For Helena “Lena” DuBois, she hasn’t had the easiest life, living away from her mother since she was six years old, never knowing her father, but she made the best of what she had. Now she is back in New Orleans at her mother’s home and will have shocking news---and that will set this tale into motion.
Robert Drummond decides he should make arrangements for his daughter and a suitable marriage—but his approach has her upset and in shock. So she decides to take her future into her own hands, locates a mail-order bride ad, purchases a train ticket to Golden, Colorado to meet Mrs. Maggie Black at Matchmakers & Co. Maggie has several gentlemen she has vetted and thinks she has the perfect one for Lena, a blacksmith named John Thorpe from Homestead Canyon, Wyoming.
“I also have a blacksmith in Homestead Canyon, in the Wyoming Territory, who I think would be perfect for you. His name is John Thorpe. He is looking for a woman of good moral character. I believe that is you. You’ve avoided your mother’s business and are refusing to be chattel for your father. I personally like that.”
The story will bring John and Lena together, and they will marry in Hanson, a two-day journey away from Homestead Canyon. While they seem to have great chemistry together, he holds back his love, claiming he can never love a woman—will that be enough for Lena? While he is ready to make her his wife in all ways, he respects her request to wait and get to know each other. They enjoy being together, talking, and he teaches her how to take care of the chickens, milk the cow, and she learns how to bake pies, biscuits, and cakes from other ladies. Their new life and marriage seem to suit each other well—and it won’t be long before they take the step to consummate their marriage.
Trouble is brewing back in New York, Robert is ill and dying, and upon his death, his stepson will receive shocking news; he isn’t the one to inherit the main part of the estate. Robert has been married for over six years and has legitimized his daughter, and they will be the ones to inherit the majority of his vast wealth.
The story will have the good, the bad, and the evil, with murder, attempted murder, deceit, lies, and secrets. When trouble comes to Homestead Canyon, it will drive a wedge between John and Lena, which will have them going their separate ways. Lena will run to the comfort of her mother, and John must decide what is essential in life. Has he judged Lena like he did his mother and other women? How long will it take him to realize that Lena is what he wants, but is it too late?
“John was blind. Blind to everything but his hatred.”
The story is full of human emotions, anger, angst and eventually will lead to revelations, seeking forgiveness, and making amends. But trouble is on their trail, and greed is driving the evil behind it. The story will take on life and death suspense.

This is the first book in a new series by Cynthia Woolf. “The Brides of Homestead Canyon takes place in a small town in California.
Helena “Lena” DuBois lives in New Orleans with her wealthy mother. She never knew her father. When she finally meets him, he claims that he has found a husband for her. Lena panics and runs away to become a mail order bride. She chooses John Thorpe, a blacksmith, from a photograph at the matchmaker’s place. She notices he has “kind” eyes and, therefore, decides he is the man she wants to marry. So, she travels by train to Homestead Canyon to be with John. In New Orleans, Lena lives in the lap of luxury in a huge mansion. She has every modern convenience available at that time. She, also, has servants who do everything for her.
On the other hand, John’s home is a small house with very few amenities. Lena now has to cook, clean, wash clothes and milk a cow. In spite of her background, Lena manages to learn to do all of these without a whine or a complaint.
In this story, Lena has several major problems. She has a stepbrother who wants to kill her and her mother so he can inherit the money from his dead father. Lena is also keeping a major secret from her new husband. She is terrified that he will leave her if he ever finds out.
Even though this book takes place in 1887, Lena is as strong and as independent as any modern woman. She leaves her home to move miles away to an unknown place to meet an unknown man. Once there, she willingly does all of the heavy chores that she had never done at home.
This is an exciting story as two strong and independent people learn to live together and, to eventually, love each other.
WOW! What would you do if you never knew your father and the one day a man shows up and says he’s your dad? Oh yeah then he says he has arranged a marriage for you? Oh, also he is rich! Runaway right? Lena DuBois does just that. She runs off to be a mail order bride. She can at least choose where to go to find a husband. After reading a few requests for a bride she is off to Morgan’s Crossing Montana to marry John Thorpe. John Thorpe is looking for a wife that has good moral character. Lena feels she will fit the bill as long as you don’t count what her mother does. Lena was raised in private schools all her life. Her Mom is a very well know madam in New Orleans. John and Lena grow close after they marry, but there are secrets between them that are about to come out. It is how they deal with this that will determine if they can keep their marriage together.

I love reading mail-order bride stories. I can't imagine the brave ladies who chose this life, perhaps from the want of an adventure or perhaps driven by desperation. Regardless of the reason, a woman traveling across the country to marry a man she has only met through letters is intriguing. Cynthia Woolfe has done a superb job of writing an interesting story with the typical mail-order elements - facing the unknown, getting to know one another, embarking on a new life together, sweet romance - but she has also included some other elements that certainly add to the story and make it more interesting, an estranged father, a mother who is a famous madam, a murderous stepbrother. All in all, I found this book to be a very interesting read.
Thanks so much. This is exactly the type of story I love. Great writing of scenes you can picture in your mind. I felt at times Lens was a bit to goody and he was quite a bit not so fast just like quite a few men I can mention, otherwise, so sitter and fast to anger in heat and so to removed their oversized feet from their mouth! Cynthia Woolf does a great job of stirring I can see where she got her following.. in your mind and dad follow from chapter to chapter
Thank you Cythia Woolf I am happy to add you to my "...just read another of this author 's books", list! Keep on a fitting and meanwhile I will start keeping up on your already published books. Thanks again.
Cynthia has given us another insight into the life of a mail-order bride. We have a glimpse into not only what life was like in Wyoming but in New Orléans and New York. Lena runs from a bad situation, finds and marries her man and then her past comes stalking with deadly intent. John has his own demons to fight and feels he could never love again. When Lena finds she can reconcile her past, she helps John with his while he protects her from danger. It’s fascinating to read about our past. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Helena, Lena, hasn't had any involvement with her mother's business and doesn't know whom her father is, until he appears and tells her he has a a husband picked out for her. She panics and rushes off to a mail order business. She gets matched with John Thorpe. Things get very complicated and her not stepbrother is trying to find her for nefarious purposes. Another great suspense from Cynthia. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Excellent romance of another series by Ms. Woolf. John wants a wife and uses a Mail-Order Bride source. Lena is fleeing the life she left not knowing the danger she put both herself and future husband. Turns out they both have secrets. There is angst, fear, caring and suspense. Another wonderful series to look forward to. I received a complementary copy of this book and chose to write a review. I look forward to reading future books by Ms. Woolf.
I loved this book so much. What would you do if you found out in the span of a day that you has a father and that he planned to arrange your marriage immediately? In Lena's case she takes her life into her hands and married a man of her choice. But when a tragedy he falls the family and there is money involved, she knows her life is in danger. I really enjoyed this book and I'm excited to read more.
Cynthia Wolf always delivers a fun, sweet romance. This one has everything; love, murder, money, anger, stupid male behavior and finally, love, marriage and a baby.
It's very difficult to imagine becoming a mail order bride, but sometimes it was a self affirming thing, the best choice available. Surely better than being fobbed off by your father on a man you've never met.
Meanwhile, this is a lovely way to spend a few hours.
Lena is not her mother or Thorpe' mom, but just herself. Good people don't always tell every thing about themselves. Most like to control their lives let alone their choices. Anger makes for poor actions. This story has a HEA ending and is about people. I have always been happy to read a Cynthia Woolf story any time I found one.
Quite an interesting story with intrigue and emotional parts. Her dad comes back into her life and right away decides she is going to marry his business partner. She runs and becomes a mail order bride. It is exciting, emotional, suspenseful and so much more. Really enjoyable story. I was given a review copy and voluntarily review it.
I always enjoy books by Cynthia Woolf and this book was no exception. Her characters are well developed from Helena/Lena to her mother, Mellisande, a well known New Orleans madame, to her father, Robert Drummond, a New York businessman, to Robert’s stepson, Eric Rappaport, to the hero, Thorpe. I feel the characters reacted to the various twists realistically. I enjoyed the book very much.
Lena runs away when her father arranges a marriage for her. She decides to become a mail order bride but, what will her husband do if he finds out about her mother? This is a wonderful story with endearing characters.
I enjoyed this Mail-Order Bride Romance. I received this for free and I voluntarily chose to review it. I've given it a 4.5* rating. This had a little bit of a lot of things in it, a little mystery, romance, a little suspense and a bit of action.
Lena met her father first time…saying he had picked out a husband for her… Lena took a train out West to talk to the matchmaker… Lena rather pick out her husband herself…. This was a GREAT BOOK…

This was a really sweet romance that you can't put down. I had to read it in one sitting. Lena DuBois did not know of her father but her mother was a madam at a really famous bordello. Lena didn't not actually grow up there as she was sent to school by her mother and also Lena became a teach at the school. But now Lena is back visiting her mom when a man comes forward to say that he is her father and he wants to marry her off to a gentleman in New York. This sends Lena in to a world win where she decides to up and leave the her mom and the area to get far away from them. In way of doing so, she has seen a news paper ad asking for women to marry and becomes brides of men out front. There Lena goes to the company with the need for wives and she is shown pictures of potential husbands. When she see John Thorpe pictures she decides on him and goes forth to Montana where he is located. She marries John and they are happy getting to know each other and seem to be doing well. But then a letter goes forward from a lawyer saying her father has died and left her his money and also that her step-brother is very upset by this and possible might her her as he did her father. Lena knows that if John finds out about her mother this could change his view on her as he wanted a highly moral women. This starts their really sweet and emotional love story. I was glad to have the chance to read and review this book.
Oh my I fell in love with Lena and John and I couldn’t put this book down. This book didn’t disappoint!
Lena has made the best of her life. Her mother is a well-known madam in New Orleans, however Lena has been shielded as best as she could. She was sent away to school and stayed on after she was done to teach. When she went to her mother’s home she ends up meeting her father whom she has never met before and he insists that she marry and he has picked out the groom. Lena doesn’t take either news well and decides to become a mail order bride. She wants to marry someone on her own terms not the ones that are set by someone she just met. What Lena doesn’t know is that her mother and father are married and have been for years.
John Thorpe is a good man and wants a woman of good moral fiber. He falls for his new wife, and they have a wonder marriage. However when her father passes away and she inherits a lot of money from him her past meets her present he cannot stand to be around her thinking she was just like her mother and she lied to him so he leaves her. Lena doesn’t know what to do and with a baby on the way (which John doesn’t know about) she heads back to her mother. And very nasty person from her past wants to see her and her entire family including her mother dead. What is she going to do? What will John do when he finds out she left her? Will John be able to overcome his issues and will Lena be able to forgive him?
I just love Ms. Woolf’s Western love stories. Lena is a beautiful, caring and giving woman. I cant imagine how hard it was for her to be the daughter of a famous madame. Her mother and father’s love story was different, but one that was still beautiful in its own way. Since Lena was working as a teacher, she had money saved up. So when a father she never knew introduced himself and said he had a man for her to marry, she left without telling anyone. Since she had read about mails order brides, she paid her own fair to Colorado to find a husband of her choosing. This is very different from most mails order brides. I liked Lena’s strength to take that long journey and meet a man she didn’t know to marry. She was very fortunate that John was a patient and kind man. I enjoyed watching them get to know each other and grow closer.
Unfortunately there is a unscrupulous and evil person that is greedy and wants lots of money that Lena has now. This brings a lot of trouble for Lena and John. I was disappointed in John some, but he finally came through for me. I loved this book and strongly encourage you to read it. I was given a copy of the book and voluntarily wrote a review.
This book will take you on quite the journey and if you are like me, you will love every minute of that journey. It starts with Lena, who is staying at her mother's for awhile, being confronted by the father she never knew and being told that he has a husband waiting for her. That night, Lena decides to take matters into her own hands and packs her trunks and buys train tickets to Colorado to meet with a Mail Order Bride agency. Lena then goes thru the process and finds John Thorpe, a blacksmith in a small town in Wyoming. After a quick marriage, Lena and John start becoming better acquainted with each other and grow more accustomed to being together. Meanwhile, Lena's father dies and leaves her a sizable fortune of which her father's step-son wants all of it. While John and Lena are still learning to trust each other, the step-son shows up and starts causing all kinds of trouble. Believe me, he's a little twerp that you just want to squash. Keep reading to see if John and Lena can hold onto their marriage, survive the troublemakers and find their HEA.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thorpe's Mail-Order Bride by Cynthia Woolf's is book 1 of The Brides of Homestead Canyon. It is the story of Helena DuBois. Helena DuBois finds the man who claims to be her father and he wants to sell her off in an arranged marriage to one of his business partners. she decides to choose her own groom and becomes a mail-order bride. She answers and becomes the mail order bride for John Thorpe, a blacksmith. She goes to Wyoming but then her father dies and she inherits a fortune and a stepbrother who wants her dead. Her secrets will come out and how will if affect her marriage and her life plus will her brother get his wish makes the story fast paced and interesting. t is the story of It is an interesting story and time just flies by when you read it. It is a wonderful start to a new series. I enjoy Cynthia Woolf's stories and this one does not disappoint. I can not wait for the next book in the series.
I was given a copy of this book, and this is my honest review.
I find this story charming. The characters are likable, with the exception of Eric, (the villain). He is truly vile.
The plot follows a familiar format, with a twist. The world-building is less effective than I had hoped. It does not reach the caliber of Hunter Bride, another of Woolf’s mail order bride books.
I find the beginning of the book rushed, with too little backstory. That, coupled with a back and forth timeline, really hurts the story’s flow. Also, despite the secret kept by Lena, (Thorpe’s bride), I have trouble finding the plausibility of a comparison between her and his mother. In addition, the grammar and punctuation are pretty bad.
This book has the potential to be really good. It needs further editing and more proofing. 3 stars
I loved this book so much I had to read it in one sitting, I couldn't put it down. Lena DuBois was raised in a boarding school since she was six years old. She is the daughter of a high class madam, who didn't want her around the business. Lena's non-existent, high class, well dressed father shows up in her life; and informs her that he has prearranged her marriage to a business partner of his. This upset Lena, she decides that if he can arrange a marriage so can she. She goes to a marriage broker and is fixed up with John Thorpe in Montana. But as things happen, everyone has secrets, and these secrets should have been disclosed before the marriage. Will their love be strong enough to survive this, or be strong enough to survive Victor and his vengeance to acquire her inheritance. I loved the book, characters, I was sorry to see it end.
This was another great read by Cynthia Woolf! Lena DuBois is a sheltered young woman, her mother a popular madam has sent her away at boarding school. Imagine her shocked surprise when she finds out she’s to be married shock number 1, shock number 2 she has a father! What’s a girl to do? Become a mail-order bride of course! If she’s to marry she’ll do the husband picking! John Thorpe wants a wife to be a paragon of virtue and morals, all the credentials his mother never had, so when he meets Lena he’s smitten and they marry. Things go well and both are happy getting to know each other, until a letter upends her life and John treats her unforgivably. It takes a long while for John to realize that the sins of the parents don’t reflect the children. Can Lena ever forgive his cruel behaviour? As always this was superbly written! I highly recommend this, all opinions are my own.

This was the best book by this author that I have read. Lena flees New Orleans after learning that her father has chosen someone for her to wed. And said father, has just introduced himself to Lena (who is now 23). Could this day get much worse for this sweet girl? An absolutely delightful story about a sweet couple, Lena and John, who meet through a mail order bride service in Colorado. All of the characters are unique and brought to life so well. The story has a lot of layers and when you think you have it figured out, something happens. I would really recommend this clean, sweet romance. I received an ARC copy of the book. This is my voluntary, honest and completely personal review. VICKI FROM WYOMING
