This much-touted novel by T.D. Ramakrishnan, author of the acclaimed Francis Ittykora, is a bold attempt to analyse the civil war between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) as a history of atrocities on the innocent, especially women, with the aid of myth and ancient history suitably embellished with large doses of fiction. It follows a film-making crew in post-war Lanka, ostensibly there to make a film on Rajani Thiranagama, allegedly shot dead by the Tamil Tigers because she criticised their patriarchal, fascist ways. But Peter Jeevanandam, the Indian scriptwriter, has another motive: to locate Sugandhi, former Tiger and his erstwhile lover during his previous stint in the country who has since then disappeared.

As they travel across the country, Peter learns that Sugandhi has taken on the name of Andal Devanayaki, a legendary figure in the medieval history of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Lanka. Originally the concubine of the king of Kanthallur, a small kingdom in present day Kerala in South India, she subsequently becomes the queen of Raja Raja, the famous Chola king; the lover of Rajendra Chola, his son; and becomes incidental in the downfall of King Mahinda of Anuradhapura in Lanka. She is a true femme fatale, and uses all the gifts at her disposal to twist men around her little finger. In the end, however, having attained moksha through tantric sex and liberated of base emotions and her human body, she flies away into the realm of myth.

This story, told in blogs by the enigmatic Meenakshi Rajaratthinam, is interspersed with the history of Lanka's civil war and its aftermath. Ultimately, the mysteries are revealed and Sugandhi really becomes a modern Devanayaki of sorts. To tell more would be a spoiler.

After reading Francis Itticora, I was in two minds as to whether I should label Ramakrishnan as Kerala's Michael Crichton or Dan Brown. After this novel, I think Dan Brown is more appropriate.

Both the novels follow the same formula. A modern day story-line is superimposed upon a historical one, one which is composed in equal parts of myth, legend, history and fiction: there is a thriller-like central thread, but with enough references to provide a scholarly veneer. The tone is that of a historical dissertation or a journalistic study rather than that of a novel, and with the subject matter chosen, it is strangely appropriate. Ramakrishnan, one must admit, is a very skilled writer and the narrative never flags.

But ultimately, I found the novel a tad disappointing due to two reasons.

One: The story does not conclude properly. In such an ambitious project, one does not expect a "neat" conclusion with all loose ends tied up, of course - but to me, the novel seemed to end in a mess, as though the author did not know how to wind it up properly. Also, the POV kept on shifting from first to third person and vice versa quite abruptly in the last chapter.

Two: The author's penchant for abduction, rape and torture. This was evident in Francis Itticora, and is even more prominent in this novel. Sex is superimposed with mutilation in multiple places. While I agree that atrocities against women are a serious concern in any war, as Susan Brownmiller says, here they seemed to be depicted from an exclusively masculine standpoint. One can hardly blame if the reader sees a male gaze secretly revelling in the subjugation and debasement of women. Let me add that I do not for one moment think that this is Ramakrishnan's intention - but IMO, it could be interpreted that way.

'സുഗന്ധി എന്ന ആണ്ടാള്‍ ദേവനായകി'- ചരിത്രവും വര്‍ത്തമാനവും നിലനില്‍ക്കുന്ന മിത്തുകളോടു ചേര്‍ത്തുവയ്ക്കാനുള്ള ശ്രമം ഉണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ടിതില്‍. പക്ഷേ ആ ഉദ്യമത്തില്‍ വിജയിച്ചുവെന്നു പറയാനാകില്ല. സഹസ്രാബ്ദം മുമ്പുള്ള ദേവനായകിയും അവളുടെ ഐതിഹ്യവും മനോഹരമായി പ്രതിപാദിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. മിത്തിക്കല്‍ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങള്‍ അതിമാനുഷരാകുന്നതില്‍ തെറ്റില്ല, പക്ഷേ അവരുടെ സാമൂഹ്യചുറ്റുപാടു ചരിത്രത്തോടു നീതിപുലര്‍ത്തിയില്ലെങ്കില്‍ അത് കല്ലുകടിയാവുകതന്നെ ചെയ്യും. സുഗന്ധിയെന്ന വര്‍ത്തമാനത്തിലെ ദേവനായകിയെ ഐതിഹ്യത്തിലെ ദേവനായകിയോട് മുഴച്ചിരിക്കാതെ കൂട്ടിയിണക്കാന്‍ സാധിച്ചിട്ടുമില്ല. രതി ആനന്ദത്തിന്റേയും ക്രൂരമായ ബലാത്സംഗത്തിന്റേയും രൂപത്തില്‍ നോവലില്‍ പലകുറി കടന്നുവരുന്നുണ്ട്. ശിങ്കളപ്പട്ടാളത്തിന്റേയും ഇയക്കത്തിന്റേയും ക്രൂരമായ പീഡനകേന്ദ്രങ്ങളും വിവരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട്. കാട്ടുനീതി നടപ്പാക്കുന്നതില്‍ ഒരു മടിയും കാണിക്കാത്ത കൂട്ടരായിരുന്നു ഇരുവരും. വംശീയഭിന്നതയെന്ന ഒറ്റക്കാരണമാണോ ഈ ക്രൂരതകള്‍ക്കൊക്കെയുള്ള പ്രത്യയശാസ്ത്രപരമായ ന്യായവാദമെന്ന സംശയം ഒടുക്കം മനസ്സില്‍ അവശേഷിക്കുന്നു.

I randomly picked up this book expecting some research and myth, during a 12 hour flight. And I was not regretted! It is indeed an awesome book. But like his other books, it lacks some polishing. But still it is a nice thriller, based on the torture and sufferings the srilankan Tamil people.

A set of people who were between two fascist groups, and the bigger or majority fascist group wins and tortured the other one. And he mix this story with an awesome mythological story of Aandaal Devanayaki. Which was too good. Anyway was a great read and i would suggest this for all.

The novel revolves around post-VP period of Srilanka, which witnessed a genocide unequal in world history. As in any war or post-war mass extinction, those who suffer the most will be the women and children. Men are often cruel but cowards. The work is dedicated to Dr. Rajani Thiranagama, and she is a central figure in the it. Sugandhi, Devanayaki (the myth and real women), Poomani Selvanayakam, Juliet, Roopavathi, Gayathri Perera, these are all real and powerful women, who even in the midst of crisis show extreme self-will and courage, whereas the men the King Mahinda, Mahendravarma, Sinham, VP, and the military officers, the President Mahinda Rajapakse, all are cruel and cowards, dangerously alike in their cruelty. Peter Jinvanandam became a classic example at the end, running for his life when all other women are ready to sacrifice their lives.

രജനി തിരണഗാമ എന്ന മനുഷ്യാവകാശ പ്രവർത്തകയുടെ ജീവിതത്തെ ആസ്പദമാക്കി ചിത്രീകരിക്കുന്ന ഹോളിവുഡ് ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ സ്ക്രിപ്റ്റ് റൈറ്റർ ആയ പീറ്ററുടെ കാഴ്ചപ്പാടിലൂടെയാണ് കഥ പ്രധാനമായും മുന്നോട്ട് പോകുന്നത്. ഒറ്റവാക്കിൽ അതിമനോഹരം എന്ന് പറയാവുന്ന നോവൽ വായനക്കാരെ തീർത്തും അപരിചിതമായ പല മാനങ്ങളിലൂടെയും തലങ്ങളിലൂടെയും സഞ്ചരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ദേവനായകി എന്ന മിത്തിനെയും, ആനുകാലിക സംഭവങ്ങളെയും, ചരിത്രത്തെയും ഒരുപോലെ ചേർത്ത ഇഴനെയ്തെടുത്ത ഈ കൃതി ഒരു 'page turner' തന്നെയാണ്.

നോവലിന്റെ തുടക്കത്തിൽ ദേവനായകി എന്ന കഥാപാത്രം തീരെ ദുർബലമല്ലേ എന്ന് തോന്നിയെങ്കിലും പിന്നീടങ്ങോട്ട് ആ കഥാപാത്രത്തിന്റെ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ characterisation ന്റെ ശക്തി കൂടി വരുന്നതായും, അവസാനം മിത്തിനും യാഥാർഥ്യത്തിനുമിടയിൽ സ്ത്രീ ശക്തിയുടെ പ്രതിരൂപമായി, നിസ്സാഹായതയ്ക്കിടയിൽപോലും പൊരുതുന്ന ശക്തിയായി, ദേവനായകി പുനർജനിച്ചുകൊണ്ടേയിരുന്നു.

ഡിവൈൻ പേർളിലെ പീഡനമുറകളും സിംഹം എന്ന പട്ടാള മേധാവിയുടെ ക്രൂരതകളും മറ്റു പല സംഭവങ്ങളും ഞെട്ടിപ്പിക്കുന്ന വ്യത്യസ്തമായ വായനാനുഭവങ്ങളാണ്. അടിച്ചമർത്തപ്പെട്ട ഒരു സമൂഹം ഫാസിസ്റ്റു ശക്തികൾക്കെതിരായി അക്ഷീണം നടത്തുന്ന പോരാട്ടങ്ങളെ ദേവനായകിയുടെ കഥയുടെ അകമ്പടിയോടെ ഭംഗിയായി ചിത്രീകരിക്കാൻ കഥാകാരന് കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്. വിട്ടുപോയ കണ്ണികൾ ഉദ്ദ്വേഗജനകമായ പ്ലോട്ടുകളിലൂടെ പൂരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന കഥാഖ്യാന ശൈലി ഈ പുസ്തകത്തെ വളരെ engaging ആക്കുന്നു. എല്ലാറ്റിലുമുപരി ഭംഗിയായ ഒരു surrealism ത്തിലൂടെ നോവൽ അവസാനിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു.
ഒന്ന് രണ്ടു കാര്യങ്ങൾ കൂടി ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ ഈ വായന കുറച്ചുകൂടി സുഖകരമാകും എന്ന് കരുതുന്നു:
1. വളരെ ദൈർഘ്യമുള്ള മോണോലോഗുകളും ഒരുപാട് വിവരങ്ങൾ തിങ്ങിനിറഞ്ഞ ചില ഭാഗങ്ങളും പലയിടങ്ങളിലും വായനാസുഖം കുറക്കുന്നു
2. രതിയുടെയും ലൈംഗീകതയുടെയും അതിപ്രസരം: ഇത് ഒന്നുകിൽ വായനക്കാരെ ആകർഷിക്കാനുള്ള ഒരു കൂട്ടിന്റെ/ചേരുവയുടെ ഭാഗമാകാം, അല്ലെങ്കിൽ എഴുത്തുകാരന്റെ തനതായ, ഒഴിച്ചുകൂടാനാവാത്ത ശൈലിയാവാം. എന്തുതന്നെ ആയാലും പല ഭാഗങ്ങളിലും ഇത് അനാവശ്യമെന്നോ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഒരു പൈങ്കിളി ടച്ച് ഉള്ളതായ��� തോന്നി. കഥയുടെ ഗതി നിയന്ത്രിക്കുന്നതിനായി മാത്രം ആ വിവരണങ്ങൾ ഒതുക്കിയിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ പോലും വായനക്കാരെ പിടിച്ചിരുത്താനുള്ള ചേരുവകളെല്ലാം ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ ഉണ്ടാകുമായിരുന്നു

ആകെമൊത്തം വളരെ bold ആയ, വായനക്കാരെ പിടിച്ചിരുത്തുന്ന, വ്യത്യസ്തമായ ഒരു വായനഭവമാണ് സുഗന്ധി എന്ന ആണ്ടാൾ ദേവനായകി.

സാധാരണ ചട്ടക്കൂടുകൾക്കതീതമായി എഴുതുവാനും വ്യത്യസ്തമായ ശൈലികളും പ്രമേയങ്ങളും കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യുവാനും ഈ കൃതി വളർന്നുവരുന്ന എല്ലാ എഴുത്തുകാർക്കും ഒരു പ്രചോദനമായിരിക്കും എന്ന് നിസ്സംശയം പറയാം

ക്രൂരസുന്ദരം എന്നൊരു പദം ഉണ്ടോ എന്നറിയില്ല, ഉണ്ടെങ്കിൽ "സുഗന്ധി എന്ന ആണ്ടാൾ ദേവനായകി"യെ ആ പദം ഉപയോഗിച്ച് വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കാം. മനുഷ്യാവകാശങ്ങൾ ഒന്നൊന്നായി ധ്വംസിക്കപ്പെട്ട ശ്രീലങ്കയിലെ യാഥാർത്ഥ്യങ്ങളെ കാണിച്ചതിനാൽ ക്രൂരം എന്നും ചരിത്രവും മിത്തും കലർന്ന മനോഹരമായ എഴുത്തിനെ സുന്ദരം എന്നും മാത്രമേ വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കാൻ കഴിയൂ. ഈ നോവലാണ് എന്നെ വയലാർ അവാർഡ് ലഭിച്ച പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ തിരഞ്ഞുപിടിച്ച് വായിക്കാൻ പ്രേരിപ്പിച്ചത്.


ഇരുപത്തൊന്നാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൻ്റെ തുടക്കത്തിലെ  അസ്വസ്ഥമായ ശ്രീലങ്കയിലാണ് നോവൽ ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത്. ആക്ടിവിസ്റ്റ് രജനി തിരണഗമയെക്കുറിച്ച് ഒരു ഡോക്യുമെന്ററി നിർമ്മിക്കാൻ ശ്രീലങ്കയിൽ എത്തിയ ഒരു  ചലച്ചിത്ര സംഘം. അവരെ സുഗന്ധിയായി അവതരിച്ച ദേവനായകി വേട്ടയാടുന്നതാണ് പിന്നീടുള്ള താളുകളിൽ കാണുന്നത്. പല്ലവ-ചോള കൊട്ടാരങ്ങളിൽ നൃത്തം ചെയ്തും കാവ്യം ചൊല്ലി പുരുഷകേസരികളെ ഭയപ്പെടുത്തിയതുമായ സുന്ദരിയായിരുന്നു ദേവനായകി. കൂടുതൽ സ്വതന്ത്രയാവൻ അവൾ എപ്പോളും ആഗ്രഹിച്ചു. മണ്ണിന് വേണ്ടി വന്നവർ അവളെ കൂട്ടബലാത്സംഗവും നാടുകടത്തലും കൊണ്ട് നശിപ്പിച്ചു. അവൾ ശാപമായി മാറി. പതിനാലു നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകൾക്കപ്പുറം സുഗന്ധിയായി അവൾ തിരിച്ചെത്തി ജ്വലിക്കുന്നു, ഇപ്പോഴും പ്രതികാരം ചെയ്യുന്നു. 


സുഗന്ധി തന്നെയാണ് പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ കാതൽ. കുട്ടിയായിരിക്കെ റിക്രൂട്ട് ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടുകയും, കൊല ചെയ്യുവാൻ അടക്കം പരിശീലിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടുകയും ആത്മഹത്യാ ദൗത്യങ്ങൾക്ക് അയക്കപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്ത അവൾ പിന്നീട് കസ്റ്റഡിയിൽ കൂട്ടബലാത്സംഗം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടുന്നുണ്ട്.  ചുരുക്കത്തിൽ, സുഗന്ധി എൽ.ടി.ടി.ഇ. സൃഷ്ടിച്ച ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച ആയുധവും, അതേ സംഘടന തന്നെ നശിപ്പിച്ച ഇരയും, അവസാനം അതിനെയെല്ലാം മറികടന്ന് നിൽക്കുന്ന ശാപവുമാണ്.


വായനയുടെ അവസാനം കഥാകാരൻ നമുക്ക് ആശ്വാസമോ സന്തുലിതമായ ഒരു കാഴ്ചപ്പാടോ നൽകുന്നില്ല. അവസാന താളും വായിച്ച് പുസ്തകം അടച്ചശേഷമുള്ള ഒരു ദീർഘ നിശ്വാസത്തിനുശേഷം വളരെക്കാലം നമ്മളെ വേട്ടയാടുന്ന ഒരു പുസ്തകമാണിത്.

അത്യാവശ്യം നന്നായി റിസർച്ച് ചെയ്തെഴുതിയ നോവലാണ് ടി ഡി രാമകൃഷ്ണന്റെ സുഗന്ധി എന്ന ആണ്ടാൾ ദേവനായകി. പക്ഷെ മിത്തും പ്ലോട്ടും അത്രകണ്ട് യോജിപ്പിക്കാനായില്ല എന്നിടത്താണ് നോവലിന്റെ പരാജയം. മിത്ത് വരുന്ന ഭാഗങ്ങൾ വായിക്കുമ്പോൾ നിലം പൂത്തു മലർന്ന നാൾ എന്ന കൃതി ഓർത്തുപോയി. അതിലുള്ള ഭാഷാഭംഗി ഇവിടെയില്ല.

Very shallow writing. The writer is so fixated in women's body, objectification, superficial understanding of violence and sexuality, he doesn't do justice to any of the plots in the book.

2.5 rounded up. I picked up this novel on a recommendation from a friend in Southern India and am glad I did, but wished I would have liked it more. Sugandhi Alias Andal Devanayaki is not an easy novel. The English translation is lacking a bit of polish and the story is a bit difficult to follow for someone not already familiar with Sri Lanka’s history. This extends not only to the recent civil war but also to distant history and mythology of the nation. I would strongly encourage anyone thinking of reading this to take the time to do a bit of research beforehand so that you are able to appreciate it more.

Story-weaving. The author wove many different stories into one. Although it takes some time for them to really come together and for the reader to appreciate it, it is quite impressive.

Sugandhi/present story thread. I found the present story thread thrilling in comparison to the past. Everything related to the war in Sri Lanka and the search for Sugandhi held my interest.

Dialogue. The dialogue feels very wooden throughout the novel.

Violence against women. There is no shortage of breast-cutting, rape, chastity belts, verbal abuse, etc etc. I was also not impressed with the way the main character, Peter, spoke to and thought about women. There was way too much emphasis on women’s beauty and they were often treated like objects. It’s like the author didn’t realize that these are 2 sides of the same coin. I feel he failed to acknowledge this behavior as also being problematic. While a certain amount of violence towards women is necessary to tell the story and I will not argue with that, it was excessive and I sometimes felt it did nothing to advance the narrative. There were even spiked rape pens and rape robots in the book which felt dialed-in and wholly unnecessary. It almost felt like the lack of a resolution or justification for including this reflects the author’s own attitude towards women.

Devanayaki/past story thread. I just had no way to understand everything going on in the past story thread, not having a lot of background on the country’s history. This was the weakest point of the novel for me, as I breezed through the modern-day portions, but got stuck in the past portions.

Characters. This is not really a character-driven story (other than Devanayaki/Sugandhi, of course). The present day characters are really just a vehicle for the story about Devanayaki/Sugandhi to develop.

The legend of Aandaal Devanayaki was the most interesting part in this. Even though the novel talks a lot about women's movements to resist fascism and war in a male dominant society, the male gaze behind was very evident in the writing.

TD Ramakrishnan has done it again. Sugandhi Enna Andal Devanayaki is a well-built and brave piece of literature. The marvelous amount of research which the author has done for the book is similar to those which we find in world literature and is well reflected in the book. The novel is a perfect blend of fiction and facts thus making a perfect example of ‘FACTION’. The author has mixed memory, mythology and history perfectly where the reader will not be able to distinguish.

The story revolves on the narrator Peter, but speaks about a bunch of very strong women who has survived the socio – political cruelties. The analogy of these characters to myth lifts the novel from the concept of time frame and gives a feeling of eternity. The novel extents it’s dimension from era of Pandyas and Cholas to centuries old ethnical Sinhalese –Tamil war and the present socio-political scenarios in Srilanka. The author has done justice to each and every character, where the readers are able to feel the multidimensional emotions which the characters are actually going through. As the myth of Andal Devanayaki blends with the political assassination of Human Right Activist Rajani Thiranagama and the disappearance of fictional character Sugandi, the author tries to relate the sufferings of the women during war across time and status quo. The mythical transformation of the characters in the novel gives a magical feeling and raises the reader to a plane where the reality, fiction and mythology become indistinguishable.

The novel portrays the dramatic and cruel life faced by the women during war across centuries. The story doesn’t end there, the author also succeeded in revealing the strength of the women to rise as a phoenix bird even after her wings were brutally cut off and dreams were shattered. The novel amplifies its significance in the current situation, when the war and the crime against women and children are in the raise. The book makes you believe that the world needs Devanayaki, Rajani, Sugandhi and lot many more to bring an end to the dystopia.

I enjoyed the read and will be less to say that the recognitions which this book has been honored with are well deserved.

ആഭ്യന്തര യുദ്ധത്തിനു ശേഷമുള്ള ശ്രീലങ്കയുടെ കഥ പറയുന്ന നോവലാണിത് എന്ന് വേണമെങ്കിലും ഇതിനെ പറയാം. മനുഷ്യാവകാശങ്ങൾ ഒന്നൊന്നായി നിഷേധിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ശ്രീലങ്കയിലെ സമകാലിക സാമൂഹിക വ്യവസ്ഥിതിയുടെ നേർചിത്രം കൂടെ ഇതിലടങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്നു.

ചോള,ചേര,സിംഹള മിത്തുകൾ വർത്തമാന കാലഘട്ടത്തോട് കൂട്ടിക്കലർത്തി എഴുതിയ ഒരു നോവലാണ് സുഗന്ധി എന്ന ആണ്ടാൾ ദേവനായകി. ഒരേ സമയം സ്ത്രീപക്ഷവും സ്ത്രീ വിരുദ്ധവുമായ കാര്യങ്ങൾ പ��യുന്ന നോവൽ. സിംഹള മണ്ണിലെ തമിഴരുടെ ആധിപത്യവും പിന്നീട് വർത്തമാന കാലഘട്ടത്തോടടുക്കുമ്പോൾ സിംഹളരാൽ അമർച്ച ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ട തമിഴ് വംശജരുടെ വിമോചനപ്പോരാട്ടങ്ങളും ഇതിൽ കാണാം.

തമിഴ് മക്കൾക്കായി രൂപംകൊണ്ട LTT തുടങ്ങിയ വിമോചന പ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങൾ തങ്ങളുടെ പ്രവർത്തനമേഖല മറന്ന് ഫാസിസത്തിന്റെ വഴിയിലേക്ക് തിരിയുകയും അവരെ വിമർശിക്കുന്ന എല്ലാവരെയും ഇല്ലായ്മ ചെയ്യുന്നത് നമുക്കിവിടെ കാണാം. ജനാധിപത്യപ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങളായി രൂപംകൊള്ളുന്ന സംഘടനകൾ എത്ര പെട്ടെന്നാണ് സ്വാർത്ഥതാല്പര്യ പ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങളായി മാറുന്നതെന്ന വസ്തുത ഞെട്ടിക്കുന്നതാണ്.

രജനി തിരണഗാമ എന്ന പെൺസിംഹത്തെപ്പോലെ മനുഷ്യാവകാശങ്ങൾ ഒന്നൊന്നായി നിഷേധിക്കപ്പെട്ട് ന്യൂനപക്ഷങ്ങൾക്കായി വളരെ ശക്തമായി പ്രതികരിച്ചു. കൂടെ നിന്നവർ തന്നെ ഒറ്റുകൊടുത്ത് അതിക്രൂരമായി പീഡിപ്പിച്ചു കൊലചെയ്യപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്ത സ്ത്രീകളെ ഇവിടെ കാണാം. മുൻധാരണകൾ ഒന്നുമില്ലാതെ വായിച്ച് അറിയേണ്ട ഒന്ന് തന്നെയാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം.

Sugandhi is well written, in the usual TD Ramakrishnan crafting style of blending thriller-myth and contemporary set-tale. Having read his Francis Ittikkora and now Sugandhi, I observe that TD Ramakrishnan 's stories can never be told without having these women of utmost perfect beauty as central characters. In a way I found his literary obsession with this kind of beautiful women, brimming lust etc written with exquisite descriptions, really boring and repetitive. The plots always revolve around this Savarna female bodies and hetero-sexuality. But otherwise, with the well integrated mythological and historical backdrop of the now Sri Lanka, then Chola-Chera-Lanka regions, with explicated accounts of the Lankan War, the herstories of torture and violence women have to face during the wars, how both the state led and resistance groups led violences equally endanger their existence, the novel is enthusing and a good read.

Moreover, the novel, is an intercultural experiment, incorporating the nuances of multiple languages and cultures spanning across different temporal and geographical spaces.

"ഫാസിസവും ഏകാധിപത്യവും ഏറ്റവും പ്രതികൂലമായി ബാധിക്കുക സ്ത്രീകളെയാണ്. ഏകാധിപതിയുടെ സൗന്ദര്യബോധത്തെക്കാൾ അധികാര ബോധമാണ് ഇവിടെ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നത്. എല്ലാ സുന്ദരിമാരും തനിക്കു കീഴ്പ്പെടേണ്ടവരാണ് എന്നൊരു ചിന്ത അതിൽ നിന്നുണ്ടാകുന്നു"( page no:238)

ഈ വരികളാണ് നോവലിൻ്റെ കാതൽ എന്ന് പറയാം.

ആണ്ടാൾ ദേവനായകിയെന്ന മിത്തും ശ്രീലങ്കയുടെ വർത്തമാനകാലരാഷ്ട്രീയവും കോർത്തിണക്കിയെടുത്തിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു നോവൽ. കഥകളും ഉപകഥകളുമൊക്കെയുള്ള ദേവനായകിയുടെ മിത്ത് ഭംഗിയായി അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ചരിത്രപരവും ഭൂമിശാസ്ത്രപരവുമായ വസ്തുതകളെ യോജിപ്പിച്ച് ചേർത്തപ്പോൾ ആണ്ടാൾ ദേവനായകിയുടെ മായിക തീവ്രത ഏറുന്നു. 1989 ൽ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ട ശ്രീലങ്കൻ മനുഷ്യാവകാശ പ്രവർത്തക രജനി തിരണഗാമയെ ചുറ്റിപ്പറ്റിയാണ് നോവലിൻ്റെ വർത്തമാനകാലം.ശ്രീലങ്കൻ രാഷ്ട്രീയ യാഥാർത്ഥ്യങ്ങളെപ്പറ്റി, ഭരണകൂട ഭീകരതയെപ്പറ്റി, മനുഷ്യാവകാശ ധ്വംസനങ്ങളെപ്പറ്റി, ജനാധിപത്യവിരുദ്ധവും ഏകാധിപത്യപരവുമായിത്തീർന്ന തമിഴ് വിമോചന പ്രസ്ഥാനത്തെപ്പറ്റി ഒക്കെ നോവൽ സംസാരിക്കുന്നു.

This book is highly readable. the author easily takes us from reality to fantacy, from present to the past.. this book gives a reasonable insight to the pathetic conditions of women who suffered in the long term of violence in Sri Lanka. altogether a good book even though i personally disliked some of the parts

ശ്രീലങ്കയുടെ രാഷ്ട്രീയ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിൽ ഭാവനയും ചരിത്രവും പുരാണവും ഒരുപോലെ ചേർത്തു വച്ചു എഴുതിയിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു അസാമാന്യ നോവൽ തന്നെയാണ് "സുഗന്ധി എന്ന ആണ്ടാൾ ദേവനായകി". യാഥാർത്ഥ്യത്തെയും സങ്കല്പങ്ങളെയും ഒരു വായനക്കാരന് ഒട്ടും മുഷിപ്പ് തോന്നാത്ത രീതിയിൽ എഴുതുവാൻ ടി.ഡി യ്ക്ക് കഴിയുന്നുണ്ട്.
1956ൽ ഇന്ത്യയിൽ ഭാഷയുടെ അടിസ്ഥാനത്തിൽ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങൾ രൂപീകരിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. ഇതേ സമയം ശ്രീലങ്കൻ പാർലമെന്റ് സിംഹള ഭാഷയെ രാഷ്ട്രഭാഷ ആയി പ്രഖ്യാപിക്കുന്ന നിയമം കൊണ്ട് വരുവാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചു. എന്നാൽ ശ്രീലങ്കയിലെ ന്യൂനപക്ഷമായ തമിഴർ ഇതിനെ ശക്തമായി എതിർത്തു രംഗത്തു വന്നു. കലാപങ്ങൾക്ക് അങ്ങനെയാണ് തുടക്കം കുറിക്കുന്നത്.
1972ൽ എല്ലാ വിധ എതിർപ്പുകളെയും അവഗണിച്ചു സിംഹള എന്നത് രാഷ്ട്രഭാഷയും ബുദ്ധിസം ശ്രീലങ്കയുടെ മതം ആവുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഭൂരിഭാഗം തമിഴർ ഹിന്ദുക്കളും ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികളുമായിരുന്നു.
എല്ലാവിധത്തിലും ഭാഷാപരമായ മതപരമായ അവഗണനയുടെ മറുപടി ആയി പല പല പാരാമിലിട്ടറി ഗ്രൂപ്പുകൾ രൂപപ്പെട്ടു. അവയിൽ പ്രധാനിയായിരുന്നു LTTE അഥവാ ലിബറേഷൻ ടൈഗേഴ്‌സ് ഓഫ് തമിഴ് ഇളം. ശ്രീലങ്കയിലേക്ക് ഈ സംഘടനയെ വക വരുത്തുവാൻ പട്ടാളത്തെ അയച്ചതിനാണല്ലോ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി ആയിരുന്ന രാജീവ് ഗാന്ധിയുടെ ജീവൻ 1991 മെയ് 21ന് LTTE അംഗമായ ഒരു ചാവേർ കൊലയാളി കാർന്നെടുത്തത്.
തുടക്കത്തിൽ ശ്രീലങ്കൻ ആർമി, 1981ൽ ജാഫ്‌നയിലെ ഗ്രേറ്റ് തമിഴ് ലൈബ്രറി തീ വച്ച് നശിപ്പിച്ചതും സിംഹള നേതാക്കന്മാർ 1983ൽ തമിഴ് വിരുദ്ധ പരിപാടികൾ ആസൂത്രണം ചെയ്തതും കാര്യങ്ങൾ വഷളാക്കിയതേ ഉള്ളൂ.. ഭരണാധികാരികളുടെ ക്രൂരതയും, അതിന്റെ അവിഹിത ഫലമായി രൂപം കൊണ്ട തമിഴ് ഇളവും സാധാരണ മനുഷ്യാവകാശ പ്രവർത്തകർക്കും സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യ മോഹികൾക്കും നരകം സമ്മാനിച്ചു എന്ന് വേണം പറയാൻ.
ഈ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിൽ എഴുതിയ നോവൽ നമ്മളെ ചരിത്രത്തിലേക്കും അവകാശ നിഷേധങ്ങളുടെ നേർക്കാഴ്ചകളിലേക്കും കൂട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടു പോവുകയാണ്. ഈ ഒരു പശ്ചാത്തലത്തെ സഹസ്രാബ്ദം മുൻപ് ജീവിച്ചിരുന്നു എന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ദേവനായകിയുടെ കഥയുമായി വളരെ സമർത്ഥമായി കോർത്തിണക്കി എഴുത്തുകാരൻ നമ്മുടെ മുൻപിലേക്ക് എത്തിക്കുന്നു.
ഏതൊരു യുദ്ധത്തിന്റെയും പ്രധാന ഇരകൾ എങ്ങനെയാണ് സ്ത്രീകളാകുന്നത് എന്നും അദ്ദേഹം വരച്ചു കാണിക്കുന്നു. ശ്രീലങ്കയുടെ എന്നല്ല, ഇന്ത്യൻ ചരിത്രത്തിലും സ്ത്രീ പുരുഷ തുല്യതയെ പരിഹാസ ഭാവത്തോടെ കണ്ടിരുന്നതിനു ഒരുപാട് ഉദാഹരണങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടല്ലോ.. ഇന്നും അതിനു വലിയ മാറ്റം വന്നിട്ടില്ല എന്നെനിക്കു തോന്നുന്നു. പറഞ്ഞാൽ കേൾക്കുന്ന ഒരു പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി ആയിരിക്കും, സ്ത്രീയല്ലേ എന്ന് കരുതി ഇന്ദിരാഗ��ന്ധിയെ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി ആക്കിയതും, ഒരു സ്ത്രീയെയും അവളുടെ കഴിവിനെയും വില കുറച്ചു കണ്ട കോൺഗ്രസ്സിന് പറ്റിയ അബദ്ധമായിരുന്നല്ലോ!! അതിനുള്ള 'പണി' അവർക്ക് കിട്ടുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ഈ നോവൽ വളരെ അധികം ശക്തമായ സ്ത്രീ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ ഉള്ള ഒന്നാണ്. ഒരു രാജ്യത്ത് സർക്കാരും അവരെ എതിർക്കുന്ന പാരാമിലിട്ടറി സംഘടനയും എങ്ങനെ നാശം വിതച്ചു എന്നതിന്റെ നേർക്കാഴ്ചയാണ്.. ഇവിടെയുള്ള ഭൂരിഭാഗം ജനങ്ങളും സർക്കാരിന്റെ ഫാസിസത്തിനു ഇരയാകുന്നു എന്നറിയാതെ സർക്കാരിനെ പിന്തുണയ്ക്കുന്ന അജ്ഞരായിരുന്നു. നോവലിൽ പറയുന്ന ഒരു കാര്യം ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ് - അവർ ചെകുത്താനും ചെകുത്താനും ഇടയിൽ ആയിരുന്നു. കൂടാതെ ചുറ്റും കടലും.. എന്നാൽ ശ്രീലങ്കയുടെ കഥ മാത്രമായി ഈ നോവലിനെ കാണാനാകില്ല. പറയാതെ ടി.ഡി പറഞ്ഞു വയ്ക്കുന്ന ഇന്ത്യൻ രാഷ്ട്രീയ പശ്ചാത്തലം ഇവിടെ വ്യക്തമാണ്, വായന മുന്നേറവേ അതു ബോധ്യപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്യും..

2.5/5 A strange mish-mash of a 1000-year old myth and a story set in current times. The myth is about an extremely beautiful and intelligent girl "Devanayaki" who has to submit to the desires of kings. While she does become the queen and is quite respected by her spouse(s), she also has to face misogyny. This forms almost half of the book.
The author tries to draw parallels between the women who were raped by the warring sides in the Sri Lankan civil war and Devanayaki. Also, attention is drawn to the plight of activists who are against both - anti-democratic stance and violence of revolutionary movements (in this case Iyakkam/LTTE) and also against fascism of the state. They are targetted by both sides. Another thread is the plight of a courageous human rights activist who was murdered.
The book didnt work for me as the myth was neither interesting nor did it have a proper parallel. Secondly, if you are writing fiction, you must create interesting characters, offer insights and give some sort of a story. This is bad non-fiction masquerading as fiction. And thirdly, think I will be picking up the acclaimed This Divided Island: Stories from the Sri Lankan War soon.
Since reading Bhyrappa's ಆವರಣ Aavarana , I have had an interest in reading translated fiction from India (other than Hindi which I prefer to read in the original language). While this has been the source of delights - Sunil Gangopadhyay and Benyamin, it can also misfire like this one. But, will keep looking.

ഇത് ദേവനായകിയുടെ കഥയാണ്. പ്രതിസന്ധിഘട്ടങ്ങളിൽ പോലും പതറാതെ താൻ നിലനിൽക്കേണ്ടവളാണ് എന്ന ഉറച്ച ബോധ്യത്തിൽ തന്റെ കൂർമ്മബുദ്ധിയും, സൗന്ദര്യവും കൊണ്ട് അവൾക്ക് വേണ്ടത് സാധിച്ചെടുക്കുന്ന, തന്റെ ലക്ഷ്യ സാക്ഷത്കാരത്തിനു ശേഷം ആകാശം മുട്ടെ വളർന്ന് ഒരു കാൽ സിഗിരിയയിലും അടുത്ത കാൽ ശ്രീപാദമലയിലും വെച്ച് നിർവാണത്തിലേക്ക് യാത്രയാവുന്ന. എന്നാൽ സ്ത്രീകൾക്ക് നേരെ അതിക്രമം ഉണ്ടാവുന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത് അതിനെ പ്രതിരോധിക്കാൻ അവളായി തന്നെ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുന്ന ആണ്ടാൾ ദേവനായകിയുടെ കഥ.

ശ്രീലങ്കയുടെ ചരിത്രവും, മിത്തും വളരെ സമർദ്ധമായി ഏകോപ്പിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് ഒരു തരത്തിലും മുഷിച്ചിൽ തോന്നാത്ത വിധമാണ് എഴുത്തുകാരൻ കഥ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. നോവൽ പലപ്പോഴും ഭൂതകാലത്തേയ്ക്കും വർത്തമാനകാലത്തേയ്ക്കും സഞ്ചരിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഒരു sweet transition നും, അടുത്തത് എന്ത് എന്ന ഉദ്വേഗവും ഉണ്ട് അതുകൊണ്ട് തന്നെ വളരെ ആവേശത്തോടെയാണ് ഓരോ താളുകളും മറിയുന്നത്.

എഴുത്തുകാരൻ ആണ്ടാൾ ദേവനായകിയുടെ കഥ പറയാൻ ശ്രീലങ്കയും പുലികളുടെ ഇയക്കവും, ശ്രീലങ്കയുടെ ആഭ്യന്തരകലാപവും പശ്ചാത്തലമായി തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. ഈ പശ്ചാത്തലും എനിക്ക് തികച്ചും പുതുതായിരുന്നു, അവസാനത്തോട് അടുക്കുമ്പോൾ ചിലയിടങ്ങളിൽ അനാവശ്യമായി കൂട്ടിച്ചേർത്ത പൊരുത്തപ്പെടാനാവാത്ത ചില വയലൻസ് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ പോലും വളരെയേറെ എൻജോയ് ചെയ്താണ് അവസാനം വരെ വായിച്ചു തീർത്തത്.

എഴുത്തുകാരന് നന്ദി, സാധു ജനങ്ങളുടെ ഉന്നമനത്തിനു വേണ്ടി പ്രയത്നിച്ച, ഇയക്കത്തിലെ കൊള്ളരുതായ്മകളെ കുറിച്ച് സംസാരിച്ച ഇയക്കം നിഷ്ടൂരമായി കൊല ചെയ്ത രജനി തിരണഗാമയെ കുറിച്ച് അറിയാത്തവരിലേക്ക് വെളിച്ചം വീശിയതിന്.

ദേശീയത അതിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും നീചമായ തലത്തിലേക്ക് വളരുന്നുവെന്നതാണ്‌ ഈ കാലഗട്ടത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ പ്രശ്നം എന്ന് ഞാൻ കരുതുന്നു.

ടി.ഡി. രാമകൃഷ്ണൻ്റെ ഞാൻ വായിക്കുന്ന ആദ്യ നോവൽ. ഒരേ സമയം ചരിത്രവും വർത്തമാനകാല രാഷ്ട്രീയവും ഭൂതകാലമിത്തും കലർന്ന വ്യത്യസ്തമായൊരു സൃഷ്ടി. സഹസ്രാബ്ദങ്ങൾക്കു മുൻപ് ജീവിച്ചിരുന്ന ദേവനായകി പിന്നീട് പല ജന്മങ്ങളായി അന്തിമമായ നിർവാണത്തിനായി പുനർജനിക്കുന്നു. രജനി തിരണഗാമയായും സുഗന്ധിയായും എല്ലാം പുനർജനിക്കുന്ന ദേവനായകി അവസാനം കത്തിയെരിയുന്ന കൊളംബിൽ നിന്ന് ഒരു കാൽ സിഗിരിയയിലും അടുത്ത കാൽ ശ്രീപാദമലയിലുവെച്ച് വിഹായസ്സിലേക്ക് പറന്നുപോയി പരമമായ നിർവാണത്തിലേക്ക് പ്രവേശിക്കുന്നു.

ഈ നോവലിൻ്റെ സിംഹഭാഗവും ദേവനായകിയിൻ കതൈ ആണ്. ദേവനായകിയുടെ അനുമതിയോടെ ശ്രീവല്ലഭ ബുദ്ധനാർ രചിച്ച "സുസാന സുപിന" എന്ന താളിയോലഗ്രന്ധത്തിൽ പറയുന്നതാണ് ദേവനായകിയിൻ കതൈ. ചേര, ചോള, സിംഹള രാജവംശങ്ങളെപ്പറ്റിയും നളന്ദ, തക്ഷശില മുതലായ ഭാരതീയ സർവ്വകലാശാലകളോടു കിട പിടിക്കുന്ന തരത്തിലുള്ള കാന്തള്ളൂർ ശാലയുടെ ചരിത്രം വരെ ഈ നോവലിൽ പരാമർശിക്കുന്നു. പലവിധ ചരിത്രങ്ങളാൽ സമ്പുഷ്ടമായ ഈ കൃതി രചിക്കാൻ നോവലിസ്റ്റ് ഒരുപാട് പഠനങ്ങൾ നടത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ടെന്നത് ഇത് വായിക്കുന്ന ഓരോ വായനക്കാരനും വ്യക്തമാകും.

"കൗടില്യൻ്റെ അർത്ഥശാസ്ത്രവും മറ്റും ചെറുപ്പത്തിലേ ഞാൻ പഠിച്ചു. കാന്തല്ലൂർ കോയിക്കൻ്റെ മകൾ യുദ്ധതന്ത്രങ്ങളും രാജനീതിയും പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്നതു കേട്ടു തന്നെയാണ് വളർന്നത്. പക്ഷേ, അതിലെവിടെയും നിരപരാധികളായ സാധാരണ ജനങ്ങളെ കൊന്നൊടുക്കാനോ സ്ത്രീകളെ മാനഭംഗപ്പെടുത്താനോ പറയുന്നില്ല. ചോളപ്പടയും സിംഹളപ്പടയും എല്ലാകാലത്തും അതു തന്നെയാണ് ചെയ്തു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നത്. നിർവാണത്തിൻ്റെ എത്ര പരമമായ അവസ്ഥയിലെത്തിയാലും അത്തരത്തിലെന്തെങ്കിലും സംഭവിച്ചാൽ എനിക്ക് സഹിക്കാൻ കഴിയില്ല. പെണ്ണിൻ്റെ കണ്ണുനീർ വീഴുന്നിടത്തെല്ലാം ഓടിയെത്തേണ്ടി വരും. തെറ്റുചെയ്യുന്നവരുടെ നഗരങ്ങൾ ചുട്ടെരിക്കേണ്ടിവരും"

This book here is a story of one woman’s life and struggles, in the backdrop of the LTTE conflict in Sri Lanka. The subject is quite powerful, given the human angle and the fact that wars make for compelling storytelling. But sadly I could not empathise with any part of the narrative, which says a lot because how could one NOT empathise with characters living in a war torn country! It’s a bit of a surprise for me because the book is highly acclaimed and has won several awards, including the 2017 Vayalar Award for exemplary works of literature in Malayalam and the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award. Which leads me to wonder if the narrative has been lost in translation.

The novel weaves in and out of the present day and the Sri Lanka from history - the protagonist Peter Jeevanandam, searching for his long lost love, Sugandhi and then, Devanayaki the mythic figure from history, consort of kings and a larger than life woman at the end. But the book reads as dull as a theoretical dissertation on Sri Lankan myths and history. There is no atmosphere or a poignancy in the narrative. It’s surgical, artificial, mechanical, with no emotions.

I’ve read other Malayalam books translated into English (K R Meera’s Hangwoman, translated exemplarily by J Devika, MT Vasudevan Nair’s Bhima, translated by Gita Krishnankutty) and I didn’t feel this kind of gap (for want of a better word) between what I’m reading and what I would’ve liked to read instead. Of course, there’s no way for me to know this for sure unless I read the original Malayalam and since I can’t do that, I’ll have to give the benefit of doubt to the translation and assume that the book somehow didn’t work for me. It could’ve been great, though. I wish it had.

The good part of this book is portrayal of Rajani Thiranagame. The story outlines life of 3 ladies in the backdrop of Sri Lanka, though the title only talks about 2 only.

For me Andal Deivanayaki is the real hero and somehow fails short somewhere.

Nice read though.
