Rome is a nice travel book covering the historic sites of this eternal city. There a photos and drawings to accompany the brief description and history of each landmark.

Well presented introduction to the world of ancient Rome, which the book presents with multiple coloured pictures and diagrams. The work is mostly architectural, not choosing to dwell overmuch on the lives of the Romans. The few historical characters presented appear with respect to the buildings and monuments they created.

This is an archaeological guide to classical Rome, hence the author carefully avoids the ancient and medieval Christian civilisation of the city, unless this great presence in the eternal city in some way contributed to the preservations of classical Rome. Of particular interest to the classical Roman enthusiasts are the rather detailed reconstructions of what the ancient city might have looked at. Unfortunately, the books is rather large and rather unsuited to carrying around the city, but it is certainly useful in planning trips.

Now to move on to the mores of the Roman people, excellently presented by Sidwell and Jones [http://www.amazon.co.uk/World-Rome-In...].
