In a post-World War III nuclear wasteland, weapons specialist and survival expert John Thomas Rourke forms an unlikely alliance with an ex-Nazi in order to completely rid the earth of Nazis and Communists
Jerry Ahern (born Jerome Morrell Ahern) was a science fiction and action novel author best known for his post apocalyptic survivalist series The Survivalist. The books in this series are heavy with descriptions of the weapons the protagonists use to survive and prosecute a seemingly never-ending war amongst the remnants of the superpowers from pre-apocalypse times.
Ahern was also a firearms writer, who published numerous articles in magazines such as Guns & Ammo, Handguns and Gun World.
Jerry Ahern passed away on July 24, 2012 after a long struggle with cancer.
Ahern also released books under pseudonym Axel Kilgore.
John Rourke and Co. along with the newly arrived crew of the Eden Project have repelled the Russian Communist threat; and now they must focus on the Nazis hidden in South America which throws them into a strange alliance. The Survivalist series always has many moving pieces to follow, and that has been very noticeable since the 500 year time skip. In The Rebellion Ahern focuses almost entirely on the Nazis of this [post]post apocalyptic world. While it is abundantly clear who the bad guys are in i>The Rebellion, there is the aspect of these democratic Germans looking to Rourke to guide them in overthrowing their Nazi leadership which I enjoyed.
The story itself unfolds almost exactly as you'd expect; with one thing I didn't see coming which leads into the next novel. Also John's wife, Sarah, tags along on the adventure which is a welcome change of pace for her character (previously always on the run or emotional subplots). There's plenty of action as is a staple of the Survivalist series, with many hero moments and description of weaponry galore. A solid 2.5/5 stars, but for pulp fans this is a 4/5.
John broke into a nazi stronghold and managed to blow a hole in a room that would have released a bomb if they opened the door and performed surgery on the german anti nazi leader to remove an explosive from his neck and then Natalia managed to unlock his neck brace with lock picks and everyone got out with a few bruised ribs. They even delivered twins from a lady being tortured. I enjoyed the many references to Paul’s thinning hair and the Natalia/John/Sarah love triangle!! Just be poly seriously…also John finally admitted to being a chauvinist and we met a Dr. who can tell a lady is pregnant “just by her eyes.” Lucky for the advanced Nazi medical spray or everyone would have needed more recovery time between battles.

There's always a lot happening in these books but its never too much not to be able to follow usually and this is a good example of just how extreme the situation can be but Rourke just keeps doing what he's doing and killing who needs killing.
This is my favorite adventure series. Dr John Thomas Rourke leads his family and friends through a post apocalyptic world fighting ever step if the way. Fantastic characters and plots. Very detailed weapon descriptions. Excellent series. My highest recommendation
