His work ranged from the delicate to the monumental, but all had one thing in common: the beauty of the natural world. He had a deep appreciation for the elusive link between the human spirit and the sublime force of nature.
He spent his entire life in service to his two great passions: painting and nature. Through widespread exhibition of his artwork and publication of his illustrated children’s books, Mr. Locker touched the hearts and minds of countless people.
Mr. Locker’s early paintings were poetic landscapes. Dr. Joshua C. Taylor, former director of the National Collection of Fine Arts for the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., wrote, "Although Locker’s landscapes are not glimpses of a new Arcadia, the quotation from the past re-emphasizes their cerebral play. They call attention less to Nature than to the complex intermingling of perception and thought in the mind of man. Suddenly, seeing becomes thinking, and thinking a delight to the age."
In 1982, Thomas Locker’s career took on a new and even broader dimension. In an effort to connect with a wider audience and educate younger minds, he began work on his first children’s picture book, Where the River Begins. Today, Mr. Locker’s exceptional paintings and illustrations grace the pages of some 30 different books, several of which he also wrote. These unique books have been honoured with numerous awards, including the prestigious Christopher Award, the John Burroughs Award, and the New York Times Award for best illustration.
Thomas Locker’s landscapes have a quality all their own. His years of experimentation and research into the glazing techniques and paint chemistry of traditional European painting have enabled him to achieve a new vision of the traditional for a non-traditional age.
His books have received many awards, including the John Burroughs Young Reader Award, NCTE Notable Trade Books in the Language Arts, NSTA-CBS Outstanding Science Trade Book for Children, the Christopher Award, and others.

Unusual Children's Book
Walking with Henry: Based on the Life and Works of Henry David Thoreau is a children's book which proclaims the wonders of nature.
Why did I read this?
I am obsessed with Walden, probably reading it a dozen times. Why am I obsessed with Walden? I am a true believer of transcendentalism, the belief in simple, plain living and high thinking.
This children's book is unique in that I am glad that it focuses on nature, and the pictures are absolutely beautiful. My buddy reader rated this 5 stars.
But as for me, I was a little disappointed in the lack of amazing Thoreau quotes, life changing quotes, and none of them were included. Here are a sampling of his quotes from Walden:
"The cost of a thing is the amount of what I will call life which is required to be exchanged for it."
"I would rather sit on a pumpkin and have it all to myself than be crowded on a velvet cushion."
"I had three pieces of limestone on my desk but I was terrified to find that they required to be dusted daily, when the furniture of my mind was all undusted still, and I threw them out the window in disgust."
"All change is a miracle to contemplate, but it is a miracle taking place every instant."
"To be a philosopher is not merely to have subtle thoughts, nor even to found a school, but so to love wisdom as to live according to its dictates, a life of simplicity, independence, magnanimity, and trust."
"The philosopher is in advance of his age even in the outward form of his life. He is not fed, sheltered, clothed, warmed, like his contemporaries."

This is a beautifully illustrated lyrical poem about Thoreau. I’m looking forward to sharing it with my sons. I was disappointed that it contains very little of Thoreau’s actual writing. It would need to be used in conjunction with a collection of his works,

Pretty paintings, pretty words. We've been learning about Thoreau for a few weeks, and this book is one of the better that we've read on the topic. It has a page of short quotations by Thoreau in the back, and while we do not agree with much of his philosophy, we did appreciate many of his thoughts. Good discussion points arose about wise stewardship and dominion over creation vs. worshipping nature and leaving it always to its own devices.

simple and easy read

Though not a biographical work, this book illustrates the driving force behind most of Thoreau's most famous works, his ceaseless excursions into nature. Built heavily on the quotes that Locker extracted from Thoreau's writing, this book provides a clear understanding of the man that Thoreau strove to be. The paintings are beautiful, as are all of the paintings that Locker creates: highly detailed, colorful, entrancing. I know I've said it in my other reviews of Locker's work, but I feel like I could walk into his paintings and be completely at ease in the new setting. Though this isn't the book to read if you are looking for a chronology of his life, this is an excellent source to consult if you are attempting to better understand Thoreau's source of motivation.

I simply love Thomas Locker's paintings, but his simple biographical stories are really a great way for kids to meet "the greats." This beautiful book talks about Thoreau and his love for the woods. At the back of the book, there is a page full of his most famous quotes. Loved it.
