Provides parents practical advice on how to teach their child to swim, from first activities to do with their child in the water, through how to teach all the major strokes, diving, swimming underwater, floating techniques, and emergency procedures such as conserving body heat.
Susan Meredith grew up in Yorkshire, and when she wasn't playing out or dancing, she was busy reading or making little books of her own, mainly about ballet. She's now written more than 20 real books for Usborne, on subjects ranging from saving the planet to playing football, from world religions to the human body. Her book Growing Up won the Times Educational Supplement's senior information book of the year award but her own personal favourite has to be Hamsters.
I've been using the tips from the beginning of the book (activities to be done while still in the bath) and our little one is loving them. It has very good tips on how and when to take your baby to the swimming pool. It also has some tips at the end part that are good even for ourselves as adults to improve our swimming.
It seems like if you don't start from the get-go when your child is a baby, you've missed the window of opportunity for this book. Also, it says to make any progress you have to swim at least 5 days a week in a pool with little to no chemicals...we just don't access to that. There were some good ideas and suggestions...
While it does focus on starting with infants, there are techniques and games for older children. I didn't feel like there was a lot of fluff. I think the stroke explanations are complicated but I am not a trained or skilled swimmer.
it may may make you feel like you have missed out on important steps if you don't start the book when your child is still a couple of months old, but it's not the case. the book does have some good tips and helps you move along.
We're heading to the YMCA for swimming lessons anyways, but I wanted a book on the basics of teaching a child to swim. This book was only okay, there were really only 2 pages that pertained to my situation. The book wasted time on fluff, like how to pick a community pool and stuff that was obvious. Not a bad book, but I hoped for some more help.
Actually this book first came out in the EIGHTIES, not '88 not '92 like it says I used to love looking at this book when I was a child. Didn't like looking at pics of a baby's vagina though :|
