Les 3 fruits is a fantasy story told in the style of medieval legend and fable. An aging king, having led a wonderful life and risen to the very top of things, realizes death is not far away, and becomes consumed by fear and horror -- the mightiest falling the farthest and no longer having the glory that is 'He' exist. He then seeks to find a way -- any way -- to cheat death, and may indeed find it -- at a terrible price.
The story is interesting indeed. Drawn with artistic water coloring that reflects the mists of time and legend, it reads like a fable on the value of life and love, like a chivalrous medieval tale, and even like a feminist, or traditional, take on the needs and desires of men versus those of women. Sections of the story are repetitive, like a child's tale, and are largely carried by the art and what you know will come a few pages after the boredom. I think the fact that it is a story within a story within a story, and with multiple plot twists and potential surprises kept me interested and raised this above what it could have been...though it also could have had more heroic action and traditional monster-fighting and questing, and still could have been good.
On the other hand, there are parts of the story which are never fully-explained, and where it is not entirely clear that it is done for mystery and imagination purposes, or because the writing is not so great. The same could be said for the story's recycling of various elements to produce a catchy whole, and the ending, but this leads to a larger question of how all fiction is composed, standing on the shoulders of giants, the lines between 'inspiration' and 'theft', and so on! /ramble
The drawings are unbelievable. I loved every bit of the images created by Oriol: colour, plasticity, feelings... but the story is quite terrible.
The plot pretends to be a tale with the structure of the classic king-with-three-sons story; only the king enjoys a more relevant role here, while the experiences of the sons (and the daughter) are dull and uninteresting. Characters are contradictory; not because they evolve, but because their actions don't match their descriptions. And the story can't decide whether to follow the classic pattern or be alternative and eventually, it is neither. The result is not interesting, is not funny, is not a revision, is not a long-established model; it doesn't teach, doesn't amuse, doesn't provoke. Turning the beautiful pages and laying calmly our eyes on the drawings is everything that can be obtained, and it is fair enough.
The story of a royal family, where life and death clash with evil spells and where cruelty doesn't matter if it serves to antagonize destiny. Very elaborate and expressive illustrations, ideal for representing those dark and strange times.
Errege familia baten istorioa, non bizitzak eta heriotzak sorginkeria gaiztoekin talka egiten duten eta ankerkeriak berdin dio patua aurkatzeko balio badu. Ilustrazio oso landuak eta adierazgarriak eta garai ilun eta arraro horiek irudikatzeko aproposa.
I picked it up and read a couple of pages before bed one night and I wasn't in a hurry to pick it up again because it was so dark, but a few days later my husband said, ooh I read that book on your bedside, it was good! So back to the top of the pile it went! I recommend this if you love gorgeous but dark art that pierces your soul, if you like your fairy tales twisted, if you can stand heroines who break the norms of the day yet don't have much agency through most of the story... I wouldn't exactly call this feminist, but there is a message about feminine power.
