Led Zeppelin: Heaven and Hell, An Illustrated History

Rate this book
Since their debut in 1970 with "Whole Lotta Love", Led Zeppelin initiated the heavy metal sound. During that decade the band dominated the rock world like no other group has. The book is a history of their music and superstardom. Included is an interview with Jimmy Page telling the history of the band in his own words; inside-the-studio details of recordings; and a chronology of the band's career. The photographs include unpublished images by the band's official tour photographer, Neil Preston.

Charles R. Cross

This is Charles R. Cross, a rock music journalist and author based in Seattle. He is the founder of Backstreets magazine, a periodical for fans of Bruce Springsteen, editor of "Springsteen: the Man and His Music," a compilation of Backstreets articles, and is also author of a biography of Kurt Cobain, titled Heavier Than Heaven. His most recent release is entitled Room Full Of Mirrors - A Biography Of Jimi Hendrix.

In 2004, while conducting research for the Hendrix book, Cross rediscovered the gravesite of Jimi Hendrix's mother, Lucille Jeter Hendrix, in an abandoned section of Greenwood Memorial Park, where Jimi Hendrix himself is buried in an elaborate granite memorial. The gravesite of Lucille Hendrix was lost because the standard welfare marker of her day, an inscribed brick, became buried in decades of mud from the area's notorious heavy rains. Cross delivered a moving eulogy for Lucille when a proper headstone was dedicated at the site.

Courtney Love, the widow of Kurt Cobain, has acquired the rights to Heavier Than Heaven, which is now being made into a film by Universal Pictures. This is the first film to be made from Cross' work.

First Published in 1991, Heaven and Hell is a Beautiful book with lots of great pictures in Full Color that had not been seen by the masses. The book chronicles their tours with excellent commentary, set lists, and bootleg references. The book tells of the rise of the Zeppelin bootleg industry which is excellent. Lots of information on collectibles and such is included in print and picture. Also, each track from each album is laid out with various stories on each. I would Highly recommend this book to anyone interested in collecting Zeppelin memorabilia.

I love this book. This was my first book that talked about Led Zeppelin performances and their setlists. Other books have come out since this one with more complete information as new tapes are released, but this was the original for me. I actually lost my first copy and went out and got a replacement, I like it so.
