I'm not sure what to think about this book. I am not even sure what it is about or what its point is.

The cover and the title Solutions for Cold Feet and Other Little Problems interested me. What charming little illustrations! What an interesting title!

But the book really... doesn't have any kind of plot or message.

MC is a little girl of about 9 (maybe?). The book opens with a title page that says: SOLUTIONS FOR A MISSING SHOE and shows her dog running gleefully away with a shoe in his mouth.

Check the closet

Look under the bed.

Search behind the couch

And under the table

At this point the MC finds the dog has destroyed her shoe under the table. It's in tatters.

Wear a mismatched pair

She glares at the shame-faced dog as she wears one shoe from the chewed-up pair and one from a new pair. Ummmmm.... why not just wear the other, complete pair?

She angrily walks behind her dog as he is on a leash and they are outside. The dog looks worriedly back at her, wagging his tail.

On the next page, they both look with concern at the sky. SOLUTIONS FOR GETTING CAUGHT IN THE RAIN

Run

Take cover outside

We see the girl trying to walk closely behind someone with an umbrella to shield herself.

Take cover inside

Okay, here we see the little girl has gone inside the library and LEFT HER DOG OUT IN THE COLD RAIN. What a jerk. Grrrr. I'm angry. The dog is sad and wet. She is looking out the library window at him.

Splash in the puddles

We see the girl has come out of the library. I'd like to think she was so guilt-ridden about leaving her dog outside that she spent only a few minutes in there. But who knows. She is glaring at the dog, looking very grumpy, one foot submerged in a deep puddle. The dog is frolicking happily in the puddles.

SOLUTIONS FOR A MELTING ICE CREAM CONE

Lots of napkins

Eat fast

We see the girl happily eating a dripping ice cream cone.

Share with a friend

The dog jumps up on her. Her face is aghast. She's got a big stain on her dress. She's holding up her hands to ward him off.

Get another ice cream cone

We see the dog on the left page licking the ice cream cone which is splattered on the pavement. The girl is sulkily and angrily standing in line for another cone with her arms crossed, looking at the ground.

Dogs shouldn't eat ice cream. Two, why the heck is she so upset? She's buying another cone. It's not really that big of a deal.

SOLUTIONS FOR A BORING DAY

Now dog and girl are in the back yard. Girl is draped over a swing, staring at the ground. She looks bored out of her mind. The dog is lying in the grass.

The girl sits up. The sweet little dog brings her a stick. Then he brings her his leash.

She stands on the swing and watches as he brings her a blanket.

Find a friend to play with

She uses these things to build a tent. She and Dog lie happily in the tent.

SOLUTIONS FOR A FLYAWAY HAT

We see the girl and the dog outside in the snow. A big gust of wind blows the girl's hat away. The dog barks and chases it.

It lands high up in a tree.

Use your mittens

The girl covers her ears with her mittened hands to keep her ears warm. The dog holds a stick in his mouth.

Rewrap your scarf

She wraps her scarf around her whole head. The dog rolls a snowball. She sits on a huge snowball and stares up at the tree.

Make a snowman

She STANDS ON TOP OF A SNOWMAN to reach her hat with a stick. Very dangerous. I'm cringing just looking at this picture. The dog is off to the left, rolling another snowball with his nose.

SOLUTIONS FOR COLD FEET

Big boots

We see the girl and dog leaving the snowman and heading back toward the house. The girl has given the snowman a stick for an arm, so it looks like he is waving goodbye to them.

Wool socks

The girl takes off her coat and hangs it on the coatrack. She is wearing thick red-and-white striped socks. The dog is looking at her and wagging his tail. She's left her mittens and hat and boots scattered haphazardly on the floor.

Warm slippers

The dog brings her her slippers.

A blanket

The dog helps her carry the blanket.

And a dog

We see the girl on the couch happily reading a book. The dog is sleeping at her feet, curled up on a blanket.

EL FIN
...

Okay. SO.... ????

The illustrations to this book are charming and delightful. Excellent. The title is intriguing because 'cold feet' could mean feet that are cold or could mean someone who is experiencing apprehension about some plan they made. So the book naturally catches your attention and makes you curious.

But what is the point here? What is the book's message? I'm still at a loss.

In three sections, the girl is angry and sullen. She treats the dog badly, even leaving it out in the rain!

In the next three sections, it seems like the girl and dog are good friends who work together and have fun, happy times together.

The book also represents the four seasons. Spring is the rain. Summer is the ice cream. Fall is the 'boring day.' Winter is the part where she loses her hat and then comes in from the snowy day to read. This is very subtle and well done. It's not obviously a 'season book.'

I don't really understand. Dogs are loving and good friends? They love you even when you are a jerk and grumpy and treat them poorly? Is that the point? Or... is it honestly offering solutions to these problems it is listing? After I read the book I was at a loss. I didn't dislike the book, but it left me baffled and mildly bored.

Tl;dr - What on earth was that all about??!!?!
Best feature: the illustrations.
Worst feature: had no point and not even any basic concept.

A girl and her dog face the small and big problems of life head on, and with lots of zany solutions. You can’t help but love the relationship between the girl and her dog, marveling at both the frustration and the love each shows for the other. The plethora of solutions that arise to handle the problems as well as the quirkiness of the solutions gives one hope.

A girl and her dog try to find solutions to simple every day problems, like what to do if you lose a shoe, if your ice cream cone is melting, or if you get caught in the rain.
It's a good idea to ask the kids what they would do if they have to solve that situation before reading it. The answers are hilarious.

I received this copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

It's a cute little book for young children especially if they have a dog. The illustrations were simple for a child to understand. I can't see it becoming a children's classic.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

Well, it seems I am having no luck with picture books ARCs this time. Not only this one, but the previous one wasn’t that good, and/or didn’t meet my expectations. Both books were books that really looked fun and interesting.

This one was boring, bland, and I also had expected a bit differently. The solutions were silly, the problems even sillier. I was annoyed with the little girl, especially at first, with how she treated her dog. Sure, he is a bit playful, yes, he will eat stuff, yes, you can’t stay inside while it rains when he is outside, but do you really need to look at him like that?
Later I saw a different side, one in which she treats her dog as her friend, and they look really sweet together. Still I would like to see more of that side, and less of the annoyed one.

The solutions/problems follow semi-story. You first have a problem, and each solution is part of a story, in the end you will see a whole day, or part of a day of the girl. I liked that this was done, but, yeah, it did get a bit boring in the end. I wished for a bit more excitement than just daily dilly-dallying.

The art was pretty decent, it is a style I kind of like seeing. However it felt a bit empty at times, I am not sure how to explain this one though. It is just a feeling I had.

Would I recommend this one? I am not sure. The art is nice, as I said, and I did like that the solutions form a story, but there is also enough I didn’t like.

This was so precious.
I loved how the book started with the girl being somewhat annoyed and frustrated then goes on to show how it's not what appears on the surface to the casual observer but it's all the moments in between that make it worth it.

This is a very sweet book highlighting very practical solutions to everyday kid problems. What exactly DO you do if you lose one of your shoes? Or if your ice cream starts to melt in the sun? Turns out you have several options and this lovely picture book featuring a little girl and her dog shows how the two of them resolve each dilemma together. I read this book with my four-year old who loved looking at the pictures to see what they would do next. She was pretty quick to pick up that though the girl was cross with the dog at times, he turned out to be a solution. Being a little girl herself with a troublesome dog, I think she could relate.

Bright, cheerful pictures and a very sweet story about friendship. This is great for little ones who are learning to problem solve and a heart-warming little tale for those who have dogs and understand just how special a friend they can be.

Many thanks to Tundra Books and NetGalley for providing a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Solutions for Cold Feet and other little problems, by Canadian author and illustrator Carey Sookocheff, will charm young readers of age five and younger and help them think critically to solve other or bigger problems. Problems include a missing shoe, getting caught in the rain, a melting ice cream cone, a boring day, a flyaway hat, and cold feet. The solutions go from one word to no more than six words on a page. The young girl who is the main character is nameless, so children can pretend it’s them. (read more...)You can read this entire review at San Diego Book Review

Book contained cute examples of problem solving for children.
I found the illustrations lacked depth and the colors used were not very attractive.
Good premise, but not executed fully.

I received a Board Book copy of Carey Sookocheff’s book “Solutions for Cold Feet” through the Early Readers Giveaway her publisher recently had on LibraryThing, and the following is my honest opinion, or at the least my inner-child’s honest opinion.

This book brought my inner-child back to the days I when I first began reading books, back to the days when the pages of the book I held in my tint little hands had been thick as a board so I could turn the pages without tearing any of them,

I loved how the little girl in this book got to solve the problems she had to face, similar to the problems any boy or girl my age back then had to face on our own.

I loved the simple way the book has been written, direct and uncomplicated so it would be easily understood by someone like at the age of four, without the aid of any parent.

I loved the simple colors which are used to illustrate the matching the words on each page. All in all, I loved this book, I only wish the girl in it had some more problems she needed to.

So, to thank the author for writing this book for me and other children like me, I want to give her and the person who did the drawings 5 GOLDEN STARS, just like I ones I got from my parents for doing something good.

Not much of a plot here but a series of problematic scenarios showing a girl and her dog. First she's missing her shoe. After looking all over for it she discovers the dog chewing it under the table so she decides to wear mismatched shoes. She gets an ice cream but it's melting. What to do? Share with a friend. (Here the dog jumps on her causing her to drop the ice cream.) A lot of little mishaps lead to a cozy ending of the day, with the girl sitting on her feet to warm them.

I didn't find this as humorous as it could've been nor did I find the solutions to be satisfying.

My three year old demanded we get this book from the library, after being immediately pulled in by the cover. She asked me, "Where is her sock?! Why isn't she wearing her sock? Is she holding it?" Reading it reinforced her belief that she should have a pet dog, which I didn't need, but I appreciated the sweet simplicity of this book.

I enjoyed the "solutions" and the chapter like feel within a picture book. I think it leads to a great lesson and conversation when faced with life's daily, but simple, problems that can be frustrating at times...there are options.

This book is a super simple read. It talks about various small problems people may encounter in their day. Going on to tell them the best solutions for them. This can be beneficial as students will get an understanding to not become upset when a problem arises. But to rather look for solutions.

This was cute- definitely for dog lovers. I think the goal was creative thinking, but I don't know that it always worked for me like that. But the pictures were cute, and good conversation starters.

Meh.

This was one of those books that is too simple to appeal to children and not simple enough to remind adults of childhood and appeal in that way. It was just... meh.

A cute concept but I don’t like how angry she was at the dog throughout most of the book. At one point she leaves the dog the out in the rain, very rude.
