I never really know how I should write these things. Do I go the professional, but boring route and talk about myself in the third person (which feels unnatural), or do I do first person, like a dating site? Sadly, second person doesn't work here, that would be cool.

Something like:
You are looking at the profile of GoodReads author A.S. Oren. You know she is a cat person, and owns three of the little fuzzy things.

I digress. I live in Colorado, born and raised here all my life. Like you read above, I have three cats and want a big dog (perhaps an Alaskan Malamute).

I love writing, it's one of the few things I get joy out of and know I'm good at. I've been doing it off and on since I could draw and think I was writing words with backwards sevens and squiggle lines.

I currently work as a ghostwriter, graphic artist and editor.

Feel free to friend me or message. I like getting to know other people who like reading and writing, too.

Spearwood Book One by A.S. Oren – 5 Stars

It’s, re-vamped, refreshed and reinvigorated!

Lead Girl: Avalon Radcliffe
Lead Guy: It’s a reverse haram
Point of view: Avalon - first person
Part of a series: Yes
Happy ever after: NA
Subgenre: Dragons, Angels, Paranormal.

Some of you might remember the first version of Spearwood, well throw out any preconceptions. If you’re new to the party, well get stuck in.

This book follows Avalon from the age of five through to fifteen. It’s the setting for the series; you learn how everything came about. She goes to a training camp to learn how to cope with Spearwood. Paden, Maverick, and Jericho attend the camp with her and they become fast friends. I don’t want to give too much away, I think you need to just read it to see this awesomeness for yourself.

A.S.Oren manages to pack in a bucket load of emotion and she paints a vivid scene. I can picture the whole campsite and the entire school. She also manages to make you laugh one second, swoon the next and burst into tears on the next page. This book doesn’t get too steamy but she plans to up them to eighteen in the next book and then its new adult all the way!!

I will leave you with this little swooning scene:

I was expecting this book to be aimed toward more of an older crowd (like 18 and up??) but you basically spend the whole time reading about children(5 - 16??). (because even when I downloaded it, there was a *warning* saying it was an NA novel and not YA so...???)

The story could be interesting with the whole lore behind it, so I don't see why they couldn't have laid the background story and lore in her early years and then fast forward to when she's, I don't know, a new adult?? And take it from there.

As a child the protagonist is written as an adult. Like at five years old she's speaking pretty advanced grammar and reading dictionaries. In the book lore, she's the only natural born female in the world full of shape shifting dragons (because of a curse) and all other females are made through magic after being born male. So the protag is a special snowflake who is also being hunted down(??). Her parents give her to this guy they know, so he can protect her and teach her survival skills along with these other kids because once they turn 16 they go to Spearwood to fight for their right to stay alive and see if they're dragon enough. (?)

But the book isn't focused on any of that it's focused on the protag and the three boys she's raised with and their interactions.

I really really did not need to read about this 11 year old girl and her reverse harem "like the animes we watch" (actual statement in the book) and how much she wants to kiss them and can't wait until she's 16 to have sex with them (all of these boys and the protag included have been raised together since they were toddlers?? and their was a rule they couldn't have romantic relations until they left. but BOY HOWDEE GUESS WHAT that did not stop her from kissing them) because that is extremely uncomfortable and gross to read about and just.. NO.

Overall, don't read this book expecting it to be aimed towards older aged groups because while it definitely wasn't written for the younger crowd, it's definitely not for an older crowd. Like, I don't even know how this book should be categorized. Just avoid.

Note to self : don't always listen to your friends when it comes to reading.

- special snowflake
- weird reverse harem with kids
- awful pop culture references, and god knows i hate those
- 167 pages and didn't even manage to make it to the end.

Bye bye

I honestly thought this book had a good theme but I'm not a big fan of an 11 year old girl having a bunch of boys just pining after her and being ok with her just making out with all of them. Even as the character ages to 15 the idea still bothered me. Now I'm not just a prude who doesn't like a big of steaminess but I have never been one to be a fan of love triangles or whatever this is. I liked the overall theme but this was rather annoying and the ending of the story felt more like the end of a chapter rather than the end of a book. I like a good cliffhanger but this was really abrupt.

I read the earlier original version of Spearwood and absolutely loved it. I rated it 5 stars. In fact, I would have given it above 5, if I could have. But this new version of it hurts. It hurts that I now can’t get a continuation of that wonderful earlier series. Three stars is actually me being extremely generous since the only things I liked about this was that the author has good grammar, and I liked the original idea. Where do I start on what I didn’t like about this new series that completely killed my beloved earlier series? When the dragon-angel hybrid concept got raised my suspension of disbelief, tipped his hat to me and left the room. The growing up at the farm was boring. The boys at the farm blurred together. Admittedly, I just read the first 30 percent and skimmed the rest. The beginning sequences of her family escaping was disjointed like the end scenes in the LOTR: Return of the King movie. Avalon, who I loved for her sweet, shy, insecure, courageous nature was a spoiled brat in this, driven by her hormones and bent on kissing every male her age who so much as appeared in the novel. In the original book, I loved the mystery of her painful changing and how she had to endure the pain, I loved that she had trouble fitting in with the all boy school, I loved that she could stand up to guys who were bullies, and, yes, I loved that there was that tension of who she might fall in love with (I think that one irks me the most since the answer is, she ends up with everyone except the two I really wanted her to be with). The wanting to kiss every guy in sight was especially disturbing during the section where she was supposed to be 11, not to mention that the beginning section she was supposed to be 6 but her dialogue made her sound 15, and there was even a mention where one character said she sounded 30. I plead again for putting the original series back out. Could even market it as an alternate timeline. It really hurts that I can’t continue the series this used to be.

I read the first version of this series and I really liked it; there were plot twists and there was mystery. Avalon didn't remember her family, she didn't remember Paden and Maverick and she didn't remember that she already knew she was a dragon. That's completely changed with this new series, and I'm so disappointed I can't even put it into words. It's total crap now, it's like some horny teenage girl wrote a fan fiction on the series and this was the result. Avalon knows everything from the start, so we don't learn anything along the way and instead of Avalon trying to figure out her feelings for her friends and being somewhat oblivious to how much they like her, she's a bit of a tramp now. She practically has sex with, or its clear she will at some point have sex with, nearly every boy she comes across. Adding in this rubbish about a divine "fold" does not disguise the fact that the author has tried to placate everyone by not picking just one of the boys. Avalon went on a proper adventure in the first version and she was an absolutely kick ass character but she's been destroyed, along with her friends. It's quite sad, this series has now died in its infancy. The name dropping of so many different books and TV shows is also ridiculous, and the whole sleezy thing with the anime... yeah crap. Why couldn't you have just stayed true to your story and finished it?? RIP Avalon.

This RH girl is pretty damn happy with this re-hashed Spearwood Academy. With the much needed editing and character/world building improved drastically, this has turned into quite a gem. My only quarrel is personal; Avalon's kind of a bitch. I'm hoping, in the books to come, that she will grow into a less pretentious ass. But don't mistake me, character flaws are incredibly important and I enjoyed this book enormously.

I have to give A. S. Oren serious props here. As an arthur, I believe it takes a lot of courage to put yourself out there. But it is a whole other thing to say "You know, this isn't my best. I'm going to do better." And she did, fabulously. So thank you Oren, for not giving up on your story, your fans, and most importantly, yourself.

Four stars

I've really been getting into the reverse harem books and even starting to read shifter books. The spear wood series happens to be both. Originally, this series was written as YA but then rewritten to NA. The first book in the series focuses pretty much entirely on the past. The friendship between Avalon and some of the boys starts at 5 and slowly from there we begin to meet more of them. It's a bit slow going on that's why I've given it 4 stars. I've finished 1.5 (which can't be skipped like most half books in a series) and from that point it picks up a lot. It's also on KU!

Spearwood begins when Avalon is five years old. She and her family are running from the monsters that are chasing her. In order to help protect them all Avalon must be seperated from her family in order to train till she becomes fifteen. This is hard on all of them, but Avalon soon has a new family. And as she comes into her powers things start to get even more strange for all of them.

This was a very unique story! I adored how interesting it was, and I loved how it started out with them at a very young age and we got to watch them grow. That was truly different from any story I've read before.

I loved the dragon aspect to the story as well, that just threw in a whole lot of interesting things to happen.

The only thing that was a little hard to deal with was the fact that it was hard for me, as the reader, to really "feel" what the main characters were feeling. I didn't really feel like it had a lot of depth when it came to the emotion of the story. But other than that I thought it was good.

The story starts with Avalon when she's five. Monsters are coming after her family and her parents think that the the only way to stop that is to send Avalon away.
So she has to go live with Edgar and three boys for ten years. There they all prepare for the day they will have to enter Spearwood.
I have really mixed feelings about this book. I'm not sure if I like it. It was interesting and managed to capture my interest but at the same time it was kind of confusing in some parts.

I think the main thing that weirds me out about this book is that the characters are fifteen...I think I’m going to read the next book and see what happens next, but maybe later. It’s not really the kind of plot that makes you want to keep reading, if you know what I mean.

Wow! Dragons, angels, magic and more!

I had been seeing recommendations for this series for awhile and so I decided to finally read the first book. From start to finish, the main characters, were in constant training for Spearwood, a school for dragons, when they turned 15. Avalon, a dragon shifter, had to leave her family when she was five for her safety. She is taken to Edward's camp where she meets two brothers, Paden and Maverick, who become her best friends while they all train and live separated from their families. About a year later, Jericho, shows up and becomes part of the group. As they turn into teenagers, feeling begin to change between the group. The book was well written, the descriptions were detailed, the character descriptions and dialogue were done really well and the plot has me guessing what is going to happen next.

It was alright

The story seemed a little rushed and roughly pieced together, like certain elements were added without really thinking it through. It is very original, however, I don’t like how mature the author makes the young characters seem. Also, it is a little hard to keep the character straight at some points, perhaps the character development could have been brought out more. All that being said, will I read the next one? Probably.

I really enjoyed this book. Couldn't put it down once I started the book. But I didn't like how Jericho started to pull away from the group. That made me mad. I really liked his Character. But I really did enjoy the book.

Overall, good book enjoyed it.

Loved the series the first time, but since it has been redone, it is so much better :) it is longer and more details, I feel more connected! I’m glad I did a reread :)

Totally worth reading!

Spearwood Book One by A.S. Oren is a newly revamped Spearwood Academy. The book begins when Avalon is a child and spans the time from training with Edgar to when she first arrives at the academy. Old fans of the series will like it and for those that didn’t read the old series, you’ll fall in love with the characters and world.

Avalon is essentially the same girl we met in the original. She’s tough, can keep up with the boys, and doesn’t complain about her curse, she just meets it head on. The differences in the Avalon I know and this one is that she comes to Spearwood knowing who she is and all about the curse. She isn’t innocent and naive which is a good thing. Avalon also knows her heritage. She is part dragon-shifter and part angel. Though the angel part is something she is still learning when Avalon starts Spearwood, the dragon part she has under control.

The boys....Can I just say I was dying to get back to them?! I’ve missed them! Because this book focuses more on her life before Spearwood, her training, and her family, the boys don’t play as big a role. Maverick, Paden, and a new boy Jericho are raised with Avalon at Edgar’s. They are a part of the Vox, a secret society of dragon-shifters who are to protect the female dragon-shifter that will break the curse. Maverick and Paden are brothers and come to live with Edgar at the same time as Avalon. Maverick is laid back, will do anything to make Avalon smile, and is your typical boy. Paden is the serious one, his smiles are hard to come by but they are so worth it. And then there’s Jericho, a new character to the series who arrives under suspicious circumstances. I haven’t decided how I feel about him.

The plot of this one is really the lead up to Avalon and the boys heading to the Academy. It focuses on their training and what chases Avalon and her family out of their home. There is a ton of world-building and as a fan of the original series I was super-excited. It was nostalgic and I loved returning to the Spearwood world. There’s dragon-shifters, angels, witches, an academy that is reminiscent of Hogwarts, and full of pop culture references.

Overall I really enjoyed the book and cannot wait for more. Avalon is a fun character and the boys…I can’t decide which one I like better. Right now, Paden is my favorite but I’m sure it will change. A warning for those that are new to the series (or even old fans), the new version is new adult and will feature a reverse harem. While this first book is fairly PG, as Avalon and the boys get above 18, it will not be. So if you like clean reads, then I might skip this one. If you enjoy urban fantasy, this is one book you shouldn’t miss!

I read these three first books in a single go, so I will analyze them together:

They are terrible.

Badly written, bad love interests, bad setting and constant referrals to much better books (Harry Potter). It started actually pretty well, and the relationship of the girl to her stepfather was amazingly endearing.

But the moment she arrives to the school... no. It stopped working for me. It wasn't even Avalon was a mary sue, she's not THAT bad, it's just the people around her and the revelations are sudden, unexpected and unreasonable. They seemed a bad copy of a mix of far better books and I actually regret having bought the three books at the same time, instead of having read them one at a time.

Spearwood is back and better than ever!
This new retelling will not disappoint long time fans of the original series. AS Oren’s writing style shines through with vivid imagery and character’s that have depth and history. Book one provides a solid foundations for the world and beautifully sets up the series for ongoing adventures. Avalon and the boys are alive and ready to take on Spearwood. The longer format is fantastic and allows readers to fully submerge in the story. Can’t wait to see what comes next!

Not recommended for young adults

The concept is interesting and it started off well. It did start going downhill with the eleven yr olds kissing and the interest in multiple partners. Then age fifteen becomes the appropriate age for long term multiple partners concept with partners being added every other guy. I don't think a young teen needs to be thinking in terms of multiple sex partners let alone multiple life partners. The story is to immature for an adult novel in my opinion.

This book was not very bad per se, just not good enough. I managed to push through and read 26% but had to stop there as it was becoming painful. Avalon seemed too weird. Being five years old she spoke and acted as if she was at least in her twenties (very similar situation with the boys too). The way the story was written did not work for me as there was no relationship development. The boys came, they became friends. That was it. I suppose thi was a setup for the events at Spearwood later on, but it was way too boring.

Our 10 year old,who noted down Spearwood academy have grown up a couple of years, watched porn a couple of times and decided to rewrite the whole story, changing it completely, down to character personalities, backstories (the couple sentences the author bothers to muster up) and general plot. She was too lazy to think up new names so enemies turned childhood friends and potential lovers and so on.I can't really be even angry about the complete turnaround cause initial story was soooooo bad.Not that the second attempt is better, lol.

Fun fantasy

I'm so thankful for kindle unlimited. I seriously have read so many great indie authors because of the service.
This started off a little rocky; I wasn't sure I wanted to keep reading. I have to say that I'm glad I kept going. Im glad that there seems to be an interesting plot line, because even though I am excited to get to the steamy parts, I hate when that's all there is. I'm definitely looking forward to books 1.5 and 2.

Unique

Slightly different story. Only true female dragons are cursed. However I think the author might be taking the whole gender identity thing to far with this book and 1.5. Males can be forced to have a gender change and to have kids. Yet with females so rare there is still a set of males (a couple) who had a gender change to female (both of them), who then each had a kid. It's confusing and muddles up the rest of the story. That aside I think it's interesting.

First of, as a Reverse Harem book... no. Where?! There were these guys that were there who apparently didn't know how to say please or thank you. Very unimpressed.
And the plot? unimpressed again. First the plot was about the school and dragons... and then there was this Hunger Games like challenge that poped out of nowhere. What for? Why? What is the point? We never got any explanation and the world building was very poor. I'm not reading the second book anytime soon.

Instantly hooked!

I love it! It's a romance, mystery, adventure, and action. I am awed at what this author can pull off. The book was detailed but didn't have unnecessary details. It was packed with action and romance. I am a big fan of romance! I love a harem but I especially love when its the guys falling all over the one female

So, this is reverse harem but they're all kids...

If I rated this as RH then it would be 1,5/2 Stars but since it's more of a ya fantasy I'll rate it as I would a book like that.

You follow them from 6 years old till 15 and it honestly felt more like a prequel then a first book.
I'm not sure if I will continue the series.
