The One I Want

Rate this book
Lucky for Chloe Flynt, everyone knows it's easier to get out of a bad relationship than it is to get in one. But when it comes to hot, steamy, long-lasting passion, even Chloe is at a loss--until this British playgirl comes face to face with a true-blue Texas cowboy who tempts her to toss away her commitment-phobic habits once and for all to join him for a walk down the aisle. . .

Falling in love is much harder than breaking up. . .

With three broken engagements under her oh so fashionable belt, it's high time London party girl Chloe Flynt gets a job. Unfortunately, Chloe isn't exactly qualified for anything, except dumping a Mr. Wrong or two (or three!) with a little dignity. Realizing she needs a new beginning, she lands in Austin, Texas, and opens a company helping other people do the dirty work of breaking up. . .

Too bad Chloe's tall, tough-talking, and take-charge landlord, Matthew Tanner, isn't interested in her expertise. Because anyone can see that his girlfriend is clearly all wrong for him. Not that Chloe cares. She and Matthew have nothing in common--other than that mind-blowing attraction, that is. But when his girlfriend requests Chloe's services, all hell breaks loose. If there's one thing Chloe knows for sure, it's that just because she's good at breaking up bad relationships doesn't mean she has a talent for putting together good ones. Maybe it's finally time she gives it a try. . .

Do you like Texas? I’ll admit sometimes I find it hilarious when an author who has never set foot in the great Republic of Texas tries to use it as the setting for a book. Now, those of us who can lay claim to the great Republic of Texas know that it’s a fantastic place and Texans are a special breed, and that everybody really wishes they could be just like us! So when I realized that Nancy Warren’s latest offering “The One I Want” was actually set in Austin, I had to give it a looksee. Okay, back to regular English.

What happens when a spoiled British ‘princess’ meets a good ole’ Texas boy? Mayhem, that’s what. Chloe is the well-heeled daughter of a genuine British peer. She is very good at: shopping, trying new careers, shopping, getting engaged, shopping, partying, and breaking engagements. So when Mummy and Daddy refuse to foot the bills for any more of her exploits, she’s not too sure how she can support herself. When one of friends jokingly suggests she start a business helping people break up with their significant others (as apparently she’s helped several friends do so), she decides to move to America and open “The Breakup Artist”. Since her cash flow is a bit, er…strained, she picks Austin, Texas. Austin will never be the same!

When Matthew was injured in the line of duty, he fell back on his manual skills by buying, selling, and sometimes renting the houses he repairs. He’s definitely not quite sure what to make of his new next-door-neighbor and tenant. She talks and dresses like a princess, works very odd hours, and receives envelopes with large amounts of cash. He thinks she’s a gorgeous, high-class hooker. She thinks he’s a sexy Texan. When he uses a visit to her house to hide from his ‘intended’, the game is on.

This is actually a book about 3 or 4 different relationships. There’s Matthew and his ‘intended’ (who, of course, is all wrong for him…just ask Chloe), Chloe and Matthew, Chloe’s secretary and her stalker boyfriend, Chloe’s secretary and Matthew’s friend, Chloe’s secretary’s psychologist and her significant other, Matthew’s friend and Chloe’s secretary’s psychologist, and Chloe’s secretary’s psychologist’s significant other and his ‘new’ friend. Are you confused yet? It’s not as complicated as it looks though. Each of these relationships have positives and negatives and each of the individuals have to work their way through some ups and downs before they end up with the right one for them. And through it all, we can see Chloe’s unorthodox, yet bang on, gentle steering.

I found myself wrapped up in these relationships. I also found myself wanting to give these people a helping word of advice…”No, not him, HIM.” The snappy repartee between Chloe and Matthew kept me grinning, and what Chloe subjects herself to, in order to become a Texas cowgirl will have me laughing every single time I think of it. So, after reading “The One I Want” by Nancy Warren, you’ll have to let me sign off with a tally ho and a yee-ha!

The One I Want was a very humorous and entertaining book. It was fun to read. At the beginning of the story, I had some doubts as to whether I would like the heroine Chloe Flynt, or her story because she seemed so silly and shallow. I am happy to say that I soon realized that there was more to Chloe, and I enjoyed reading about her. I also loved the hero, Matthew Tanner, an ex-cop who came across as strong yet vulnerable due to an injury he suffered in the line of duty. There were several other characters and secondary romances that were important to the story, and all of these were enjoyable.

Chloe Flynt has spent her life flitting from one thing to another, so when her parents decide they can no longer financially support her, she is at a loss for career options. The only thing this British girl is really good at is breaking off relationships - she has ended three of her own engagements, and she has helped numerous friends end bad relationships. Chloe's friends convince her that she can make this talent into a lucrative career in the United States. Chloe moves to Austin, Texas, where she rents a house and starts her business. She is immediately attracted to her handsome landlord, Matthew Tanner, but he is involved in a serious relationship with a very sweet woman. Chloe immerses herself in her new business and is soon helping clients end relationships. As Chloe meets people in Austin, her life becomes busy and complicated. Chloe tries to keep her identity as "The Breakup Artist" quiet, so there is mutual surprise when Matthew's girlfriend comes to her for help in breaking off their relationship. Chloe is thrilled when Matthew becomes available, and they immediately begin a passionate relationship. However, if Chloe is to ever find permanent happiness, she has to overcome her fears and trust her relationship with Matthew enough not to end it as she did her engagements.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It had a satisfying primary romance, as well as several good secondary romances. The book was filled with great characters, and the humor made the book quick and easy to read. I found this story definitely worth reading, and I will look for more by this author.

What a wonderful, enduring romance novel The One I Want turned out to be. Chloe has a great quality about her. I loved the way she talks in her British accent. Matthew just oozes sex appeal, wearing a pair of jeans like they were a second pair of skin. The chemistry between Chloe and Matthew was hot with a capital H. I like the fact that whenever Chloe was around Matthew didn’t know whether to kiss her or strangle her for just being Chloe. You can bet that Nancy Warren had a lot of fun writing The One I Want because it was one of the best romance novels I have read in a while. I could not get enough of The One I Want and now I want more.

There was just something about the whole spoiled, rich girl heroine that bothered me to the point of blocking my ability to enjoy the book.
Chloe was the classical spoiled little rich girl that lives most of her life without a clue in the world and then attempts to make it on her own. While the idea may seem wonderful, reading about a spioled brat just ruined any chance I had of enjoying the book.
Everytime something good happened in her life, I kept thinking what a shame it wasn't happening to someone more deserving. It may seem very noble of her to all of a sudden attempt to live on her own without her parents bailing her out, but I also expected a certain emotional and psychological maturity that was just lacking.
The only reason this book wasn't a total waste of my time was because of the secondary characters. They were the ones that kept me reading and after they hooked up for good I have to force myself through the rest of the book.
The part that really bothered me was the ending. I just wanted the book to be over with that it wouldn't have really bothered me if the hero and heroine didn't end up together, but I guess that would sort of defeat the whole point of a romance. But the whole learning to be a Texan cowgirl thing was just too much for me to follow. And for Chloe's plan to have worked, I don't think all her new friends should have been following her and giggling, waiting to see if she could "catch" her man.
What was really sad about the whole book, and was just the topping on my cake of dissapointment, was the lack of character growth in the book. It's understood that no one person is perfect and, when reading fiction, I expect for there to be some kind of emotional growth so that I can feel like the characters accomplished something. Too bad all that was lacking!
I applaude Nancy Warren on her attempt to write about a new type of heroine, but I strongly suggest that next time she create a character that readers will be able to connect to.

It’s a good book to read if you are looking for a quick. However if you are looking for something mind blowing and earth shattering this probably isn’t it. If you are going on a trip it would be good to take on the plane or car but not one I’d recommend to read for someone searching for something with more depth.
The book starts off with the main character, Chloe, in England trying to find her way through life. Chloe is portrayed at being a spoiled child that the parents can’t afford anymore. Chloe ends up getting her friends together to help find her a path for her life. Deciding to become a “breakup artist” they decide that the States would be the best opportunity for her. This is the beginning of one of the many storylines in the book. We meet the second main character Matthew, who is a friend of a friend in England and the land lord of the house she’ll be living in. As with most romance books the two love-birds don’t exactly get along.

The book is easy to read and flows well throughout the storyline. Even though it had multiple storylines involving Chloe it does a good job in preventing readers from getting overwhelmed and lost while reading. However I felt the different storylines was at the cost of character development throughout the book. While reading I didn’t get a good read on Chloe’s or Matthew’s characters. Some parts of the book were left unsettled as it wasn’t touched on how the break up with her receptionist and her ex-fiancé actually ended.

This is such a sweet book ^_^

kinda unexpected, i thought you know it'll be kinda serious with paras of comic relief or something BUT no, this was a real funny and light outlook on a classic problem, Love, Commitment, the whole enchilada.

Usually i cant stand heroines like Chloe, i prefer my heroines to be more of a sensible, smart-ass, independent type, then the carefree, shopaholic type.

But i adore Chloe and how she knows just what to say and how she just plain understands. The fact that after all the Prada, Gucci etc brands, she's not a snob or a total b*tch ;)

"Probably he should go back to his house and drink some coffee, give himself a chance to cool down and little miss ‘I’ll use your services again,’ time to wake up. But he didn’t feel like doing the sensible thing. He gave it a minute, then banged again, holding the bell with his finger at the same time."
Whore-mix-up;)

OH YEAH! I forgot about Brittany loll 'cute, nice, little' Brittany... BWAHAHHAHA HIDE MATTHEW!

This wasn't a brilliant story but a nice/enjoyable enough read. It was quite funny at times and was pretty light-hearted. I liked how there were a number of relationships throughout the story that developed rather than just the main one. I would probably read books by Warren again. This one is probably a pretty good 'holiday read'.

I enjoyed this light contemporary romance very much. I'd read another Nancy Warren title last year and couldn't finish it but TOTIW was light-hearted without being silly and it sparkled with romance and fun.

3/5 stars, but marked down because I don't really want more novels like this (ie I like more romance) If I had marked higher the website would suggest stories that a similar to this book, in 'recommendations' catagory .

Matthew , a former cop current house land lord & Chloe, a British chick who has long term relationship issues. Chloe came to the US and opened up her business, which was to be an break-up artist, who breaks up relationships for someone. She rented a house from Matthew, who was in a relationship that wasn't working for him and Brittany. It was light and fun, no detailed hot scenes.
