Chloe always had high hopes that even upon his death, the distant relative that had saved her all those years ago, when she had nothing to her name, would provide for her. He promised her that Lacey's Folly would be hers some day. A plan she can call her own, raise the son whom she can never only claim. Now, her hopes are dashed as when the will is read aloud, it's not Chloe who has the estate but rather a man whom nobody in the family has ever heard of.
Gideon is a struggling artist who has seemed to have lost his inspiration. In debt and struggling to keep his head above water, it's a miracle to have been selected by an unknown relative to be the soul heir to his estate. Shocked by his sudden good fortune, Gideon soon realizes that the boon comes with some strings. He cannot sell the property, indeed his hands are tied from fully embracing his new property until the beautiful but unassuming housekeeper is happily wed. Strange that the old man seemed to put such esteem on an employee but soon Gideon too falls under the spell of miss Chloe Hartwell. She is entirely uncouth, often saying whatever is on her mind without thought. But she is obviously born from a good family, strange how she came to be in her current predicament.
Regardless, she must wed and despite entering into an affair, Gideon never thinks that perhaps the answer to both their problems is staring them in the face. Pride and a good deal of stubbornness stands between them and true happiness. Even with a ghost to help guild their way, perhaps some people are just too lost in the mist.
I enjoyed this book. I liked how the main characters often bickered and fought like cats and dogs. Chloe was a lovely character who made the mistake of loving the wrong man. Gideon was also the victim of love. Together they were so very similar in their personalities. Often quick to snap judgment and getting their feelings hurt over perceived slights and such. The plotline could be considered boring, I'd understand if someone reading it came to that conclusion. There wasn't much actually going on as is typically the case in historical romances. The subplot of Lenore and the treasure was there to kind of break up the lull but I was just too enamored with the characters to dislike the book.
