Rescue Squad No. 9

Rate this book
In this companion book to Fire Engine No. 9, Rescue Squad No. 9 must spring into action when a young sailor and her dog are stranded during a storm!

Follow the crew as they scramble aboard their helicopter and speedboat, racing to the rescue through the waves and winds. The high action is communicated through minimal sound words and bold, graphic art reminiscent of that in Donald Crews’s transportation books.

While there may be only a few words in the story, it packed quite a punch. The Rescue Squad is ready to go, whenever troubles arises. At the annual regatta, a boat gets stuck on the rocks and a nasty storm rolls in. Thankfully, Rescue Squad No. 9 is ready to head out. With their tracker boat and helicopter, they locate the stranded boater and his dog before flying them to safety. After the storm clears, it’s smooth sailing for the other boaters and Rescue Squad No. 9 is ready to help again. Even with so few words, I was able to craft a great story for Neo. He loved it and hopes that we can find more books like this one for our future reading.

RESCUE SQAUD NO. 9 is a book that young readers will find exciting to read on their own. As the kids read the simple and repetitive words, they'll follow along in the story of an exciting ocean rescue. This is a follow up to Fire Engine No. 9.

From the creator of Fire Engine No. 9 - now follow the Coast Guard rescue squad! Lots of color & action, plus the large font and repeated words make this a great choice for anyone who likes rescue & action stories, from toddlers on up. Like the first book, flaps contain labeled images of special equipment

Vivid, colorful illustrations and sound effects tell this genuinely suspenseful story of an ocean rescue squad. Beautiful and interesting book with a nod to the previous (also excellent) book, Fire Engine No. 9. Water safety tips at the end.

Much like his fire engine book, Austin's sea rescue story is action-packed, tense, exciting, and short on text. It goes by fast, but you'll have to catch your breath afterwards!

Brightly-colored, action-packed art. Would make a great read-aloud, but all the realistic details invite re-reading and scrutiny especially from vehicle-obsessed children.

This book was very bright and colorful, the illustrations and plotline were dramatic, and it’s a great read for young readers. I wish that it had more text and explanation of what was going on (I found myself trying to explain the story to my child and provide context for her), but I understand that it was written for a younger audience who likes to see/hear less text when reading a story. Since I enjoy reading out loud and my child is used to hearing/seeing more words even though she is young, it was just a bit brief for us.

Sound words and bold, graphic art make this story sing.

Direct and practical are all the details, as we readers follow a rescue squad on an important mission, all the way through to a very happy ending.

Mike Austin writes excellent picture books, supplying both concept, words, and illustrations. All vivid. All important.

FIVE STARS, Mike. I find your books to be just plain superb.

The illustrations are great in this story and show how rescue helicopters and boats help people that run into trouble on the water. My son enjoyed learning about how the helicopter can lift people up in a small cage and rescue them.

Great illustrations of a water rescue boat and helicopter responding to a distress call. Not lots of words, so even very young readers would love it and maybe be able to read it. There are lots of noise words, which my son loved as a toddler. He was able as a 5 year old to read it to me.

An action and onomatopoeia packed air and water rescue mission to save a family from their sinking boat, including their dog!
